Android 8.1.......Anytime soon? - Android Head-Units

Hi all, I am in a position where I need a new headunit for a BMW. Just today found a parasitic draw coming from the NAV unit. Been thinking of getting an android radio for it anyway, now seems like the time. Up to this point I have been holding out waiting for android 8 to make its way to all the Chinese headunits. Anyone have any clue as to when that might happen? Obviously I do not want to jump in now and then see the new ones all pop up in 2 weeks, however if we all figure they are 2-3 months away then I may as well go for it.
So, anyone know anything? historically how long does it take to trickle down to the radios? any sort of common time frame from past releases?

Chinese somehow stuck on 4.4 so there won't be stable chinese radios with android 8 the next 2 years I think.

Sorry, am I missing something? they are all on 7.1 now and have been since early last year as far as I can tell.....

pumpkin has 7.1.2, but its px3

Xtrons te706pl shows shipping with android 8.0. I was wondering about being buggy though as it's so new. Even with that I was planning on ordering one.

New Joying Head Unit? Tweeted Dec 5 2015

I saw this tweet
https://twitter.com/carjoying/status/673061917242564608
I can't seem to find any additional info. I just bought the currently available one so I'm really interested to see if this new one is updated android and PX4 Rockchip.
Anyone know more?
I like the higher volume button. Out of the way.
I also just had an interaction with Joying where they indicated they will have an universal 10" single din model like their VW model ready in 2 weeks.
So from my reading of Joying's stereos, these are all basically the same, but with a differently designed front on them? I see the same Android version, processor and specs on every one, really. I'm asking because I'm curious about getting one and am a little overwhelmed with options that all seem about the same.
There are different cpu specs and resolutions. Some of the units are car specific due to some integrations like the VW units with can-bus showing heat and a/c info etc. If they have a unit that is specific for your can then it probably has a nice faceplate on it. Otherwise there are the universal units.
I consider to get one for my car, so I have to wait for new version
how are teh joying units, they got them on amazon which is abig plus if theres any issues
Cool! Thanks for sharing. Have an older model and it has been pretty solid so far. Might pick up a new one for the spare car Hopefully the Bluetooth quality is fixed with the updated unit.

The 2015 model is now on their website and amazon too for $330ish.... XDA won't let me post the link right now cuz I never post.....
There's also a forum about upgrading the unit to 5.1 with software provided by Joying... I may have to order one now...
The new ones are not out yet. A few days ago they let me know the 10.1" universal unit is coming in the next week or two.
Many units on their site say 2015.
Is 1gb fast enough for these units?
I have not had any issues with mine
Plenty responsive. Boots up quick too.
what about bluetooth and wifi quality? Are hardware mods still required with these unit?
I don't know about the newest model being released, but the Bluetooth quality with the model I have does have a hint of distortion. I use a hotspot on my phone without any signal problems, so can't speak to the signal strength with trying to connect to a wifi access point.
How are they selling a 10" model? What car would that ever fit in without huge customization of the entire dash panel?
Bought it

why are they releasing new models with still 4.4.4 and 1gb RAM?

I was thinking the same thing... Also, rk3188 is getting old. Most of the Android TV boxes have moved onto newer processors and Android.

Proven and more or less stable., abundant and inexpensive. Parts on hand. Also, when the new new board show up its not hard to simply swap them.
Sure, we want new and better every week. I'm happy to have this form factor now rather than waiting for 5.1.. Simple upgrade later.

This is not about wanting new every week...KitKat is 2 and half years old...Lollipop has been out for a year an a half....Lollipop should be the bare minimum when they ship devices these days, ....and 1gb RAM on any device in the year 2016 is just plain insulting.

Respectfully, I think you are being a little naive. Many of the manufacturers are working on the next full iteration of chips and 5.1 or 6 OS versions, but do you see many yet? It only takes a card swap on the head unit to change the SOC... and really the SOC and Android version has nothing to do with most of the hardware of these headunits. Take a look at the wide range of products a company like Joying offers. Pretty slick range of OEM looking faceplates and integrations with CAN bus etc. Truthfully, many of these companies are limited by what Rockchip and the subs provide for them.
You should definitely feel personally insulted. What were they thinking?! How could they develop a product without consulting devoidx?! :silly:

Looking for a head unit. What do you recommend?

I am toying with the idea of getting one of these android based head units. I give up waiting for the big boys to catch up and frankly I love to tinker.
I've read a little bit but the two units i see most info about ate Joying, indash and Pumpkin.
I am looking at the latest ones posted 5.1.1 7 inch. They will be going in a 2007
Silverado (no bose) and a 08 ford escape.
I see some Roms out there so what is the best unit to get that people are developing with. By best i mean good hardware, decent support, best lcd for daytime viewing, established vendor....
I am green meaning haven't messed with android chinese stuff in a while so need a little direction.

In another month or two InDash will have a unit specific to your Silverado. At least that's what they told me when I asked for my Yukon (same faceplate.) By that time I would expect a lot of their OctaCore bugs to be fixed.
I haven't seen much activity on the indash blog they have... Joying seems to have the most info - at least on their forum. I starting to lean more towards joying.. OR breaking the bank for the new Kenwood.

Difference between those 3 android 8.0 head units

I've decided to buy a double din universal 7" android 8.0 head unit. After 3 days of researching i came across those 3 as the best.
I'd like to know which one do you guys recommend.
Thanks a lot.
Xtrons TE706PL
EONON GA2170
Auto Pumpkin
im also interested..
even though i like hard Buttons and vol knob more than sw Buttons, i would go with the xtrons
If you look on the backsind of the Units, xtrons has defenetly the best buildt quality.
Inside they are pretty much the same
Interesting to know what Kind of amp chip and Radio chip is used.
Thats my oppinion
Differences? Probably none.
But beware, not one of them runs Android 8. They just change a few strings to make it look like they do for marketing purposes.

Usually somewhere between 5.1 and 6.0.
The user interface they present is a dead giveaway.
The interface that Android 8 presents should look very similar to Android Auto.

Got a notice that would have it in 5-7 days from today. Honestly, my expectations aren't super high for the "all be" here (for $300), if Spotify and Waze work that will be 90% of my use of it right there and anything else is gravy.
I ordered a $1,200 android unit that is manufactured in the USA and was bummed when on installation the unit display was dead and it had to go back for a refund, so I ended up with a $1,200 Alpine setup with Android Auto. I like it, but wouldnt mind playing with an Android unit.
The major downside I know that is coming is the need to turn on my hot spot every time I get in the truck - this will be annoying.

I haven't heard of any android ivi's being made in USA. Care to share who they are?
I actually gave up completely on getting anything decent in a "ready to go" form.
Went this route instead; https://github.com/HiKey960-Car
And somebody pointed out this really neat 10" display that would be really nice with it:

Uh, THAT is an ENORMOUS markup on an MTCD PX5. Look at the UI and the specifications.
Looks like not only audio, but prices are insane as well. Are we insane enough to go for it? .

That looks just like the eBay ones .. doubt it's made in the USA...
These days many US made products are built from parts from China, so maybe they get their head units from there and then modify/customize them here in the USA. From an economics perspective, it would make sense since getting all the parts to build them entirely here is likely not possible. I did speak to them and they have a US based operation. I also believe they are doing the OS work for their units.

If they were doing OS work, it wouldn't have the same old really crappy chinese UI.
I'm sure that they're US based, but they're a US based "logo" and reselling company. They order the "out of the box" MTCD units with a custom logo printed on it and call it good.

Nfc stickers(what I'm using) or use Tasker with root.
Brand EONON, Suck do not purchase this brand, I purchase 3 touch screen stereo the most expensive in-dash they have, 6 yrs. ago they suck, the eonon almost burn my wires on my mk5 VW, 3 yrs ago, so 3 yrs later should be enough time for EONON to fix all the bugs so I order ga5153a for my Mk5, fck drove my car windows crazy,
now I have mk6 2010 Golf GTI, Bought Ga7185A, this one drove both my windows, locking system and alarm crazy, and BTW all of eonon stereos, when going into EQ settings and want to hear the back speaker only, would not work, all speakers wires in the eonon stereos, are connected to only left and right no back speakers. this Chinese don't care if you burn your car or not, you can't sue them since their in the 3rd country.

latest and greatest 10.1?

Was curious if anyone was still looking at 10.1's? I have been kicking them around for a year and some change, I keep getting caught up in the stats. I see they come out with a new O/S but then have the old chipset or vice versa. What I like that I see is 8.0 O/S Octacore with 4gb but can't seem to find a brand to do it all together in a 10.1 but have it in the regular double din. The three brands I had been kicking around is Pumpkin, Joying, and started to think about Phoenix since I talked to them at SEMA but have since dropped the ball on emails about custom options. I started looking at their Telsa screen setup and was hoping to get something where I could input my car into the home screen but they didn't respond to my email.
Anyways, I would really appreciate some input because once I get a few other things on the car finished up I want to start into the stereo system. Thanks in advance, I tried adding to another thread without a response.
Slight update, finally found one that says it should have that in the main heading. But when you go into item description it shows the old info, wondering if it is just a copy paste error?

I recently got the xtrons TE103AP
works pretty good: 4g ram px5 Oreo...
Figured I would bump this again since I am still trying to work all this out. I have now thought about doing 2 10.1 screens in my car, they have now bumped up the ROM to 64 with Android 8.1 but it does not have the fast boot. They say I can do the 32gb version with Android 8.0 but kinda annoys me that it is the same price. I am thinking they will be coming out with new models soon since they are now running a 10% special on their website. I would really appreciate some advice because I keep going back and forth. I did look into the Xtron but really don't like the button setup on it and it is now lacking in stats. Thanks in advance for any input
For reference these are the two units
no fast boot

PX5 4G ram with Android 10, someone already tested them?

Hello,
I saw that in Chinese online markets are available car auto heads with Android 10.
The hardware specs are the usual (cpu PX5, 4 gb ram etc), is safe to buy them or we should wait or choose an android 9 radio in order to have stability?
Any way to root them in near future?
I searched online but there are no reviews in youtube for these android 10 units.
Thank you!!
Axl

Once installed in the new car, I would like to keep it for the next 10 years approximately.
I guess that Android 8 will be prehistory in 2030
Before to buy an Android 10 unit, I will wait for the first reviews and (fingers cross!) first root/mod experiments here in xda.

i bet you won't keep the whole car for 10 years, forget the android unit
we will have android automotive by then, hope more OEMs jump on that bandwagon. For now only Volvo will use it this year on the XC40 electric / Polestar 2. Later on, Audi and Fiat/Chrysler will join.

I Purchased the same radio from xtrons but the only issue I'm having so far is trying to hide the system status bar been trying to find a fix but most of them require root which the head unit is not or adb and I have no clue on how to adb into this head unit.
