So ive had my device < 12 hours and ive run into this issue twice already.
The OS warns that the device is overheating and throttles down brightness etc, you can clearly feel the screen and the back both piping hot.
First time was when i was installing all of my apps, i gave it a pass and thought perhaps it was hard work for the CPU , however it has occured again today when i was on a video call and went outside in the sun for 5 minutes, yes just 5 minutes.
For reference, i am using 120hz and QHD+ with auto brightness.
Is anybody else experiencing similar or do i have defective device?
I'm going to get replacement through Amazon myself in regards to the screen. I haven seen this issue

Please can you try running a video call outside (max brightness as its hot today) and see if you get more than >10 mins without it heating ?
Ive spoke to OP they have made me do a cache reset and to try again for 1 day.
Annoying as my screen uniformity appears fine , so i won that lottery but lost this one.

I've been on a teams call for 1 hour all fine no more or less hot than my note 10. Battery drain slightly better. I also ran an extreme 3D Mark benchmark outside and its around 20 degrees celcius out here. Max brightness. All fine.
I'm happy so far.

Ok so atleast you havent got to go to a drop off point re:covid.
Are you going to buy another or sit back and wait? Im coming from an S8+ , nearly got 7t pro last year, then note 10+ , then s20+ and then settled with this - so very dissapointed

Just tried the same test, outside 100% brightness with qgd+ 120hz, test run for abit 5 mins before the message came up
Im seriously thinking of returning and going with the s20 + for £850 (with samsungs 15% off) . Had samsungs for years, just fancied a change and this is my first experience of OP
Gotta admit I would buy an s20 ultra as you can find them at similar price now but the exynos 990 is so bad its put me off

oh yea, i forgot about the exonos
The snapdragon was on of the reasons i got this phone but at this point its not dissipating heat very well in my device!
Question is do i get a swap and risk getting a bad panel (mine is fine) or wait to see if its a software issue that they release a fix for...
Think I might be getting overheating too to add to all the other crap. Probably return it, too many problems.

I've used FaceTime on an iPhone outside in the sun and had it shutdown due to temperature before. So this isn't something I would consider a defect really. The screen also gets very bright on Auto Brightness when in direct sunlight so try using the phone inside under normal conditions and see how It does.

I thought I'd share some hopefully helpful information with you guys after having to have 2 swap outs of my Nexus S after getting it on launch day.
I had done an awful lot of reading prior to getting my Nexus to make sure I was pretty clued up about any potential launch bugs which seem to plague a number of handsets these days.
The first thing I noticed with my first phone was the unusually fast battery drain and long charge times, I could hardly go through daylight hours without my phone needing charge (Battery indicator showing orange or red). The following night I left the phone with 55% charge and went to sleep. When I woke up the phone was off, strange I thought; turns out it had eaten the rest of the battery over night.
The final straw came when I reset the phone to default settings (thinking it was a rogue app causing the drain) and it still ate the battery within a day. At this point I knew something was up, especially as reviewers were commenting that the battery seemed considerably better than a lot of other Android handsets.
I decided to take it back to Best Buy to get a swap out, long story short the sales rep. tested the battery and told me that it was defective. He then said he would swap out just the handset and battery with another unit, great I thought!
My relief was soon disturbed when I realised something wasn't right with the screen on my new handset. Not only was the screen a pee yellow colour (compared with the cool temperature of the original) there was also significant banding within the grey area of the the pull down notification tray. These problems had also been mentioned on the Engadget review and even if they hadn't I'm pretty sure I still would have noticed it straight away regardless.
After another trip back to Best Buy and a reluctant second swap out on their part, I have what seems like a fully working handset with a good battery and decent AMOLED panel.
I don't know what's happening with Samsung's QC or whether they have large tolerances for their panels, but I would have thought that they would have been able to iron a lot of this out having already launched the Galaxy S series.
A slightly long post but I hope this at least saves some of you the hassle I've been through to get a decent handset. This isn't the first time it's happened either, I had problems with my launch day iPhone 4 with the mic not working.
One thing's for sure, I'm going to be far more vigilant when buying my next handset.
also test ur buttons because they can be loose and the back button sometimes has problems
nothing new for samsung QA
Unfortunately, having come from the epic, this seems par for the course for sammy..I'd high hopes Google would counter this, but I guess not. My first and only ns is wonderful, though I ordered online and it seems the majority of complaints are coming from those that ordered at the store..coincidence?

Sadly, Google != Apple, they don't produce their own hardware. Depending on Samsung, with their known ****ty QA is a risk I'm sure they weighed.
I ordered my NS online and have none off theses issues! Actually my battery life is AWESOME. 16 hours straight between charging. I love it!

3G supported band
Guys,
Some thing out of the topic, but i need to ask is that is there any sort of 3G band limitation in US version of NS? My friend in Canada told me that currently all devices are coming only with AWS support for 3G which is supported by limited number of Cellular Operators.
Any ideas?

Having the same battery problem, please help
I am also having the same battery problem. It seems like the battery drains 1% per minute. I need to keep it charging all the time or it will drain in about 90 minutes. And it takes 8-9 hours to charge it to 100%.
Problem is I can't just take it back to Best Buy since I live overseas and a friend brought it to me from the US. So now what do I do?
1. Is it the battery or the phone? If it is the battery then I can just replace the battery, but I can't find anywhere online to buy the same battery? Any ideas?
2. If it is the phone, is there anything I can do w/o having to send it back to the USA?
Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks but this seller won't ship outside the USA. I found a bunch of similar ones on eBay, but they are all 1440 milliamps and not 1500 milliamps.
Not sure if the one on Amazon is 1440 or 1500.

I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing frequent reboots? I am averaging about one a day with really light use(under one hour screen on time). It sometimes freezes at the unlock screen just after the power button is pressed to wake it up after being idle for a while. Other times it will reboot while its just sitting there. My phone is currently on stock ROM and is not rooted.
I did every day and it also got very warm whilst supposedly idle. I got a replacement and have had just 1 reboot in just over a week and it runs cooler too.
I suggest you get it replaced.
Ps. Do you have poor battery life too because it's a lot better with my new phone.

So your replacement "only" rebooted once in a week? Correct me if i'm wrong, but from my understanding, a phone is NEVER supposed to reboot for no reason.

Correct. But I'd consider that acceptable considering it has no other hardware flaws and put it down to buggy software or a rogue app. If it's an isolated reboot then I'm happy, a reboot every day certainly points to a hardware issue and not acceptable.

To me it's unacceptable, as it obviously shouldn't do this and the device seems to be defective if it just does that. Also, there are other hardware flaws, for example that the device gets so hot that it needs to throttle the performance after ~5 mins of work and has to completely shut down after ~10 minutes.

That is not a flaw, the S4 Pro can't disperse heat efficiently in a small device. Not to mention that even throttled, it's probably still the strongest chipset in terms of brute power.

I'm just realistic when it comes to tech. If my only issue is 1 isolated reboot (which it is at the moment) then I'm happy. Don't think I've ever owned anything with a chip that hasn't at least restarted/frozen once.
Sure the phone gets warm under heavy use but I haven't noticed any slowdown in real use so all good. PS My previous did stutter when hot, unlike this one, so I'm certain that was faulty.

That's not correct. There are other phones with exactly the same CPU, and none of them throttle. Only Nexus 4 does.

I don't really give a sh** what you consider normal work. I've never used that term.
When there's a game that needs the full performance of an S4 pro and the N4 can't deliver it, it won't run. The N4 is the only device that cannot run it's max stated clock frequency.

I think I'm mostly in denial at the moment. I really want this phone to be awesome, however I had my first random reboot about 15 minutes after I got it on the 16th of November. Battery life has been quite horrible most of the time due to the "msm_hsic_host wakelock" issue. I have never had a defective phone and I wasn't ready for a "nexus" to be one. Yes I know it can and does happen. I keep telling my self "4.2.2 will fix all the things".

Do you happen to have a widget that is polling your location? I had HD Widgets installed, with my GPS off it kept rebooting my phone... Now it seems a-ok! This issue has been brought to Google's attention and I think they're working on it.
I don't have the msm_hsic wakelock anymore... Solved that with Franco's kernel and it really improved my battery life.
Hopefully this helps!
I don't, I am running minimal installed apps :-/ . I also have the buzz in the ear piece while on and off calls. It's time to RMA I guess.
I bit the bullet and ordered a new one :-/ The rep I got was awesome and the overall experience was good. Unfortunately I was made aware that a replacement could be 2 weeks away. Today my phone was off charger for 4 hours in good reception. Screen on time less than 10 mins, sleep time was just over and hour and I have 48% battery left. blah.

Give it a couple days and a few charge cycles. once the phone and kernel settle is when you'll know how the phone it truly running. Also, letting a battery die IS BAD for the battery NOT helpful. It's NEVER good to let a battery reach zero, regardless if its the first charge or not. That was the way you did it with an old Ni-Cad batteries to create a memory. These batteries are Lithium-Ion, they never create a memory. It's better to charge it around 15-20% and overall best to charge at around 50% fir longer battery life (more charge cycles).

Yeah it will get warm playing games and a bit of Yahoo video streaming of will get warm. Mine never seems to get more then 94°f or so
Like others have said, it's the chip plus the fact the entire thing is made of metal.
Hi all,
I got my S20 a couple days back and never since that day have I not seen my phone heat up every now and then.
Heavy multi-tasking ; this thing starts to warm up which is normal but what is not normal is how excessively hot this device get when using the camera for a little over 5 minutes , whether it is recording videos or clicking pictures, this device becomes unreasonably hot.
Playing a little bit of game on highest settings for a couple of minutes shouldn't be causing as much heat as the S20 ends up generating.
I am skeptical for the logetivity of this device if this heating up keeps up on such trivial tasks.
Not sure, but has anyone before ever experience this kind of problem and has seen the OEM actually fix it with mere software updates?:fingers-crossed:
Let's discuss the status of each of our devices and figure if only a bunch of us have the devices which are behaving like this or is it happening with all of our phones?
SD S20 owners can also pitch in for comparison.:good:
Thank you.
Yes I'm also experiencing same thing. Even watching a 3-4 minute video on YouTube makes the phone feel warm. Camera heats up the phone very quickly.
Hope Samsung solves the issue.
Same problem on camera it heats up rilly fast, not seeing that in you tube though..
Same here...or even worse. 5 mins on facebook/twitter and then the device becomes obviously warm.
Same thing happens when doing wireless charging. It still gets warm quite quickly even when fast wireless charging is disabled.
Exynos S20 exynos 990
Same problem. So I went to Samsung Service center and told them the problem regarding this overheating issue. What they are telling me is that 41.8 degrees(what they have read from my device using a thermal scanner) is normal (I don't think so as 42 degrees for trivial task is absurd) also they inform me that they will reinstall the operating system once again and check whether the problem still persists, if yes replacement will be done by giving us one certificate that we can take it to the shop where we have bought the phone and get a new s20 (what a lengthy process).

New Software updates
Since I wrote this post, there have been two updates pushed by samsung.
None of them made any dent to the slew of problems that this phone has been having.
I tested antutu score, I know they are not the real test for day to day usage but these scores have actually dropped since latest update.
The camera albeit is better at focusing , I can testify to that as I made two videos before and after the updates and I can see some difference but the heating is still going on like crazy.
Now I think, Samsung should have added a heat vapor chamber in the phone to manage this hot garbage.
Very disappointed to have payed so much and not even get the performance as good as the last year's SD devices.
Facing the same issue. I just want to know how can I get is replaced.
Samething on Exynos. When it hits 40c, it automatically switches to 60hz and get back when it cools down. Exynos was never good.
But one thing I can say for sure if you are worry about longevity. Never user your phone while it is charging. One thing is using your phone hot while discharging. Another thing is using it while charging and it will definitely impact battery life long term speaking.
I would disable fast charging too.
Same here! And if you have like 30-35% battery and your phone begins to heat up, say goodbye to 120hz, I think it throttles so hard that the performance can't go beyond 60.
It is really very very disappointing .It gets up so hot just using the device continues for 30 min. Once the temp cross 40+ it switches to 60hz. hahahah for this we have to pay a premium price.
Have already started to have 2nd thoughts for next galaxy devices with exynos. really really very annoying to use this phone these day in hot summers.
I hope to get it fixed soon. if not probably iam goning to quit this phone. very disappointed.
Display turns into yellow
Same problem here with ultra exynos after watching serval videos and using camera for 10 to 15 mins. At low brightness display turns yellowish because of heat and screen turns into 60 hz automatically. Has anyone noticed this yellowish problem?

Yeah, noticed that too. I tried turning off the 120hz and it fixed the issue.

That's strange. I have noticed 2 times yellowish display like a filter and after increasing the brightness it was OK but after reducing again it went to yellowish. Thank you for the info..

Same. But it wasn't happening before so it might be a software bug.

Same issue
Same problem here guys, I am very frustrated.
First of all why make two variants, one with snapdragon an other with exynos?
Why this discrimination?
Secondly why should I pay for a flagship and get a less than flagship experience?
I hope it is partly software fixable.
I am so gonna be very unpleasant and persistent at support. Greece here and bought s20 two days ago

It goes back to the early 90's when Samsung made a trade deal with Qualcomm. As a result of the trade deal, Samsung were allowed to use Qualcomms products but only in the markets where Samsung's products didn't compete directly with Qualcomms i.e the USA.
Nobody held a gun to your head when you bought the device. You could've just done a simple Google search and found a way to import the SD variant. Samsung aren't discriminating - it's called business.
If you dont like the Exynos variant, the OnePlus 8 is being announced on the 14th - that'll surely have the SD865.
It sucks, the only software solution I can see is throttling TBH.
Honestly thinking about cutting my losses on my S20+

Least expected from a flagship
I have a S20 and it heats up to that level that with a cover also it gets uncomfortable to hold. And this observation is with not any heavy use, very routine use like checking Gmail, watching Youtube, browsing Instagram.
I sold my one plus 5t and got this phone, very disappointed, should have waited and bought a one plus only. Samsung, if you are hearing me please fix this - if it's a hardware issue, please recall and provide a replacement, if it's a software issue please fix. But stop asking customers to go to service centres as it is not a specific problem to any phone. Most if not all exynos customers are facing it.
We been really ****ed over by samdong with latest updates the charging has gone from 1 hr to charge from 0 to 100 too 80 mins and only reason i can think of is because of the overheating that exynos is suffering so we pay nearly 1400 notes for this piece of **** and its getting worse on every update **** you samdong
As the title states already hating this phone and I still have like 700 left to pay on it. It Overheats atleast 2 times a day if not more. Can't seem to handle much I only live in the UK. I would hate to be somewhere where it is hot all the time.
Wow that's bad glad I don't face these issues. My device had been running smoothly from day one and no overheating even with 35°C and up.
Do you mind sharing what you're doing with your device when it overheats?
When being used in my car and when playing Pokémon go usually. I know it could be classed as high usage.
But I have never had this problem before. And definitely not while in use in my car being charged using maps and music etc
Better make sure you don't overheat yourself while driving. My device doesn't get a chance to overheat while navigating as it is positioned in front of the air-conditioning keeping it nice and cool.
I've had overheating in the past with my Note 9 but haven't seen it one my OP8Pro yet.
However it might have something to do with the latest firmware as my device does get warmer than before and battery drains much faster.

I have exactly the same issue as described. Only solution I found to 'lower' a bit the occurences of getting this annoying message that the phone is overheating, as well as a severe throttling of the screen and CPU, is to force the phone to use specific CPU frequencies depending on what app is running (scenarios). I do this through Franko Kernel Manager, but maybe some other apps could offer the same functions. I do love that phone but this overheating issue is seriously getting on my nerves too...

What OS you running mate? Where's it from ? What model?
It's more than likely that a particular region / model / firmware will be having more issues than others.
On a personal note my device has remained cool even after playing Dreamcast games via a Bluetooth controller for over an hour. Just doesn't overheat, the 865 has great efficiency which was one of its plus points over the 855. Probably the CPU / GPU has an imperfect contact with your heatsink.
If that's the case then it'll progress and will end up a lot worse, so an RMA would be the only option, be sure to get the tech to make some notes.

Normal unrooted stock. OnePlus UK OnePlus 8 Pro.
It seems to run hot to the touch most of the time.
I am having the same issues.
I got the phone two days ago, still not facing these issues.
I've been driving my current car for almost 2 years now. I've used a magnetic phone holder on an AC vent and have turned that vent off ever since. For 2 years I've charged phones will using Google Maps/music streaming with no issues. Phones include Galaxy S10, S20U, Note 10, OP 7, etc. with no issues. This OnePlus 8 Pro overheats very easily and I've resorted to actually turning the AC vent on in order to avoid it.
I'm not sure what happened, but the 8 Pro has had some serious QC issues.
Maybe a factory reset would help with overheating issues, a total wipe. I used fastboot erase userdata while in the bootloader mode. I had a couple of issues and after resetting, they seemed to go away.

Yea defo not right pal, send that back.. if it's from three then go into store, see if they can swap over the counter.
Had my phone a week and its done it once. Was in the car sitting on my console kinda in direct sunlight and charging. This worries me cause (what if I go to the beach will it overheat) and (2) what if I have it in the holder on my bike while I'm out and about will it overheat?

It's been 35C + in the UK this past week and my phone has remained cool throughout, no problems whatsoever.
The 865 is a great chip, it's extremely efficient unless you get a bad one which could happen with any SOC, even Intel and AMD have some bad eggs. It happens unfortunately.
Same as some chips overclock better than others
Has happened to me numerous times too. Usually when using Android Auto in the car (not when it's warm outside) and also when outside in the sun. This is my 2nd 8pro and it happened on the first too.

Are you charging and using GPS at the same time during use of Android auto?
Thats a sure fire way to bake any phone, even a stand alone GPS unit.

Nope. On its own. I have to blow the aircon on the phone to keep it cool when navigating. Also using the phone this week with my drone I couldn't see the screen because it kept on overheating and decreasing the brightness. Never happened once on my 7pro.

I haven't had that issue in any way, was playing Dreamcast and Wii games for a few hours earlier, didn't even feel warm.
GPS can be a drain on power, depends on a few things though.
But turning off like that? I would suggest that's a fault. Probably an imperfect contact with the heatsink.
Just a thought but are you running QHD and 5G.
I don't use either.. try turning to 4G and FHD, might be why?
If not then I'd see what OnePlus or your supplier can do about a replacement. Really need to get the point over that its not a software issue, probably perform a factory wipe just to be sure prior to sending anything off to them.
Shame that it's happening to be honest.

The phone dims the display when it starts to overheat and a message pops up saying it's overheating. Jerry rig shows two dollops of heat sink paste on the CPU so I suspect OP know then have problems, they've also decreased the max brightness after an update most likely to counteract the overheating. It's happened with my two 8pros so I doubt it's a manufacturing ,most likely the SOC naturally runs warmer or the design doesn't dissapate heat effectivity. Doesn't bother me massively but it does happen.
