Because it's an lcd, it doesnt actually burn in. It's image retention or ghosting. I'm having the same problem. Lowering the brightness will help. I use automatic brightness and it works great. I've heard that using an app [Twilight] that can put a filter on the screen might help. Apply 5% filter for 30% brightness, and for every 10% brightness add another 5% filter. Example: 30% brightness, 5% filter, 40% brightness, 10% filter, 50% brightness, 15% filter, and so on. I don't know how much it will help but if it does that's always a good thing.

The maker of WETA has found if you lower the values of the screen just barely through KCAL compatible kernel it can stop the ghosting completely.
But that means you have to use a custom kernel that supports KCAL so if you aren't rooted you pretty much have to deal with it. It goes away eventually.

I believe off the top of my head it was just lower RGB by 10 points is all it took. Ineed to double check but try that in mean time

Try setting them to the lower values he personally uses and see. He says he likes it darker. I've noticed brightness seems to affect quite drastically on my end

I also thinks the same that brightness is key issue which is promoting ghosting
And auto brightness seems to work a lil bit

I just got my LG V20 US996 Friday afternoon & of course tested it at full brightness most of the time but will start using automatic brightness more regularly if it really helps prevent such eventual screen issues, I just noticed today for the first time on my Moto X Pure, which also has an IPS display, what looks like burn in that appeared suddenly not gradually..?
How common is (IPS vs other screen tech) burn in-ghosting-image retention with the LG V20/US996 & best ways to avoid it's if not really totally repairable? -Thnx

Finally i fixed it, AlhamduLillah!

.... How?

Supposedly the burn in for LCD displays is rare, part of why I bought the v20 in the first place. Except it's not rare, seems to happen more than it should. I ended out sending mine in for repair, barely still in warranty. I suggest those of you with issues and warranty do the same.

Screen burn in.

How? You can't just say you fixed it and then be silent about.
I'm having ghost issues as well now.
Is it the heat that makes the problem for the screen to do it? If that is the case one more reason to use a big battery like the mugen 9300 battery which keeps the heat of the phone down tremendously. Sadly iv changed back and forward on the stock battery and my big mugenpower - and now have the problem of ghost. I do mostly have my screen on 100% light all the time as one is not even able to adjust the auto function - I ordered the phone at 2017-Marts-09 and the issue has just raised in the last couple of weeks. I bumped up from 2 minutes turn on time to 5 minutes which seemed to be the time I began to get the ghost issue, which seems to be getting worse - but that could just have been a coincident.
Its not a big issue as such but it is still a little annoying having it around.
If it is an heat issue with the LCD - had I known I would just have used my big Mugenpower battery 9300 mAh all the time which keeps the phone at an stable 21-22 celsius degrees all the time. Stock battery sometimes fly over 40 Celsius when working.
It seemed there is a one year warranty on the phone but I'm not sure if it is actually worth doing anything in that regards.

The thread starter seems retarded for me sir.

I tried without success to use the 1 year warranty and sent my phone in TWICE to LG. Both times they did nothing but wipe the phone and claimed they fixed it.
I ended out going through my carrier which sent me a refurb phone, but it looked new. I would recommend anyone with similar issues do the same. You can change the colors of the screen and it improves what you can and can't see, but the burn-in is permanent.

Recalliberate it (drain to 0%.. turn phone on until its unable to turn on.. fully charge phone).. you could also get the 1600 mAh in the video, not much of a upgrade from the stock 1500 mAh though.
- Use dark wallpaper (and dark notifications bar if you're rooted)
- Brightness level to 0.. make sure Power saving mode is off + browser brightness to 0
- GPS off
You could get a second normal battery for cheaper and not have a giant phone.

Might as well have just said "And no more happiness!"
I will admit the dark wallpaper helps a lot if you are on the home screen quite a bit. But the brightness down to 0 is a little extreme. I don't notice much in the way of a huge drain if my screen is up at 50 versus being at 0. There is some drain at 100 though, but still not all that much.
The battery draining and recharging helps a lot too. Also, keeping 3G off in areas where you have very weak coverage (when its constantly switching from E to 3G and back) helps. If you are in one of those areas for a long amount of time each day and have access to Wifi, use that instead.
Basically my feeling is that the main draw of these phones is the gorgeous screen coupled with the GPU. It's a media and gaming-lovers phone, so why completely ruin that experience by keeping brightness at 0?

The brightness is still really bright even in the dark at 0. Maybe I'm just used to it but thats how I feel. I've seen threads which people who agree with me in regards to having the brightness at 0 and wondered if there was anyway to make it even LESS bright.
ugly
i'm sure someone will come out with a 1600mah battery or something slightly bigger.
but yeah, i would just get a cheap-o replacement if needed. battery life is a non-issue for me

Heck, just call TMobile's support line and tell them you have terrible battery life, and they'll send you a new battery. I just got off a chat with them and I'm getting a new battery in a few days, free of charge, no shipping, and I don't even have to send the old one back.
I never understand people saying, oh just turn the brightness off, turn syncing off, don't use X program, don't have any fun on your phone. Thats like someone buying a Lambo and telling them they will get better gas mileage if they only drive 30. By now people should know that all smartphones get horrible battery life compared to normal phones. Just get a second battery and swap it out, takes like 30 seconds to change batteries.

I have a 3200 for the G1, it gets about 30 days of uptime on wifi with no sim. I was getting a solid 5 days of heavy use on it.

This was quite common with the S2, what you can try is to power off your phone and remove the battery for 20-30mins, if the same issue occurs either the battery sensor is messed up or IDK.
Happened with my infuse in the summer out in the sunlight and i posted a topic in there about it. They say its normal

Is there a way to remove this protection?
When I have the gps in the car I get that all the time, even if the phone is not hot at all, very annoying because with the sun and sunglasses -> cant see the screen very well.. stupid!
If you have one of those tpu softcases you will not know whether or not your note is hot just by the feel. Those cases are terrific insulators. I had overheating with the Note on GPS and charging. It actually shut down once and dropped out of the GPS signal a couple of times. Took the Nillikin case off and found that the whole phone was very hot.
After the case was removed I continued the trip with four days of continuous GPS and on charge with no problems. Even with the TPU naked, it still got pretty warm at the top half of the phone, but worked fine with brightness set pretty high. I think this is normal for the Note
[FiX] Galaxy Note ICS OVERHEATING PROBLEM SOLVED
[FiX] Galaxy Note ICS OVERHEATING PROBLEM SOLVED:
1 Go to settings- developer options - UNCHECK "Dont keep activities"
2 Use go launcher ex (or some other good launcher...) instead of default launcher
3 Instal from google play android assistant and use it to clean cache and stop most of background process
4 install from google play "cpu master free" (MUST HAVE ROOTED PHONE) and set 1000 MHz for MAXIMUM, and check box "set on boot"
P.S. DO NOT expect that your phone will be cold as ice after you do this...
ICS is build that you can use max. out of dual core, and galaxy note is pretty slim and back is made out of plastic...All that increase heating problem...
Hope i helped! =D
download the free version of "watchdog" and it will give you an alert if any software uses a lot of cpu power, you might have to go into setting and add system process to the watch list, you can also whitelist and blacklist program so they are killed as soon as they cpu usage goes above a certain level, though this might be pro version only.
Only use watchdog to find the problem and then remove it as it can use quite a bit of cpu power itself.

Hi legion =)
I most often use phone at 100% brightness simply just because I like it when the screen is bright and clear, colors appear nicely too on high brightness. And outdoors in sunlight its sometimes hard to see whats on the screen even though brightness is set to 100%. You were right about the burn-in. Can see some burn-in if looking very carefully, depending on what colors there are on the screen over the burn-int areas. But still they are so weak and hard to notice even when you know where to look for those areas that I will probably have bought a galaxy note 2 or maybe even 3 before they appear clearly visible and too annoying to endure

Short bright screen flash when turning on the Note

More people experience this issue? Once in a while, when I turn on the Note, the screen brightness will go from its maximum level to the standard operating level. This happens in just a few ms, so it seems like the screen is flashing. I don't like this a bit. Faulty device or general issue?

yes deep sleep fault :cyclops:
My S3 used to flash bright green. Or blue, if it was feeling rebellious.
Haven't seen my Note 3 do it yet, but that's more because I haven't paid attention to it.
Maybe deep sleep issue or maybe hardware fault

When i was using stock brightness control, I noticed this happens when you switch off the screen in a well lit environment, than switch it back on in a dimmer place...since using third party brightness control, haven't noticed this anymore. Stock brightness control in auto mode sucks big time.

I have this same problem!
It realy kills your eyes when your in a dark room and it flashes bright screen on wake!

Faulty Light Sensor?

Has anyone had any problems with the light sensor on their Nexus 6P?
I've noticed that it works fine if the light is shining directly onto the device, but it's not so good at picking up ambient light.
If I put my Nexus 6P and Nexus 9 flat on my desk at work, I get a reading of 225 lux on the Nexus 9 and 226 lux on the Nexus 6P - basically the same.
But if I pick up both devices and stand them upright on the desk, the Nexus 9 shows 90 lux and the Nexus 6P shows just 36 lux.
Most of the time this isn't a problem, but if I'm using it somewhere where the light levels are borderline and change a lot (like on a bus or train at night) I find that the device ends up changing the brightness a lot because there's not much light directly shining on the screen.
I've been using the free App "Sensors" from the Play Store to check the light levels - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.calintat.sensors
Has anybody noticed anything similar? I'm running stock on build MDA89D (not had any OTAs yet).
I am seeing the same behavior with my 6P. Borderline light conditions at all, and the brightness is constantly changing.

Could you check the readings you get from the light sensor when it's happening?
There are lots of apps that will let you see the sensor readings.
I noticed this last night in a dark room with a few lamps on -- the brightness would just randomly increase and decrease.
Yep, was sitting on the couch last night reading in a moderately lit room and the screen would randomly get bright and then dim again. Got so annoyed that I turned off adaptive brightness and will just adjust the screen manually. My biggest complaint with this awesome phone.
Nothing to add except that I also turned off adaptive brightness as it wasn't functioning properly and was pretty annoying.

Would you be able to try and get some light sensor readings in that same location?
I'd be very interested to know if it's the same cause as mine.
Same thing here with the low light. It kept going bright and slowly back to dim where it should be.
Same issue. This and being virtually unable to use the phone in direct sunlight are my only two gripes.
Watching the sensor as I move around it bounces all over the place where as with my S5 the sensor readings appear much more constant.
Same issue, I wonder if it's software or faulty device
I checked out the light sensor In the lux app as I was having a similar issue, I can see the sensor go from 1 lux to 11 even though it's in a pretty dim room at night, it keeps changing...
Same for me.

Overheating Issues - thermal throttling constantly

So ive had my device < 12 hours and ive run into this issue twice already.
The OS warns that the device is overheating and throttles down brightness etc, you can clearly feel the screen and the back both piping hot.
First time was when i was installing all of my apps, i gave it a pass and thought perhaps it was hard work for the CPU , however it has occured again today when i was on a video call and went outside in the sun for 5 minutes, yes just 5 minutes.
For reference, i am using 120hz and QHD+ with auto brightness.
Is anybody else experiencing similar or do i have defective device?
I'm going to get replacement through Amazon myself in regards to the screen. I haven seen this issue

Please can you try running a video call outside (max brightness as its hot today) and see if you get more than >10 mins without it heating ?
Ive spoke to OP they have made me do a cache reset and to try again for 1 day.
Annoying as my screen uniformity appears fine , so i won that lottery but lost this one.

Annoying as my screen uniformity appears fine , so i won that lottery but lost this one.

I've been on a teams call for 1 hour all fine no more or less hot than my note 10. Battery drain slightly better. I also ran an extreme 3D Mark benchmark outside and its around 20 degrees celcius out here. Max brightness. All fine.
I'm happy so far.
If things change will let y'all know

Ok so atleast you havent got to go to a drop off point re:covid.
Are you going to buy another or sit back and wait? Im coming from an S8+ , nearly got 7t pro last year, then note 10+ , then s20+ and then settled with this - so very dissapointed

Same as you I've been looking at each new phone coming out. I will buy again. I'm currently waiting for it to come back in stock as they said they would replace it that way

Just tried the same test, outside 100% brightness with qgd+ 120hz, test run for abit 5 mins before the message came up
Im seriously thinking of returning and going with the s20 + for £850 (with samsungs 15% off) . Had samsungs for years, just fancied a change and this is my first experience of OP
Gotta admit I would buy an s20 ultra as you can find them at similar price now but the exynos 990 is so bad its put me off

oh yea, i forgot about the exonos
The snapdragon was on of the reasons i got this phone but at this point its not dissipating heat very well in my device!
Question is do i get a swap and risk getting a bad panel (mine is fine) or wait to see if its a software issue that they release a fix for...
Think I might be getting overheating too to add to all the other crap. Probably return it, too many problems.

Dude if it's amazon just order another to come tomorrow and return that one for refund if in stock
That's what I love about amazon. Free hermes or post office returns label if you return as faulty.

Normally that would be fine but i live with a vulnerable person so have to be so careful going anywhere right now and post offices arent essential obviously

I've used FaceTime on an iPhone outside in the sun and had it shutdown due to temperature before. So this isn't something I would consider a defect really. The screen also gets very bright on Auto Brightness when in direct sunlight so try using the phone inside under normal conditions and see how It does.
