Updating to Oreo without losing root? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hello, I recently got an exynos S8 and ai already installed TWRP and magisk. Is there a way to update to Oreo without losing my data and root? I barely finished setting everything up and it would be annoying to start over with a wipe

So, if We flash twrp straight after updating to oreo all data will be lost?

Use Titanium backup to get all your data back
I often change of custom ROM and I always keep all my data thanks to it
For the root, you will certainly lose it. But it takes 2min to flash the necessary file and get your root back

Not if you flash the ROM from TWRP.
But you will probably have to reinstall TWRP if you flash your ROM from Odin

I'm afraid it's not possible.
Once you flash TWRP, you change the official recovery to a custom one. Once it's done, you can't get OTA anymore for example. So no more official stuffs.
If you want to get the lastest official build, you should use Odin. But it will also flash the official recovery and it will replace TWRP. So if you still want TWRP you'll have to flash it again (through Odin too and after you flashed the official firmware). But at this moment you'll lose official OTA

I feared that from my experience with previous devices. I'm not so scared to reinstall TWRP and root as much as to lose my data, as I have a lot of apps that are annoying to reinstall (such as two factors authenticators or banking apps). I was thinking to try what they suggest in this post. But then, to install TWRP and root I would still need to wipe data, so it doesn't really solve my problem.
When you backup apps using titanium backup, do apps keep their data and configurations? For example, do you need to set again google authenticator or do you lose all access to your account?

You keep everything as long as you restore app + data

Help downgrading from Nougat to Marshmallow and/or getting rid of System apps in N.

I have a problem with Nougat, and that is - i can`t deinstall system apps. I tried it with system app remover, but it fails on every app. Next i tried with a file manager, but that doesn`t work either. The folders + apk`s just won`t go away, even after a restart. Then i tried to deinstall some stuff via TWRP file explorer, but got a blank screen without any apps after loading into system again.
It wasn`t anything critical for the system to work (i know what i`m doing) so i don`t get where the problem is. I then tried to install Marshmallow, but got into a bootloop and had to reinstall Nougat.
So, if someone knows how to get rid of system apps on Nougat, or if you know how to downgrade, please tell me both. Thanks.
are you root? if so, i've had luck modifying system with Root Explorer. (not sure which explorer you were using)

I've had luck removing system apps with FX explorer, but I had to remount system R/W before it would let me. Also I'm rooted.
I'd advise against tying to downgrade from Nougat at this point, it has caused bricks for many people.

If you wish to get rid of system apps, simply flash via recovery, the lastest supersu vip; system[less], whichever your preference. If you haven't already flashed twrp after flashing Nougat, do so first.
Install Titanium Backup, and you're all set; I've done it myself and works as it should.
If you were trying to downgrade to Marshmallow, you'd need to do a backup + full wipe, and install the M bootloader, boot, system, etc, then you could restore a custom ROM backup, if you had one.

Thanks. I flashed the latest twrp and supersu before upgrading to Nougat, and they both made it through, so it`s all set up.
I think i`ll try to downgrade since i don`t see the big Deal with N as of now + i have a much worse mobile data signal after updating to it. It`s almost constantly on H instead of 4g /LTE.
If someone is interested in downgrading, here`s an exact instruction that i found here on XDA:
"Download the MM stock firmware and extract all of it to a folder. Then open a cmd/terminal in the download folder (shift and right click in windows I believe, just right click and there will be a option in linux).
Then do these steps in order BACK UP YOUR APPS!!"
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
The names will be a little different, and if you want twrp put it in place of the stock recovery!
PS: Don't flash userdata
If that fails, i`ll install titanium backup to at least get rid of all the google stuff, like music, photos etc.

When I got my phone back after RMA from the BLOD it was on 7.0 and the first thing I did was flash a 6.0.1 factory image. I picked the same build number as the last Pure Nexus build in MM. I don't think flashing factory images through fastboot is a big risk as long as you are paying attention and following a good plan. Any other opinions are welcome.

Dude, does it fixes your lte issues? Because i am facing the same problem with my nexus 6p + android 7.1.1.
I personally have never had lte issues on any build, 6.x.x or 7.x.x on any custom rom or stock.

https://developers.google.com/android/images You need a complete factory image flash, including /data.
I had LTE problems from 7.1.2b to 7.1.1 (while I didn't have them on 7.1.1 before switching to 7.1.2b) and they were solved by factory reset.

How to start with stock S7E?

Hey guys,
got my completly new s7e yesterday and i'm a completly new user to android (coming from iOS).
I got three to four things in mind:
1. Do I have to root my phone to install TWRP? or, e.g.. what comes first, root or TWRP?
2. After I will have installed TWRP, so I need to make a Backup from my (still) stock ROM to have a backup?
3. If i root this stock Rom first, will the root be backupped too? By means, after i recover a recovery, will it still be rooted?
4. If i flash a rom, will my Data remain on the phone? (Contacs/Photos/installed Apps etc.)?
5. Can you guys recommend a debloated stocklike rom (maybe with optimized batterylife/performance) to start my experience with? (dont want to have all those unneccessary apps on my phone)
Thanks in advance

1. The easiest way to root is to use CF-Autoroot and then install twrp with Flashify.
2. It is not necessary to make a backup, but if you are planning on installing a custom rom, then it's highly recommended that you do so.
3. Yes, the root will stay intact. But if it doesn't for some reason, then you can always re-root your device via twrp, which never should be replaced by the stock one, unless you specifically flash another recovery.
4. No, when you install a custom it always wipes your data.
5. I personally use this rom, it is a Note 7 ported Rom which brings many new features and a more mature UI. Plus that rom has a great battery life combined with great speed, which many note 7 ports lack.

Yes you must wipe your data to remove Samsung's encryption, otherwise twrp won't be able to access your internal storage.
With the custom rom you must always wipe your data, because the data will get corrupted if you don't do so and it will cause a lot of problems.

By reset do you mean restore it to "out of box" state? Then you need to restore your pre-root backup or flash stock via fastboot. But at this time locking the bootloader is not possible since we do not have the latest firmware, unless your device has older firmware installed (only the output of "fastboot getvar all" would tell us for sure)

Then you can chose the option that fit's best...
1) Unroot in the SuperSU app's Setting's menu with Full Unroot option. This will remove root but not restore the original recovery, most likely leaving TWRP in place, then boot into the bootloader, start recovery (TWRP most likely) and perform an advanced wipe including caches, user data, and internal storage
2) Boot into TWRP and restore your pre-root backup, then perform a factory reset. This may or may not remove TWRP depending on how you did the backup. If you booted TWRP and performed the backup, it should be essentially back to factory state including stock recovery, if you flashed TWRP first then backed up then TWRP will remain.
3) Restore to stock via fastboot with the latest factory image.
Your choice of which is most appropriate for your circumstances.

After you have unrooted, clear data on Snapchat and then log in again (or uninstall and reinstall Snapchat).
I don't use Snapchat or Whatsapp, but my understanding is that you have to login before you root... if you have tried to login, it remembers you were rooted until you clear data.

Well, that shouldn't be it... but locking the bootloader is difficult depending on what version you are on now. The problem is you must flash a complete factory image to lock and we don't have the latest images.

No I'm almost 99% positive that that's wrong you don't need a locked bootloader to log into snapchat? Where did you read this??
@acejavelin is extremely knowledgeable and will be able to help you with any problem you come across, but you should not need to lock bootloader...anything I find says snap blocks root...and safety net is tripped by an unlocked bootloader. The two don't go hand in hand though. Snapchat doesn't use safety net.
Edit: if you're able to make a backup of a snapchat that is logged in using Titanium backup, and then install that backup onto your phone. Don't know if you have an extra device around though. But really confused as to why reinstalling didn't even work? Is there a chance that the unroot option in superSU did not remove root fully??

About 95% sure... Like I said, I don't use SnapChat, but to my knowledge the SafetyNet API doesn't check the bootloader status on Marshmallow devices, only on devices that shipped with Nougat (not that were upgraded).
There has to be some left-overs from root that are causing it to fail.

I doubt it will help, but you can backup and try it... Most likely something is still in /system, you need to restore your pre-root backup for system and boot and wipe caches. If you don't have that backup then reflash the stock image.

Cleanest root

Hello everyone !
I currently have a H870 european LG g6.
I want to root my phone but I don't want to install TWRP.
I want the lightest and "as stock as possible" way to root.
Is it possible? Thanks a lot for your help !
Your NEED to unlock bootloader. Then ADB to root.
Why not have twrp installed? Great for backup restoring flashing latest root list goes on.
If you want a rom which is 'stock as possible' install Fulmics rom. You do need to unlock your bootloader and use TWRP to install the rom tho'.

Aight if you don't want any rom, you still got to unlock your bootloader cause you need to install TWRP to install magisk or supersu. Which root app do you prefer?
I have the US997 and want something similar. I want to root the stock rom with Magisk and still be able to take an OTA. Ideally, unlock, flash TWRP, root, and then flash back stock recovery. This is possible correct?

Nope, you always need a custom recovery to flash SuperSu or Magisk.
Anyway, why you don't want the custom recovery? You can always remove it by flashing the stock one.

Zefie's TWRP doesn't have any major problems, official one is unable to mount system and has problems with backups, nothing to do with normal usage of the phone.

Thanks! I wish somebody knowledgeable would post an "Ultimate Guide to Rooting your LG G6" thread and make it a sticky. There are contradicting/incomplete instructions on when to press and release the Volume & Power button, when to disconnect the USB cable, etc.
I believe many simple questions on flashing recovery and rooting will keep coming back until a correct, complete and detailed step-by-step guide gets posted.

Normally the way to upgrade as long as you are doing official is to download the OTA and do a local update.
Then install TWRP. I never wipe to upgrade.

OK, since I only had custom roms and twrp and read somewhere that twrp didn't support official Ota I thought that to flash new Ota I had to wipe clean everything and reflash : x

No.
If you are on the stock OOS or the Beta OOS as long as you stay on the same stock or beta; you download the OTA and do a local install.
This preserves your data and you only need to install TWRP and Magisk again.
I don't understand people that whine about having to install TWRP or Magisk again since it only takes about 5 minutes to do correctly.
I just do an OTA local install and hook the phone up to my computer and re-install TWRP, etc.

Not whining at all. I said wipe everything, meaning EVERYTHING.

Sorry, was not talking about you specifically.
Going from a custom ROM to OTA, you do need to wipe.
Going from any ROM to any other ROM, you need to wipe.
you can always "dirty flash" but there is no guarantee for wonky behavior.
On the other hand people want to take the OTA and preserve root.
Rooting take five minute so I don't understand the jumping through hooks to keep root.
