Hi, can't remember the last time I needed any help with a phone till now.
I used to love the old Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, then went to Motorola's, and my current phone is a Moto X Play that my contract is almost up on. It's getting old, beat up, and slow.
As I've been looking for a new phone the LG G6 and V30 have really jumped out at me. As I know nothing of the LG brand I've tried to look up as much information as possible about these two models. The same concern has me worried on both models, and that being the screen quality.
On one hand you have the LG G6 which has an LCD screen which appears to still have a lot of image retention issues. So while these may go away I don't think I could live with the issue.
On the other hand, the V30 has an OLED screen which are prone to burn in, degradation over a shorter period of time.
After all my ramblings, my question is this...
How wide spread are the issues with LG LCD screens image retentions, and are the LG P-OLED screens that fragile that I have to be careful not to use it very often?
I've seen both in person, and the demo models both look great. Originally I was going for the V30, but the Pixel 2 issues, and inherent OLED issues got me thinking of the G6 only to find out issues about it as well.
I would need to take out a contact for either phone so I would be committed to a 2 year policy with either one, strangely for the same cost.
Any opinions and help would be greatly appreciated.
LG G6 screen is perfect, I haven't had any problems with image retention in the 8 months I have used this phone. The only bad review of the screen is sometimes the bright is not enough outside when the sun hits the display. But the quality of the colours, resolution, etc its perfect in my opinion.
No issues whatsoever with G6 screen. I am comming from OLED in my last 5 smartphones so I can do an informed comparison. No retention, black level is acceptable (of course not AMOLED level), perfect colors and clarity. Perhaps a bit more brightness could help in a very sunny environment. Cannot comment on V30 though.
For me G6's display is finally something I was looking for for a very, very long time... colors are vivid but not overly, contrast could be better but it's not bad, however as mprovi_15 stated - the display could have better brightness as there were some moments when even 100% in direct sun was not enough.
Also I wish it was a little more battery friendly. It's not bad, I usually get 4,5-5hrs SoT but still OLED screens drain less energy.
No word on V30's display, I've seen it only once in the market on demo unit but it seemed really nice. However there are numerous reports of users having various problems with it, just google "LG V30 display issue".
Thanks for the insight. Good to hear that there are at least a few happy G6 owners. I've seen the screens in person, though I wasn't able to go through and test them in low light, or at low brightness settings, both looked great. Yeah the V30 looked better, but it was an OLED so I did expect.
I've just finished reading a 67 page thread about the V30 issues, but similarly there are also a few about the screen retention on the G6. It would even seem the more I look into it almost every manufacturer seems to have the issue to some extent.
I have an LG G5, which I think has the same display as the G6. I have to admit, I was worried when I first came across the image retention problem! I thought my phone was faulty or something. But you can get used to it. There is also a solution for it. I am rooted and using EX kernel manager, and it has a display control section. I found out if I set red, green and blue from the default 256 value to ~246, it pretty much solves the issue. So if you are planning on rooting your device (which I assume you will, that is probably the reason you are on this website in the first place), then I think image retention is not an issue. By the way, my father has the G6, and have never heard a bad word about it's screen, or image retention at all.
About brightness... Do you really use your phone that much in direct sunlight? You can always cover for the screen, by turning away from the sun, thus casting shadow on it. I think this is a problem that people overdramatize.
I am not a fan of LED displays either, for the same reason as you: burn in. I'm not going to buy any LED displayed phones in the future, that's why I am very happy to hear that LG's new flagship will come with a so called MLCD+ display.
At least to begin with I do like to keep my phones stock. I normally only root or modify them if there is a reason to.
For this very issue I decided to grab my old Galaxy S2 and see what the screen looked like as it's an AMOLED. Back then I was a bit naive about what the screens were. Let me tell you it didn't age well, and the screen looks horrible. Obviously the newer LED screens with better resolution will look a lot better, but if they age similar to my S2, I wouldn't want anything to do with them. Even worse yet if they are poor quality to begin with. I still remember the old CRT burn in and how horrible the screens got on those. It's a definite positive for the G6 as it's still LCD, which in part gives me a bit of a shock that the image retention would even be an issue.
Considering that both the V30 and G6 are the same cost on contract, I may wait to at least see what the G7 has to offer. As the tech seems to get more complex, so do the issues encountered.
I can personally tell you this, I've had both the g6 and the v30 sold the v30. Here's why the v30 is EPIC beautiful phone WAY better bluetooth quality that's for DAMN sure. The speaker quality and mic quality were mich better also. The screen 100% looks worth the $$ for sure. It's faster for sure also. The screen just feels better to touch and to view. I used them both side by side for about 30 days. I kept the g6 cause it feels better in hand. I have "average" sized hands for a 5'8" male so that said the v30 with its slight curve did not feel l "safe" in my hand. I did have them both in the spigen slim armor case. Love that case on all phones. Sadly limted colors but for sure nice case. The v30 is better for netflix or extensive YouTube watching. Of course screen size wins. Let alone the daytime visibility goes to the v30. But I feel that yhe LCD of the g6 is great as well and helps keeps photos, even those taken in HDR more realistic liking the PLED of the v30 seemed to over saturate colors even after adjusting it's color settings. The v30 is the better phone. Period. I however choose to keep the g6 cause I liked the way it felt in hand and truly over all the retail value of a barely used v30 with pre installed class screen protector was well worth selling it. Another thing the v30 is VERY hard to get a nice true glass screen protector for.
AMOLED screens become greenish over time (I had Galaxy S5, S5, S6 and S7, all with amoled) and they all have some type of permanent burn in. That types of displays must degrade over some period of time and you can't avoid that. Here on my G6 no problems with the screen from day one. It is like brand new. No image retention or something similar.
I went back and checked the two units on display and did some brightness and display tests. The LG V30 failed miserably. Extreme burn in even though they had a demo mode constantly cycling images and movies, and when put at 0% the screen was very uneven, and there was enough screen flickering that I could notice it.
The G6 seems dimmer than my Moto X Play, but no screen issues noticed. The screen is roughly the same size as my old phone, though at an 18:9 ratio.
Thanks for the help, now on to find a slim case and screen protector for it.

This topic is made so it can help people if they are considering buying this phone because one of it key features which is the screen. So I think it would be great if you could write your opinions and experiences about screen.
I will also express my opinion. No raging allowed, every opinion is equally important and we all have different taste and likes.
Before sharing my opinion, I have to say that reason for me buying wasn't screen at all. What is much more important to me is software functionality, battery life, ergonomics and screen size. I haven't even seen QHD video before I bought and brought this baby home. But when I saw that QHD LG preload video, I just got stunned as every person that gets to see the video on my phone.
In mine opinion the screen is relatively good. It's very sharp without a doubt, everything looks eXtra crisp, much better than any 1080p screen definitely. The colours are bit pale comparing to any other AMOLED screen, but I mostly fixed that issue by manually adjusting colour in Accessibility. I used to have Galaxy S, Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S3, so my eye was "trained by Samsung" for that extreme saturation, strong colours and DEEEP black. Only thing I miss about that AMOLED screen is the black colour, other colours were far too attacking for me, they were like overreacting girlfriend complaining for every minor thing that aren't that important (that's how I see it in my head). On G3 screen and other LCD's probably I prefer more accurate, real world colours. Brightness isn't an issue for me, even though I think that brightness could still go a bit higher than it is right now. I live in Croatia where the days are very sunny and sun is strong and I never had to go over 70% brightness outdoors. Screen on time on "internet warrior" and "antenna overload" days get me to only 4 hours, but on average day I get 5:30h of screen on time. (I'm not heavy user anymore, I always try to save my battery and turn off all antennas and apps that I don't use, also I adjust my brightness manually which varies from 60% in bright enviroment to 20% in dark enviroment). I would say screen on time on single charge is pretty average for flagship phone.
What are you opinions?
Hey everybody. My 32GB Prime arrived yesterday and I'm a little underwhelmed by the screen quality. Compared to my little Jiayu G4S the screen doesn't look great, especially white. Thanks to lolo9393 I was able to read through the thread below and on about the second page there is info about how to discover who made your screen. Even though Xiaomi claimed the screen would be made by Sharp, it looks as though this is not the case for some of us. To test which version you have, open the dialer and enter *#*#6484#*#*. This will open a test app. Tap 'software version' then scroll down to where it says 'LCM'. It would appear mine is made by Tianma which explains a lot.
For those of you who haven't bought your phone yet, I would recommend asking your reseller to test your device first and see which LCD had been used. It sounds like AUO make a better looking panel (edit - or not?)
Here's how my Tianma screened Prime looks next to an Oppo Find 7a. Both are set to Max brightness. The Note 2 display is set to 'cool' in settings which is as blue as it gets. Any of the other settings make it look more yellow. The Oppo is on the left. To the naked eye the Oppo doesn't have the pink tint that you see in the photo.
*update* I thought I'd take another photo of my screen after two weeks and three different ROMs. Now I'm using the most recent multi language development ROM from 11th September. Same scenario as before, both screens are set to maz brightness, Opposed find 7a on the left. The XRN2 is set to 'cool' in settings and reading mode is off. Looks a little bit whiter than before to my eyes, but perhaps that's just wishful thinking. Either way my cheapo Jiayu G4S looks better than both. Shame the GPS doesn't work on the Jiayu!

Same here, me and a friend checked it, and both we have the Tianma screen. Both phones are 16GB version.

That's annoying. On the one hand, I guess it's common for manufacturers to use parts from different suppliers, but the phone has to only just been launched and Xiaomi made a point of bragging about using a Sharp screen. I think it's dishonest. I don't think I can return the phone to the reseller because it's not really their fault. My Jiayu G4S was just as cheap and has a much nicer screen.
Uhh. Does it really look that bad? I have ordered a Redmi Note 2. Hope that its screen is manufactured by Sharp.
For what I paid for this device, I think the Tianma screen (yes, I checked) on my device is fine. I think of this as an intermediary device as I dropped my old phone and needed one ASAP and in August this was the best thing on the market, for me it is a great intro to Xiaomi and I will wait to see what the Mi5 reviews are like when it is launched.
Do you have the TDD, FDD or GSM version?
Thank you!
Does anyone found a SHARP one, or they are all Tianma???

Yeah, I'm wondering about the same thing. Which versions have Tianma screen - all 16GB (not Prime) versions, or just the GSM version? Or is it completely random?
In a Russian video review a guy said that he had yellow tint with the GSM version, and that the display is better on LTE version (I don't remember which one was it though).

I have the 32GB Prime LTE version, and it has the Tianma screen. It's not awful, and considering the SoC I guess it's where they've saved money. If I hadn't just owned two Chinese cheap phones with better screens, I wouldn't have been any the wiser.
If I had a way to contact Xiaomi directly I would ask them to replace the phone, purely on principle.
One benefit of this screen is that it is softer on the eyes at night if you're reading in bed.
I might not be able to do it for a day or so, but when I get a chance I will try to take a photo of the difference between devices to show you.
Again, it's not terrible by any means, it just didn't meet my expectations.
Okay, thank you for your reply.
However, in this screenshot it looks like the other way around.

Tianma screen is blueish, but definitely looks better than AUO. Or could it be just about the Color Temperature setting in MIUI?
To my eyes the 'standard' setting looks creamy/yellow and the the 'warm' setting looks very pink/yellow. I set it to 'cool' immediately and it looks kind of OK, but it lacks 'pop'. I you were to put it next to a 2013 Nexus 7 it wouldn't look very good at all. Maybe tomorrow evening I'll try to mirror my screen to the TV and take a photo of the difference.
Viewing angles are good by the way. There is some 'crush' in videos and on the home screen wallpaper for me. I think it really will depend in what you're used to as to whether you like it or not.
This's the "old" news in China's forum, NONE of the screen is provided by SHARP
All the provider are from Tianma(85%)/AUO(15%) the number is the chance you will get.
There's also the rumor in China that Xiaomi never claimed they will use SHARP/AUO in screen, but actually, some of the people found that there's some evidences shows there's a slogan on their official site before selling.
And some of the people said Xiaomi break the rule in China's market with its super low price to force all the mobile manufacturer to lower their price. So some of the manufacturer edit the picture and spread the rumor that Xiaomi cheated consumers.
This is still a mystery because Xiaomi never apologize to this event but make good a loss
to the consumers a 5000 mAh power bank if you buying from their official recognized online shop, Tmall.com and JD.com.
I think Redmi Note 2 is released in the short time that the engineer in Xiaomi did't even tune it completely. The first or second wave who get the phone complaining the tint is too yellow compare to others. But if you are worry about the yellow tint, you can OTA to the latest stable version of MIUI or by FlashTool.
Don't forget MediaTek have the new technology, MiraVision™ which can easily tune the tint of screen color. By the latest stable ROM(6.7.5.0 Stable), Xiaomi also fix the unresponsive touchpannel by upgrading the driver of CTP from T2.0 to T2.3.
In short, you'll never get any screen from Sharp but mostly from Tianma and likely from AUO.
I have both LG G4 and N2 16gb, the Tianma screen isn't all that bad, although I see some slight bleeding that the bottom, but I can live with it, it is my seconardy/gaming phone afterall
I just got the phone. It has Tianma screen, but it looks good.
I'm pleased you like it I guess it just depends what screen each of us is used to. Sadly I've just come from a very 'white' looking screen (not sure if that makes sense).
I also just tweaked things manually using the Miravision app to get it more to my liking.
The screen on my phone looks very good, don't care who is the manufacturer of it, but i just checked and it is Thianma. I even compared it to calibrated with custom kernel Nexus 6, and still looked good.

That's interesting. I wonder if some are better than others. If not I must have really weird eyes, although the difference with the other phones in my household is very pronounced.
I checked and also got a tianma screen. It doesn't look too bad. I compared it to the xperia z2 (which has a pretty average screen though I think) and it wasn't really any worse. Maybe very slightly more faded at max brightness.
I'm more concerned about how much battery this thing uses. I've only had the phone for a few days but it hasn't seemed that great. Although the automatic brightness sometimes feels erratic and made the screen too bright.
Also I think I got some scratch already on mine. It's not visible if I wipe the screen clean so just need to do that and apply the screen protector that came with the phone. But I suppose no gorilla glass here!

Sorry to hear you have a scratch already I better hurry up and buy a screen protector for it. So far I only have a gel case to cover the back.
I'm not getting great battery life either, but I've only had a few battery cycles so far. Perhaps it will improve. My little Jiayu G4S also had a very good battery life which may mean my expectations are set quite high.
I'm not sure, but I think my screen may actually be getting whiter over time. Perhaps I'm just getting used to it!
my screen is scratched on day 2 as well in my pants too. Definitely not Gorilla glass.
Hi guys,
Anyone else notice any uneven screen backlighting? I read forums on the v20, and when reading back text on white background - while scrolling down to read more text I notice dark shades on the screen. I downloaded screen test and lo and behold...dark patch on my screen! I then sent it back to LG and assured me that they replaced the screen module and tested it and all 'voltage' was normal - BUT, dark shades were still present albeit in a different spot!
Can someone here please confirm if this is a normal thing for LG screen as I realise it is LCD backlit and not OLED hence a few bleeding / inconsistency of backlight would be present. Even though I have never experienced this on ANY of my HTC's which were all LCD screens.
cheers guys! sorry for the long post!
Yes, i have it too! H910 variant. Two dark/dim spots that run horizontal from edge to edge. Can be more noticeable/annoying in landscape view than portrait actually.
Exchanged one brand new H910 for another. Same problem. Both manufactured 12/16. Havent had this on any other LG Ive owned (RS988 G5, D850 G3, P930 Nitro HD) or Moto for that matter. Pretty bummed to have this in an $830 USD device.
Edit...seems like the issue can be excaberated by different viewing angles. Also, totally anecdotal, but i looked at my display at a stoplight (wearing polarized shades) and i noticed the screen looked unaffected by the shades compared to other LCDs (cars TFT nav screen, an eIPS tablet, etc) that i have in the car. Wonder if what we are seeing is some type of side effect from a polarizing filter, or maybe lack of, used with this display/panel?
Or, maybe these things are edge-lit and LG used an uneven arrangement of emitters. Not really sure.
Good call...I do think it may be the backlight being edge lit! which could only mean (maybe) the backlight has failed at some spots or LG engineers mis-formulated where to put the lighting. it is very sad to hear that this may not be an isolated problem.
I did however sent it back for repair and the technician advice of a NEW LCD module/screen fitted. was sent back to me the same day!! WOW! BUT...same problem but it a different spot.
If this keeps going I may have to consider a new device altogether!
Then im starting to hear crackling on both earpiece and speakers....but thats a different thread!
arrgg...
I began to notice this on my v20 that I bought at the end of December, at first I thought it was just viewing angle or I messed up the screen. However my mom just got a v20 and hers' has the exact same problem in nearly the same spot. I should add that my phone is an LS997 that is completely stock. Also @D0NZ which screen test application did you use to see the problem better?
I used an app called full screen test...its free and simple. I then took a photo of it with my old htc m8 then sent it to lg for review.
The V10s have this as well. Something to do with the backlight and 2nd screen. Kind of got used to it on my V10. Was hoping that would have been addressed with the build of the V20.

I think so. On the V10 it was really noticeable when the main screen went into immersive mode and the 2nd screen went off.

this to me is a deal breaker! I read a lot on my phone, tis why I got a large screen! If this is the 'norm' for a flagship...
I pretty much think its unacceptable. They produce their own screens and cant get a flagship right? hmm...which phone to replace it with now that is available locally (for me that is down under)
So here are some pics I sent LG originally!

Looking at your grey screen, those bands/dim areas are in the exact same locations on my device (and my prior V20)! It must be inherent to this panel. You said the bands/dim locations changed after LG swapped screens/devices for you though?
Either way, it is a bummer. I'm still undecided if I should return mine as well, or just live with it. Almost every recent device has some quirk to live with it seems. I recently traded a Samsung Galaxy S7 that had a beautiful AMOLED display, but the device picked up scratches (on the display *and* body) like I've never seen before. I even took a look over at the dark side (Apple), and they seem to be catching flak for overheating and camera problems in some iPhone 7 devices. Sigh.
I have it on one corner pretty bad, is this because of the IPS screen and how the frame of the phone is pressing on it?

I think its to do with backlight distribution tbh. Ive had a number of HTC's and NONE of them had backlight distribution issues. Im now wondering IF a 3rd party screen module would be better than the original LG produced? OR...if this is an isolated issue only on some devices. My device was manufactured Nov 2016. Maybe a later produced model has better screens? Anyone with a newer produced V20 care to share?
I think its the placement of the 2nd screen backlight. Ill try to find the thread. Someone with a V10 explained it last year.

Here is the post I remember from the V10 forums that seem to make the most sense regarding backlight being uneven.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64236798&postcount=45
Both my replacement V20 and original V20 have uneven screen backlighting (at least the replacement has a better back cover mechanism). There is a dark spot in the middle of the status bar on white (or lighter) screens. What is weirder is that it is the exact same pattern and location as the first one. It is present in both stock and LOS. I suppose I'll just wait around a year and warranty it out then because I just want to start using the phone. I included an image for people that were curious how it looked.
^
I think I can live with that...as in...the dim sections are on the edge of the screen. Mine was in the middle of the screen which i cannot stand!
I have sent the replaced screen NOT to LG but to the place where I bought it.
They said that the repairer that LG told me to send it to was the last on their system as 'reliable'. The store said that they will deal with the repairer and LG. I kind of hope the worst happens and they just offer me a refund or a total replacement - but I doubt that would happen!
UPDATE: so i sent it back to jb hifi, on the report, they can replicate the issue. On the repairers report - they couldnt
SO i get it back with all the 'test' that they have done on it being to manufacturer's specs.
Which i think now...was never good to begin with
Too bad i cant unsee what i can see...sux...I wonder if AMOLEDs have these issues? Anyone care to elaborate?
I have this issue with my LG V20 -- only when viewing photos
I have this issue with my LG V20 -- only when viewing photos - see photos -- screen has two long bright lines.
See attached photos - lines are not on the photos themselves --it is just in the backlighting -- and the lines are not there when viewing websites or if testing the screen with an test app. Please cut ans paste links to see photos - remove blank area after http -- I can't post links till I have 10 posts on this site - if any kind poster could repost so others can see them that would be great!

I have the same issue below secondary screen. Only noticeable on white background. Doesn't ruin reading books, it's there, but minor. I have dual sim variant. I'd be very upset if I paid launching price. All those things you only find out when you get the device.
So far this has been the best mobile device I have ever owned from Palm, to BlackBerry, Motorola, iPhone, Samsung, Nexus, Asus. This has also been the best OS I have used to date. No lag, no battery drain, no boot loop, and I get a removable battery.
Too many features others lack for the same price with less storage for the same money as the V20.
All that being said there is a problem with this phone that also ocurred with my V10. I keep the screen on at maximum brightness all the time since battery is not an issue with this phone (I have many spare batteries). About 7 months into my V10 I started noticing "ghosting" along the left and right edge of the screen. I use white icons which means I always have a dark wall paper. I could notice a very thin whitish smear along the edges. Its not bleed like you sometimes see on the second screen. What I notice goes away when you turn off the screen a while or you switch to a lighter colored background. Then I started noticing that icons for notifications were beginning to burn into the screen when using a dark background... Very odd because this is almost always an issue with OLED screens and not LCD displays like on the LG phones. Then the screen burn in started occurint on the main screen, typically when a bright image is on the screen for a long time and when switching to a screen image with a dark background the borders of the previous image are still visible on the new image. Once the phone is off for while, again, the retention issue goes away but comes back if the same image is on the screen for more more than 30 seconds or so.
Thankfully This does not affect video playback or video streaming. Its only with digital images, logos, or text.
For those not familiar with this problem its called image retention.
I placed a warranty claim on the V10 and a new phone was sent. I traded in the replacement phone immediatley for the V20. And now only 4 months into ownership the exact same problem is occurring... Grrrreat.
When I called LG about the V10 they had no idea what I was talking about. I pointed out that this issue has been discussed in the forums for the last year.

it will go away its not really screen burn in, lcd's have this issue and its common, turn screen off for 24 hours and let the lcd cool off and the ghosting will go away. The LCD's dont have the same screen burn in that the OLED screen would.. but latent images will occur if your keeping it on non stop and high brightness. IPS at its best.
also try and use the screen burn in app and let it spam the screen with the multi colors overnight, this will help cover the burn in like ghost images.
24 hours? Hmm... I will try 8 hours tops because of obligations I need to be available by phone all the time.
I have had IPS displays before that were on all the time and didnt see this issue before...and I run all my devices into the ground.
My Plasma TV has latency issues, my Samsung AMOLED displays have burn in, Samsung LCDs had vertical banding, this LG IPS display has latency...so which displays are immune from premature (in less than one 12 month) issues?

V10 , V20 , G5's displays ( maybe include G6) are quantum dot IPS so they all meet image retention . Other IPS displays never meet this problem
I noticed this issue on my v20. If the phone remains off for a bit the image goes away. It can be annoying but if it doesn't hurt the phone
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
The screen on the V20 isn't a regular IPS, it's a "quantum dot IPS" which may be more prone to some degree of image retention due to their form of illumination (I don't know a lot about it but it's a kind of atomic luminesence) which supposedly increases colour accuracy and range while lowering the power requirement for for the backlight.
It's possible this might be the root cause of the 'ghosting' but I'm mostly guessing.
Ironic though if QD displays are prone to ghosting, and LG knowingly equipped thier phone with an always-on second screen with that tech.
Yes. I'm on my 2nd replacement for the same issue. The phone I'm typing on is now having it. The screens last anywhere from 6 to 8 months before breaking down.
Glad to see that this isn't only happening to me, I find it super annoying, I never had this happen before on other devices, and it's an unacceptable occurrence that of course nothing will be done about it, I for one can't wait to get rid of the V20.
same thing started happening to my v20 recently, around 4-5 month old phone. it's an annoyance that should happen to a flagship phone, but it looks like we're SOL...

Tilted Pixel lines Problem.
I am also facing same problem with my 3 months old LG V20 Phone.
My phone have one more Problem.
I can see pixel lining (in whole screen) even though it is quad hd display. But the problem is that it is not horizontal, It is tilted 10 degree, and there is no vertical lines that I can recognize . And it is annoying to me.
If the screen is equally pixelated then I should have seen both vertical and horizontal lines of pixel equally like you can see in TV LCD Displays.
I encourage anyone whose 12 month warranty is about to expire to file a claim. And not use the phone at maximum brightness unless outdoors. Luckily I had some other issues with the phone like NFC and the speaker being somewhat distorted and the phone was replaced for those issues as well. If you see any deterioration in any other hardware aspect of your V20 you should definitely file a warranty claim.
I plan to keep this warranty replacement for another year as the only phone with the image quality I like is the Sony Experia XZ Premium which doesn't work with Verizon. Believe it or not I compared the V20 to virtually every new OLED flagship anr they all had a dingy yellowy color compared to the V20, including the new iPhone X. The Sony was the only phone that had both the color accuracy like and LCD but the deep color pop of an OLED. Best of both worlds with the only 4K screen and battery life better than my V20

It is my understanding that the V20 will get image retention, but not actually burn-in. Is this true?
Also, I have searched for solutions to the image retention problem. Most solutions advise the use of apps that cycle through colors or simply leaving the device off for awhile. I used a color cycle app, which helped, but the issue returns. And leaving my device off is, simply put, not an option. I did come across a post about replacing the thermal paste. Any truth to this method?
But I'm wondering, if I go through with taking my phone apart to apply paste, wouldn't it be beneficial to also replace the screen as well? Or am I missing some factor I haven't read about yet?

Once image retention sets in it will return once the screen is on for long enough. I ran those screen burn in apps overnight for months. Made no difference at all. The only option is to completely replace the display if you can get it cheap.

No need to do all that, install Night Screen by paper airplane dev team and set the slider at around 80%(make sure you're on the moon icon). Also let the screen cool off before you do this and set it up. You won't really notice the filter much and all the retention problems will be a thing of the pass.
@porscheoscar - No kidding lol Replacement LCD are not cheap. I'm gonna keep an eye on them cause I want to keep my V20 as long as possible. One of the last phones, that I'm aware of, I can carry an extra battery for. I love switching batteries while my friends with their latest, greatest phones watch their battery percentage like a hawk hehe
@salvichulo - Thanks for the tip ^_^ I installed it & am giving it a workout. I try not to be on my phone a lot, but I'm a gamer ;P Once phones became powerful enough to really game on, I killed my Xbox Live account & game exclusively on my phone. When I get the money I'm gonna look into getting an Android Emulator for my laptop.
A bunch of people are on here saying that they notice this ghosting problem after a few months, and that after that their phone's screen deteriorates rapidly. I just got this phone for Christmas, and I love it, but I noticed this annoying ghosting problem immediately. Should I be worried? I'm a little nervous it's getting worse.
why don't you root your phone? By rooting your phone you can change color setting by using custom kernel it help you with this problem .

I don't really know how to root my phone, it seems complicated, and wouldn't it void the warranty?

Hi everyone...
my operator just offered a limited-time rebate, that lowers G6 cost to just 310 EUR, so i decided to seriously consider it as my Note 4 is on its last legs with its snail-speed EMMC memory which is also a time bomb as it can fail at any moment.
LG G6 is one of the few phones (apart from the Sharp Aquos or Xiaomi Mi Mix) that i actually like...
so i went to a huge department store to test it in real life... and was very disappointed, as the screen looks dull, and text clarity is mediocre. Websites like Android Authority (with gray text) look mediocre too.. Also the store (mediamarkt) was very well lit with lamps, and raising the brightness to max level only made the brightness good enough... well, comparing the LG G6 screen with my note 4 side by side was upsetting, it looked somewhat grayish, and would be clearly a downgrade. The key thing is that it is not crisp.
In the same store were also samsung and huawei demo zones. I understand that LG G6 and Huawei phones have IPS screens... The phone (screen) that I liked very much turned out to be Huawei Mate 9. Huawei P10 was also nice, but Mate 9 screen was the best imho. Unfortunately i recommended a huawei phone to muy friend (it was Huawei Note 8) and now he has tremendous communication delays, whatsapps get delivered sometimes hours later (here users complain about the same problem), so Huawei unfortunately is not an option for me. I was really hoping LG G6 would do, especially at a very decent price of 310 EUR.
I thought maybe it was a defective unit... so i went to another department store nearby that was less lit and also had LG G6 demo zone. It actually had several G6s and they all had that mediocre screens...
Finally i'm afraid i will have to skip that 310 EUR offer which is a pity, i'd love to have a more snappy phone... And in general G6 is very compact and nice...
Wondering what are your impressions from LG G6 screen? I've looked though these forums and see that most people rave about it, which is astonishing. Am i too critical?
I have the (Korean?) H870DS 64GB, Quad DAC version and I am extremely happy with the screen. AMOLED screens may have vibrant colours and black-black, but the colours just don't look natural.
LG G6 has one of the best screens out there, it's got HDR10 display certified too that it almost matches the very best displays like the Galaxy S8, where as IPS Quantum Display in the LG is better than AMOLED is the oranges you see on the AMOLED appear very red , AMOLED are being notorious for over-saturation and longer image retention (screen burn in might be permanent in AMOLED where as IPS the burn in is temporary) LG IPS Quantum Display has excellent whites and more natural colours.
If you are used to seeing life through an over-saturated screen then accurate RGB will seem subdued.
However go into settings on your Note 4 and turn display mode to BASIC and you will see RGB mode on Samsung panels looks very different. Now compare to the G6 ...
Remember Display Mate rate Samsung panels highly based on the 'basic' mode due to colour accuracy and not on Adaptive Display mode they ship with as default.
However if you are fan of the boosted colours then likely only another over saturated AMOLED panel will appease and therefore the G6 isn't for you.

I am happy with the change i have come from an s8 with the screen i have had all the s range all the note range bar the 5 as was not out in the uk and there is not really that much difference part from blacks look really black on samsung phones my whites look white on my g6 unlike my s8 they looked pink/ red if you are not picking you will find faults and the lg ui is more fluid and faster than my s8 not had one bit of stutter or lag on my g6 but had fair bot on s8
No complaints about the G6 screen. This was my first LCD phone is many years (previously S6, S4, S3, and Note 2; plus Galaxy Tab S), so was worried about switching to the G6's LCD. I see the differences when I compare side-by-side, but I don't notice the difference when I use the G6 by itself.
The Huawei you saw at the store might be set to demo/display mode (like TVs) that maximizes brightness and color to levels you probably wouldn't use.
Yes it does have the hdr 10 thing but there is other phones having it but what the lg g6 is the only phone certifed for , is the dolby vision nd it s the only phone till now it does take the hdr thing to another level
No complaints with the screen here, seems just as crisp as my Galaxy S6, with the added benefit of no screen burn. Very happy.

It's more of a personal choice. I find benefits in both superAmoled, and IPS panels. For me, Amoled is better for long time reading, mostly because of true blacks and less backlight emitition (as I use with my tab s3) while for more realistic colors and specially true white, I prefer my G6. It has probably the best IPS panel I've seen by far.
Unrelated, but somehow related to screen experience, my s7 was a fingerprint magnet. G6 oleophobic coating seems to be much better! (At least after a few weeks)

As with most tv content HDR is useless and really really useless during the daytime. This coming from a guy who invested $5k last year on 4k tv and playable equipment. From xbox 1 S. Amazing OLED LG 65" and samsung hdr 4k player
Does anyone use this? It's kinda cool I use it to get a better contrast ratio. Since we don't get screen modes like Samsung does. Been doing it since my g3
Sad ? First of all you should know the difference between amoled and LCD .
An amoled while delivers punchy vibrant colors is actually unreal or artificial colors.
LCD is not punchy but produce Real life colors almost.
Red is red and blue is blue .
Gotta doubt ? Try taking pics of some fruits mixed together and compare them in 2k amoled and 2k LCD.
And for original clarity of display the display brightness should be around 50%.

I have the oneplus 3t and purchased a G6 from eglobal. Excellent service and price. I must say I was also disappointed with the G6 screen the whites are so cool they look blue. I tried changing the colour temperature in the visual settings but couldn't find any srgb mode like I have on the 3t. Brightness is also not great. I sold it on as for me the lcd was just not very nice to look at which is a shame tbh. Hoping the v30 will use a better screen.
Coming from S7 Edge, I must say the LG G6 screen is quite poor ( I still have the S7E). People here bragging about it being an LCD display, true color renditions, and HDR, doesn't know enough to judge the displays. Well, I have a Mi 5 and also compared the iPhone 7 display to the LG 6 ( Both Mi 5 and iPhone 7 has LCD displays) and unfortunately, g6's display was not impressive at all. Not deep enough blacks ( Again comparing only to other LCD's and not to an AMOLED screen), not bright enough(Even indoors, I keep it around 60 plus percent for a satisfactory brightness), not sharp enough ( The text looks pale and not so sharp) and the viewing angles are terrible. I am of course not in any way expecting the G6 to compete with the Samsung AMOLED displays, but G6 being 2017 flagship from LG, should be good enough to compete with at least the Xiaomi Mi 5 if not an iPhone 7.
I bought it for a few reasons,
1) Design and look ( Looks pretty sleek and neat)
2) Got it for a really cheap deal
3) Love the wide angle camera
I had a really tough time maintaining my S7E. It does not have a proper tempered glass due to its edge display and that's the main reason I wanted to switch to another phone so that I can avoid the head ache of changing the tempered glass every month and also my S7E display cracked even with a tempered glass on ( Though it's pretty usable and used it in that same condition for about 6 months). So thought it's not worth getting the display replaced as it seems too fragile and I did not find any other phone to switch to(Not a fan of iPhones), so have temporarily switched to the G6. I think I will switch to Pixel 2 as soon as its launched ( Hate the present pixel for those ugly big chins)
So yeah the G6 display is a very mediocre and definitely not something you should buy the phone for.

Well this is a stupid assumption because me for example, reviews Monitors for Companies like Yamakasi, Catleap, Samsung, Dell. I had around 15 different Monitors in the last four years (21:9,4K,WQHD,IPS,TN,244 Hz,3D,PLS,G-Sync,Freesync, pretty much everything). And i can tell you from a standpoint where facts matter, the Amoled Smartphone displays are total crap. Amoled has nicer blacks because it doesn't require to power black pixels, in other words, black means off. But the over saturation is completely unrealistic and extremely annoying when taking pictures on your Smartphone and then transfering them to your PC suddenly noticing the Image is way less colorfull and saturated on a Eizo calibrated Eizo Foris. This is nuts. And if you find IPS Panels White color too cool, then you must know that Witebalance is increased with brightness. Whites may look whiter, but if you over expose greys become white too, thats why IPS displays look a bit cooler, because otherwise you would have a solid block of white instead of a nice dynamic range.
Im coming from a Galaxy Note 4 and, guys. This Display is so much better for people who actually want realistic colors and know how to use the camera properly. (eg. Tech Guys). I know many people want extreme Bass on their Headphones or over saturated displays, but it doesn't change the fact that you are loosing details or faking the output. Its simply unpleasant to the eye to have such a big amount of saturation where in reality everything looks much more natural. This stuff was cool when i was 14. Nowadays i want to reproduce everything 1:1, no matter if its Sound Quality or Display color. Professionals are much better off with the G6.

Serious the display is not good. The whites are so blue. Lets not turn this into amoled vs lcd because we all know LG, Apple/Sharp will be using Amoled in the future not lcd.
Just pick up an iPhone and compare the G6 screen and that will show how poor it is. Just hope v30 will be better.
I'm disappointed in Samsung crappy Amoled panels. My first S8+ had severly brighter upper half than bottom when viewing dark content. My second unit has white balance shift on the bottom part. Red left side green right side. I can never ever get a good Samsung panel. With the S7+ I switched phones 4 times and never got a good screen. Also Amoled whites suck it's not white like LCD. I ****ing give up on Sammy phones forever now I enjoy my G6 LCD so much more it has punch to its white and not these quality issues Samsung always has had.

Did you even read my complete post? My god, how you just want to jump all over and prove me wrong. Please read my complete post if you haven't already. I clearly said i am not comparing the G6's display to the AMOLED ones and i am a professional photographer myself and i know what it means to have a display that can render true colors. But i clearly mentioned that, when i compared this display with the Mi 5, iPhone7 and I even compared it to the Mi 6 today which all have LCD displays and not AMOLED, and unfortunately, they all render better colors ( Of course true colors), they look sharper ( In fact all those phones i mentioned doesnt even have a QHD display, they are all full HD) and over all more impressive. I am not here to win an argument, i am simply stating the facts. being a G6 owner my self, i have no reasons to prove anything against it, unless it is really true.
It really strikes me how display quality perception differs among individuals.
I'm in the process of choosing my next smartphone and, being picky on display quality, I read a lot of posts and reviews putting attention to the display topic.
Well, someone says LG G6 is an excellent display, with good luminosity, well calibrated colors and deep blacks (second only to HTC U Ultra, which looks to have one of the best LCD displays to date).
Someone else, the minority in my reading actually, are not happy and say that blacks quickly turn to grays even at little angles.
Obviously I'm puzzled, and now my only hope is that a store near me will receive a G6 soon, so I'll be able to check it out first hand.
Oneplus 3t in maximum brightness and lg g6 in maximum brightness which is brighter and better to read in the sun? I miss my oneplus two because it was mich better to read
