Adaptive change of screen contrast - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

After march update I encountered what appears to be an adaptive change in the screen contrast. In fact, when exposed to hard light blacks switch to grey, reducing the screen contrast.
Is it something normal? Is it possible to prevent it?
Thank you in advance

I have the same issue and it is very annoying. Any solutions yet?

Same, got it with March update.

It is there since Nougat, it is not new.

Try a custom ROM like pixel experience. Adaptive contrast there is not that drastic

[Q] N7 Screen issue-too much contrast

Hello. I've been around for a few years using N7 ROMS/Kernals as well as Galaxy nexus and now GS3 Clean ROM. My question is regarding the screen contrast. Seems latel my screen has gotten worse with the background contrast. Blacks are gray and everything is so saturated in colors, my home screen is so bright even at 15% brightness. I have tried the screen tester app from play and the white saturation test blinds me out of the water, same for contrast. I can adjust it down but its only good for that session, doesn't hold. I've tried multiple ROMS and Kernals and nothing is killing this over saturation of contrast. Is there anything out there that can reduce this? Its pretty annoying. Everything is so washed out.
Thanks!

[MotoX] [2014] Purple Display at Low Brightness [Lollipop] [Amoled]

Okay so I bought a new Moto X (2014) last week In India. Everything about the phone is great. It was already on lollipop. But when I decrease the brightness to below 30-40% the display gradually becomes more and more purple. And with Adaptive Brightness on and in a dark room, it's so purple that the green and yellow shades appear grey or black. I know amoled panels have this problem at very low brightness and apparently many Nexys 6 users are also facing it. However I didn't see many complaints here in the Moto X forum.
So if you have this problem please vote in the poll above. Then I can ask them for a replacement. Thank you.
I'd later add some photos of the screen.
P.S. If you are experiencing this, please add some photos so that people can compare it with their displays.
ok i have this problem too, but when I'm in the bed and reading random news this purple display isn't disturbing me. i can feel it relax more my eyes. so i can say i take advantage from a bug
I don't think this is a bug, way easier on the eyes in the dark, perhaps some kind of a feature on AMOLED and Lollipop. The Nexus 6 has it, too, i think.
I don't know if anyone else noticed that in direct sun light, the screen goes extra bright - like indoor bright + boost?
This is not a feature. It's an issue with amoled displays. That's why Samsung limits the lowest brightness to a higher level. While Moto X seems to go way down. I just want to know if everyone's having this. Then it's okay. But if it's not everyone then there're some good amoled panels out there and we are getting the bad ones.
Yup, keep noticing this before the screen goes completely off.
It's not a "bug" with AMOLED displays, it's inherent to the way the displays work. Red LEDs use much less power than other colors so when the brightness is down low the displays looks like it has a slightly red tint to it. While Samsung does keep their best displays for themselves the lack of a red tint is not due to that but is instead due to not letting the brightness go as low on their displays.

That's what I meant. Not quite the best choice of word, I guess. But if that was the case, everyone should have had the pink tint at low brightness. Do you mean the ones who are not getting it are either lying or have Moto X's with LCD panels?

Well, only 2 out of 11 people have reported no color distortion. And remember that while you're asking "Is there a purple tint?" they're answering the question "Have you noticed a purple tint?"
What I've noticed is that when Adaptive Brightness is on, the display gets super dark and causes the purple tint. When I turn Adaptive Brightness off in a dark room, it actually completely loses the purple tint, and compared to my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 at lowest brightness, the screen is brighter than the Tab S. So I guess Motorola hasn't caught up with Samsung's display technology since my Tab S can actually get dimmer without such a dramatic color distortion - for my Moto X to get to a brightness level that dim, I need to turn on Adaptive Brightness (thus with the purple tint).
.
I wouldn't say it gets a Purple tint but rather a reddish one with adaptive light.
And I LOVE it. This way I don't have to install Lumen.CF or any other stuff. Way easier on the eyes at night and it gets reeeeeeaally dark. Just perfect!
I also love that it naturally has a lower white temperature point than other lcd/phones screens. Warmer white is cozy white.
7 votes for without purple/red tint.
People who are not seeing the tint, can you please upload a side by side photo of "your phone at lowest brightness with the adjustment bar visible" and "a white paper".

I voted for no color distortion as my display is very very good. I can tell you there is certainly a variation in displays. A few months back someone posted about being able to see color banding and such. Those of us with really good displays do not see that. I was going to order a Pure edition to replace my unlocked XT1097 but the display is so good on it I decided not to, I doubt another one will be as good. I had 5 different Moto X 2013 models and the displays varied on each of them as well. I kept the best one and my 2014 model is still quite a bit better then the best 2013 I had.

The rest of the phone in my case feels pretty solid and well built. Also I'm getting 47k+ scores on Antutu. Hence I am having second thoughts about getting it replaced.
My PE doesn't turn purple and has better whites than my AT&T branded one. The screen on that one is awful to me but I also use a G2, iPhone 6, '13 N7, no one notices but me.
Sent from my XT1095 Victara
After three replacements, I finally got a decent one.
I'm pretty sure this is just a feature of the moto x2 go to Settings/Display and turn off adaptive brightness, you will see that it changes to normal

Indeed, when adaptative brightness is turned off, purple tint will not occur. However, I am not sure this is a "feature". It actually looks more like a poor implementation of auto brightness.

I use the CF Lumen app to turn down the red and green just a tad in the master mode. That makes my screen less pinkish.
I had the purple display issue in 5.0. Now I upgraded to 5.1 and the issue is gone. Colors are well balanced down to minimum available brightness.

Anyone else noticing the display "dulling" over time?

i am so thrilled to be back to android after a 2 year hiatus... my experience over the last few weeks with the 6p (64GB aluminum) has been amazing.. there are a few glitches in the 6.0 system such as bluetooth switching with sound, and a bit of choppy scrolling now and then, but those are minor and i know that marshmallow is brand new and those will get fixed with updates.. my only serious concern at the moment is the display/screen dulling in luster after a day or 2..
i will reboot, and have a crisp, clear, awesome display on the phone for about a day... then after that the display seems to dull and lose the crispness.. colors are muted, and dont shine bright, sort of washed out - whites and blacks get greyer..icon colors getted muted....dulling is the best adjective i can muster to describe it.. if i manually reboot, it comes back to perfect again, but only for a period of 8 hours or so...
i have adaptive and ambien set to off.. RGB in developer options is off.. i have display set at about 40% static.. and if i increase brightness manually, it makes the screen brighter but the washed out colors remain..
anyone else experiencing this? is this something i should be concerned about and inquire about an RMA for a new unit?
seems ok after I turned off sRGB

Screen brighter after Nougat update

Does anyone else find that the screen is brighter after the update to Nougat? I only notice because my eyes seem to be unusually sensitive to an overly bright screen. I've been having eye strain issues ever since the update. I just clued in to the fact that the brightness scale may be different with the update, so I turned the brightness down a titch. I'm hoping that the adjustment will help things.

Display issues

Hello guys, suddenly I'm having display issues on my k20. I've attached a link to the video, when i pull down the notification bar, look how the blacks are loading a bit late. When i turn off dark mode, i see no issues like this, it's just the beautiful display again. Even i had same issues with my dark wallpaper. Please check, if you've same issues. I'm really concerned about it. Also, this maybe screen flickering but when i increased brightness, the issue didn't disappear, it was still persistent but at lower levels.

That's normal behavior for amoled displays.
1st: If this is the display problem, how can you expect we can see this on a screen capture??
2nd (probably because of the 1st): I can't see anything wrong.
3rd: I have no display issues at all.

Can't you see that voilet-ish colour instead of black when I'm swiftly moving the notification bar? It's clearly visible in video, you might want to check again.
Nope, watched it at least 5 times, on my PC and my 9T. Can't see anything peculiar.
I can not see anything wrong or violet at all. Am playing this on my computer at 1080 resolution and 0.25 playback speed and there is nothing to see.
If your screen is faulty, we are not able to see it on video you have shared with us of course
DAMN IT! Even i see nothing from my laptop
I think I'm having screen issues, only when its dark mode, else the screen is working absolutely fine!
I need to get to the service center ASAP! :crying:
Edit: Guys can you try doing the same and look if the issue is persistent in your screen too?! It would really be helpful for me.

It's normal for OLED panels, some are better, some worse. My phone has it too. No need to go to the service center.
I too have it brother. Dark mode has it normal mode doesn't. It can also be noticed if you open youtube and scroll back and forth quickly. The blacks seem to be spilling or streching. I saw that on your video and I don't know if it is normal or not but i too have that and wanted to ask someone about that.

People are claiming this to be normal, but after searching a lot i got to know these kind of issues come after 1-2years, not in a week or month. So I'm trying my best to replace my device or get the screen changed. I don't understand why Xiaomi is keeping the colours to pure blacks when they know their displays are facing smearing issues. I hope someone just changes that pure black colour to very dark grey colour, system widely. Some developer tested(on OP7 pro) the battery consumption difference with pure black and dark grey and it turned out that, dark grey consumes only 0.067% more power than dark inky blacks. I'm humbly requesting developers to change the colour, or at least have an option for the same.
My display when there is low light, the brightness is set to low and the image I see on the display is darkish I can see a vertical line at the left side of the display, is this normal or should I return It?
It's normal for Amoled screens (from first day of use). Just search for Amoled black smearing and you'll find a lot of videos and articles. S10 has it, iPhones have it too.

I have faint vertical lines on the right of the display when the brightness is low which is how I normally use it. I also have black smearing on pitch black to dark color transition. I think thats normal, it doesn't really bother me all that much.
The best way to reproduce this issue is turn off brightness to minimum and turn on reading mode to max. Then you'll see delay of displaying some colors (mostly gray)

My k20 has this issue and it's annoying that after paying for a flagship killer, we just got a cheap display which is not just low in quality but has these issue in dark mode which i think most of us use. Interestingly when i record this from screen recorder,it doesn't show up much but the same can be seen visually. So, this is definitely an issue that redmi is trying to let go.

As you "record from screen recorder" you do not record from the screen as you may like to think. You capture the video signal BEFORE it gets to the screen. So any imperfections caused by the amoled screen do not show up on a screen capture.
Anyway, this is a normal weakness with all amoled screens that I have seen.
It is soooo annoying when in dark mode at low brightness, I feel like I couldn't stand it anymore. The worst experience of display usage ever.
Maybe with DC dimming update that might happen someday, the issue won't be as intrusive and pronounce as it is right now. But whenn???
UPDATE:
So I found a workaround for this issue with an app. It's called Screen Balance. Basically it adds a filter overlay on your screen (ineffective on notification panel, because android restriction). Set it to either flourescent or flourescent (warm) at 15% strength minimum, and both brightness and contrast at 100%. You won't see perfect black anymore, but very close to that and no smearing effects visible unless you're really trying to.
I've bought Mi 9T Pro and have the same issue (also see it in your video). Did you fixed that?
