Magisk manager and Bootloader - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello everyone. I want to know, if I unlock my bootloader with TWRP then root with Magisk manager, then do I lose my next Official OTG update? I'm using Stock Samsung Galaxy S8 Oreo. TIA.

Yep. Your Knox get busted and you won't be able to get another official OTA update..
You can still upgrade though, by flashing it using Odin, but I wouldn't recommend using that every time since it wipes your data.

I heard that Magick is not same as SuperSU. It won't make any change in system and partition. It is systemless root process so if I unlock just my bootloader and root with Magick why I won't be able to get another official OTA update!

The Knox system got busted not because of magisk, but because you're unlocking your bootloader and installing TWRP.
Yes, magisk does offer systemless root, and it ables you to pass safetynet check that is needed to turn on features like Android pay and some bank apps.. But, Samsung pay, and several Samsung apps that relies on Knox is busted once the Knox is tripped.

CF-autoroot or flash TWRP then in TWRP flash SuperSU
Kingroot and SuperSU_me method works also... Watch the entire process in 2 parts... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWnYFDQ1Vio

Have you lost root since? I've read a lot about people loosing root after a few hours to a couple of days. Any other issues, like random crashes / freezes / reboots?

That's why flashing TWRP and SuperSU is the safest/easiest way to root, it's about as straightforward as it gets

Wasn't aware I could flash a custom recovery on a stock unrooted phone. I don't use the s4, that's why both of the ones I own aren't rooted already, my personal phones are often rooted before I even get home from the store! I need root and su without tripping knox or making any significant changes to the current set-up on either phone. I would prefer the recovery was stock on at least one of 'em. So how should I go about this? One is a tri band and the other isn't. The dual band one needs to be as stealth as possible. Losing root really won't matter as long as the system permissions remain as is prior to losing root.

Flashing a custom recovery is going to trip knox. Why do you care about knox? Triband or not flashing TWRP and SuperSU is the same. If you lose root and have things that require root to operate, you will lose the function of those things, unless it's a one off type of thing

It's imperative that root is stealth. Just need to give one app already running su permissions. On one device knox is monitored, that's why I care. I wouldn't care on my s5, but I never tripped it anyway - rooted with modified stock recovery, flashed MOAR, flashed TWRP. Been using MAOR and TWRP since each was first released. Been rooted on my personal devices since 3 days after the Hero was released. I've just never rooted the s4 or "stealth rooted" any device. That's why Kingroot / SSM looks promising. Any help would be appreciated.

Doing a system-less root on s4 using magisk possible?

alright im thinking of doing system-less root with xposed using magisk (yes im a pokemon goer thats ticked off from its new update) just wanting to know what would be the best way to go about this. If it is possible. currently im running GoldenEYE rom android 5.0.1 dont have fastboot so i already know i have alot of work in Odin to do. would love to have CM12.1 running with a systemless root but last time i tried to even get CM12.1 loaded it never worked.
So anyidea if this is possible or not. (yes i do have stock roms at the ready from when i put on my current rom along with root methods)
You don't have to do anything in Odin.
All you need is TWRP.
Then follow the Magisk instructions.
Unroot, uninstall Xposed (if present), flash Magisk zip, flash phh root zip, download phh superuser app and Magisk manager app.
well that sucked. now have the dreaded unauthorized soft ware. found a way around it to get phone booted. going into download mode then cancel out restarting phone from there.
So I tried this exact thing two days ago because I have an S4 with the Goldeneye rom installed, and unfortunately got these results
I opened up superSU and did a full unroot, after
I deleted the xposed that was installed (v86 by dlc) using the uninstaller through TWRP.
Next I flashed magisk v6 zip along with the phh superuser zip, and ended up in a bootloop..
The phone wouldnt pass the boot animation, so i uninstalled magisk, and reflashed superSU
On my end its not working, mate.

As far as I know, systemless stuff works only on Android 6 and above.
Goldeneye is a TouchWiz ROM, therefor it's android 5.
Magisk works on Touchwiz 5.0
Magisk works on android 5.0 touchwiz. Im using lenny bard stock HPG1 rom and PoGo works perfectly
Sure you can do it. i have gt-i9500 variant with 5.1.1 port tw android. magisk work when i want to play pokemon go. the only problem i have now is the systemless xposed not working as expected.
I am under the impression I am not able to get TWRP on mine because its the later version with locked bootloader.. what options are there.. Currently Download Graded to 4.4.4 to use towel root and installed Flashfire so i can install Safestrap
Really want to use Magisk

I know this is pretty old but just a headsup if you have the latest bootloader that is locked you can just download firmware for your region with an older bootloader and flash the entire thing with odin. I had the locked bootloader issue and odin fixed it.

A normal or a systemless root (S5 Neo G903F)

I want to root my phone, and I haven't been doing that kind of stuff since S3 so I'm a bit lost.
I've read the thread about root by Chainfire. From what I understand, this can be used for a phone with Android 6.01, right? On the other hand, I've read about a systemless root. Can this be done with my phone model and this Android version?
My main concern is the warranty. I know the first solution will trip the knox. What about the latter? Would this be better in my situation?
(And a minor question: my phone has found a software update. Should I do it before or after rooting my phone, or does it matter at all?)
for me and it can be different for other users, i have a preference for system root.
if you just want a stable root on your phone, and don't care about passing google security checks (safetynet) you should choose chainfires supersu. just download the latest zip (assuming you already have a custom recovery) and flash it. supersu will "decide" which rooting method (system/systemless) fits to your phone.
The more advanced method is magisk-root which gives you no option for system-root. the whole magisk concept is based on systemless changes to the system partition. it gives you the opportunity to pass safetynet and to add systemless modules. the downside is, that the usability (due to it's complexity) can sometimes be a bit tricky (trial and error )
hope this helped for your decision..
BTW: afaik is knox triggered with both methods

To add something: if supersu installs in systemless mode you can bypass it.
Flash the supersu zip
Reboot
Go to supersu and select full root wipe
Click no when asked to restore boot image
Your phone will automatically reboot don't let it go to system, go to recovery
With twrp go to terminal and enter this command without quotes "echo SYSTEMLESS=false>>/data/.supersu
Reinstall supersu zip
Reboot
You yave system root :good:

Thanks for your replies! I do not care about safetynet. I do care about warranty but from what I see, there is no way around this.
Would you update phone's software first?

Yeah update your system first and if you need warranty just full wipe root and select yes for biit image restore from supersu let us know if it works for you and don't hesitate to ask if you need anything

Thanks for your help! I'm updating the sofware right now and I will proceed with the root.
"just full wipe root and select yes for biit image restore from supersu" -I think I'm not sure what it means. Would you explain it a little bit more?

I have mine (S5 Neo G903W) rooted and as far as I can tell if you want your warranty you can unroot it anytime
The phone provider however doesn't state anything about rooting or whatnot and I am not a type of person who does stupid stuff that needs a warranty anyway lol
For warranty they can check knox status, if is tripped usually is void

Modifying Host File Without Root

I just ordered a Moto G5 Plus and expect delivery next week. I am not sure if I really want to root. I would be happy if I could just modify the host file to prevent ads. Is it possible to change the host file without root and still accept OTA updates? Any guidance in doing so is appreciated.
This is not possible as the hosts file lives in somewhere in the root folder or in /su
Your best bet would be to just root which is really no big deal, or use your home wifi router to block ads somehow.

I did not know it was possible to flash an update to a rooted stock ROM. With my Moto G3 I was restoring pre-root ROM, accept OTA, re-root, then re-flash rooted ROM data. Modifying the host file is my primary reason to root. I will search the G5 forum for FlashFire instructions.

It is hit and miss using Flashfire on Moto devices... sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, depends on what you had changed with root. Some people used it with the G 2015, but it often failed. I can't speak to the viability of it on this device though.
There is no way to modify the host file without root, period... You can use something like Adblock Browser or another browser with build in ad blocking though.
You can import host files without root with Netguard: https://github.com/M66B/NetGuard/blob/master/FAQ.md
Dunno if it can accomplish what you want though.

If you only get Adblock, fine... But if you remove system apps , then it surely wouldn't work

Yes. If you have twrp.img it's just
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
while you are booted into the bootloader.
Excellent news. Looking forward to my new phone.

Yes, but as with the G3 the Bootloader must be unlocked. Remember, that simply unlocking the Bootloader will cause SafetyNet API checks to fail in Nougat without rooting with Magisk, thus breaking OTAs as well.

If SafetyNet API check fails, understand no OTAs, what about playstore access and updates? With the G3, even though an unlocked bootlader makes the device uncertified, the device still has full access to the playstore. I am thinking some day Google will be shutting down playstore to uncertified devices and those that fail SafetyNet API checks.

SafetyNet failure itself won't stop OTAs, but just about any modifications to boot, system, or recovery will cause a failure.
Apps will install and update, however, some apps check SafetyNet and will not function if it fails... Pokemon Go, Netflix, Android Pay, Snapchat, and most most banking and financial apps come to mind, but there are plenty of others.
I am in agreement that eventually devices that are not certified will not be allowed Play Store access, someday... But SafetyNet is only part of device certification.
I can not find a way to do it.
Overwriting the hosts file on the system with twrp does not work.
Install a zip using twrp with the hosts file, either.
There really is no way to do it without having to root?

Twrp is device specific not android version specific
Magisk generally works with all android versions
If you can unlock your bootloader your set to go
TWRP works on 955F on pie beta, but as I said there, it doesn't work on rooted or debloated devices. You can use TWRP, but without root.
I have pie. Twrp recovery, rooted magisk 18 and heavily debloated. Works fine.

Hi,
Does anyone know if it is currently possible to flash the update from twrp without a reset and maintain root? Or if root if possible how to achieve it?
I have the same question, any way to do it without wiping all data..? or rooting without TWRP impossible? like kingroot or something.
Pie update (official) messed my s8 and it got stuck on bootloop, i had to flash trough odin and now i have broken knox forever, great.. I don't want to wipe all data again and I would like to possibly unroot if i root.
