Loud rattling noise during vibration anyone? - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

I have had my A2017U since October of 2016. The vibration was okay until B19 came out, then I started to notice this rattling noise accompanying every phone vibration. My phone has never fallen heavily or anything. Initially, I thought it was the build. From my observation, the vibration on B29 (the first Marshmallow build) is a lot softer than the Nougat and onwards builds, which is why I didn't notice it back then. So I'm guessing the motor might be a bit loose and the stronger vibration on the subsequent ROMS are triggering this loud noise?
If anyone has experienced this or knows how to fix it, please let me know, as it is quite annoying and I plan to trade it in and get another device next year. This problem could be a deal breaker and it renders the vibration almost unusable in quiet places; draws unnecessary attention.

That's normal, it happens once you crank the vibration force up. Shouldn't happen on stock ROMs but it does. I have that on Oreo even though i never had that problem on other builds. I suspect it's the bonding between the vibrator and the daughter board that's bad for some reason, though maybe it's just the vibrator itself

Yeah, that's the weird part; I never bothered with cranking it up in any way and I'm currently running V2.10B12. If anything, I recently downloaded the Vibration Tuner Xposed module to try to tone it down. The results are a bit so-so, and the rattling sneaks in every now and then. On Oreo, it doesn't even work. I'm guessing it has to do with the rw issue we're currently experiencing.

No connection whatsoever, rw is because it's a closed beta.
You'll have to find a custom kernel thay works with your ROM and tune it down from kernel adiutor

Thanks for the info. Do you know of any custom kernels for stock? I am yet to see one that works on stock ROMs. CAD, Llama, HellsGate all seem to work only on custom ROMs

BeastMode worked with U stock but it's not updated anymore. Worth a try anyways.
Otherwise just go custom or install one of the Oreo betas (i recommend B01 w/ hdr+ patch), because someone is gonna publish a kernel for it sometime soon

Yeah, the only thing keeping me away from custom Oreo is the dual-SIM bug, but a comment I just found on AEX suggests that it works on the latest build. I'm going to give it a whirl when I get home on Tuesday.

I meant Oreo betas as in B01, non custom, but yeah, AEX has dual sim since long ago anyways

I´ve got the same issue here with my A2017G running Nougat B12. It suddenly appeared. Phone has never been dropped or handled roughly. As far as I understand its an issue with a badly constructed or weak holder of the vibration motor. It rattled itself loose. On the upside it seems to disappear by itself as I am not encountering that issue any more.

Good for you, mine has been bugging me for months. I'm dreading having to open the phone to fix it; I might do that when I'm ready to sell.

fixed it
I found an easy fix for this

Humming/screeching/buzzing sounds from within the tablet

First of all, I know that I have read about this problem in other threads but I cannot find it; I think it was associated with custom ROMs but I'm not entirely sure.
I have two problems with my sound right now:
popping
Every time the tables boots up the speakers pop. No a big deal and it might be just because they get activated and the current causes the pop. But every time a sound is made? That is annoying!
humming/screeching/buzzing
Now this is the scariest problem. The sound that comes from "within" the tablet, i.e. behind the screen and not the actual speakers. It does not always appear but seems to be linked to apps trying to use sound. It almost sounds like a hard drive spinning irregularly or a distant old dial-up modem (weird analogy, I know). I don't know what's causing it but in my opinion it's not a good sign.
Again, if anyone here remembers where it has been discussed already I will take the blow as long as I can find out if the problem(s) have been solved somewhere.
Thanks y'all!
1. Everyone's device does that. It's just the way the device wakes the speakers before playing a sound as you say. Would hope Asus could do something about that in the future.
2. It sounds like you are hearing the screen's backlight frequency. Not everyone will hear this (as we lose the ability to hear certain frequencies as we get older), but again it happens with everyones device, and is normal with any screen using a backlight.
Do you have a custom rom on it?

Yes, I do. I use the PRIME! 1.4 ROM and the blades-clemsyn overclock kernel. It has been an issue since the 3.1 upgrade I think. Never had it stock though so I cannot comment on issues with the stock ROM, unfortunately.

What makes this theory a bit wobbly is that the sound isn't always there. It seems to be application-specific. I would expect a backlight frequency (like a fluorescence bulb?) to be audible whenever the backlight is on and not during one application running but not the other.
Process of elimination.
Roll back to stock and see if the problem occurs. If so, sounds like you’re going to have to return it for an exchange.

Do you also know if there has been a use for the SBK to enable root for the stock ROM?

Each app will tell your device to process the images onscreen in different ways, whether thats the refresh rate, resolution or just pixel density, so you would still get different frequencies from different apps all the time. Anyway I'm not saying that's 100% the reason, it's just a possibilty based on what you were describing.

Very good points! Never thought of it this way... Do you also think it's worth going back to stock and try to figure it all out or just take it "as is"?
If it is what I thought it was, it won't make a difference which rom you use, and it's a normal feature of the tablet. You must live in a very quiet place to hear it all the time or have very sensitive ears. If it's not that, then trying another rom as mentioned above may help you narrow down the list of causes. If it's annoying you too much then possibly it IS a fault with the tablet and in which case you'd need to get a replacement. If it was me I'd probably roll back to the stock rom just to see.

After 20 years of listening to metal I highly doubt that my ears are that sensitive but you never know I might try the stock ROM as soon as it has been rooted but for now I don't think it's worth it. I was more worried about something inside the device being tortured

I hear the buzzing sound too and I am also unning Prime 1.4 ROM and Clemsyn-Blades KERNEL. I hear it on the Left side of the tablet and sounds like its coming from the speaker but more towards the screen edge. Never heard it on Stock though.
dja2k
I'll have to wait for another reboot to test this, but I hear what I call high pitched 'tweeting' from the speaker I just have to touch the volume up/down button on the tablet and it seems to instantly stop.
I'll test here in a bit. Using Primordial 3.1 and the OC Kernel at 1.4 right now.
Update: 'twas my imagination on the touching of the volume button. It squeals a bit thru all the ASCII art and status boot screens, but settles down when the lock screen appears. Not a nuisance, but audible.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
I updated the Clemsyn-Blades v6 KERNEL to v7ELITE and I don't hear the buzzing sound anymore. Maybe it was that version of the custom KERNEL. I will check it out, maybe it is just random.

It's the custom kernel you're using, mine was doing the same thing with some weird high pictched sounds too. I reflashed the stock ASUS kernel and it hasent done it since. Just to make sure, I reflashed the custom kernel you're using and the speakers make the humming noise again.

Review and issues with Wolfbreak's v 6.0.0 rom

I've been using this rom for a month now, and I've noticed that it tends to get a bit laggier every day. At first it was blazing fast but now it's as slow as the original rom. I also suddenly started having a problem with my earpiece speaker crackling.
To fix this I've done the Pull-out-Battery reset. It's helped with speed but the earpiece is still crackling terribly.
To solve the earpiece issue I've turned my in-call volume down to very low and the crackling is a lot less worse.
I just wanted to post a review and a few small things that have been a bit buggy for me with this rom.
Overall I really like it and I can live with battery-resetting my phone every once in a while, but I'm disappointed in the speaker damage.
If they can fix whatever is damaging the speaker I'd say this is a great ROM.

xloud has bad news written all over it
Though the Wolfbreak Rom does come with xloud, I have it disabled.
I have to wonder why it is still included in the rom though, I seem to understand it's fairly well documented to cause speaker issues so I would have thought it would be removed from all roms by now.
i hv v6 WB but it doesnt have xloud preinstalled.
u have to flash it if u want ...
Mind you, even though WB can work wonders with any roms he produces its still based off a SE firmware which can never be truly faster than anything AOSP.
At least in my experience.

Just want to say i've been using Wolfs Rom (V7b6) for unlocked bootloader (Doomlord Kernel v06) for little over a month now and i've never had any issues. I flashed several things like xLoud + Bravia; battery mod from kitchen; different fonts; different lockscreens ...etc. I hear some people do have issues though, mainly the loss of contacts when the phone shuts itself down (which i think is due to a locked bootloader-not sure). Maybe i'm blessed with a good device/battery . I absolutely love this rom So big big THANK YOU 2 WOLF. Peace.

Anyone else notice this glitch?

Phone Speaker crackling, noise, static, while screen off. (Also on call)

Easy to test, go to a very quiet room. Really quiet. Put your phone to your ear while screen off and listen. (Not phone off)
You will hear a faint sound, static, cracking well some kind of noise.
This is nothing new, and not just bound to this phone. However I had this issues only on the Nexus 4 and never noticed it on other phones I had.
It becomes a bit annoying while in call, really quiet room, and every pause, when both parties are not talking.
I think only option is learn to live with it? As if the numerous threads from N4 and other devices are true, this is a HW fault on all devices. Some ppl just do not hear it. What varies is the intensity, which ppl reported that exchanged their devices.
Is there someone on some variant not hearing it? (State your age as well)
Is there someone who exchanged their device based on this problem and got a new one with a different level of the noise?
Mine is international LG D802
I do hear the pops and squeals when I'm on a call, but not otherwise. VZW version, rooted, stock rom, "A" version of modem/radio.

The sound that you experience, since its through your BT as well, might be normal connection/call sounds. I have this really on all phones even sometimes on iPhone. But if its something tha tyou do not expect to hear, and have it constantly , bring it for repairs, I do not have somehting out of the ordinary in the calls, except what I described in the OP.
What I mean its really like static electricity, cracking sounds. But its faint, you won't notice it in normal environment, at least not when you do not know what to look for. There are youtube videos for the N4 with the sound I mean. cant listen to it now, as I am at work but I think something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
you really need a quiet environment, put your ear to the earpiece.
Also thanks for your post!
I am on ATT and noticed this and I was thinking about returning it but I tested the display model at the ATT store and the same thing. I tested an Iphone 4s and the same thing with the earpiece. I think this is more common than people think because you really have to be in a quiet setting to actually hear it. Thanks

My ears or better brain adjusted... same way you adjust to every annoying sound after a while. It is there... but you stop caring - hearing it.
I do not believe there is a software fix. If your problem is the one that I described, new hw might help.
But as I said. I adjusted ...
Definitely seems to be hardware problem. If I knew about it earlier I would never connect headphones and charger at the same time. Symptoms: static noise @ approx. 120bpm from both speakers, while phone in deep sleep.
Tried uninstalling v4a drivers, app, poweramp, flashing different kernels, clearing caches, and what so not.
I don't want to raise hope, but I found temporary workaround. I'm on stock kk, and I use g2 tweaksbox and gravitybox to get statusbar aosp quicksetting tiles. There is a compass tile. If I leave it ON there is no more noise. At first I thought that maybe this prevents phone from deep sleeping, but bbs is showing that phone sleeps well. Have not tested standby battery impact yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the remainder, as I noticed latest @dorimanx kernel eliminates this (from v 8) and my itchy fingers installed Viper4Android again and yes I struck my luck the distortion starts again...
My conclusion is an option between have better audio performance in mid to high volume level. But, lived my days with G2 enjoying the distort...
Or uninstall everything about viper4android and listen to flat music beat...
And I choose ingore the distort and drive away with awesome audio performance in my bluetooth car audio....
Cheers,
Hey, do you have xposed? I noticed that if I enable compass in quicktiles, there will be no more crackling. But I'm not sure about battery. So I use this when it's quite, in the evening, and I start hearing cracks, I just turn on compass.

Anyone else simply happy not rooting this phone?

When I bought this phone two weeks ago I was excited at the prospect of rooting it so that I could install my "goto" root apps.
I pondered it for several days and was about to root yet another device and I changed my mind. I find I am enjoying Oreo just the way it is and for me this is a nice change. I tend to root/jailbreak everything immediately. In the end flashing rom updates and fixes actually started to give me anxiety. I found myself dreading updates and it was becoming a real chore and wasn't fun anymore.
Anyone else enjoy this phone without tinkering with or modifying it?
Yep same here, been having this from last year and half, the verizon variant.. Though rooting this is pain and all but just like you I was too. Much into rooting and flashing.
This phone as it is, is awesome enough.
But i liked nougot more
Sent from my ASUS_X00TD using Tapatalk
It is an amazing device. The only reason I rooted it was to remove the screen retention with a custom kernel and ckal support. :good:
One thing, is there any way to increase refresh rate without rooting? Just thought about this for some reason.
With Oreo I do not feel the need for root anymore.
On Nougat I used root for KCAL, build.prop mods for 16bit.pcm.offloading & zero shutter lag and also mods for stereo speakers & no throttle.
But I've yet to come across any burn in on Oreo, maybe they fixed it by recalculating the default KCAL values?
They've also fixed the issue of 44.1Khz audio being output as 48Khz through the DAC.
Could also be placebo but I find the DAC to perform better now on Oreo.
I'd love to have zero shutter lag & stereo speakers but that's just a mild annoyance hardly anything to worry about.
The weird thing is that my performance have seeming increased going to Oreo from having the performance mods on Nougat.
The left picture is on Nougat and the other one on Oreo.
Now that I think about it, silent camera would be nice for the default camera. If the setting is there I can't find it. Thanks for the side by side. Interesting.
Yeah, I don't need to root this thing either. I have had this almost a year now. Upgrade to Oreo, and now happier then ever.
May be in future once we Pie ROM with second screen feature, I will think about it.
I used to have a Samsung Note 5, and rooted and flash plenty of times. But, it was a pain to keep up with updates. I learned my lesson to not root Android.

I imagine this is how most get out of the rooting game.
There has to be a serious need to do so and not just for the sake of it.
Though i still believe unless you gain admin rights over your device you do not own it.

First time not rooting in about 10 years, running Oreo and so far everything is good (battery life, performance, features). I haven't even re-installed Nova Launcher, the home with app drawer has been good enough.
The one thing I'm missing is forcing it to 3g/CDMA since I'm on Verizon and where we live in Colorado, there is more and stronger 3g towers than LTE so I've always saved a lot of battery by locking to CDMA and not hunting/swapping for LTE towers. I'm mostly at home so I've got wifi for any real data needs. So other than that one thing, I haven't had a real need to root. So far...

If you have your msl you can force 3g or you can install Xposed and I think there's a module for that. Inteli3g
This is the first time I've rooted a phone for a while, due to the screen retention issue. Else, stock or AOSP unrooted is enough considering most features are available these days

Thanks for replying, I've been trying to get into the field service menu for the last couple of days but will probably have to call VZW and try to convince them to give it to me.
Re: Xposed, since that requires root, that was the one reason I miss having root (Xposed to be able to force 3g, that's how I did it on my old rooted phones).

That wasn't my experience with Oreo on my H918. Perhaps I need to try it again. As I recall, I still had screen retention issues, which is what ultimately led me to rooting my phone to use KCAL. I would really like for this phone to NOT be rooted.

Close to two months after my quoted message I can tell you that my phone do indeed suffer from screen retention. The first month i.e up to sometime in February I did not notice any screen retention - but since having sold my computer and using my phone for much more it has started to reveal itself.
It's only visible in one app, and that's Discord with its dark gray background and the 'retention' is that of the keyboard close to the edge of the screen.
Considering the circumstance around my screen retention, that for now, my V20 is my main 'machine'. I'm not that bothered by it, I have a PC coming in next week - and if I remember I'll tune in some weeks after it has arrived and update whether or not it's gone(with decreased usage).
For me I had had enough with screen burn and rooted this phone in last December.

Yeah, I realized I dug up an old post. Sorry about that.
I may have to try running my phone in a stock form to see how bad it really is. I'm running into some weird issues with, presumably with Magisk, and I want to unroot my phone. The only real reason I can't is because of the screen retention issue.

Oh it's no problem, sorry if my post came off as offensive.
It is really not bad at all, and I might elaborate om the issue that it's only really beginning to show later in the day.

See, mine will show retention minutes after being booted. For example, after a fresh install of a ROM, be it LOS or Stock, I'll start noticing ghosting before I can get into the color settings or Kernel Adiutor to make the adjustments... that's just from the time in TWRP and the booting. I guess everyone's phone it a little different.

Assistance/question on crackling noise

Greetings everyone.
I'm currently on my 3rd essential phone :silly: but I keep on getting this stupid crackling noise from the phone (speaker, headset, BT audio), and I'm aware many have this issue which apparently is a software thing, wouldn't imagine having 3 essential phones having the same defect, hence my question... Is there any custom ROM where I can ease my mind playing whatever noise on whatever app without listening to this annoying ass crackling noise? Currently my problem persists on WhatsApp voice notes, and any freaking game I play (and I play like 6 games). Any advice would be extremely helpful. Currently running stock Android 10, never modified this particular device whatsoever, no root no flashing, no fastboot flash... Nothing all stock clean.
Waiting on the same boat for some advice..
Hello, the latest patch has this fixed I'm happy to say, and the speaker sounds quite better too. However I hope fast charging comes back next month, it's painfully slow now
