Screen-On high brightness issue - Huawei Mate 9 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi Guys,
what I found really terribly annoying is (I guess a bug) a bug related to the screen brightness.
When you switch on the phone - especially when having it next to the bed at night or in the morning, the screen goes to full or at least high brightness for 1-2s.
This is in my opinion quite awful while you get blinded like crazy when it happens. I usually have it on the charger at that time - so I don't know if it happens if not on the power-cord.
Can anyone confirm this on their own device? And is there any workaround?
I got a Porsche Design one, but I guess this issue is persistent on all Mate 9 Pro.

Automatic Brightness takes too long!

Hey everybody!
There's just one thing with this phone, wich annoys me a bit.
If Automatic Brightness is enabled, the display needs 7 seconds to adjust to new lighting conditions. Imo thats far too long, cause if you go outside in these days with the screen enabled you first have to wait till you can continue what you've done. It tooks the same time, if you unlock the phone till the s2 (or the light-sensor) gets aware of the environment.
Is this normal?
What's the reaction time of your s2? (test with a lamp by holding the phone down to it)
edit: it makes no difference if I en- or disable auto adjust screen power.
Thanks alot for your replys!
FW is KE7.
Greetings

Really? mine is much much quicker almost instantaneous. How do i know? because every time i play plants vs zombie, screen goes darker, lighter, darker, lighter depending on where my left hand is
you have the ke2 i guess!? so when you face it to a lamp it reacts quick?
i use ke7. i think it has something to do with that..
could some with ke7 post their time

Maybe
I had KE7 for a brief period but returned to KE2 after experiencing soft reboot issue with the music player. Also KE2 and older had abrupt change in brightness and they may have tuned it down a bit
is this fw-related? could some ke7-users post their time.
come on..about 150 views and just one user is answering?
3-6sec on KE7, kinda slow comproed to i9000 but probably they will fix in some next updates or devs from XDA will do kernel ala Speedmod wich manage this much better then stock one
i flashed back to ke2 just to test it. and my guess was right. it's fw-related. with ke7 they increased the reaction time. ke2 has sth about 1-3 sec.
could someone find a tweak to reduce the time on ke7?
If you really want to tweak it try JuiceDefender
One of the newest features is to control the light sensor, quite handy! I usually feel that the brightness is too high with android...
I have this same problem. My one needs 7sec to brighting up and darkening down.
The best test is when bright outside cover the light sensor with your finger and count how much time it needs to make the screen darker.
Im on KF2. But there was one rom i think it was KE4 i had no delays, sorry i had but only 2, 3 sec. All other roms needs 7 sec to make the screen lighter and darker
Its not 7 seconds for me but still it takes around 3-4 seconds. Well its not great but not bad either, this will get better and better with firmware upgrades.
Regards.

Let me give you a short and simple answer.
Stop worrying about burn in. There are people here who have the original Note with perfect screens.
Screen issues have been mostly resolved with the newest Super AMOLED panels. You can use facebook as long as you wish, if you do encounter any problems take the device back to Samsung and they should give you a replacement unit for use.
Enjoy your Note!

If you want your screen to be constantly ON for 1-1.5 years then AMOLED is not for you. But if you get something like 4 hours of screen time / day then you should be more than fine.
Brightness also matters a lot - IMHO current AMOLED can not last more than 365 * 8 hours at absolute max brightness without showing serious burn-in, but CAN last that much on auto.

I assume you haven't read everything I wrote, I use my phone max 3 hours in a day that to not constantly, I use it in short periods and I guess I use only 2 hours 3 hours is still way more than I actually use but still just the estimate time also I only use max brightness outdoors that too very rarely or else I keep it on auto.

I don't care that much about your situation, it was more of a generic answer for those guys that would be searching for the same question before posting it again and again

AOD kills S5's display

Hi Guys!
Everybody knows there are some roms, which have fully working Always On Display. I'm also using one of that roms, but I faced with a problem. Before the night I used the phone with the lowest brightness, and it worked fine. For the night I left switched on the AOD. After I woke up I saw that my phone's screen is flickering on the lowest brightness.
This is my second S5 dead like this...
this might be the answer to my query about why ive been seeing so many dead/dying displays as of late. Using AOD on a display that wasnt built for it is never a good idea. The AMOLED designed for this phone is over 3 years old (design-wise) not a good idea to torture it like one would with an AOD
Wow! Nice finding, thanks for sharing. Sorry for your losses. I'm glad I've never flashed those ROMs.

Because it's an lcd, it doesnt actually burn in. It's image retention or ghosting. I'm having the same problem. Lowering the brightness will help. I use automatic brightness and it works great. I've heard that using an app [Twilight] that can put a filter on the screen might help. Apply 5% filter for 30% brightness, and for every 10% brightness add another 5% filter. Example: 30% brightness, 5% filter, 40% brightness, 10% filter, 50% brightness, 15% filter, and so on. I don't know how much it will help but if it does that's always a good thing.

The maker of WETA has found if you lower the values of the screen just barely through KCAL compatible kernel it can stop the ghosting completely.
But that means you have to use a custom kernel that supports KCAL so if you aren't rooted you pretty much have to deal with it. It goes away eventually.

Try setting them to the lower values he personally uses and see. He says he likes it darker. I've noticed brightness seems to affect quite drastically on my end

I also thinks the same that brightness is key issue which is promoting ghosting
And auto brightness seems to work a lil bit

I just got my LG V20 US996 Friday afternoon & of course tested it at full brightness most of the time but will start using automatic brightness more regularly if it really helps prevent such eventual screen issues, I just noticed today for the first time on my Moto X Pure, which also has an IPS display, what looks like burn in that appeared suddenly not gradually..?
How common is (IPS vs other screen tech) burn in-ghosting-image retention with the LG V20/US996 & best ways to avoid it's if not really totally repairable? -Thnx
Finally i fixed it, AlhamduLillah!
.... How?
Supposedly the burn in for LCD displays is rare, part of why I bought the v20 in the first place. Except it's not rare, seems to happen more than it should. I ended out sending mine in for repair, barely still in warranty. I suggest those of you with issues and warranty do the same.
Screen burn in.

How? You can't just say you fixed it and then be silent about.
I'm having ghost issues as well now.
Is it the heat that makes the problem for the screen to do it? If that is the case one more reason to use a big battery like the mugen 9300 battery which keeps the heat of the phone down tremendously. Sadly iv changed back and forward on the stock battery and my big mugenpower - and now have the problem of ghost. I do mostly have my screen on 100% light all the time as one is not even able to adjust the auto function - I ordered the phone at 2017-Marts-09 and the issue has just raised in the last couple of weeks. I bumped up from 2 minutes turn on time to 5 minutes which seemed to be the time I began to get the ghost issue, which seems to be getting worse - but that could just have been a coincident.
Its not a big issue as such but it is still a little annoying having it around.
If it is an heat issue with the LCD - had I known I would just have used my big Mugenpower battery 9300 mAh all the time which keeps the phone at an stable 21-22 celsius degrees all the time. Stock battery sometimes fly over 40 Celsius when working.
It seemed there is a one year warranty on the phone but I'm not sure if it is actually worth doing anything in that regards.

The thread starter seems retarded for me sir.
I tried without success to use the 1 year warranty and sent my phone in TWICE to LG. Both times they did nothing but wipe the phone and claimed they fixed it.
I ended out going through my carrier which sent me a refurb phone, but it looked new. I would recommend anyone with similar issues do the same. You can change the colors of the screen and it improves what you can and can't see, but the burn-in is permanent.

I agree with battery drain issue, but everything except battery works perfectly for me, gps ok, sound and calling good, no crashing, fingerprint fast as lightning, mobile data never freezes for me and ambient display works fine. Im using stock april ROM.
Edit: talking about battery, I just dont know, I have a feeling that sometimes it drains and sometimes Its just okay, im a medium user, actually if I use my phone only for calling and some chatting - I have 40% left with 5,5 hours of SOT.
Posting my battery stats.
I get around 7hs of screen on time from a single charge. Not everyday I spend such much time with phone but on weekends I get around 7 or 7.5 hours.
The phone works well.. .it's not a top of the line phone, it's not a flagship (I came from a Galaxy S7, it burned itself). The camera app has to be changed to GCam if you want decent pictures.
So far, after the this month update, the one that provided April Security Patch Level, the only issue I'm facing is the Fingerprint bugs... half of the times that I want to unlock my phone it doesn't read correctly my finger and I end up using PIN to unlock it.
This wasn't an issue until this update, the fingerprint sensor and unlock was 100% accurate, never a miss... but Xiaomi fuc**d up with this month update.
Regards,
100% stock with April update.
No Battery issue, no fingerprint issue, in fact.... no issues at all, amazing phone.

I agree, but the battery could be a bit better, but it is 3000 mAh battery, not the 4000 like Redmi 4x and others.
I love my Mi A1 mate no issues whatsoever

I only had issues with idle drain which is now solved with April update for me at least. If I clear all apps from recents before sleep then I get 0% drain at night otherwise 1%. And fingerprint bugs? What does that even mean?

I have no idea where You got that list from as I don't recognize any of the issues at all!
I'v been using this phone since mid Nov -17 and travelling across Europe and Northern Africa several times without any hassle what so ever.
Of course there are "better" phones but as such, absolutely nothing to complain about.
There will always be people crying, whining, yelling and demanding for fixes, features and "issues" but quite many of those people "forget" to mention what they did before the "issues" started...
Unlocking, rooting, forcing updates and so on.
I don't get panic is a patch/update/fix is delayed a week or two or if I don't have the latest OS at same time as Nokia or Pixel phones...
This is my first "China phone" (6-7 earlier of various brands) I decided to let be original as long as ever possible and it just works.
Mobile data keeps falling away to the wrong frequencies. No real fix for it yet...
https://c.mi.com/thread-413908-1-1.html
I have no issues from the above list.
battery drain is very normal and and better than expected with my heavy use and it lasts from the time i disconnect from the charger in the morning until i get back to the charger late at night. camera is way better than expected (specially after enabling HRD+ using google camera) finger print never failed me and did not notice any mobile data drops that annoys me. sound is very clear during calls and the speaker is loud.
There's a larger amount of overnight battery drain than with my other phone (Essential PH-1) but the SOT is more than respectable and the fingerprint sensor is a lot more responsive than the one on my PH-1. The camera is only average which actually seems to be by design. Xiaomi phones normally take very good pictures but Google didn't enable the camera 2 api on this phone. Maybe Google doesn't want an Android One device to become competition for Google branded phones. I'm in the USA (which is not an official market for this phone) and pretty much the only issue I have encountered is that the MI A1 works way better on T-Mobile than AT&T. This is a really solid device for the price but at $200 it isn't intended as competition for flagship phones. But it is both fast and smooth and has pretty impressive build quality so I have no complaints.
