My screen stopped working (started slowly as a purple spot on the top left of the screen, advanced until I could no longer see the bottom 2/3rds of the screen, and now doesn't work at all). Verizon and Asurion (insurance company) is "out of stock" on the ZenFone AR, Verizon claims it's "discontinued", and were only offering a Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S6 as an "equivalent" replacement, so I had to wound up with a Note 8.
I stupidly left some stuff (pictures, other stuff) stored on the phone itself.
The phone got turned off, and requires a "bootloader PIN (?)" (the bit where before the OS loads you need to enter a PIN to decrypt it). I'd really like to be able to get some stuff off of the device, but can't until it's fully powered on.
I bought a cheap USB-C to HDMI thing (can't post links, it's "USB-C to HDMI CableCreation Type C(Thunderbolt 3 Compatible)to HDMI 4K Hub Adapter (DP Alt Mode), Male to Female, for Macbook(Pro)/Chromebook Pixel/Dell XPS 13/Yoga 910/Samsung S8/S8+, White" on Amazon). It works on my Note 8, but (predictably) doesn't work on the ZenFone AR while it's locked, so I still can't enter the PIN to unlock it. I don't even think it's currently on the PIN screen, I can't tell.
Does anybody know if there's a solution to get stuff off this phone? Did I buy the wrong thing?
I don't have any advice for your but I just noticed a purple "spot" on the top left of my phone (Asus Zenfone AR) today. I hope you get answers and will follow this convo as I think I'll have to get mine replaced shortly.

Each time I dock my EEE PAD in the docking station I only have a 10% chance it will recognize the keyboard. Sometimes I get the keyboard only, sometime it recognizes the keyboard and the mouse (pad) but mostly it recognizes neither. Sometimes it says it is connected to the docking station and still doesn't recognize the keyboard but mostly it says it is not connected to the docking station after insertion.
I called ASUS support - they had me reset the transformer (Hold volume 'down' while hitting power) and also do the Factory Data Reset. Curiously while on the phone with them the keyboard just started generating 'd' keystrokes over and over! Finally they sent me instructions for updating the firmware, which I was to do myself. I did not research how to do this last step because I think it is completely unnecessary: the latest version is 8.4.4.5 and I already have that version. I called ASUS support back but they say their computers are down and call back tomorrow. However, the last thing he said was I will have to send it to their repair center in CA.
Basically, two questions: 1) Do you think I should download the firmware anyway? 2) Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I am not a genius but I would try reinstalling firmware. Maybe you got a bad firmware in your keyboard?
Fascinating is it not?
Not trying to be too simplistic but you might also make sure that the thing is really in there good too. The connection between my tablet and dock is pretty tough to get just right and the only way I really know for sure it's in there is to pull up on either side of the screen to make sure it's seated properly. I can imagine if one was more finicky then mine it might look like it's in there, latch slid and all, but still pop one side out if you tugged.
Just a thought based on my use.
I noticed the same thing...it's easy to think the dock is in correctly...it has to "click" and the little bar has to go ALL the way to the right side of the slot..otherwise it's not making 100% contact.
I had a broadly similar issue with mine. I eventually got the retailer to accept it back as faulty and ordered another [from a different supplier so it was from a different batch] and have had no issues with the new one... so far!
I am quite conscientious about docking the tablet solidly in the docking station. I use both hands (on each side of the tablet) and push firmly till I see the silver clasp pop completely over to the right. I have tried tugging it out afterward and neither side will budge upward.
Bottom-line is ASUS created an RMA # for me today. They want only the docking station, and not the tablet also. (My concern is what if the problem is the connector on the tablet?). One of the three main reasons I purchased ASUS was reliability, yet this is the first computer I have bought which failed out of the box! Anyway, it's nice to have prompt support and service. I called them 3 times and got through in less then 5 minutes all 3 times.

1.It can't hurt.
2.Nope, all is well here.
Hello everyone!
After finally getting an external battery charger, I've been able to use my Samsung Focus again.
I'm still, however, having USB connectivity issues.
Here's what I've tried.
-Reinstalling Zune
-Using other USB ports on my laptop.
-Using another computer
-Reinstalling the Samsung USB Driver
-Using a few different microUSB cables, including one from another Samsung phone
-Cleaning the microUSB port.
-installing WMDC
EDIT: -I've also made sure my phone's in Zune Sync USB Mode in the Diagnosis app.
When I connect the device, it says "Unrecognized USB Device Detected", I've tried replacing the drivers with the Zune driver, which works half the time, but it still has a yellow caution icon next to it. Saying things like "the device cannot start", "a request for the USB device descriptor failed.", and "device enumeration failed".
So now it's down to it being the software on the phone or the phone microUSB port.
I'd love to hard reset and see if it's the software, but if it's the port and I've reset, then I'm screwed.
I've searched numerous forums, including this one, and still haven't seen any working solutions.
EDIT: Also, I've noticed in the Battery Status app... it'll say "charging" for a few seconds and then go to "discharging".
Some specs:
Phone:
-Samsung Focus SGH-i917R
-Rev 1.3 on AT&T
-Windows Phone 7.10.8107.79
-DFT Freedom ROM [I guess it was a Rogers version]
Laptop PC:
-Dell XPS17 L702X
-Windows 8 Release Preview 6.2.8400
-Intel Core i7 2720QM @ 2.20GHz
-NVIDIA GeForce GT555M (3GB) @ 1080p120
-16GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory
If anyone can help, it'd be huge!
And if there's anything I've neglected to mention, please let me know and I'll edit the post.
Thank you so much!
So I ended up doing a hard reset, and much to my dismay, it's still spitting out USB Device Not Recognized. It reset to the DFT Freedom (Chinese New Year) ROM I have on there, which I didn't quite expect... I'm wondering if that's the problem or not. When I get closer to my upgrade next month (Lumia 920, here I come) I'll likely get ballsy-er, and might even dismantle the phone and see if there's anything physically amiss with the port.
Still, any suggestions, feel free.
Have the same issue. Did same as you searching internet for any hints.
Have had this issue for 6months now, just been living with it and syncing files to skydrive and Gmail with WiFi.
I even took phone apart down to the circuit board level to see if anything noticeable or maybe connector or any components with broken solder. Hit it with some heat from SMT soldering iron to get a bit of reflow in that area, didn't make a difference. Ohmed it out as far as I could go thinking data lines were shorted or something...no luck.
I'm leaning toward this being a USB receiver chip level issue inside the Samsung Focus. Was hoping it would be something simple. Who knows, maybe that ROHS solder wiskering issue is haunting me somewhere in that phone.
FYI this issue came up around same time I had the repeated chiming issue. The one that only goes away when you do plug in the USB connector with charger or PC. Luckily haven't experienced that issue in 5 or so months. But did have it dissappear for a month then reappear again back then, so anything goes.
Note about 2 months ago I plugged phone into computer and it tried to sync up, zune popped up. I got excited, but after remove and plug in again, have not seen been able to get it back since.
I too am having the same problem.
First of all, be warned - if you decide to pull apart your Samsung focus, it's easy to do, but I found that the SMT port for the antenna is VERY fragile.
Steps to open it after turning it off:
1) open back plate.
2) pop out battery, sim, and expansion memory
3) take out the 7 screws.
4) with a flat blade (whether that be a screwdriver, flat tweezers, or even a guitar pick), insert it in the gap between the chrome and the FRONT of the phone, then gently twist to pop the "back" off.
5) You will now need to separate the volume buttons from the side of the phone (the plastic comes out easy enough).
This is a sticker back, and getting it off is hard and can tear easy.Take your time.
From there, there are several flat PCB sections that have multipin connectors hidden under them. They need to be pried off - they do not require a lot of force.
Now the big reason not to do this:
The f$#%ing antenna connector. It will pop off, but the connections to the mainboard are VERY fragile. I'd suggest pushing against it and use tweezers to rotate and lift the connector.
All that said, I've been looking for a cause for the problems you've been having - there is one other symptom you haven't mentioned, and this has been a problem for a lot of focus owners - the constant dinging. You may not be getting it (if you're phone is on vibrate, then it's no surprise), but every time the device "sees" the usb connection to charge, it Dings (at least, for me).
Yeah. I *want* to either fix it, or drop it in the toilet.
My phone is off any warranty already, and Samsung refuses to help. I'm not buying any more Samsung products ... and before this, I was humming and hawing between the Nokia 920 and the ATIV S (for the screen size).
I have a Galaxy S5 that belongs to my brother which has a cracked screen. It powers on fine and recently factory resetting itself but can't see the screen. I'm trying to recover photos from the device of my brothers son during the first year of his life. The photos are very important to him and I'm trying my best to recover them.
I'm using MobileEdit Forensics and other recovery software but having problems connecting to the device. I'm thinking it's because of USB debugging isn't enabled. Is there a command of the line code I can run to enable it?
Would replacing the screen be any benefit to me? Am I taking the right approach?
Thanks in advance for any help given.
Do you know if touching any part of the screen has any effect (even of you can't see what touching it does)?
Replacing the screen is an option, but it's an expensive option if there are other things that might/could work instead.
The reason I asked about whether the screen is still responsive is because if it is, you can simply get an MHL adapter from somewhere like ebay and use it to connect your device to a TV so that whatever is on the phone screen (even if you can't see it) will be on the TV screen. Then you can perform the retrieval from the phone by looking at the TV screen.
The MHL adapter I got to use with my phone cost me £5.
The galaxy s5 don't have a digitizer so probably if the screen is dead, then the touch function is too(as I know from my brothers note 3 witch has the same mechanism for the screen).
You said you did a factory reset on the phone.. If you did, wouldn't those pictures be deleted?
A good option is to try Samsung back up (I think it backs up pictures too) or other back up software the phone may have..
Another thing to try is if the phone have adb enabled then you could unlock it by:
Powering it on
Let it auto connect of to a wifi you have already given the password for it when the phone was workings (if WiFi was enabled last time the phone worked)
Log it to Samsung website and apply the'unlock my phone' option
Then connect it to the PC and obtain the pictures...
Tryed to see if the pictures are located in the SD card?
If nothing of this works then the only solutions remaining are repairing the screen or get it to a data recovery company..
Hope I helped you and good luck with it
Uh...The S5 *does* have a digitizer....In exactly the same way that *every* other touchscreen device ever produced does.

It doesn't.. It reads touch events directly from the amoled screen.. The digitizer is just a glass for the s5.. It does nothing, the phone can work too if you just remove the glass and it reads touches normally
The digitizer is the part of the screen that tells the device *where* the screen was touched ie the 'grid reference' of the interaction. If the S5 doesn't have a digitizer, what replaces it...without the digitizer how is the S5 going to know what to do when you touch the glass at a specific point...which app/function is being selected at any given location on the display if the device can't tell the location of the touch?
---------- Post added at 09:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:51 PM ----------
The digitizer part of the screen exists...pure and simple. It is usually bonded to the underside of the outer glass panel.
If as you say, the touch works without the glass, then it's built into the amoled display....but it *is* present and a part of the screen, regardless of what part of the screen module it's built into.
That *may* well have implications for the touch functionality.
If it's just the 'backlighting' that has failed, but the touch functionality remains, then connecting the device to a TV via MHL should work.
If the screen is totally dead, an MHL connection will be pointless, and a new screen is probably the only option. But as has already been mentioned, if a factory reset has been performed, the chances are that what you are trying to recover has already been erased.
I'm locked out of my S5, can't see the screen or use touchscreen. USB port is shot too so no ADB magic will help unless it's wireless. I have working led light and wireless qI charger. NFC still works...anyone have any idea how I can extract data?
Wow... kinda sounds like you're screwed.
Maybe solder in a new USB port and then try to extract the data through that route? Or, replace the screen. Or both.
In any case, let it be a lesson to always keep good backups.
I originally had the USB port go out, then I locked myself out after 10 swipes of fingerprint failed and I had long forgotten my pin code. I had a second S5 that I could no longer root so it became the source I got the new USB port from. I wanted to odin firmware to my locked out phone so i needed to change usb port. Dismantling the S5 proved hard for me, as I broke the screen and digitizer. go figure

Like a few others scattered around the subforum, I'm looking to do an in-car tablet install. Like others I hit the "Can't charge and use OTG at the same time, you need an ancient nexus and Timur's" just as old but revered ROM." wall.

Then a hole in the matrix appeared and I saw this post on a different device thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/help/usb-otg-charge-t3588019
The second post there, refers to a vendor LAVA whom "LAVA is the only manufacturer of adapters for Samsung tablets that allows that since Samsung doesn't sell anymore their hubs" (from that post).
Confirmed that the Compatability list shows SM-T580 (the device amazon has factory refurbs for 200$):

Would it be possible this is the device to make the magic happen? http://lavalink.com/samsung-tablet-adapters/
EditToAdd: Tech Spec sheet here for the meaty innards: http://lavalink.com/wp-content/uploads/manuals/sts_product_family_manual.pdf Main takeaway for me was don't extend the cable to the tablet.
Also found the "cheap" lol single port on amazon with a wide swing of reviews: Encouraged by the long one that says it is working with external DAC: https://www.amazon.com/SimulCharge-1-port-Adapter-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B00MOQFUQM
Also this mini-writeup shows one in use in 2015 with DAC, am I missing something on why this was a wall for many?: http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum...-usb-hub-samsung-galaxy-tablets-charging.html
Thanks for any help,

On the (i hope) tail end of the first version of my dash tablet install, and after my research and work over the past few days, I will try to answer my own question -- just for others. no pity for me. OTG-Host was not a "must-have" (yet).
My big mistake (i think) was not being aware of the distinction between OTG-Accessory and OTG-Host. The Lava-link hub/cable in my OP allows OTG-A and charging the device. OTG-H seems to be a different animal,.. something that the kernel and maybe the hardware has to support? I have flashed Extremely ROM on my T580 and a USB keyboard plugs in to OTG cable and is detected, but a USB RLT-SDR device is not detected (nor powered).
So I guess back to the beginning, still need Kernel support for OTG-Host? Correct?

I had to rig in the mount since a eclipse console is so small. I didnt want a 5 inch or 7 inch screen i wired a switch to the factory amp for remote turn on and a headphone jack to the fro and rear left rite of the factory amp as the eclipses some have a fac amp under the seat to the factory stereo used the fac stereo power wires for a 12 volt usb charger in the dash to turn tablet on with the key and my fancy little led toggle for the amp power
