Doing a system-less root on s4 using magisk possible? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

alright im thinking of doing system-less root with xposed using magisk (yes im a pokemon goer thats ticked off from its new update) just wanting to know what would be the best way to go about this. If it is possible. currently im running GoldenEYE rom android 5.0.1 dont have fastboot so i already know i have alot of work in Odin to do. would love to have CM12.1 running with a systemless root but last time i tried to even get CM12.1 loaded it never worked.
So anyidea if this is possible or not. (yes i do have stock roms at the ready from when i put on my current rom along with root methods)

You don't have to do anything in Odin.
All you need is TWRP.
Then follow the Magisk instructions.
Unroot, uninstall Xposed (if present), flash Magisk zip, flash phh root zip, download phh superuser app and Magisk manager app.

well that sucked. now have the dreaded unauthorized soft ware. found a way around it to get phone booted. going into download mode then cancel out restarting phone from there.

So I tried this exact thing two days ago because I have an S4 with the Goldeneye rom installed, and unfortunately got these results
I opened up superSU and did a full unroot, after
I deleted the xposed that was installed (v86 by dlc) using the uninstaller through TWRP.
Next I flashed magisk v6 zip along with the phh superuser zip, and ended up in a bootloop..
The phone wouldnt pass the boot animation, so i uninstalled magisk, and reflashed superSU
On my end its not working, mate.

As far as I know, systemless stuff works only on Android 6 and above.
Goldeneye is a TouchWiz ROM, therefor it's android 5.

Magisk works on Touchwiz 5.0
Magisk works on android 5.0 touchwiz. Im using lenny bard stock HPG1 rom and PoGo works perfectly

Sure you can do it. i have gt-i9500 variant with 5.1.1 port tw android. magisk work when i want to play pokemon go. the only problem i have now is the systemless xposed not working as expected.

I am under the impression I am not able to get TWRP on mine because its the later version with locked bootloader.. what options are there.. Currently Download Graded to 4.4.4 to use towel root and installed Flashfire so i can install Safestrap
Really want to use Magisk

I know this is pretty old but just a headsup if you have the latest bootloader that is locked you can just download firmware for your region with an older bootloader and flash the entire thing with odin. I had the locked bootloader issue and odin fixed it.

Trust me, I've done it without root. I had xposed installed before with root then I flashed the latest stock rom from n915w8 and flashed xposed right after without wiping data and it worked. I guess it was because the xposed modules were already configured but ultimately, I did not root in order to use xposed. The functionality of xposed is increased if you root. This is from my experience
The latest xposed for Samsung probably has some loop hole I'm unaware of that allows you to install it without root.

the boot-loader is not unlocked for n915a currently, how can we install twrp? or you mean install supersu by odin without twrp?
step 2... Install latest twrp... How can you do that if your phone has never been rooted before?
for my note edge sprint (915p) i used CWM cos twrp didnt work. after flashing supersu said i dont have root access and if i would like to have it. I SELECTED NO. after rebooting once phone booted fine. took a while for supersu to take over things and now its all good

Do you by any chance have the latest twrp (2.8.0.7) in .tar file? I've been lurking around for a while now and I'm not able to find it. I can only find .img and I need Linux to convert it to .tar to be able to Odin. I've lost root and now I can't get it back.

ok now that ive spent more time with it i believe the root i got is incomplete. on many apps supersu dialogue doesnt pop and they dont recognize the phone as rooted. i used titanium backup to try and remove system apps and despite everything going fine the apps didnt go anywhere
UPDATE: problem fixed. I edited the build.prop in /system/ using a build.prop editor and now all my apps are asking for root
In build.prop look for ro.securestorage.support=True and set it to False
Also solves if your phone keeps forgetting the wifi passwords
It works. SM-915F. Just don't forget to off 'reactivation lock' in security tab in androud in order to install TWRP successfuly. Thanks a lot!
No you're right. Twrp is in img format but you can easily convert it to tar using a linux emulator. Took me minutes to convert it to tar. Google "how to convert img to tar. Running twrp fine
Does it work in 915V ??
So,it's strange how the method works on my 915f. For example; Titanium Backup can't remove systems apps. It looks like I have a root, but not fully operated. Any advices?
Does this still trip the knox counter?
I want to root, but I must keep my warranty as this N915F is on my company's name.

Magisk on s7 & s7 edge

Hi Everyone, l have a question about this Magisk Mod and its directed to s7 & s7 edge users. If anyone is using this Mod, may you please tell us how you got it to work, coz l have tried and failed many times. Your help would be kindly appreciated..
King Addies
Root and install xposed.
I have used a stock rom, as it says on the magisk thread and followed all the instuctions and still failed.. lm not really botherd about using the mod anymore, but l made this thread so all the other people who are in my situation can get help or a tutorial on how to install it on s7 & s7 edge. Coz l could not really get much help from the official thread.

I'm using sac23's custom Note 7 port ROM. After installing his ROM, I went to SuperSU, clicked the option for cleanup to install different Super User app. Reboot phone. Then I booted into TWRP, flashed Magisk, then flashed Phh's Super User. Reboot system. Then install Magisk Manager or Auto Magisk app. Activate Auto Magisk under accessibility settings. Works like a dream.

Besides Sac23's Note 7 Port Rom, has anyone else tested or used this Mod on any other s7 or s7 edge Rom..

Magisk works fine with any ROM. You just need to use a custom kernel or:
Obtain root using CF - Auto Root
Remove root via SuperSU app
Click No when asked about restoring stock boot.img
Go through the normal Magisk/Phh Superuser steps to install
Only thing I've noticed is that banking apps can still detect that I am rooted. Not sure if this is because I did SuperSU/modified boot.img method. I may try flashing back to stock via ODIN then flashing a custom kernel and install Magisk that way and see.
I've already tried all this. Do you think it's because i've got encrypted device?!
I've tried so many combinations as well... In the end, i have to always restore the stock firmware, run CF-autoroot and xposed normally.
Any ideas why? anyone?!

Encryption isn't the reason, I'm encrypted too.. There isn't really a benefit to it right now anyways. SafetyNet has been updated, you can't pass it with Xposed PERIOD until another bypass is done by the dev.
The key like someone said on a different thread, is to run CF Auto Root, then unroot with SuperSU. Follow the steps from there and you should be good to go but as I've already said, a lot has changed since then. Su-hide isn't working half of the time etc. Better off waiting for them to sort out all the issues first.

Magisk is pointless right now. Simply having an unlocked bootloader causes SafetyNet to fail. The latest version of magisk also removed the checkbox to turn root on and off. To use Snapchat YOU MUST login before any modifications. Make a titanium backup of Snapchat logged in, then you can restore it whenever you want.

What part of S7/S7Edge do you fail to understand?
Or, boot into TWRP, format data to unencrypt then flash latest magisk and reboot. Once booted, open magisk manager hit menu button and open settings, check magisk hide. Exit settings, open menu and open magisk hide, there you can check any app you want to hide from root. done.

Any root method for C432B380?

Well, ask for unlock code - that's the first step.
I am interested in this as well, as from what I see some people seem to run into problems. Say one is on Nougat C432B380 (I'm B381) and has now got the unlock code. What then? First of all, unlocking the bootloader will result in a reset, clean C432B380 installation, right? Or will there be any need to flash something else?
EDIT: I passed the unlock part following the Guide, and ended up with a clean Nougat installation as I thought. Now what? In the OldDroid TWRP thread I see many people having trouble...

I recommend staying away from any custom roms for now as all seem to have problems... you say you have an unlocked bootloader, then next step would be flashing a custom recovery, then from there... flashing supersu... try not to do much more than that and accept a fully functioning rooted phone better than getting a squichy camera or whatever from custom roms.... wait till they get stable

I was not planning to install a custom ROM, I just want root, mainly for Viper4Android and some other things, but after reading the whole OldDroid TWRP thread I saw some people reporting problems with bootloops and whatnot, mainly after flashing SuperSU. Is flashing TWRP and then EliteKernel and rooting with phh or Magisk preferable? I just got my device back from the Huawei services, with a new board and everything and I don't want to ruin the stock installation again, so I am trying to be a bit more certain before I do anything.
Thank you for replying.
EDIT: Okay, so what I did was flash the latest OldDroid TWRP through fastboot and then I booted into recovery and flashed the latest Magisk (v13.3 I think). Now I have root and everything seems to work. So happy.
EDIT2: It seems that although it says I have root, I can't actually do anything with it, e.g. I can't uninstall system apps with Link2SD even though it says it was successful - reboot, still there - and the modules won't appear even after installing.... So, I don't know what's wrong.

I restored a backup of the boot partition I had made when I first flashed TWRP which seems to have deleted Magisk, the app told me it was not installed (even though I see now a Magisk folder in data...) and then flashed Super SU, but I still can't delete system apps and having trouble with Viper*. But maybe it's not SU's fault. I don't know. I flashed v2.79, I previously had trouble with the newest versions.
Also, I had not activated the Hide function, I think.
*It is driving me crazy! Why does it not work? Supposedly I am root, I even deleted the system apps with the file managers but when I exited and reentered the folder they were there again. What is going on?... Wait... Is this normal, is it because it is system-less root?
To root any nougat fw:
1)unlock bootloader. You have to get unlock code from huawey and then in fastboot mode do: "fastboot oem unlock yourcode"
2)flash twrp recovery, i suggest you the hassan's recovery https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120756473
3)in fastboot mode do "fastboot flash recovery nameoftherecovery.img
4)reboot in recovery and flash this supersu

You can't flash TWRP if the bootloader is locked. Since it appears you have a US version of Verizon's S8, the bootloader is locked. Request: Can someone Loki the latest TWRP (official release is not properly lokied)

Although TWRP is *supposed* to be lokied, it turns out that all the 3.x versions are not properly lokied. This has been reported in the last couple of pages of this thread, and it's been reported in their bug tracker (although they seem to be ignoring it for now).
One of the users in that xda thread was kind enough to loki a few TWRP releases, but the latest one he did was v3.1.1.0, and he hasn't done any more since.
Can someone else be kind enough to Loki the latest version of TWRP for jflteatt, located here? (Preferably both IMG and TAR, so people can use it with whichever installation method they prefer/need)
My guide tells you how to Loki CWM recovery, it should work the same for TWRP (should is the keyword here).

Thank you. However, the method described requires root.
I had root on CyanogenMod 11, but ever since I flashed LineageOS 14.1, I haven't been able to root my phone without bricking it - so this method won't work for me.
How are you on lineage OS without having root? You need root to install a custom recovery which then in turn allows a custom ROM. I know lineage OS hides or does sometimes with superSU, so it might be hiding root as well (unless I am thinking of Oct OS).
Your phone is probably rooted, use the root checker app from the play store to check. If by chance somehow it's not, then use towel root, king root, one click root, safe root, CF auto root, or kingo root to root it. If all else fails you might have to ODIN back to stock, then root, then install the latest TWRP then Loki it using my guide then install lineage OS.

Your phone is probably rooted, use the root checker app from the play store to check. If by chance somehow it's not, then use towel root, king root, one click root, or kingo root to root it.

No, my phone is definitely not rooted. It *previously* had root under CyanogenMod 11. That's how I had a custom recovery installed. So I was able to use TWRP to flash LineageOS 14.1 just fine. However, here are the results of my trying to root this phone under LOS 14.1:
1. Magisk: Bricked on Samsung Logo.
2. SuperSU (normal systemless): Not installed properly. Seems to fail on patching the boot image.
3. SuperSU (system mode): Bricked on Lineage boot screen.
4. LineageOS addonsu: Installs fine, but doesn't seem to do anything. I still don't have root.
I've tried posting about this in a few places on xda, but so far, I haven't had any luck.
So *maybe* if I revert back to an older version of Android, I might be able to get a working root. But in order to be recent, it's looking like I have little choice but to finally retire this phone and get something newer. Which is unfortunate, because there's nothing wrong with the phone hardware-wise.
Perhaps I'll try one of the other root options you mentioned and hope it doesn't brick my phone as well.
That's really odd that you have a custom recovery and ROM without root. You might have to ODIN back to stock Android 4.2.2 jelly bean using the MDL firmware .tar file. Can you revert back to a TWRP that is Loki?

I have a Lokied version of TWRP (3.1.1.0), which is working fine. But with all of the problems I've been having trying to get root, I was wondering if perhaps a newer version of TWRP might make the difference. That's why I was trying to get a Lokied version of the latest TWRP.
Ah so you're trying to gain root by flashing TWRP. No idea why lineage OS removed root, unless the people who made it built it that way. The only thing I can think of is either try all the root apps I mentioned before and if that doesn't work then ODIN back to MDL stock and use towel root to root. If lineage OS is anything like Oct OS, you will have to root using a root .zip file.
I wish I could be more help, but I haven't ever used lineage OS before due to liking touchwiz. I run golden eye ROM on my at&t Loki phone.

My guide tells you how to Loki CWM recovery, it should work the same for TWRP (should is the keyword here).

Unfortunately it does not work:
Code:
1|[email protected]:/data/local/tmp # ./loki_flash recovery twrp.img
[+] loki_flash v1.1
[-] Input file is not a Loki image.

Thanks for trying it! It's now confirmed my guide is only for CWM recovery.
Not sure if you've already searched it out, but HERE is my thread with the latest Loki patched twrp. I lokied jfltexx 3.2.3-0 which works on the i337 (ATT) s4.

You're good ? I had it in a separate post, and I just created that thread the other day to give it a permanent home more easily found.
