How to start with stock S7E? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hey guys,
got my completly new s7e yesterday and i'm a completly new user to android (coming from iOS).
I got three to four things in mind:
1. Do I have to root my phone to install TWRP? or, e.g.. what comes first, root or TWRP?
2. After I will have installed TWRP, so I need to make a Backup from my (still) stock ROM to have a backup?
3. If i root this stock Rom first, will the root be backupped too? By means, after i recover a recovery, will it still be rooted?
4. If i flash a rom, will my Data remain on the phone? (Contacs/Photos/installed Apps etc.)?
5. Can you guys recommend a debloated stocklike rom (maybe with optimized batterylife/performance) to start my experience with? (dont want to have all those unneccessary apps on my phone)
Thanks in advance

1. The easiest way to root is to use CF-Autoroot and then install twrp with Flashify.
2. It is not necessary to make a backup, but if you are planning on installing a custom rom, then it's highly recommended that you do so.
3. Yes, the root will stay intact. But if it doesn't for some reason, then you can always re-root your device via twrp, which never should be replaced by the stock one, unless you specifically flash another recovery.
4. No, when you install a custom it always wipes your data.
5. I personally use this rom, it is a Note 7 ported Rom which brings many new features and a more mature UI. Plus that rom has a great battery life combined with great speed, which many note 7 ports lack.

Found this Thread, guess i can use it to install twrp and root - like in the Video shown?
Do i really have to factory reset my phone to do so (install twrp/root)?

But TWRP/Rooting does it once? See Post 1

Yes you must wipe your data to remove Samsung's encryption, otherwise twrp won't be able to access your internal storage.
With the custom rom you must always wipe your data, because the data will get corrupted if you don't do so and it will cause a lot of problems.

[Q] ParanoidAndroid - should I root before installing?

topic.
N4 is my 2nd Android phone (my 1st is an old HTC Magic) and have never rooted a device before.
I'd like to install PA. So do I need to root it first?
Also I have already installed some apps, I'd like to do backup before factory reset. What is the easiest way for this?
Thank you

Firstly Install carbon backup app (like titanium backup) from the play store to backup your app and app data. It is good because you don't need to root your device in order to backup.
However in order to root, you need to unlock the bootloader which will delete everything from your phone. After that it is easy to root your phone using the guides in the forum. I suggest you don't use toolkit if you want to learn how everything works.
Only after rooting, you can install PA.

You don't need to root. Open boot loader, install custom recovery preferably twrp and you can install the zip files you need. Roms come rooted by default you don't need to worry about that.
i think root will make it easy to install app

Thanks moles. I didn't know that you didn't need to be rooted to your roms. I guess you learn something new everyday. Btw I love your PA roms. This is my first android device and PA is the only ROM I've ever flash. Keep the good work.

T-Mobile FOG->FOJ Root

Hey guys,
I just rooted yesterday (G900T..FOG) using the TrapKernel method and everything is working just fine. Today I got a prompt for a new security update (FOJ). I haven't installed it yet and was curious -- if I do, will that remove my root? I'm assuming yes. Say I do install it -- is there anything I can do to get back my root aside from downgrading and re-applying TrapKernel?
Secondly, would I be able to flash a rooted FOJ ROM over the top of my FOG and still keep my root or will the update from J to G ? What steps would I need to do to accomplish this other than find the ROM and flash & wipe cache/davlik. Would I be able to dirty flash this or would a full wipe be required?
Last question (for now), if I choose to flash a CM ROM like Fusion would that keep my root as well? Again, I'm pretty sure the answer is yes I just don't want to make bad things happen that could be avoided.
1. if you take the OTA, root will be lost. You will have to downgrade, root, then upgrade using a prerooted rom to get it back.
2. Prerooted stock ROMs are the way to go. Just download Muniz_ri's prerooted stock OJ4 rom and flash it, you'll update to OJ4 and keep root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/development/how-to-update-to-g900tof6-5-1-1-pc-t3141404
Straight from that page:
- No need to wipe, the ROM will perform a factory data reset during the flash. Backup your User Data prior to flashing.

The ROM will wipe itself, you'll need to back up your stuff before the update.
3. The vast majority of custom ROMs are prerooted. Cyanogen based ones require you to enable root in the developer settings, FYI

need help with my grand prime sm-g532f

hello guys,
is there any custom frimeware for the galaxy grand prime sm-g532f ? i looked everywhere but can't find one.
i need one because there is no more space in my phone, the system took almost everything, 6.5go of the 8 availble, so i can't install big apps even with an sd card ! any solution ?
i was about to install a stock rom, but someone told me that it will take the same space as my current rom .
thank you.
I don't think any developer is interested in this device, it could be due to non-availability of unlocked bootloader, firmware sources, etc. I am thinking of getting rid of mine and move to another device that supports open hardware/software.
In possible solution if you managed to root it the use system app remover to get rid of Samsung bloat.
Good luck.

All phones when you unbox are on factory ROM (aka stock ROM). I think you are referring to rooting and installing custom recovery, I failed and phone always go into boot-loop making me to re-flash stock boot and recovery images.

Please post your results, I am hopeless with this severely bloated device.
Update:
Managed to root using TWRP.
1. Install TWRP recovery.img using ODIN (Windows) or Heimdall (Linux) including SU. Details in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...overy-twrp-3-1-0-1-samsung-galaxy-j2-t3616589
Reboot to TWRP > format Data partition > while you are connected to PC > copy SU.zip to data and flash it.
2. Get SU.zip from here;
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133/
Good luck.

Cleanest root

Hello everyone !
I currently have a H870 european LG g6.
I want to root my phone but I don't want to install TWRP.
I want the lightest and "as stock as possible" way to root.
Is it possible? Thanks a lot for your help !
Your NEED to unlock bootloader. Then ADB to root.
Why not have twrp installed? Great for backup restoring flashing latest root list goes on.
If you want a rom which is 'stock as possible' install Fulmics rom. You do need to unlock your bootloader and use TWRP to install the rom tho'.

?? He just wants root. Nothing else. No ROM.
Aight if you don't want any rom, you still got to unlock your bootloader cause you need to install TWRP to install magisk or supersu. Which root app do you prefer?
I have the US997 and want something similar. I want to root the stock rom with Magisk and still be able to take an OTA. Ideally, unlock, flash TWRP, root, and then flash back stock recovery. This is possible correct?

Yea you can do that. You can keep the stock rom if you want but you will need to flash TWRP to install magisk. Magisk comes with a .zip file which only can be installed with TWRP.

Nope, you always need a custom recovery to flash SuperSu or Magisk.
Anyway, why you don't want the custom recovery? You can always remove it by flashing the stock one.

I have read a lot of issues other users have trying to make TWRP to work. I was thinking it would be better for me if there was a way to skip TWRP when rooting my LG G6.

Zefie's TWRP doesn't have any major problems, official one is unable to mount system and has problems with backups, nothing to do with normal usage of the phone.

Thanks! I wish somebody knowledgeable would post an "Ultimate Guide to Rooting your LG G6" thread and make it a sticky. There are contradicting/incomplete instructions on when to press and release the Volume & Power button, when to disconnect the USB cable, etc.
I believe many simple questions on flashing recovery and rooting will keep coming back until a correct, complete and detailed step-by-step guide gets posted.

Updating to Oreo without losing root?

Hello, I recently got an exynos S8 and ai already installed TWRP and magisk. Is there a way to update to Oreo without losing my data and root? I barely finished setting everything up and it would be annoying to start over with a wipe
So, if We flash twrp straight after updating to oreo all data will be lost?
Use Titanium backup to get all your data back
I often change of custom ROM and I always keep all my data thanks to it
For the root, you will certainly lose it. But it takes 2min to flash the necessary file and get your root back

Not if you flash the ROM from TWRP.
But you will probably have to reinstall TWRP if you flash your ROM from Odin

I'm afraid it's not possible.
Once you flash TWRP, you change the official recovery to a custom one. Once it's done, you can't get OTA anymore for example. So no more official stuffs.
If you want to get the lastest official build, you should use Odin. But it will also flash the official recovery and it will replace TWRP. So if you still want TWRP you'll have to flash it again (through Odin too and after you flashed the official firmware). But at this moment you'll lose official OTA

I feared that from my experience with previous devices. I'm not so scared to reinstall TWRP and root as much as to lose my data, as I have a lot of apps that are annoying to reinstall (such as two factors authenticators or banking apps). I was thinking to try what they suggest in this post. But then, to install TWRP and root I would still need to wipe data, so it doesn't really solve my problem.
When you backup apps using titanium backup, do apps keep their data and configurations? For example, do you need to set again google authenticator or do you lose all access to your account?

You keep everything as long as you restore app + data
