And it is running pretty smooth so far, even the 'swipe up' in the homescreen feels more refined and less prone to open the whole app menu instead of the last used apps. One cool thing is the weather in the lock screen seems to be working, the testing continues but so far so good !

What version of twrp are you using? Does it decrypt data?
I have had to use version 3.2.0 with usb-otg method for flashing zips. The later versions do not recognize the usb-otg partition.

I always fastboot boot twrp 3.2.1.0 and then flash stuff from internal storage. I don't have problems with decrypting I guess.

Magisk 16.4 beta for myself.
bad battery life
Hi Guys! Is it just me, or the battery life on this version sucks ?
I have almost only the half of the battery at end of the day compared to the previous preview version (and 8.1).
I don't think I use anything different, no new applications. Even using the same apps (like google news, chrome, plum) make the phone go hot.
Does anyone have the same problems?

I used it as a daily driver from release until yesterday. I only dumped it because my kids wanted me to play pokemongo with them and it wouldn't login on the beta. Aside from that one issue (and google pay not working) it was perfect.
My sentiments exactly........pretty perfect indeed

confirmed, looks like it was a PTC login issue.
How is the battery life for you guys so far?
Edit: Couldn't wait for an answer and flashed it anyway.
Working great so far. Battery life seems to be the same compared to Oreo. Few things I noticed:
1. As someone already mentioned here, the brightness levels must have changed somehow. I usually use my phone at 15 to 25 % indoors. Have to set it to 35 to 40 % now.
2. Weather doesn't appear on lock screen, but other people seem to be affected by this as well.
3. The back button (new layout) sometimes closes an app instead of going back within the app.
4. Fixed my problems with Smart Lock. It didn't work from time to time on Oreo. Now it's working fine.

also since store is sometimes a bit meh, you can use

best way to copy files onto device is through ssh, setup password in developer options
store is sometimes broken, you need to do devel-su pkcon refresh in terminal, need to set password up in developer options.
OTA - Over the Air update
Best way to update SailfishOS is by using an ssh connection to the phone.
Disable all patches and Openrepos repositories before updating.

Hi
I downloaded the b225 firmware 3-4 days ago and since then the battery from its over 5 hours average SOT has lost +20% of its power...
Has anyone else faced a similar issue after updating??!!
The old issues for me still not resolved :
Google now does not get activated by voice command
Whatsapp/telegram/etc social apps dont download latest messages unless the apps are open and running in background
Oh well....
I'm not facing the battery issue.
But the WhatsApp messages' auto receive failure persists.

Yes, Chinese version is updated frequently.
Additionally, it has call recording out-of-box and option to hide navigation keys
But there are some disadvantages too, like some specific problems with Google apps. I can't say that it is big problem, but in some cases it can broke your common way of using phone (navigation, Google assistant...). Yeah, it can be fixed, but you have to do something instead of gaining same in world roms.
There are also some bloatware with Chinese symbols which you have to disable or uninstall.
And Chinese version has tough algorithm to unload apps from memory, so user will get some problems with notifications. There is workaround to lock apps in memory. But it is another fix that you have to do manually in Chinese roms.
Anyway, you can try rebrand to Chinese rom, use it a few time, then back to US version or stay.

Dear members,
My Nexus 6 is in desperate need of some new life. It's been terribly laggy for the last year, and I can't buy a new phone right now.
I have very little experience with rooting, recoveries, kernels and other jargon words, and I really need your help!
What's the best combination of Kernel and OS at the moment? I was thinking about LineageOS 16 stock Kernel, but would like to be sure. Do I need root access?
Also, can someone point me in the direction of a tutorial to install what I need that can be done on Mac? I know you guys can probably get things done based on your experience and with little information, but I need a step-by-step or I will brick my phone.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!

Actually ROMs and kernels aren't a mix and match. Use the kernel coming with the ROM or be prepared for funny things to happen.
Lineage has a pretty straightforward step by step guide for installation: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/shamu/install
You don't need root - if you want it you can flash https://mirrorbits.lineageos.org/su/20190709/addonsu-16.0-arm-signed.zip and enable it in the settings.

Depends of your definition of usability. Of cause it's slower then newer devices as shamu was developed in 2014.
But I still use it as secondary device for browsing and watching youtube. Also I am a bit biased as I am the maintainer for shamu on LineageOS. Maybe you should ask other users in the Lineage-16.0 thread.

If you search on Google about Magisk, you can directly go where you can download the zip and you can install it immediately after LineageOS and Google Apps. Then, once you booted the device, from inside the Magisk app, you can install from its internal repository the modules you want to use, every one of them does something you can find useful I think. In the end, I recommend you NFS Injector module to have your device good as a new one in terms of performance. I hope to have everything cleared for you

Hi guys,
I came back here to give some feedback on what I have done.
I followed the instructions on the Lineage wiki link and installed Lineage OS 16. I kept it as simple as possible and didn't do anything besides that. No module, no magisk, no root, no TWRP. Just Lineage. It's not that I didn't want to go further, but I don't know enough about android to do it. Even just installing Lineage was kind of a challenge. It was not a smooth process, but I managed to do it.
In any case, it fews like an entirely new phone now. Lag has been reduced to almost none. It was almost unusable before and know it's actually enjoyable to use. Thank you very much for your help and to everyone that kept support for Shamu alive.
I did run into a few problems so far, but nothing really significant. The flashlight and camera sometimes won't work and need a reboot to come back (thankfully boot time is really quick now). The Netflix app also won't work anymore, but that's expected with no magisk, right?
If I wanted to go back and install magisk and a few modules, can I do that now without having to wipe the phone again? Or would I have to redo the whole process?
Thank you!!

No need to Wipe.
Just reboot to recovery and flash magisk installer ZIP.
Now reboot to system, and you see new Magisk App installed.
Just open it and install any of the Modules you want, just make sure to reboot after every Install/Update/Uninstall of any Module.

If you are using your Nexus 6 as a Daily Driver like Me, I would recommend you to install LineageOS 15.1 (Android 8.1) which is much more stable and responsive than LineageOS 16 (Android 9.0).
About updates it is fine, because LineageOS 16 is in active development and updates are released regularly, as compared to LineageOS 15.1 which is almost finalized and its updates are released every weeks/months.
About Module:
A module is a mod or a customization for your device which can be installed systemlessly(without modifying your android system files) using Magisk.
For Example: If you want to enhance your audio of the headphone you can install Viper4Android.

I am using it as a daily. For the last few days it's been really good. It was stock before and pretty much unusable. Do you think it's worth redoing the process to put lineage 15.1 on? I am not that confident with these things. I am at that point where I think "I can't believe I've done it and it's working". And if I redo it and screw things up I am gonna be furious I tried to fix what was not broken.

Hi,
Coming back to share my experience. Lineage 16 was performing really well, but it got unstable after a few days. I was having 3-4 random reboots per day, mainly when scrolling through pages in multiple apps. The flashlight and camera also wouldn't work quite often and needed restart.
So I decided to take the advice given here and flashed lineage 15.1 (with mindthegaps, no root, no magisk). Performance isn't as good, but stability has been much better. No reboots so far. A few app crashes, but nothing major.
Once again I few like my phone has gotten new life and I will be able to squeeze a few more months out of it.
Thank you for all the replies to this thread. You guys helped a lot!

Just wait a week. Don't use the developer preview. It's a really bad build and not stable at all.
The open beta is said to be coming out by the end of this month. Meaning it will be dropping this week unless there's been some sort of last minute critical bug found (doubtful).

Lineage 17.1 is pretty smooth, camera crashes after ~30mins of video but I mean that's a lot, reboot fixes that. Sometimes on boot you have to wait ~2mins before unlock pattern will work if you want to secure it. Other than that, butter

Eh, bricking a Google device is pretty hard. Easiest thing is unlock it (enable oem unlocking) then flash twrp from fastboot (need a Linux liveboot or mac system to do that) then flash the rom+gapps. twrp should let you mount usb storage but if not you can adb 'em over, there's install instructions for all of those things in the requisite threads

Looks like it's not fully stable yet, if that's the right term. Says encryption not tested. I tried looking into installing Lineage 17.1 as tabormeister mentioned earlier in the thread, but couldn't find an easy how to guide. It's been a while since I've installed a custom rom. Do you know where I can get easier info about how to install it?

Hey, what's rom currently installed on your device?
