Did my cat kill my phone? - Moto Z Force Questions & Answers

Yesterday, my son had his moto z force on the stock charger in his room. With his cat. While he was sleeping, the cat chewed through his charger's cord. The alarm worked to wake him up, but after he snoozed it once, the phone died and now won't boot, charge or be seen by adb or fastboot.
Is it really dead, or is there anything I can do?

Probably just severely drained. Connect to laptop to charge. Occasionally that works for some reason. May take all day for the power to flow in.

Are you using a different charging cable or the one the cat chewed?

Tried two different ones. I repaired the hardwired cable on the original charger, the one that got chewed, and also tried a new Anker cable and my Nexus 6 charging block. Also, the Anker cable and my laptop. So far, nothing. I'm thinking of trying a battery next.

Don't waste your time messing around. Go to the local Verizon store and test a new Turbo Charger. If it doesn't start charging within a couple of minutes, you have bigger issues from that short. Do know that Motorola has a proprietary wiring scheme and some generic cables will not work.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. But I don't think the Anker cable is an issue. My other son has the moto z play and he charges it through the PS4 USB port using the same cable.

Update: Cat killed the battery. New battery from eBay and it's all good.

Problems with new wall charger. Discharging?

I'm having a problem charging my phone. Long story short, I left my phone charger at work and can't easily go back to get it until next week. I went to Best Buy today and bought another wall charger. It said it was compatible with the HTC EVO, and since the Shift also has microUSB and the same battery, I assumed it would be compatible.
I plugged the phone in and it seemed to be working fine, but a few minutes later I checked on it again and it wasn't charging, although it was still plugged in. I unplugged it and looked at the Battery Status when I plugged it back in. First it says Charging (AC) for about 12 seconds, then changes to Charging (USB) for about 14 seconds. After that the battery icon stops doing the charge animation and the Battery Status says Discharging (instead of the usual Not Charging when it's not plugged in at all). I have tried rebooting but it does this every time.
Anyone have any ideas what's wrong? And if I have to just take it back, how can I be sure this won't happen again? Has someone else bought a charger at Best Buy that actually works for the Shift?
Not sure if it makes a difference but I'm running Evervolv.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks guys!
Well I've learned my lesson and only use chargers of the same brand as my phone. With a HTC phone ill only use a HTC charger. I've had a phone just completely die from using a off brand charger and had to get a new phone.

Take it back to best buy and try again, might have just been a faulty unit.
About the only problem I have with chargers are the cheap gas station car chargers, I use boost chargers MOTO cliq,Droid,g2(HTC) them all work fine but the gas station chargers just keep my battery where it was when I plugged it in no matter what I do it won't charge but it won't run dead either I dunno its weird

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll try to exchange it for a different brand and see how that works.
yah i would only use htc chargers... i used to have a longer amazon usb cable i connected and charged with my htc adapter. now i can only use it to transfer data, no charging.
I came to the Shift from the Palm Pre. When I was looking to get extra wall and car chargers for the Pre I was told to be sure and get 1000mA output chargers, that anything less than that was not powerful enough to charge the Pre. I have used those chargers with no problems on the Shift.
On a trip in my girlfriends car I plugged her Shift into her car charger. She also had a Pre and now a Shift, so the same chargers. I noticed on the phone it said "Discharging" I then realized I had replaced her car charger a couple of days earlier because it was falling apart with a new one I found in a drawer. When I looked at the charger it was rated at 750mA. I replaced it with the 1000mA charger and have not had the issue since.

[Q] Nexus7 charger with other devices?

I just got a Nexus 7 a couple of days ago and of course I thought any USB charger would work. When it didn't charge on the charger I keep plugged in for all purpose charging, I resorted to Google to see what's up. I would love to have a single charger that works for everything. Having looked through many pages of discussion about this I did not see the answer to my question, whether the Nexus 7 charger will charge my other devices, phone, ASUS Transformer, etc, I know that the data pins on this charger are shorted, but does that prevent it from properly charging my phone, for example? Do the data pins being shorted affect it's ability as a general charger?
Especially for travel, having to carry a single charger would be preferred.
I ran into a similar problem with a friend's Nook Color, only there the problem seems to be a proprietary cable. Even in that case we discovered that a good charger (iPAD version) and a standard cable would work, just pretty slowly.
I may have missed the answer in my searching, and if so, please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I haven't tried to search, but I have used my Nexus 7 charger to charge my Acer phone and my Logitech K800 keyboard and H600 headset.
I can't remember if I used the cable that came with the charger. I have a stack of micro USB connectors around. I try to bin any that are power only. Useless bit of wire. Maybe that is why things are amiss at your end.
I've charged my friends HTC X One with the Nexus charger. Worked fine.
Haven't even taken the nexus charger out of the box. Been using my Samsung chargers from my SII with no issues. Hope I don't have a problem using the auto charger.
BTW, a search would have led you to this thread.

Guessing the charger you're trying to use isn't providing edd enough current... The standard charger puts out 2A (2000mA) when standard USB is 500mA and many chargers are 1A... That said no charger/cable combo I've tried has failed to charge (just sometimes it's glacially slow if its a 0.5A/1A charger)

Does your charging change from AC to USB?

My nexus so far seems great but i have this issue and idk if its a defect or idk? When i go to charge my phone with the stock AC adapter and even a HTC adapter it starts charging on AC then sometimes switches to USB and charges slower. And I have to like plug it in and out a few times for it to finally catch as AC its super annoying and my GNex never had that issue. And when i want to use the phone on AC the Charge Drops significantly sometimes discharging and im not even doing anything intensive. Does anyone have this issue? Is it a problem with the USB cable maybe? Or do you think this is a defect? Because its about to be 14 days and i dont have much left to get an RMA cause its what im considering and if I need it i dont have 380 dollars in my bank account either if i do need it so idk how that would work. Any help would be appreciated Thanks!
It lowers the incoming current, by dropping to usb charge, to help keep the battery cooler. They seem to be really trying to keep the battery temp down on this thing.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.
Really? Do you know the temps? Or does anyone? Cause sometimes it changes to USB after plugging it in for like 5 mins and i wouldnt think it gets that hot that quick. And when i finally get the AC to seem to stick the temps go up to 30-35 degrees celcius as normal and im getting around 850mah and it doesn't drop to usb charging it just drops current sometimes mainly when im using it obviously. So idk if it really is what you say or maybe someone could elaborate more?
I just want to get to the bottom of this issue so to know if i need to get an RMA :/
I forgot to mention that it also seems to randomly switch between AC/USB/UNPLUGGED really fast sometimes and i have to unplug and replug to get a charge I have no idea why.. I really want to know if its a software issue or hardware. Thats my main concern.
Woww this makes sense Ive been trying to figure out why this freaking thing was taking so long to charge. this reminds me of the galaxy s and how long that thing took. hopefully this is a software bug and they can get this thing worked out

I have that same problem with the charger that came in the box.once it goes to USB it take forever to charge but when I use the charger from my gnex it stays on ac and charges really fast not once does it goes to USB.so I tried the N4 charger on my HTC thunderbolt and gnex and both would go into USB mode and charge really slow.

For what it's worth, my Nexus 4 *NEVER* charges in an AC mode using the OEM charging plug, regardless of which power point / cable I use with it. And to charge from 'critical' to 100% took about 7 hours last night. Wtf.
It's been RMA'd as I don't believe this to be correct behaviour. Perhaps also related, the USB computer connection has stopped working. It'll charge via USB but won't connect to any computer.

Hmm so did you use the Gnex charger like the USB cable and AC adapter? Cause ive just used the ac adapters with the N4 Lg USB cable. It makes me think that the USB cable is **** to. I need to find another USB to test this out.

Yep, tried a whole bunch of different power sockets, usb charger plugs and cables. Still screwed. The more I read, the more its obvious that the devices behaviour isn't correct.
You should send it back because mine charges fine. It takes 2-3 hours to charge mine to full from empty. I'm using the charger and USB cable that came with the phone.
I'm actually facing the same thing, I slept for 3 hours and woke up to my phone being only 60% charged. I tried plugging it in and out a couple of times, and now its back to AC and not switching to USB anymore.
In using Franco kernel and even enabling USB fast charge doesn't keep it from showing USB.

I was looking at my LG charger and it seems to be missing one of the gold connectors on the male part of the cable Idk if this is normal but my gnex has all the gold connectors.

Yea mine is missing it to I wonder if that is why? And i just got my RAVpower external battery and that usb has all the pins and i tried to charge my phone with the lg brick and the ravpower usb and it seems to charge fine goes to ac every time. So im really wondering if its the LG USB that i got and it being faulty or not. I need to get another USB to test this out. Cause i dont want to swap out an entire phone for just a usb..
I've noticed mine charges as USB when using the stock LG charger. I had put it down to the 3 metre USB cable it was attached to, but I guess it's just a pants charger.
I just started having the same problem since Sunday. Had the phone for 2wks now. I had the same problem with my gs2. I really don't like these adaptor charger now a days. I go for the straight wall charger. Seems to work best. I think it's better because it doesn't convert to a usb cord as well, I don't know but I went ahead and ordered this one. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=150959459340 should be here Friday. it says original OEM charger for E960 nexus 4. We'll see.. I suggest direct wall charger instead of those USB adaptor that come with phones now.
I just looked at my USB charger from lg, it has 4 gold pins. Seems like they're all there, how many are there suppose to be??

That actually sounds like a good idea and should hopefully work! I need to order one. Still debating on Getting an RMA cause i dont want **** phone or worse phone..
Correction And it should have like 2 gold outer pins and 3 gold inner pins and mine and I guess a few other people have the outer pins but only 2 inner pins im missing the left most inner pin.

AC charger being detected as usb charger.

Left my phone charging overnight, woke up and it was only at 66%, downloaded ampere and when its plugged in it says usb charger and charges very slowly
Likely the cable... get a good QC compatible cable and it will probably take off. Or it's the charger, without some testing it is hard to be certain.
I had the same exact thing happen with a Turbo Power 25. I noticed a pin was missing in my first one so I bought another one and it said "AC" again. You might need a new charger.
Same problem here...it's not the cable because I have purchased several...I did read somewhere the phone gets hung up in USB mode but there was no solution. Sometimes I have it plugged in and it will die while charging.....

actually for me it was the cable, ordered a new one from amazon not even OEM, just a qualcom quickcharge 2.0 certified for like 12 bucks and charges normally
I've been using these cables for over a year now... Have probably 10-12 scattered across home, office, laptop bags, and that I have given away.
Eversame Bundle of 2 1.8M 6Ft Premium Nylon Braided Micro USB Cable, USB2.0 A Male to Micro B Data Sync Charger Cable Cord For Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, HTC One M7, LG V10, Nexus7-Blue Purple https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GR5PUBK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Ty4cybT3CJ40S
That are $8 for two cables. Eversame's custom service is excellent, I had one cable flake out and it was likely my fault, but when I contacted them they sent me two cables to replace the bad one.

New Phone Unresponsive after Charging

I received my first Essential phone for Christmas and everything worked fine the first day of use. I left the phone to charge overnight on the official charger and the phone was unresponsive the next morning (no charging indicator, LED, etc.). I tried holding the power button on for an extended period of time and tried to boot into recovery mode, but nothing happened.
Amazon sent a replacement that arrived 2 days ago. I set up the phone again and it worked fine the first day. After leaving the phone to charge for a while the second phone also became unresponsive with the same symptoms as before. I should note that with the second phone, I used the charger from the first phone to charge it too.
I'm now waiting for yet another replacement and I'm assuming there's an issue with my charger since that's the common element between both failures.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
This is seriously the identical situation I'm in right now. My second replacement phone that I got 24 hours ago, just turned off shortly after connecting to the charger. Became completely unresponsive. No indicator light, nothing. Happened to my for a replacement as well. Identical. Waiting to hear back from them to see what they are going to do. Honestly I just want a working phone at this point. This is getting frustrating.
Let me know how your experience goes or what they say. I'm at a loss.
Do either of you have another charger to try with?
It never happened to me and I've been using the stock charger as well as the 6P and 2 other aftermarket chargers from Amazon without issues.

I've tried multiple chargers and multiple AC bricks so far, and even a few different outlets around the house.
They want me to send the device back tomorrow (without a working phone in the mean time.) So they can inspect it and see if there's a "defect" before going any further.

I'm using a variety of chargers.
1. Stock at home at night.
2. LG G6 charger at home
3. Aukey USB-C at home
4. Aukey USB-C at work
5. Custom hardwired charger in my car using a 12-5v DC-DC converter.
Not one issue.

The only time I had charging issues was with the OEM charger.
Otherwise, I've used a samsung charger, an Anker charger with an adapter, an old Apple wall charger, some random costco charger, no issues.
