latest and greatest 10.1? - Android Head-Units

Was curious if anyone was still looking at 10.1's? I have been kicking them around for a year and some change, I keep getting caught up in the stats. I see they come out with a new O/S but then have the old chipset or vice versa. What I like that I see is 8.0 O/S Octacore with 4gb but can't seem to find a brand to do it all together in a 10.1 but have it in the regular double din. The three brands I had been kicking around is Pumpkin, Joying, and started to think about Phoenix since I talked to them at SEMA but have since dropped the ball on emails about custom options. I started looking at their Telsa screen setup and was hoping to get something where I could input my car into the home screen but they didn't respond to my email.
Anyways, I would really appreciate some input because once I get a few other things on the car finished up I want to start into the stereo system. Thanks in advance, I tried adding to another thread without a response.

Slight update, finally found one that says it should have that in the main heading. But when you go into item description it shows the old info, wondering if it is just a copy paste error?
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/JOYING-new-2GB-RAM-Android-6-0-car-head-unit-with-video-out-2din-10-1inch/32822543398.html

I recently got the xtrons TE103AP
works pretty good: 4g ram px5 Oreo...

Figured I would bump this again since I am still trying to work all this out. I have now thought about doing 2 10.1 screens in my car, they have now bumped up the ROM to 64 with Android 8.1 but it does not have the fast boot. They say I can do the 32gb version with Android 8.0 but kinda annoys me that it is the same price. I am thinking they will be coming out with new models soon since they are now running a 10% special on their website. I would really appreciate some advice because I keep going back and forth. I did look into the Xtron but really don't like the button setup on it and it is now lacking in stats. Thanks in advance for any input

For reference these are the two units
no fast boot

Sony xav-601bt - Android based headunit with MirrorLink

For those of you who don't know about these new head units. It is the first headunit that is running an Android based operating system that is compatible with MirrorLink.
I can't post a link but if you google "mobile electronics magizine xav-601bt" you can find a lot of info on it.
I am curious what people are going to do with these once it is rooted, just think of the possibilities!
What are the chances we can get MirrorLink to work on all android based devices? So far it looks to only be planned for new phones but I am sure that we could change that.
Nobody else thinks this is amazing? You now can install an android based computer/audio/video in your car that you can mirror your phone's interface on!! Literally your car can now do everything your phone does, something people have wanted to do years.
I'm doing some research on the XAV-601BT right now. Saw you posted some info on another car audio site and I would like to know what you think of the unit. Such as: what apps would currently integrate an xperia pro freshly updated to android 4.** and are there any known issues with particular devices or configurations? Any mod sites messing around with getting rid of the bugs yet, safety nannies or performance wise? I can't find much besides chatter yet.
You mentioned that you had access to a unit and if it is installed could you give some details of what it is pushing and how it is performing?
Thanks allot. I am holding out for another unit that has been delayed again but this might make me pull the trigger. And yes, the prospect of running all my phone apps via my head unit makes me happy, let alone being able to root and customize.

I think you don't have the right phone for it.. only Nokia and the new Samsung Galaxy S3 support Mirror Link.
I've read somewhere that Mirror Link is hardware based, but maybe it's the same technology as MHL.
Thanks for the reply. I read that the 2012 Xperias would be MirrorLink capable too. I came across conflicting information on it being implementable for smartphones that had output capabilities of uUSB and HDMI like my Xperia pro. If a phone can support RealVNP I think it should work but I'm just learning about this technology. I've got some research to do on this before I pull the trigger because I want/need qwerty with my hand size and I don't see anything similar to the pro in the pipeline that would come factory capable with MirrorLink.
Anybody know for sure what it would take to run MirrorLink on a phone like the 2011 Xperia pro?

He is right about the S3 and nokia phones being the first supported. Windows phones and other phones are expected in the future but there is little information available. I originally heard that mirrorlink was a hardware solution but now I believe it is software. There is a good chance that it could be ported but it is going to be hard to tell until the S3 launches and some people on here start playing with it. I also hope they make an area for the XAV-601BT and XAV-701HD on this site so people can start focusing on rooting the unit as it is Android bassed.
I have used the unit and even without the mirrorlink it is an amazing unit. It literally does everything I could want in a double din head unit.
I currently have the xav-601bt i picked up from my audio shop yesterday. I also have a htc sense and the unit will only display unsuported device. Speaking with the sony west coast rep today, I was informed that there will be rollouts for the mirror link. It seems that it will be an app you can download from the play store.
The rollouts are expected to be every 60 days, but as for what phones are capable of running the mirror link protocol remains a mystery.
I offered my phone to be tested for there software but he will have to check with his higher ups about that. I am hoping that it will soon be available for download and one of the developers that crack it to work with other phones, like the netflix and hulu apps.
I am still waiting on information from the east coast rep on this as well. If I get anymore information I'll be sure to post it here.
Could you post some experiences with this unit? Do you think it's fast enough? How about the touchscreen; how well does it react to your finger and what about the sun.
There is a russian video on youtube giving a demo of this device.. not much to understand (at least for me) but at least you can see the features a little bit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGMxaMnfTFo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB9V641jTZQ
As you can see in the video, it's not as smooth as I hoped for.. sometimes you have to touch something two or three times before it works.

I have this unit as well and have had it since late May. It is actually pretty responsive(for a touchscreen head unit) and boots up fast. I am coming from a x930BT which was horrible in both of these areas. The having to press more than once is more related to how accurate you need to be to hit what the unit considers the button. It is small area that accepts the input for that button, hopefully they address this in a FW update.
As for the Sun question - pretty bad, but my car has a bad location for the radio that doesn't help the problem any. The sun beats directly on the screen and it is completely washed out.
Thanks tvrvic for the reply
Hmm the sun problem is not a good thing, a lot of units have problems with that and I hoped that a big company as Sony wouldn't have this problem.
I've had this unit for a few days so far and love it. I'm order the steering wheel control adapter today. It has a matte finish on the screen and that helps the glare, I can see the screen just fine.
.
Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.

Thanks, I also just saw this link: http://forums.mcx7.com/showthread.php/132693-Double-Din-Sony-XAV-601BT-Install-pics! with a photo of the unit in the sun and it looks good
Now we just need to root it
Hi Guys just asking for a bit of an update - im in the uk so the bigger 701hd isnt out yet, i was looking at the Alpine ICS x-8 which also supports mirror link - there is a demo out on youtube which shows it working with the Galaxy S2! Do you guys think this would work with the S3?

This head unit does not actually run Android, so there's nothing to root. It uses MirrorLink to mirror your phone's display on the head unit. You'll have to wait a few months for Clarion's double din Android head unit to release to have Android running natively on your head unit. There are some cheap no-name head units out there right now running Android, but they're poor quality and I don't think any of them are even running Gingerbread.
thanks for that info.
so the sony won't be hackable. given that, is mirrorlink's app approval mechanism hackable on the android end? does anyone know mirrorlink tech beyond:
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP™) is used for controlled access to applications. Virtual Network Computing (VNC™) is used to replicate the phone's display on the navigation screen and communicate user inputs back to the phone. Besides Bluetooth™, audio can also be streamed using the Real-Time Protocol (RTP).
MirrorLink™ also provides a mechanism that ensures only approved applications are accessible while driving.

I just installed this unit in my car - the Open source license page on the unit shows a lot of .apk files and also reference AOSP, and Linux 2.6.x licenses - so it is Linux
The mirror link support looks like it comes from tmlibs.so - which they published on their support site (Trying to find the links - I downloaded what they published for opensource -
the libraries they put on their site were: (Repeating tar.bz2 was their names)
EDIT: the url for the sony site is : http://www.sony.net/Products/Linux/Audio/XAV-701BT.html
GPL_SGX_KM_20111130.tar.bz2.tar.bz2.tar.bz2
alsa-lib.tar.gz
dnsmasq.tar.gz
iproute2.tar.gz
iptables.tar.gz
webkit.tar.gz
kernel.tar.gz
and the most interesting
ML_Necessitas_Build.tar.bz2.tar.bz2.tar.bz2
TmLibs.tar.bz2.tar.bz2.tar.bz2
The TmLibs looks like it has a mirrorlink server and client embeded, using the QT libraries in the ML_Necessitas, and there is an ortpLib directory in there as well.
Would it be possible they are running some android apks within the system as the USB music app seems very androidish (menus & icons) while the ipod app not so much?
http://www3.jvckenwood.com/english/car/mirrorlink/compatibility/kw-nsx1.html
Support for the Samsung GALAXY S III is planned. Car Mode compatibility will differ by country or region.
Support for Europe was going to be available on July 20 2012.
But, Support for Europe will be delayed to August 31 2012, because of software development has been delayed.
And timing for US/Canada is TBA. Support for Asia/Middle East is TBA.

So MirrorLink with the JVC will work at the end of August, so I guess that will also mean Sony will support it by that date.

New Joying Head Unit? Tweeted Dec 5 2015

I saw this tweet
https://twitter.com/carjoying/status/673061917242564608
I can't seem to find any additional info. I just bought the currently available one so I'm really interested to see if this new one is updated android and PX4 Rockchip.
Anyone know more?
I like the higher volume button. Out of the way.
I also just had an interaction with Joying where they indicated they will have an universal 10" single din model like their VW model ready in 2 weeks.
So from my reading of Joying's stereos, these are all basically the same, but with a differently designed front on them? I see the same Android version, processor and specs on every one, really. I'm asking because I'm curious about getting one and am a little overwhelmed with options that all seem about the same.
There are different cpu specs and resolutions. Some of the units are car specific due to some integrations like the VW units with can-bus showing heat and a/c info etc. If they have a unit that is specific for your can then it probably has a nice faceplate on it. Otherwise there are the universal units.
I consider to get one for my car, so I have to wait for new version
how are teh joying units, they got them on amazon which is abig plus if theres any issues
Cool! Thanks for sharing. Have an older model and it has been pretty solid so far. Might pick up a new one for the spare car Hopefully the Bluetooth quality is fixed with the updated unit.

The 2015 model is now on their website and amazon too for $330ish.... XDA won't let me post the link right now cuz I never post.....
There's also a forum about upgrading the unit to 5.1 with software provided by Joying... I may have to order one now...
The new ones are not out yet. A few days ago they let me know the 10.1" universal unit is coming in the next week or two.
Many units on their site say 2015.
Is 1gb fast enough for these units?
I have not had any issues with mine
Plenty responsive. Boots up quick too.
what about bluetooth and wifi quality? Are hardware mods still required with these unit?
I don't know about the newest model being released, but the Bluetooth quality with the model I have does have a hint of distortion. I use a hotspot on my phone without any signal problems, so can't speak to the signal strength with trying to connect to a wifi access point.
How are they selling a 10" model? What car would that ever fit in without huge customization of the entire dash panel?
Bought it

why are they releasing new models with still 4.4.4 and 1gb RAM?

I was thinking the same thing... Also, rk3188 is getting old. Most of the Android TV boxes have moved onto newer processors and Android.
Sent from my CarPad-II-P using XDA Free mobile app
Proven and more or less stable., abundant and inexpensive. Parts on hand. Also, when the new new board show up its not hard to simply swap them.
Sure, we want new and better every week. I'm happy to have this form factor now rather than waiting for 5.1.. Simple upgrade later.

This is not about wanting new every week...KitKat is 2 and half years old...Lollipop has been out for a year an a half....Lollipop should be the bare minimum when they ship devices these days, ....and 1gb RAM on any device in the year 2016 is just plain insulting.

Respectfully, I think you are being a little naive. Many of the manufacturers are working on the next full iteration of chips and 5.1 or 6 OS versions, but do you see many yet? It only takes a card swap on the head unit to change the SOC... and really the SOC and Android version has nothing to do with most of the hardware of these headunits. Take a look at the wide range of products a company like Joying offers. Pretty slick range of OEM looking faceplates and integrations with CAN bus etc. Truthfully, many of these companies are limited by what Rockchip and the subs provide for them.
You should definitely feel personally insulted. What were they thinking?! How could they develop a product without consulting devoidx?! :silly:

Android 8.1.......Anytime soon?

Hi all, I am in a position where I need a new headunit for a BMW. Just today found a parasitic draw coming from the NAV unit. Been thinking of getting an android radio for it anyway, now seems like the time. Up to this point I have been holding out waiting for android 8 to make its way to all the Chinese headunits. Anyone have any clue as to when that might happen? Obviously I do not want to jump in now and then see the new ones all pop up in 2 weeks, however if we all figure they are 2-3 months away then I may as well go for it.
So, anyone know anything? historically how long does it take to trickle down to the radios? any sort of common time frame from past releases?
Chinese somehow stuck on 4.4 so there won't be stable chinese radios with android 8 the next 2 years I think.
Sorry, am I missing something? they are all on 7.1 now and have been since early last year as far as I can tell.....
pumpkin has 7.1.2, but its px3
Xtrons te706pl shows shipping with android 8.0. I was wondering about being buggy though as it's so new. Even with that I was planning on ordering one.

New to Android heads

Hello. I am looking to install an in-dash head for my '07 Honda Civic. Since I'm semi-new to upgrading electronics I'm trying to do all the research I can before i start taking things apart. I see inexpensive Android heads on ebay, Amazon, and others and am trying to look for things to get the most bang from my buck. I did a lot of research when looking for an Android media player and ended up making a comparison chart for others. Does anyone have any similar tips on what the lower end units can and can't do? I'm noticing a lot of the units don't have GPS, or it may say "GPS" but it's only enabled by the screen sharing from the user's phone. I'm looking up model numbers as well such as the RK-7156G, MP1369, 7018B, EWM 8802, and others. I'm concluding that the higher the number, the newer the Android version and features?
I'm looking to spend around $100 USD. From my experience with purchasing a few android media players I've learned the hard way to go with a unit that has at least 2 GB of RAM, but based on the usage of the head could I get by with 1 GB of RAM? What other things should I look for or be wary of? Thank you.

E39, PCD7739B, Xtrons, Root, Update, Chinese Headunit, Android

Good evening gents,
I hate being that guy on a new forum with one post asking for his hand to be held, but this is my first Android/Chinesium headunit and I'm unsure what to expect.
So I've bought a Xtrons PCD7739B that has been refurbished on eBay. Was over half the price, but has come fully packaged in a sealed bag with the screen protector still on it, so it seems basically brand new.
First impressions are good. I can't plug my S7 Edge in and use the head unit to access files on it - the phone complains that there's something wrong. Bluetooth works good and I can use screen mirroring.
I'll finish rigging it up at the weekend, but at this stage I'm trying to understand what I can do with it. The operating system that's on it does work fine, it just seems a bit "Chinese".
I'm trying to find in lay-man's terms why rooting would be good, if I can root it or what other apps/things could I do to improve it. Functionality, it seems to be good and from what I've read - it's like rooting means you can sometimes lose some functionality due to software bugs.
I've checked out the System section and there's:
Android Version: 7.1.1
MCU Version: T5.3.19-36-10-E53201-171204
System Version: V8.3.2_20180716.143957_MLT4-DVD
DVD Version: 2.13.15-860mc-150417
I've searched for T5.3.19 and I'm not finding much, so I'd rather not just do my usual and go ram-stamming in and understand what I'm doing, why, and if it's the right thing.
So TL;DR:
I have a PCD7739B
The OS is fine but could be nicer
Is rooting necessary?
Are there other apps that would make it better?
What rooting options are there/does anyone have links to ROMs?
I appreciate any help you guys can offer.
Cheers,
Adam.
So I emailed Xtrons on the same night I posted this and they got back to me saying that they haven't updated the firmware for this model in quite some time and that it is not suitable for rooting.
Not sure how much I believe of the second part but meh.
