I've been searching high and wide for this specific problem, but for the life of me I can't find it.
My S8 (and a Note8 I just bought) keep showing bloody annoying ads at the bottom of the browser.
It's a bar, with a little notch protruding from the top right of the bar with an X to close it (see attached screenshot).
It happens in the cut-down Chrome and also the normal chrome (if I "Open in Chrome").
I thought it was an app I installed, but the Note8 does it as well with absolutely nothing installed.
Is it the phone, or is it the damn Daily record site?
Can anyone shed light on this, and more importantly how to get rid of the damn thing?
You probably need an ad-blocker for your browser. I use the Samsung Internet browser which has built-in ad-blocker, not sure if Chrome has that feature on mobile.

The ads are from the website you are using and not from the phone.
You can either use a web browser with ad blocking capabilities (samsung browser and opera have adblock I think)
Another option is to use Adhell2, which blocks ads on an OS level, and blocks most ads on the web and in apps as well.

Thanks.
Seems like Adhell doesn't work any more, from the thread at least.
Any others to help (In Chrome)?

Adhell 2 should work: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/themes/adhell-2-rootless-ad-blocking-t3663559
AdHell 2 took me to MABS, which is supported.
However, after installing MABS (and it works because all the ad spaces are now blank) this stupid notch thing still appears at the bottom, just with something that would otherwise be an ad.
So I would question your assertion that it isn't the phone.. It doesn't seem to be this way on any other phone, only the S8 and Note8. But I'll double-check.
MABS, don't you mean SABS?

It isn't the phone, it's the website. I view the same website in Samsung Internet browser with it's built-in blocker extension capability, and I don't see the ad or any empty placeholder where an ad might appear.
You're using Chrome so you may have to do a bit more work to get the same ad blocking capability since it isn't built in. But it is definitely the website, not the phone.
Regarding AdHell 2, the installation process is a bit tricky, but it certainly does work, although I would say it works too well in some cases, which led me to remove it.
I've got Adhell2 before but I switched to SABS and it works like charm. If you're too fortunate to spend some money you can try Disconnect pro in the Galaxy App store, it works excellent too!

You're right, it is the web page. However, if I open the page in the Samsung browser it has a white band at the bottom (without a notch) that would otherwise hold an advert (I know this because it says "Advertisement" on it!). Do you get this?
So MABS stops the ad coming through, but what's really required is to stop the damn browser giving up all this space to adverts. Is that a fair summary?

I don't get this, as I said I use the adblocker in Samsung Internet browser which can be found and configured in the browser's settings. This completely removes the ad.
Whatever this "MABS" is you've installed is clearly not working properly. To clarify, you mean MABS and not SABS, correct? The one for Samsung devices that I know of is called SABS not MABS.

Is there a particular reason why you're tied to Chrome? If not I would suggest just using the Samsung Internet browser or maybe try Brave: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brave.browser&hl=en. Brave is built specifically for blocking ads and increased privacy.
Probably only cos I have the bookmarks in there, and come to think of it I don't really need to sync bookmarks from the desktop either, so probably will start afresh with the Samsung jobby. Looks quite good.. I'm shocked!

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by Samsung's browser when I first tried it, I switched to it pretty quickly. I believe Samsung has a Chrome for desktop extension that can sync bookmarks over to the Samsung browser.

The only wish that I have with Honeycomb web browser is ability to change USER AGENT STRING. That's all I want.
I know, there is that about:debug trick, but it does not stick and we must do it again and again. Even does not work on certain website.
So, Google ... please please please add this!
Don't force me to use Dolphin
Is there anyway to edit the ".apk" and make it permanent change An idea for hacker with root.

My user agent string has never changed back, what are you talking about?
The reason some sites come up mobile is because they match on the word Android instead of mobile. Websites are to blame, not google in this case.

Create a book mark to about:config on your home screen. All you do is click the shortcut then hit the go button in the URL bar.
I tried with my Nexus S and browse to Facebook.com (full site).
It worked for a while, but then went back to Touch.Facebook.com.
Because of this, I am using Dolphin Mini which has option to browse as desktop browser. Problem solved.

The main app any tablet user uses is the Browser I'd assume and unfortunately its the weak spot on Honeycomb.
Viewing most desktop sites is very unbearable (try facebook, XDA, Google Plus) as the page lags, and text input is very difficult as well (huge lag)
Do any devs have any idea how to improve the speed on this stock browser in custom roms or so, I remember a kernel on the Xoom fixed things
This link has more info:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17353
If we could get a fix for this I could finally love my tab.
There is a lot less lag on the bonsai rom, but it's not completely gone. Ultimately google will have to be the to fix it.
theyve never mentioned it /acknowledged it
thats the worrying part
Ya know what actually, as,much as i dont like the look of the browser, opera mobile is the best functioning browser ive ever used. There is no browser lag, it render eveything exactly the way my desktop does. Im very suprised that google cannot mirror whatever opera mobile has done.
Ill give you an example of where opera finally got it right...
Try and do a search on xdas site and see what happens. It opens the text box for a second and then it drops the keyboard. Its never works and it is so annoying.
Now try it on opera mobile. Oh my god, it works!
It doesnt work on dolphin, firefox or any other browser ive tried. Opera mobile it works. Can a super sharp coder figure out a way to take whatever opera has in it and put it in the stock HC browser??
it`strange becouse in some forums is all ok, in other the text is very very slow :-(

I tried Opera and everything works great except two things. the first is that often times you will enter text in a text box, and then when you minimize the keyboard to click the submit button, it removes everything you just typed! I had this happen to me about 5 times and then I gave up and uninstalled it. The other issue is mainly a preference, but the tabs suck! Give me real tabs like the stock browser. opera and Firefox have a horrible tab implementation on Android.

Plus I am very tired of getting to the "mobile" version of the websites.
Its a 10 inch Tablet..
Google needs to give this thing a Desktop identity and load the desktop version of the websites. One thing Apple is doing right with the iPad.
Even better get rid of this Chrome Based Android Mobile Browser and put there the real Chrome.

even when I've manually set the useragent to a desktop browser, I still get kicked to the mobile versions of some sites. And sites like...google search, which should know better!
I've tested a bunch of browsers at this point and none of them are perfect. I think dolphin comes closest, but it definitely has little things that are annoying (such as it being way to easy to close the wrong tab)

I am a little confused. I don't have an issue with the browser or the typing...The pages load and scroll perfect and there is little to no lag at all on my typing. There can be a slight lag at times when i use the Keyboard/Dock but that is it.
Does anyone else have no issue?
Surprisingly dissapointed with browsing speed.
Coming from an LG G2 which was insantaneous in loading pages, my note 4 lags chronically.
This is observed in every browser I've tried.
It should be noted that the pages which the Note 4 loads, have significantly more and larger advertisements.
Symptoms:
1. 2-5 seconds longer in loading pages when compared to the LG G2.
2. Momentary freeze when swipe to scroll.
3. Noticeable jump when scrolling - every time with each swipe.
Has anyone experienced similar issue or able to offer any insight towards resolving?
Your input would be greatly appreciated!

I think that the biggest problem is that most web pages are 75% ads, and 25% content that you want.
Web designers are lazy, and they just throw every single ad they can find on there, and they make a mess of things. It is really annoying when you just want to read something and have to go through 14 ads and commercials to read what you went there for.
I think that this is the modern day equivalent of the pop-up. Most have those blocked pretty well, so now all those annoying popups are just integrated into the page itself and it really bogs things down. And I think that in their greedy zeal to force these ads down our throats, they make them less effective because we just learn to tune them out and become numb to them...
If it was an ad or two on a page, I might see it and check it out. WHen it is 9 or 10 I get annoyed and just start flicking past them to get what I want, or I give up and try another page altogether...
It will help a lot if you get rid of the ads. I am using ABP to block all ads easily when in wifi. no need for root.
if you got root adaway is the way to go.

Alright this is the final solutions I have found. If it wont work for you then it's the end of the world...
Option one: 1) install samsung support
2) disable javascript and restart chrome
If you need javascript enabled keep it enabled and make sure samsung support is installed
1) enter chrome://flags
2) look for "Enable Experimental JavaScript" restart and reply here for feedback...
Also don't forget to enable the 512 hack as well

You cant do anything about that, it will say that for all non root Adblockers. The slower page loading is because the Adblocker has to remove the ads first before showing you the site, which results in a delay. So theres not really a way around it.

No, in fact AdAway makes webpages load faster as the ad server is never even reached. HOSTS file blocking is more seamless than a makeshift VPN for blocking ads over the web and in apps. Also no key icon issues.

The way these non-root adblockers work is by using a local VPN. That's what the key icon is for. It means you're connected to a VPN. Your traffic is being routed through this local VPN and that's how they remove the ads.

Yeah not by default. I don't have it here to check first hand, but look around in the menus, there is an option to install add ons or plug-ins not sure how they call it.
Once there search "adblock", you'll find what you need.
It works well when I need it, some websites are absolutely not usable if the pop-ups and other sh*t isn't blocked.

Try Adguard. It's the best one I've used. It even blocked ads in apps so you don't have to pay for ad free versions.

By far the best non-root adblocker I have ever tried (on my S7) and it takes a lot to impress me. Give it a spin, see how it works for you. It blocks ads everywhere. Browser, apps, etc.,.
As for the key that you see in the notifications, it's only there to alert you that you're connected and all traffic is being routed through the VPN (your adblocker is active).

Why don't you root your phone, install Adaway, and unroot again? Seems to be the best solution.

Updates are not coming out often, it's enough to update it around every 6 months.

Hi all,
I did a cursory check to see if there was a thread on this and couldn't find it so I'm going to ask outright.
When I get sent an amazon web link or want to pay something with PayPal, to give a couple of examples, I'd like the default app to open and not a new browser page. I'm not to android so I've had plenty of phones in the past that have operated in this way (oneplus 3t being the most recent example). Unfortunately I can't seem to get it to work with my S8 and it's a bit of an annoyance.
Does anyone know how to get this to work?
I have tried changing some of the settings in the attached screen but no success yet.
Any ideas?

That would be Chrome but that doesn't work. It isn't set as the default for Amazon/PayPal/YouTube urls

Anyone? The lack of threads on this would suggest no one else has this issue but three of us have recently purchased the phone and are all having the same issue
The time I've seen this, is the page gives an option to launch in app sometimes, I'm not really sure how you can set it to open in their respective apps. I am interested in this though so gonna look into this

That would be great. I can't find an answer and I don't get an option to choose the app...mostly. As a test, try and get this link to open in Amazon. It's 'shared' directly from the app do the expectation is that it would open in the app

Yeah, I get the 'view in app' option also but that's an Amazon URL thing I believe. It doesn't give that option, for example, with a PayPal payment. It simply goes to the website which is what I'm hoping to change.
I'm surprised it's only you and I engaging in this. I find this very annoying and thought others might also
I've read about it a bit and involves something called app to app linking.
It's difficult for me because I've never had a device that launched, there are some apps that launch but from what I can remember when it comes to amazon and PayPal I've never had it auto launch. But you've given an answer, I'm just wondering if it has something to do with the framework, one plus is pretty much clean android whereas the s8 is touchwiz

Possibly that's it. I just assumed this was a given regardless of framework but it appears not. Does anyone know how other phones interact with URLs? Like I said, the 1+ was perfect in this regards.
So you are having issues when you attempting to open Amazon links with your app instead of the browser?

When there is a Amazon or say PayPal link web url, clicking on it opens a new browser Window instead of its respective app
Try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tasomaniac.openwith
Good luck.
So this is EXACTLY what I have been fighting with on my S8.
The play store link from thehaXor opens the play store aop on my S7, but on my S8 takes me to the browser version of the play store.
I'll try the suggested app now and report back.
Install another browser and see if that one opens the same. Try the Firefox
