Hello. I've been around for a few years using N7 ROMS/Kernals as well as Galaxy nexus and now GS3 Clean ROM. My question is regarding the screen contrast. Seems latel my screen has gotten worse with the background contrast. Blacks are gray and everything is so saturated in colors, my home screen is so bright even at 15% brightness. I have tried the screen tester app from play and the white saturation test blinds me out of the water, same for contrast. I can adjust it down but its only good for that session, doesn't hold. I've tried multiple ROMS and Kernals and nothing is killing this over saturation of contrast. Is there anything out there that can reduce this? Its pretty annoying. Everything is so washed out.
Thanks!

Okay, so, one of the things that's really disappointed me with some recent Android tablets I've tried out has been the screen's color temperature and contrast:
1. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" and Toshiba Excite 10 all had very cold screens, with very blue-ish whites. Also, contrast was poor on both, so reading ebook on them with black text on a "white" background was unpleasant.
2. On some Primes I tried, whites were a dingy yellowish color (although I'm not sure that's because of the temp or some other issue), while some were a nice neutral-to-warm color.
3. The Toshiba Excite 7.7 screen varies depending on how much black/dark colors are being shown, clearly a power-saving feature. On screens with a lot of whites, the temp is made much coolor and contrast is reduced. On screens with a lot of darker colors, temp is warmer, contrast is increased, and whites are much less blue.
So, what I'm wondering about the Nexus 7 is this: what's the apparent color temp? Are whites "white," or are they yellow-ish (warmer) or blue-ish (colder)? And how's contrast, specifically black text on white?
I know I'll get the darn thing in a few weeks, but in the meantime I'm not finding any reviews that say anything other than "great screen for the money." And unless someone's being really careful, it's tough to show screen colors and temperature in pics and video...
Why colors are not vivid in this screen they look a little wached out
What u guys think?
They don't appear as oversaturated as the ipad 3/4 or OLED screens but it looks so bright that it makes up for it. I know the actual nit ratings are not the highest but this thing looks BRIGHT on the auto setting.
With the brightness all the way up it seems washed out. Just turn the brightness down. It's overkill for the most part, and seriously cuts down the battery life. Compared to my galaxy nexus, the blacks aren't nearly as good, but I'd say the color is more natural. Cheers.
When more kernels are released i'm sure there will be color controls. I'm personally waiting for franco kernel. He just posted on his google+ inquirying about releasing a test version of his kernel. should not be too long until we have the ability to change gamma and color density patience!

Thats cause this uses an actual LCD screen, unlike the Galaxy nexus. Honestly the blacks are one of the only decent things about the GNex screen. Custom kernels had to fix some major color issues with most people's devices. And as the person above me said, we will soon have kernels for this device too that allow color, contrast, and gamma options so anyone who is unsatisfied with colors at default can tweak their settings around.

I second this. Stock colors on the gnex make it look like a cigar stain. Think I stole that line from somewhere. Anyway they are bad. I've tweaked the colors on my gnex and now the diff between the two devices is less. I personally like oled, but the n10 screen IMHO is far more color accurate which may at times make it seem washed out.
Its kind of like too much bass. An untrained ear might say too much bass sounds better then a flat curve.

The colours are fine.. Its the colours on your oled screens that are overly saturated
I have to agree with the OP. Blacks are really bad. Also is everyone else screen on the warmer side (slightly yellow)?

The screen produces a very poor rendition of the NTSC colour gamut. I have professionally calibrated equipment at home to compare. Gray scale is good. Gamma is OK. Color accuracy is poor. Very antique looking. This is similar to how Panasonic used to calibrate their displays. The contrast is average. Overall the screen is simply mediocre with minimal glaring issues. This screen isn't for showing off; its for getting work done. Bright, sharp, and bland looking. Hopefully a dev unlocks some mdnie hacks that offer control over the displays calibration. A couple tweaks could definitely improve the perceived contrast and improve color accuracy. I've had a number of nexus devices over the years. They're very no frills. So I don't think we'll see many tools for improving the screen. Maybe some wonky color gamma tweaks.
Supercurio I'm calling you out for some assistance.

BTW I have a galaxy nexus with an amoled display. With some adjustments its a superb screen. The gamma is too high and colours are over saturated, however the colour rendition is far more accurate than the nexus 10. The blues and reds on the nexus 10 are way off the mark. Blues are more cyan, they are washed out, not deep enough. The reds are very under saturated. The greens are muddy, slightly brown. Yellows are over saturated and magenta is slightly under saturated. The display just doesn't compare to the new iPad in the slightest. Oddly enough, sharpness is the least important display characteristic for a quality display. Humans are much more sensitive to contrast and colour. The nexus 10 display has its priorities mixed up. On the other hand, I still love this thing and wouldn't trade it for any other tablet on the market. Its graphics performance is beastly and just outclasses most other tablets in regards to build quality.

There's an app called Screen Adjuster to adjust rgb and contrast. Root required. I wonder if that may help. I'm not rooted so I can't really try it. And I may end up returning it so didn't wanna muck with it for now.

Calling the ipad 4 oversaturated is just ignorant.
Not sure if its placebo but I updated to 4.2.1 and my build # is JOP40D and the screen isnt as dull anymore. Blacks are darker although still not as dark as my tf700. Anyone else notice this after the update?

Is there any kernel available for nexus 7 to increase color saturation of the screen? Although my N7 screen looks fine, I am used to Amoled from my phone, so it would be great if I can increase the saturation. It would look awesome with games.
I tried this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netmanslab.sa
but doesn't help at all. No option to make it more saturated, but only less saturated.
Thanks!

Hm..I don't think that app is the one i need..
I don't feel that the screen is washed out or anything like that in general. BUT what I really want is by rooting it and maybe increase the saturation so that it's more comparable to my AMOLED screen on my phone. I know there is an app for Nexus 4 that does exactly this, but I asked the dev if it would work on other devices as well, and he didn't reply at all. This was quite awhile ago actually..
BTW I haven't rooted my N7 yet and the only reason I may root is to increase color saturation.
Maybe someone else has more idea?
Isn't the opposite of washed out colors is saturated colors? Or am I just not understanding what you're wanting?
This should help with color saturation because washed out colors = desaturation. It's the only app I've seen.

I re-read my comment, it seems fine..what didn't u understand? um..you know that AMOLED (the one on my phone) is extremely saturated display right? so I'm used to the display, but N7 display isn't too bad (not very washed out in GENERAL, as IPS is usually like this), but compared to AMOLED it IS washed out. Most people would be fine with this IPS display on N7, and I'm okay too actually, but it would be awesome if I can increase the color saturation to make it more saturated, closer to AMOLED.
Hope you understand my question..
so it's not the Prism I'm talking about. I want to increase the saturation entirely. Prism I heard only makes the screen washed out for like 30 seconds while watching movies or something. I don't really have any problem with this btw..
Thanks.
The problem is that it stays on. It helps with color saturation and contrast, it's the only thing I've seen. You can try messing with the colors in CM and such but I doubt you are going to get anywhere.
I have a sprint edition note4, when I'm in the sun and auto brightness is on, it looks like the contrast on my screen gets cranked up drastically, distorting any colors on my screen. Anyone else gettin this?
Yea, I would assume that this is a feature that allows the screen to be more visible is direct sunlight.
I think it helps.
I think it might be a defect, it only happens some times. I would love to hear from other people tho.
It could be the screen mode. Under display settings > screen mode > try basic instead of adaptive
Interesting, the colors seem more washed out on basic.
Basic is meant for artists that needed accurate color reproduction. The next two increase color saturation and contrast, and adaptive is meant to be used in full submit bright days. Ththe color suffers, but you can see the screen much better.
Mine does it to, I think it is a feature. It goes back to normal when out of extreme light

It is known feature. It raises brightnes almost twice of nominal in direct sunlight when auto brightnes is checked.

Feature and will also happen on any screen mode when auto brightness is enabled.

How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the Nokia 7 Plus's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Hello. I would like to ask about the deep blacks on low brightness in an environment without a light. I read before sleep, and I set my nexus 6p amoled to black with white text. Knowing that LCD cannot block all the light for blacks, I want to know how strong the gray shade is. I searched for an image taken from the display during night with no luck. Though considering the variable exposure of photos I guess it is useless to see that. Unfortunately the same can be said about human perception, but anyway I really appreciate any thought on the matter.
So couple of days later and I have the phone. I will post my opinion on the screen here for anyone wondering.
First about the thread topic: The blacks do look grayish in a very dark environment, so compared to an amoled the backlight is visible, however, if the brightness is brought all the way down to minimum, it is bearable.
According to this statistics the Nokia 7 plus screen gets a top score in contrast among LCDs. According to Nokia their screens have an additional polarizing layer which filters more backlight for darks. I confirm that even with an ambient light the grayish tone of blacks is not visible.
Now before discussing the cons of the screen, I have to say that I consider it a good screen. The contrast is good, colors pop out (not as much as amoleds), the sunlight reading is good (not excellent, 3.5 out of 5, amoleds capped at 3), and I enjoy watching movies, peculiarly even more than my nexus 7 amoled, I think it has to do with that faint grayish blacks! Since if I increase the amoled brightness the contrast will increase to an unnatural level for movies (just my opinion).
Now the shortcoming is the absence of white balance adjustment, on software side. This absence is problematic in this case because it is a very cold screen, which means the colors are a little toward blue tones. On the same website if you look at the "Color Temperature" you see it scores 8105, compared to 6863 of Pixel 2. How important this is? It is personal preference! I found turning on the night mode with a very light intensity fixes the problem; Yet we need more color control like in Oxygen OS from Oneplus. Will be happy to see it included in pure android since the needed filters exist as core android libraries.
