Screen lines and unlocking static - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So over the last few months I've developed issues where my screen will randomly get a few lines here and there after unlocking or rebooting, but nothing major, until today... After a reboot it's happened the worst I've ever seen it and it's worrying me now, I'm hoping someone can give me an idea if it's the lcd going bad or something else since I've never experienced this with a phone before, I know it's hardware because it doesn't show up in screen shots. Though it always goes away after another reboot. (for now)
Ive also started noticing when unlocking the screen theres a few milliseconds of static(or "noise") like a TV without cable.
I have a battery coming so I will be opening it up in the next few weeks and I'm hoping that's not gonna make things worse, but who knows it could fix it. I think I would be willing to put the effort into a lcd replacement if it's necessary. Any input would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

This is like typical moto x style bug or hw issue, static after unlock and different screen artefacts are common on this model. https://www.androidauthority.com/moto-x-pure-display-driver-issue-687393/ They never fixed this, it's still there on 7.0. It can look in many different ways, I've seen few on mine like white stripes, washout colors or half broken dispaly and it always goes away after reboot. The only penament fix is to sell/throw away this crap and never buy motorola again xd

Ah, I wasn't really expecting it to be a normal thing. I will say the issues I have with this phone seem to be consistent with everyone else. But unfortunately this is "crap" is actually the longest lasting phone I've ever had sadly, but I definitely feel I've got my money's worth out of it.
Thanks for the reply.

Already onto my 2nd Hero. Dead pixels et al

Folks,
After complaining to T-mobile UK about the gap at the top of my G2's screen and a couple of dead pixels (see thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=542534) they kindly sent me another within 3 days. Unfortunately though this one has no gap (thanks) there are now 3 noticable dead pixels on the screen (most noticable on startup at t-mobile splash screen).
I just want to know if anyone else has had this problem and get a bead on what others are doing about it. Problem is now I have already had a swap out these guys are now saying the policy is to bring the phone into a t-mobile store and have it sent off to be checked which to me is TOTALLY unreasonable as the handset is supposed to be brand new.. ARRRGGGHH!!! Am I just being REALLY over the top? Should I just have to put up with the dead pixels??
i suppose it really does just depend on how bad they are.
I know you would just be on the edge of HTC's policy on pixels...they usually won't touch anything under four unless they're really obvious
Hmm.. Well there is one which is REALLY noticable during the startup and less so during operation. The other two are not quite as obvious during startup and practically invisible during normal ops. Thing I really want to know is whether or not this is common among users of this phone and they are just living with it as it doesn't really affect the use of the phone or is it just me that this is happening with?
People. If any of you are out there especially if you are on a UK t-mobile contract could you please try switching off your phone then switching it on and check you screen while the splash screen loads and see if you notice any dead pixels or see if you can get a black background and check.
I would be reluctant but prepared to put up with this if it were something which was the norm for the majority of new G2 handsets and really dont want to keep swapping my phone only for the dead pixels to be more noticable on the replacement. I guess it's just a peace of mind in numbers thing.
with current LCD technology, the odd dead pixel here and there is fairly normal, but thankfully not as wide spread as it used to be.
I've not seen any on the ones i have seen, and never had a dead pixel on the HTC built devices i have personally owned (going back to 2003/4), although my one and only PSP, which i bought the day it was released, had a crap load of them and was sold very soon afterwards!
I don't think it is particularly widespread to be honest, but there will always be one or two devices in a run that get a dodgy pixel or two.
have you checked the market to see if there is a pixel conditioning app? I'm sure i saw one somewhere. They don't always work, but it cant hurt to try...sometimes they come unstuck after a while.
oh, and i also have a t-mobile one. None on mine.
Dude.. Fortunately the only guy responding to this post is a guy who is being as helpful as you I can;t say I am even aware that pixel conditioning apps exist.. I'll have a look.
be lucky, i'm actually in a good mood at the moment! i guess it's the prescription painkillers i'm on (legitimately i might add...i'm not some sort of addict) overriding my natural hatred and grumpiness of being at work on a weekend....god bless opiates!
i've already pissed someone here off this morning before they kicked in!!
I bought a sim free Hero from Mobilefun. I'm now on my THIRD Hero due to replacing the last 2. The current one and first didn't have any screen issues but the second one did. As soon as i swithced it on, big bright spots. Sent it back straight away of course, as this is unacceptable.
The current one has a minor cosmetic flaw but I'm keeping it this time
Don't worry about being OTT about this. You pay a lot of money, you want something top notch.
Edit: Incidentally, Mobilefun customer service is the best I've experienced. Both handsets were replaced and in the palm of my hand again within 48 hours!

I have a t-mobile contract hero, I can't see any dead pixels on the splash screen.
There is a tiny gap at the top (ie you can see some copper if you hold it at the right angle to a bright light, but It seems to be the same as all around the rest of the screen and so it doesn't really worry me.
Dude.. As far as the gap in the screen goes there SHOULDN'T be one. I had one on the last handset and changed mine. As I explained this one has some dead pixels but the gap is gone. I repeat it should NOT be there. All manner of dust and debri will eventually get stuck in there and on the underside of the display I am sure. If you can change it I certainly would. I think I will be attempting to change mine again (sigh)
definitely should not be a gap.
my first one does not have one, i'm waiting to see what the state of the second one is when i get home this afternoon. i hope it's ok.
I have a dead pixel as well in the top left corner but it's only noticeable on the startup screen so I don't mind. It's actually quite common with LCDs, my girlfriends iPhone has a couple and I've had phones in the past with some. You can google nearly any phone and find people dead pixels..palm pre, iphone 3gs, blackberry etc. You can return it but then you run the risk of getting a phone with other issues or more dead pixels.
my HTC Hero has 3 dead pixels but they dont bother me at all .

You know i thought i had dead pixels at startup under the hero word, but when i loaded a pixel fixer app to check the dead pixes by cycleing different colours on the screen nothing showed im convinced the start up animation is glitched and makes it look like dead pixels!! get the app and check!!
I have a dead pixel too and mailed to the company from where i bought it. I mean, did pay a lot of money for it, 440€, so i expect a device wich has no dead pixels or gaps at all!! .
Let you know how things go.
cheers
I have 3 dead pixels on the startup screen one in the very top right. I don't notice them when the phone is in normal operation. if I get anymore I will be tempted to send. it back.

Sorry, now back to the topic....
second g2 arrived and no gap or dead pixels on that one either.
Right, I've decided to ring T mobile about replacing my Hero due to the gap. Will it be an issue that it's more than 7 days since I recieved my phone?
T-Mobile will usually try and be funny with anyone requesting the return of a handset after 7 days but just stick to your guns.. The item is faulty but not instantly noticable. If you catch the rigt person you will be ok.. Just try calling back a few times if necessary. I think half the time I get stuff from them I because i hassle them so much.
By the way.. Can anyone recommend a good pixel testing/fixing app??

Weird things about my replacement Imagio

I brought my Imagio in to get a new one under the 30 day worryfree.
The new imagio has a much less sensitive screen and oddly enough, it displays the battery up in the taskbar.
I figured it was worth sharing.
Also, does anyone have any tips on how to improve screen sensitivity? My last one was amazing.
I would do a hard reset. I got a replacement and the screen would not automatically turn off. After a hard reset all was great. Little quirks sometimes happen.
thanks, ill give that a try. i dont believe the phone to be defective because im noticing small improvements in the new one. a crisper sound, less light leak from around the screen and just a sturdier feel. while i have your attention what is your calibration data? im trying to figure out the ideal values.
I am just using the defaults, I have not made any adjustments.
I did a hard reset and changed my PressureThreshold to 900. I changed my PanGestureDistanceThreshold to 80. Everything is working to my liking now.

where do you get to these settings? somewhere in the registry i guess, sorry for my ignorance
I really think the first set of phones that were available had problems, I had mine replaced and the battery is so much better. There was slight light leakage at the buttom ofthe screen on the first phone, none on the second.
Weird
i agree, i think the first wave had some issues. it'd make sense. this second one is working so much better.
to find these setting youll want to go to...
HKLM>DRIVERS>TOUCHPANEL and youll see Pressurethreshhold
as for the the other...
HKLM>HARDWARE>DEVICEMAP>TOUCH and youll see PanGestureDistanceThreshold
The second path i listed is also where you will find calibration data.
I use PHM RegEdit.
If anyone knows some more about reg tweaks that affect the screen please share!

When I got my original and my recent warranty replacement I noticed the screen was almost "sticky" and hard to swipe and it went away after a day of use.
Someone else I know just got one and their didn't work right out of the box and needed a hard reset and then it was OK. That of course makes no sense to me.
I ordered mine the day they became available. I don't know if I can explain it but it ran pretty poorly (sluggish performance) but after a hard reset it seemed to clear up any problems. What prompted you to replace it?
There is a slight gap between the screen and the buttons that some light does leak out of. Is this cause for concern or just cosmetic? (Seeing as how I'm more or less locked into this phone for the next 2 years.)
I also am wondering the same thing.
I posted a thread on the other forum wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the screen gap.
I love the phone and noticed all of the stores demos are perfect without the gap.
Wondering if I should replace, deal with with the cosmetic annoyance or worry about the long term effects?????

I'm calling for a warrantee replacement today, I just can't take it any more. I really like this phone, but boy does the build quality suck.
its purely cosmetic no worries. i have the same gap and have heard lots of people report the same light leak in the location. its completely normal. unless you notice the the light leak becomes more severe or your screen gets a little bit of rippling (both of which i HIGHLY doubt will ever happen) you have nothing to worry about.
also, i noticed the same thing with the screen almost being "sticky". im not sure what it is, but i either adjusted to it or it went away
its not possible for them to seal in all light. the chief concern is making sure dust and moisture cant seep in. the screen is sort of like a big button in this respect. around every button there is light leak.

My first Imagio did not have any light leaking/bleeding around the edge, my replacement does. So I do have to disagree with you that there is no way around it. It may be purely cosmetic, but cosmetics is a factor in purchasing a phone. Otherwise we would all buy ugly Moto phones. So while I know for some people they will deal with it, I am calling V to get an exchange.

Possible switch Gnex > N4. Issues still?

Hi guys, thinking of finally taking the plunge and convert, from Sammy to Ally :highfive: However, I keep reading about all the issues, regarding throttling and yellow tint/ spots, etc and this causes me to worry. My Gnex has always been great, built in July '12, white and grey values have been great throughout. I'm wondering, many revs further, if LG finally tackled all the known issues. Perhaps with the new white version it's finally taken care of? About the yellow tint, if it appears will it EVER disappear or will it get back every time the phone heats. Since glue heats, cools down and then reheats again?
What issues? The majority of the "issues" you see are OCD, whiny crybabies that try to find the stupidest, most insignificant **** wrong with their phone.

Not sure if serious. There were actually some major issues regarding these yellow spots/yellow hue on the display. Legitimate reasons actually to send phones back to LG. My question still remains, are these aforementioned issues still present?

I've had my N4 for a few weeks now, and notice no yellow spots/hue or anything hardware-related wrong with it.
Edit: Haven't noticed any throttling either (wasn't really looking for it), but to be fair, I don't put my N4 under any kind of stress for the most part (gaming is done on my N10).
I have to agree. I have not seen any of these issues and niether has a buddy of mine that got an older one from CL (mine is a new one)
many of the issues were blown out of proportion and are non issues. some if the issues are rare, chances are that you will never run into them nor anyone you know will run into them. and some of the issues really are just people not knowing any better.

I have had my N4 for about 3 weeks and my only problem is that when I have an app that has a white background in the upper left corner there are several spots that are whitre than the rest of the screen i don't really mind otherwise the phone has been great only other issue is not waking up from charging over night (only has done this once or twice) and sometimes the screen won't come back on after a call but this only happened once. If you do get it make sure to get 16gb version for plenty of space.

Weird screen flickering

Hello,
This is my first post in this part of XDA.
My wife has an s7 Edge and the screen started flickering. I got out of this state messing with the power buttons etc. Mainly getting the touch screen to unlock the phone and it somehow cleared right up.
Is this a software issue? The screen when it came back is working as usual when I restarted the phone it became crap again.
Im think it maybe the lock screen causing this, I never heard of parts being corrupted.
I've attached a little clip of the screen.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

I have never seen this happen before. If I were you I'd flash a new ROM on it in Odin and if it still happens take it to the Verizon store.

Forgot to mention, it's not rooted completely stock.
So screen is messed up?
I had this issue. My phone fell from less than a foot off the ground and landed on the corner. Barely any force, but after that the screen would flicker intermittently. For a day or two it would come and go, and then it became permanent. It looked exactly like yours. If your bootloader/recovery/download mode flickers then it is a hardware problem, since the ROM isn't even loaded yet. With Verizon, your phone is fully covered from manufacturing defects for one year, so you should be able to get it replaced. Sorry bro. Wish I had better news.

Honestly with a screen issue like that, I really recommend taking it to the Verizon store and asking them about it. It seems like a hardware issue to me but that's just my opinion.
My screen has done some weird things as well fresh out of the box. I would have random areas of the screen pixelize until I smack the back of the phone. Even after root It will randomly do it every other month. My father in law had the same exact issue you're having. He brought it into T-mobile where the screen literally failed and went black in the employees hand. Neither his or my phone has ever been dropped. This is definitely a hardware issue. It's almost like a bad connection between the LCD and main board. Make verizon get you a new one before the screen goes black!
Okay...
Is it okay to say I can get a new screen and do that repair myself?
I wanna make sure that the issue I am having is just "buy a new screen and be good to go".
Thanks for your time!

screen retention (ghosting)

Anyone having issues with ghosting on there v20?? Any fix if so r is it Rom related. In on vs995 weta Rom 5.0.7 7.0
I'm starting to have issues with image retention on mine.
I'm stock unrooted.
I wonder if this is covered under warranty.. it's not super annoying but still.
I am having a curious issue with the second screen. Under bright light or sunlight, the top right corner of my screen starts to flicker. Well, the brightness increases and decreases. At the beginning quite slowly and then at a higher pace. However, when I'm indoors it doesn't seem to happen, or at least not too foten.
I've tried with and without automatic brightness. I have also tried installing Lux and the issue still persists.
What I realised is that the flickering comes from the backlight of the second screen, and if I disable it, problem solved. I might Have to give it a hard reset and hope is not a hardware problem.
Has anyone experienced the same?
I posted something similar a while ago on this topic. On my left side of the screen I could see what seemed to be screen burn or something. It would be a yellowish tint that would display the keyboard and part of a screen from the app. But it seemed to be the same app everytime. I never found a solution, I had to turn the phone in for a different reason. The ffc just stopped working and would freeze my phone up.

I haven't tried to take the phone to see if it can be fixed, but I have done some research and after reading many posts of people having either the G4,V10 and V20 most have been honored under warranty having their screens replaced but the problem comes back, some people claim having their screens more than one time.
I think I can live with it.. I don't wanna risk having the phone scratched or damaged somehow by the person making repairs (I like to keep my phones in mint condition) and I have a Huge OCD problem lol
I think joining XDA is an indicator of having a degree of OCD
Although I'd class mine as low I'd not be happy with the retention exhibited in those pics.
Thankfully my V20 hasn't presented any inherrent problems so far, just the odd temporary ones that happen when modding, but they're soon remedied.
Since @emdroidle gave us root for the H990ds its been great having the chance to open it up and explore more of its potential.

As far as I've read this is just a quirk of these LCD screens that LG uses on their phones. It should go away pretty quick as the only time mine shows up like that is when the screen brightness is all the way or very bright for like 5 or 10 minutes. Mine goes away after 5 or 10 minutes.
Download sfilter from play store activate it at 10 % and image ghosting will go away ?

I was looking into the Warranty as well and just read that it can take up to 4 weeks to inspect and repair a unit, so no mobile for maybe 4 weeks or more and I'm not even sure they will accept the retention as a fault of the mobile itself, but give me the blame for it as there are some minor surface scratches from normal daily use.
So it seems the warranty is pretty much to the bin and reading stories from others about sending there phones with issues does not really make me want to send it back either. Who knows how long, and if declined giving me the blame, what a waste of time it has been. feel like iv Wasted enough time already.
They told me to make a full factory reset, which would of cause not solve the issue at all as I already knew - but I did it and sent the video of the retention afterwards - then I was told to look for scratches and I send them a video and 2 pics of what I could find and now being pointed out that maybe if they find out it is from damage that it just might be send back. Damage... Got to give me a break.
I'm not even sure what they would do with it if they accept the fault - would they begin to toy around with it or would they send me a new phone out of the box.
Is it worth it or not... I'm thinking...
For a +500 Euro phone - retention/ghosting should not happen and yet it does. First phone I ever experiences this issue.
I think I'm on the Whine wagon at the moment, sorry guys - just a little annoyed.

I did ended up replacing my phone, not under LG warranty though I paid 60 bucks to Sprint to get it swapped. I thought it was better than sending out my phone to LG and wait weeks..
Convenience was the what made me toss the 60 bucks for a new unit.
Though a month later I switched to T-Mobile and upgraded to the V30+
They paid the rest of my installments with Sprint which was half the cost of 2 V20's and also got to keep them.
I use my V20 as a multimedia device now.

Nice - seems like I'm not going to get much from the warranty on the screen issue and still not sure if I should send it back as I'm afraid they do something stupid to it. Well, if my phone melted down at some point I would still buy an V20 in replacement. Battery and SD card is just a win for me even with all the phones faults. Just so sad that LG did not fix a better screen for the V20 in regards of getting Ghosting/Retention.
Anyway - I just tried one of the fixes I found without jail breaking the phone and it does help a little but far from solved the issue at all. I have ghosting/retention all over the screen now and most likely just going to get worse over time as it has from the beginning of it.
I think the image retention is a bug. It randomly happens on mine. At first I thought it was a crappy screen but then it went away. It will even show dark image retention like using xda. And most of my retention around the inside 1/4 of the screen.

Sadly did not work here. Still have ghosting. 20% won't do either - il try 30%.
Ok I was getting ghosting which has been getting worse and wore the past month but in the past 2 weeks its been getting really bad on both displays, ontop of that my phone was dying in 20-25% range and going up to 100% charge just to drop like 10 minutes later to like 50% probably just the battery idk
I sent my phone in and here is what they marked on the warranty page
Symptom: Software failure
Repair: Download new software
I honestly hope they don't think its because I wasn't on the latest version of android because I kept putting it off or i'm gonna be pissed, especially since my warranty ends 3/18/2018 and these 2 issues have slowly been getting worse.
Hi!
Here is a working fix if your device is rooted.

so is this an LG LCD specific issue ? I am just curious when I switch phones should I consider AMOLED / OLED or stick with LCD but maybe a different vendor ?

The culprit behind this is low contrast with high blue-output or cooler color temperature. If you are rooted, you can easily tone down the blue channel by a count of 20 (out of 256) and all is good. Also you don't have to use the phone as maximum brightness all the time, the screen itself is way too bright even for the least level.
2ndly, this ghosting is temporary and develops over time of use. It goes away for LCD.
OLED screens suffer from the permanent ghosting aka burn-in, though its coming over time is delayed by quality and improvement of the manufacturing process. Honestly, OLED's have higher saturation, more vibrance, higher contrast which makes them appeal to human eye but it comes at a cost.

Oh cool. thanks for explaining that! I am not rooted... 1. too nervous of causing issues after root .. 2. mine isn't rootable (on most recent security patch)..
so is there anything I can do to help with the blue output?
