A friend gave me a samsung tablet A SM-P580 (used) and I’m wondering, do I have to worry if this is stolen? Is there any way to find out like an ESN/IMEI number or something?

It's not a phone, so it doesn't have an IMEI number. But it does have a serial number you can find in /Settings/About tablet. Try registering the device with Samsung. If it has been reported stolen, they'll know from the serial number.
Thank you lewmur

I really doubt that anyone will give you their IMEI number. I for one wouldn't give mine out.

You can obtain your IMEI number by dialing *#06# on your phone.

I figured it was illegal after reading some posts and looking at the item on ebay more. Thanks alot for the reply. Cheers
You can get prison for that. It's illegal for a reason, otherwise every thief who nicks a phone would just go to a phone shop somewhere and get a new IMEI.
Hi Guys,
my Problem is that i buyed my father a new phone. he lives in turkey and if you want to use a phone longer than 1 month in turkey you must register it. otherwise they block your imei and you cant use the phone. so i want to change the imei from the new phone to the old one what is registered, otherwise my father must pay about 150€, and thats not okay. i bought the phone in media markt germany and i got the receipt. i think its not okay that you have to pay that money to the state, if you buy a new phone.. thats crazy and much money for nothing. the older phone is a galaxy s2 what has a registered IMEI and i want to change the IMEI of the new phone to the older ones, that he doesnt have to pay for the new phone. so my question, can i do a EFS backup of the galaxy s2 and restore it on a galaxy s5, is it possible? or is there another way to change the IMEI of the phone? in my opinion its not illegal in that way, cause i got the receipt and the original boxes of those phones. i am from germany so excuse me for my school english, i hope you know what i mean.
thanks in advance
In a word.......no
The IMEI is a number that is unique to every cellphone. In many countries, altering this number is against the law. If anybody here on XDA gives you information on how to do it, they'll be breaking XDA rules too.......
Sorry fella....no help on this site.....

Hi all! Want to find out if any one bought a Galaxy smartphone(Galaxy S8 as an example) from samsung.com? If yes, then I would like to know if phone's IMEI or Serial # is printed on the invoice that is included in the shipping box OR does it just say the model # of the phone and that is it?

What about the packing slip, is there an IMEI there? I recently purchased HTC U11 and the packing slip had IMEI # printed on it.

The reason for this is if I buy a used device that is under warranty and seller provides a receipt for it, I just want to make sure that Samsung won't say that the device doesn't match the receipt.
I was thinking this:
If a person bought a device from Samsung(or another OEM), how does this company track if this is the device it sold to that specific person? Lest say if you bough the same model devices from 2 different places almost at the same time and deciding to return one of them, but if they are identical and you accidentally could return the wrong one to the wrong place of purchase. Upon return, the place of purchase might notice that IMEIs don't match or they don't keep track of it and as long as it the same model, color, then all is good?
In other words, do these companies track IMEI/Serial # for the devices they sell to each person?

As far as I know, the IMEI is not associated with an individual users, but primarily used to track the reselling of partially paid devices in order to blacklist them.
Hello, i found a S8 recently in good price but is IMEI locked on UK is there any way to unlock it? And is it safe to buy it? I read somewhere that it may be stolen.

As already stated, no it can't be unlocked and it's most likely a stolen phone
Check the IMEI here http://imeipro.info/
Does the phone asks for a code or does it prompt any message on the display?

Got same issue. Not been able to buy a new one went for second hand and after the check look like the phone is blacklisted. I cannot afford to lose £350.
There should be a way to make it working. If cannot be said . can someone with good hearth send a link or point to some other forum where this is explained.
On youtube people charge a fortune to make it working. So someone knows how to do it
Thanks for your understanding

We do not discuss imei changing or blacklist repair. It is either a stolen phone. Or it was blacklisted due to non payment. I would take the sales receipt you got to a police station and file charges on the seller for selling property he wasn't allowed to sell
