Coming for the iPhone world, i am used to an excellent and thorough backup solution for the iPhone. this includes a full restore from the back up.
Dabbling with my new S8, I yet to find such a routine. Having tried to backup to Samsung cloud several times, Samsung Switch, but not everything gets restored, and all the phone settings do not return prior to back up.
I do not want to trig knox.
Any solutions ??

I received a replacement phone today and was just wondering if it's safe to restore the backups I'd made on my old phone onto this new one. The serial number is different, of course...but I'm not sure what else might be in the backups that could screw things up.
Couldn't you back up the replacement phone restore with old back up see if it works then restore again? Just asking haven't rooted my phone yet so I'm guestimating but my guess is if you had a copy of the replacement phone root you should be good to tinker but I'll defer to the more experience hero tinkerers.
Good luck!
You're right. I assume the risk of bricking the phone is minimal since it seems we can always do a reset to stock using the RUU. I just thought I'd be a little cautious (for a change!). It's not like I don't have a few hours to spare...I should be working, after all.
Well, I was able to run Nandroid Restore without any obvious problems. The phone's serial number wasn't changed and all apps seem to be working fine. When I was researching this, I came across some old posts where people had problems with the accelerometer, but that's working fine too.
If anyone with more experience about this stuff knows of anything to look out for, please let us know... otherwise, it seems safe.
Not sure if this issue is related to the restore, but I figure I'll mention it.
I noticed today that Gmail wasn't syncing properly. Specifically, it was hanging when I'd try to send a message. I had two in the Outbox. The red "sending..." message just stayed there for a couple hours. So, I cleared the cache via Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications --> Gmail Storage. Afterwards, though I lost the messages in the Outbox, sending worked again.
Note that there's also a program listed in the Manage Applications list called Gmail. That's not the one you want though.
I had to do this several times because of my on going issues...another post..anyway, I found that if I trick Nandroid into thinking that it is the most current backup, that it will restore just fine. I have had no issues.
So I go to Sprint today to move phone numbers between phones on my account. Everything is great until my hero won't connect for data. Nothing we tried worked. I am running Fresh 2.1.1. So they really got confused with menus not working or not being in the right places. Especially problematic was the fact that I could not update my profile. Clicking on it did nothing in my Rom.
So I left with np data. I knew that it must have something to do with my unofficial Rom, but there is no way I am giving up root. So, I went back to the office, did a nandroid backup, restored my original stock Sprint 1.5 android and updated my profile. Voila we have data! Then I restored my fresh 2.1 nandroid and everything still works.
Moral of this story? I hope you have a good 1.5 backup if you ever need to change the number on the phone and data does not come back, and maybe this story will help someone else out in the future.

If that happens again just try turning off mobile network and turn it back on.
I had a problem with one of the ROMs where I would lose data after about a day and all I had to do was toggle it off and on.
Hey Guys,
So i picked up the Australian variant of the SG4 and haven't even had the pleasure of testing it out and i am already having issues.
I just backed up my iPhone 4s, and ran Smart Switch. Took forever to get to the point of selecting what i wanted migrated and then it said it was done on the computer end. On the phone end it uploaded my Calender and some SMS messages from 2010 and one recent one, But stalled for an hour on 2%, memos - 4% and Contacts - 11% and disappeared.
I factory reset it because I assumed I had screwed up.... but its done exactly the same thing... I started an hour ago and it is stuck on those exact same percentages....
Any one know what's going on???
I used an app called 'Bump'. Try that. Let me know how it goes!

So it comes up with wssyncmlnps has stopped every time I restarted the device.
Each time it would add things. It got to 99% of uploading the messages and failed again. So nod I'm stuck with messages from 2010 to may 2012 and nothing after. It now gets stuck at 69% of that final 1%.
Since I never saw the issue answered, and a search for a different issue brought me here, I'll post a a quick responce to SmartSwitch. You need to delete your old Apple backup, then in iTunes uncheck encrypted backup, then do a complete fresh backup. Smartswitch will then complete without issues.
Seems it can't deal with encryted backups, and even if you uncheck and backup again, it will fail, you must delete all old backups for that particular device first.
Hope this helps.

Didnt do anything for me.
I deleted my old iphone backup. Re backed up. I use smartswitch and follow the instructions and the items are there but greyed out and I can choose them.
You have 3 years worth of text messages! Lol
No wonder it's getting stuck, that's a lot of messages dude!

i have this same issue on the phone, pushes messages from the computer way too fast and gets stuck at 1%. Ive tried this on 2 S4's and 1 S3. I've also tried two backups.
I'm guessing it's fairly unusual around these parts but my S4 is completely stock, but I'm still having issues. I'm not particularly looking to root my phone at this stage either.
This has been bugging me since the OTA update (to Android 4.3), my phone locks up or freezes for short bursts - up to about 5 seconds sometimes. The phone is unresponsive during that time, it's most noticeable whilst texting - the line stops following my movements 1-2-3-4 then catches up, and whilst sliding between screens - it freezes mid 3d animation. It happens fairly frequently, many times a day and I'm not a heavy user. Strangely as part of my testing I tried running the stopwatch from the clock app and couldn't notice the 100th of seconds pause at any stage even after watching for several minutes.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Can anyone suggest where to start troubleshooting? Could it be a setting or an app causing this behaviour?
I did try searching and scanning the forum but please direct me if I've missed a similar thread.
Craig
Possibly factory reset may help, as you cant do much else on stock.
And I basically run stock also, phone is originally 02, but I flashed EE stock rom.
Anyone got a list of everything I need to backup before doing a factory reset.
The obvious I can think of are:
Apps
*Photos
*Text Messages
*MMS Messages (if separate)
*Call Log
*Access Points (not too bothered about)
*Contacts (all on-line anyway)
Bookmarks (not the end of the world)
Screen Layouts (is that possible)
I think I can handle the ones marked with *'s, but open to any advice on the others.
(Searching the forums for backup, restore or reset throws up too many results to help)

Download EFS professional mate and backup your EFS file incase something happen to your phone (EFS CONTAINS YOUR DEVICE IMEI WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT.maybe you might need it In a future, but we never know )
I too have the same issues on Stock H3G 4.3, particularly with Messaging. I'm unlocked however (tried H3G to see if the network improved with the bundled modem etc.). Are you able to flash a BTU rom?
Is that MK9.
You can get btu from a mega link that Repulsa posted the other day.He also posted a link for 3uk also, both you guys should download it for future reference as it only takes 20 mins opposed to 7 odd hours elsewhere.
Same here contacted as Samsung no joy just advised factory reset 3uk don't want to know my s4 has got worse made me think I should of kept my nexus 4 I can't go back because of Knox

Definitely going to try a factory reset, it's got to be worth a go, but I just need to figure out how to back up as much as I can first.
Just realised I need to add my WhatsApp conversations too.
A bit more searching for tools then I'll give a go.
Success
Hoo-rah!
A "Factory Reset" seems to have done the trick.
To fully see if a reset would work I elected to not restore any information from either Samsung or Google. Samsung said my data would be cleared from their servers .
After going through a few set-up wizards (Samsung and Google) I was able to test whether the lag was still there by typing a text message. After turning the "Continuous input" back on to get the swype-style line I was pleased to find that it no longer pauses .
I also pleasantly found that under the Samsung Account I was still able to restore my backed up data which returned my call logs and texts.
The phone has returned to default, with screens filled with Samsung apps, so I'm busy trying to clean those. I seem to have lost the 3 app too, but was that pre-installed?? I'm slowly adding apps back in case one of them caused the issue.
Thanks all.
My phone was in my pocket at work when I started hearing a woman's voice speaking Korean coming from it. I took my phone out to see that the phone seemed to have started some sort of update process without my prompting. All of the text was in korean, and my touch screen didn't function right. I restarted it several times, but was repeatedly brought back to the same screen. It asked me what language I spoke, and with some difficulty I managed to get it set to English. But that didn't help much. The touchscreen was being very whacky, and I could not get it to respond well enough to make it passed the series of menus. I was forced to reformat my phone. I have no idea what happend to it, but it works now. Is there any way to get my data back? I don't like to backup personal files. I usually recover data with recovery software. Until now it's never been an issue. I've never had anything like this happen before. It's a complete anomaly. I have no idea what would have caused my phone to do what it did. I don't even use it for much else but calls and texts.
TL;DR What is the best way to recover recently lost data on a note 4?
Apart from running data recovery software on your device. I don't think there is any other way to recover your data from it. You could take it to a Samsung Service Center, explain what happened with your device and ask them to help you. However because of the Data Protection Act they may not do so.

It always happens eventually. I'm afraid you will probably have to mark this down as 'lesson learned' and be sure to backup in future. In backup speak: "One is none".
If you're concerned about personal files being compromised because of a backup copy, use strong encryption: https://veracrypt.codeplex.com and store them locally, not in the cloud.
EDIT: And, by the way, recovery software doesn't work if your device is lost or stolen (immersed in water, shattered, burnt, blown up etc, etc...).
