I have a Galaxy S5 that belongs to my brother which has a cracked screen. It powers on fine and recently factory resetting itself but can't see the screen. I'm trying to recover photos from the device of my brothers son during the first year of his life. The photos are very important to him and I'm trying my best to recover them.
I'm using MobileEdit Forensics and other recovery software but having problems connecting to the device. I'm thinking it's because of USB debugging isn't enabled. Is there a command of the line code I can run to enable it?
Would replacing the screen be any benefit to me? Am I taking the right approach?

Replacing the screen is an option, but it's an expensive option if there are other things that might/could work instead.
The reason I asked about whether the screen is still responsive is because if it is, you can simply get an MHL adapter from somewhere like ebay and use it to connect your device to a TV so that whatever is on the phone screen (even if you can't see it) will be on the TV screen. Then you can perform the retrieval from the phone by looking at the TV screen.
The MHL adapter I got to use with my phone cost me £5.
The galaxy s5 don't have a digitizer so probably if the screen is dead,then the touch function is too(as I know from my brothers note 3 witch has the same mechanism for the screen).
You said you did a factory reset on the phone.. If you did, wouldn't those pictures be deleted?
A good option is to try Samsung back up (I think it backs up pictures too) or other back up software the phone may have..
Another thing to try is if the phone have adb enabled then you could unlock it by:
Powering it on
Let it auto connect of to a wifi you have already given the password for it when the phone was workings (if WiFi was enabled last time the phone worked)
Log it to Samsung website and apply the'unlock my phone' option
Then connect it to the PC and obtain the pictures...
Tryed to see if the pictures are located in the SD card?
If nothing of this works then the only solutions remaining are repairing the screen or get it to a data recovery company..

It doesn't.. It reads touch events directly from the amoled screen.. The digitizer is just a glass for the s5.. It does nothing, the phone can work too if you just remove the glass and it reads touches normally
The digitizer is the part of the screen that tells the device *where* the screen was touched ie the 'grid reference' of the interaction. If the S5 doesn't have a digitizer, what replaces it...without the digitizer how is the S5 going to know what to do when you touch the glass at a specific point...which app/function is being selected at any given location on the display if the device can't tell the location of the touch?

The digitizer part of the screen exists...pure and simple. It is usually bonded to the underside of the outer glass panel.
If as you say, the touch works without the glass, then it's built into the amoled display....but it *is* present and a part of the screen, regardless of what part of the screen module it's built into.
That *may* well have implications for the touch functionality.
If it's just the 'backlighting' that has failed, but the touch functionality remains, then connecting the device to a TV via MHL should work.
If the screen is totally dead, an MHL connection will be pointless, and a new screen is probably the only option. But as has already been mentioned, if a factory reset has been performed, the chances are that what you are trying to recover has already been erased.

I've got a Samsung Focus that no longer has a working display. It seems the rest of the phone functions perfectly, but I'm unable to see what is happening. I think the display is recoverable, but I'm not positive (it's almost like there's no power being sent to it).
So when I connect to Zune software, I'm unable to view my phone contents because I have a lock pin. This becomes problematic with a non-working display. So one solution to my problem is how can I remove this code OR factory reset my phone without getting screen conformations.
Secondly, would it be worth an investment to repair the screen by buying a new one? It seems to be about ~$130 online for new displays and I'm very comfortable doing modifications like this with mobile devices

What I suggest is read the diagnisis codes thread and see if you find something useful there (code, advice). Personally, I haven't heard of any code disabling the screen but there might be one. The hard reset combo from the wiki should cover that too, I think.
Now, that being said, I see 3 possibilities, higher probability first:
1. screen is damaged (and/or possibly something else). if it's broken, you can confirm.
2. screen connector/cord is loose (should be easy to fix)
3. software/code issue
1 is hardware repair
2 is easy fix, still hardware
3 is easier fix. here, you need a secondary phone, identical. you can perform the exact steps side-by-side to copy/make sure you got it right.
I know it's not a loose connector issue. I've triple checked that and have rubbed it all down in alcohol to make sure it wasn't a dirt issue. I also cannot do anything that requires the digiplex as none of it seems to be registered.
Things that work for sure:
Sound (internal speaker)
Power Button
Volume Buttons
Touch buttons on the front at the bottom (by windows key)

I have recently bough a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight (BNRV350). Used, no guarantee. It looks fine (has only a minor scratch on the light dispersing layer). Problem is - the lower half of the touch sensors give misplaced readings. For example - during the registration process I cannot get through the language selection screen. I can correctly mark English, but when I want to press an arrow to go further, Nook changes my mark to French, instead of getting me to the next screen. Cleaning borders of the screen with microfiber cloth and cotton swabs did not help.
I have another NSTG working fine, so:
1. I tried to copy its stock system backup and loading it to malfunctioning one. It didn't help. I could not even unlock the screen (although I could press "power off" or "cancel" buttons after holding power button).
2. I tried swapping mainboards (IR sensors are on them, not in the screen assembly). And It turned out, that wherever mainboard of the faulty unit is, the touch does not work properly. I tried to blow out the dust from those misbehaving sensors hoping that it just somehow got on the motherboard, but it did not help either.
So the question is: What else can I do to make those IR sensors work properly?

Maybe try to look on the sensors with a cellphone camera in dark room-then probably you will see which of the ir leds aren't working (if the problem is in leds not the sensors)

Unfortunately I couldn't find any camera able (tried mobile phone, point'n'shoot, DSLR...) to detect IR in their stock configuration (and messing up with disassembling the sensor filters seemed as not worth the case). I ended up buying another NSTG with shattered eink screen and salvaging its properly working mainboard (+completely fine battery, all for about $7). Problem solved. Kind of.

I need the the photos, photos were not backed up, not on the SD, and USB Debuggin I believe was off. I tried to connect the phone to 3 different PCs and with different cables, but the pcs do not allow me to see the phones camera folder.

Based on what you say, you have another Note 3. So its easy to replace the Display Assembly (glass+digitizer+frame) and backup the data and again replace them back.
Don't try to remove Glass and Digitizer alone, do it with frame... There are tutorials in Youtube.

I had just recently got this phone, its been 2 months exact and yesterday this happened. It was upside down when it rolled over it (was on the road), I was surprised to know that its back merely seems damaged (see pictures to have better idea).
- Speaker seems to be working fine. (SIM working in it!)
- LED indicator is blinking too and working as it should.
- It turns on/off without any problem.
- The power and volume buttons are also working fine.
I had lock screen passcode on so can't access the data, but it connects to computer fine. I wonder if replacing the display and screen digitizer will be the only things I need to make it work.
PS : I had no screen protector/back case or anything on it.
EDIT 1 : Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones.

I just disassembled it, apart from one thing everything in there seems intact, it may require soldering.

oouuchhhh... i think changing the digitizer and and front glass is all you need in the case.. wish you had a tampered glass..

Don't think a tempered glass would've saved his phone from a truck lol. I'm impressed by how little damage it took actually

If you had usb debugging enabled, you can completely remove the lockscreen and access your data. There is a reddit post detailing how to do it step by step. Please Google because I don't have a bookmark. I did this to my Z3 when i got damaged. If you didn't have USB debugging enabled, you'll have to find some hack to do that before attempting.
Also replacing the screen and maybe the digitizer (if damaged) should get your phone back up and running.

Hey if USB debugging was not enabled, you might have to find a way to do it. And I did try doing some Google search but couldn't come across anything! Really sorry but the thread was on Reddit and you should probably search for it there. I'm not sure of the exact keywords I used!
Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones. I can try entering the pattern now, but I don't remember if I had to like swipe after pressing the power button or double tapping the screen or it was just the code straight away after pressing the power button or tapping the screen, could someone please help me with the two options as how they work and also just send screenshot of the lock screen with pass code on so I have the idea about it and all?
EDIT : @thedisturbedone : I managed to pull the lock away as touch screen is working haha!
Is there anyway possible that I can use it via PC? Asus PC link requires the app running in background. Also anyway possible to backup the contacts now?

Hey there, thanks for sharing...been away on Thanksgiving. You want to save your data? Hmm...good question. Here's what I would try to do:
- Contacts should be backed up in Google - so no worries there...you can access via. http://contacts.google.com I think
- Connect the phone to PC, Install ASUS PC Link. You should have the app running on the phone.
- I would then try to drag all the files you need to your computer,
- Or the other thing you can do is if the information is crucial....And I don't promote doing this, and this is not an official ASUS fix...because you will void your warranty..sooo anything issue that happens is on you and ASUS will not help you if something goes wrong...is to root your device, install Titanium Backup, and use that to save all your data (apps and everything) into Google Drive, or Dropbox. Then, you can restore that data back to your phone when it's fixed.
What about micro USB to HDMI and then follow on the big screen what you're doing?

I have recovered the data from the phone itself, the remaining things are notes/contacts which I can't do via connecting the phone to PC now and I had backed up contacts already so no worries.
Haven't read the whole thread, not sure what your plans are, but thought I'd share a recent experience.
My wife knocked her phone off a table at a restaurant a few weeks ago. Landed on the corner when it hit the tile floor. Screen shattered. Was still usable, but bits of glass were flaking off.
I ordered her a new screen & digitizer from amazon. Took about 3 weeks to show up. I replaced it using a plastic spudger tool I had from an old iPhone screen replacement kit, and some patience. The screen replacement kit I ordered came with some double sided tape to reseal everything. Took about 90 minutes to complete as I was taking my time. The replacement went flawlessly and you can't even tell her screen has been replaced. I'd recommend trying that before replacing the phone, unless you want to.

Hi Guys,
I recently broke my Galaxy S4 Gt-I9500's screen and it isn't working at all. I just want to know if I could take my phone's screen on my PC. I'm rooted via phh's superuser and installed Mobizen for Samsung. When I connect my phone to pc it shows as removable device from Samsung. Can I get to know what part of phone is broken LCD display or motherboard. It doesn't even blink the notification LED. No screen OR should I restore stock ROM to check if there was a fault in OS. Please help.

If your screen doesn't turn on then it is a screen problem.
Why does LED doesn't blink? It's separate or not from screen.

You should do more research, otherwise you might buy the wrong thing.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a Super AMOLED screen, not an LCD. Completely different things, like day and night.
And digitizer = the actual screen.
The thing you're always touching is just a glass screen, it has nothing to do with the images displayed on your phone. That's why, when the glass cracks, your phone still works.
Be cheaper to buy a used s4
If you're going to replace the digitizer, you should know that getting a complete replacement for the display is a much better option. The digitizer and AMOLED display are bonded together. To separate them requires a lot of heat, a lot of patience, and a very steady hand. One misstep and the AMOLED display will be destroyed.
Cough up the cash for an entire display, or do what @russy23 recommends and purchase a used S4.
