How is camera on custom Roms with GCam? (especially low light) - LG G6 Questions and Answers

The one thing that is keeping me stand offish on the G6 is the camera, it seems it isnt very good in low light (but great else wise) and I'm not a fan of LG's OS, so I'd want to install a custom rom, which I know usually means worse camera, but not sure if the GCam port can fix that
So anyone have experience with GCam on a custom rom and at low light?
Thanks

Photo Quality in CM Roms

I installed CM12 stable on my K3 note and so far its been pretty good performance wise compared to VibeUI.
However, I feel the camera quality has gone down drastically
I tried installing snapit camera on CM rom which i think is doing little better, but still i feel quality has gone down.
Is it just me, or cam quality in CM/AOSP roms is not that great ? And more importantly any fixes ?
tried differents versions of the snapit camera? Ive read somewhere that the IQ of the picture can be different. Also Lspeed mod disable the compression of the photo that seems to be enabled in most roms.

Color OS , No doubt
Why not install any rom you like and simply install sultans camera Hal in it.? Wouldn't be the same results in camera quality?

Colour OS as well as H2OS....

After using purity, sultans cm13, cm13, DU rom, AOSPA, roms, I have to say that the stock OOS camera is unmatched. Nothing comes close, not even with sultan hal installed, (even if stock OOS suffers from low fps in dark light). In terms of clarity, and image quality is by far the best. Combined with the best possible GSM reception and by far the fastest LTE speeds (in most cases not even close in rom vs OOS speeds tested in the very same spot) is a no brainer for me. At least for now, until some roms incorporate those two major assets. On the other hand every single one custom rom are by a far smoother than OOS, more memory distribution efficient, and of course by a far more customisable. That's my point of view after all those tests. Depending on priorities, each of as makes its choice.

Did you try the OOS camera ported on MM Roms, for example Sultan's CM13?
I only tired OSS abd Sultan CM13.
IMO, OSS.
Ive tried the OOS port into all of the above roms, but although it was a bit better than the roms integrated camera apps, was nowhere near the OOS clarity. I dont know what the stock OOS does with the camera quality, but it's significantly ahead (even fir someone that is no photographer or photo expert) of other roms. Something it's in the coding, or settings, I don't realy know, but the difference is easily noticeable.

CM13 with Google Camera and OOS Camera is pretty good

It's placebo. The same exact HAL is used in custom ROMs. The only thing you could possibly be referring to is the camera app itself and whatever they call it... Clear something or other...
Pics are taken without clear mod or any other special setting. Maybe it's a placebo effect, but the difference was obvious from the first time I installed a custom rom. No matter how good was the rom (in most cases was much better than OOS in terms of smoothess), and still till now that installed the OOS back I have the same opinion. Maybe it's a placebo effect I don't know.

No plaCebo efffect....i have experienced twice after flashin cm13 by sultan..quality is very bad

So Stock OOS has better cam quality vs Sultans Cam HAL OOS?
Yes ...stock camera is way bettr or u can say..Cm13 camera sucks

It really depends...Stock camera app reduces a lot of noise, making the pics seem better. It actually removes detail in the process of removing noise. btw you can just flash OOS camera app on cm13 or other rom and it will be like stock (except clear image wont work, but clear image is really more of a marketing gimmick, it removes a lot of noise from pics, taking away lots of detail)
Do you know you can also remove noise on CM13 camera (snap)?
I have tried OOS camera port in every other rom I have installed, and the result was nowhere near the OOS camera in OOS. I don't know what it's different, may there is something more, but im convinced that its not a placebo effect. I dont know. If you count also the fact that lte speed is wayyyyy faster ( in OOS ookla test maxed at 125 maps, instead of 40 in every other rom in the same spot and time of day. I also don't know what seams to be the problem in custom roms for now ) than every custom rom, for me is a no go for custom roms. At least for now. And I must say that I love their smoothness. But.....

In my experience picture quality depends heavily on the camera app used. Ie i get awful results with snap cam. Using fv-5 and camera zoom which produce nice quality (running aicp, stock hal)

Le Pro 3 Camera Quality on Lineage OS 14.1

How is the quality of pictures on Lineage OS 14.1?
Do you have samles? Original files for me?
Thank you.
In my opinion, it's worse than the stock one.
I am not so sure but i think that every nougat has more or less the same quality in photos which i find it to be little worse than stock but not that noticable.
I also use open camera.
i thought nougat will bring better camera performance? Why is it a step back?

because leeco used propietary camera app, nougat is stock camera app, there are a few threads showing results with different camera apps , but they are with sotck based roms.
But camera can be improved with next updates in lineage OS?
Isn't there an HTC camera port that contains HTC libraries so it can render pretty good pictures?
Dont know??
I have a question. I am using OniRom and as I see I cannot use HDR in any app. It either doesn't show that option at all or even if it shows it (only in omnirom default camera) photos are definitively not in HDR. Does anyone know reason or solution for this?
Its horrible.
Doesn't the Pro 3 use a Sony IMX298 sensor, same as the OnePlus 3? Not a flagship camera but it shouldn't be too bad, no?

Lieageos photo quality vs stock Android one

Hi! I'm thinking off buying a Xiaomi Mi A1 and was wondering how does the lineageos photo app compare to stock one? Is the photo quality the same? Does the 2x optical zoom work?
dont buy mia1 in 2018 buddy, get something with sd636/660 or 845 instead. Redmi note 5 pro, mia2 and poco f1 are my quick suggestions.
Thank you for you repley but it doesn't answer my question. I don't play games so don't give a crap about faster CPU. My Nexus 5 is enough for me so I presume that Mi A1 CPU will be more than enough. It has micro SD and 3,5 jack so all I need. Back on topic. How does the lineageos camera photo quality compare to stock? I would like to run lineage Google free.
If you want quality, you must install Gcam port. Both stock and aosp cameras suck.
Not running Lineage, but I saw Magisk module for stock camera on custom ROMs, so you should be able to use stock app with 2x zoom. 3rd party camera apps do not support switching to 2x zoom lens (at least none of those which I tried). Though 2x zoom lens is not very useful, thanks to slow aperture it's next to unusable in anything else than bright light. Portrait mode is nice in theory, but you can't turn of "beautification" mode, which is utter crap as it smears all the details. Otherwise stock camera performance during day is very good (IMHO much more natural than GCAM). In low light it's crap, this is when I switch to GCAM and its magical HDR mode. But I don't know if you can run GCAM without Google framework.
So I'm stuck with either google looking into my pants or using some patched files which I can't trust or having a crap stock camera. SNAFU
Well, pick your poison..

Original LG G3 camera app AND up-to-date security patches

Hello and a Happy New Year!
I wonder if/how it is possible to have the original LG G3 (D855) camera app AND up-to-date security patches on this phone.
While currently I am running LOS 16.0, I found that the available camera app produces very unsharp photos in darker surroundings as compared to the original LG G3 camera app on the latest available Marshmallow (from 2016, though, and thus lacking newer security patches).
So I am looking for some compromise where security is slightly more important than crisp photos.
Any recommendations for alternatives to the original MM and LOS 16.0? Or shall I try different camera apps instead on LOS?
Thank you so much for your hints.
Worth to note: My Samsung S7 produced much better photos with its original camera app in the exactly same surroundings (tested same objects with both mobiles at dusk). Whether this is hardware-related or because of the (non-)stock camera apps, I do not know, but that would become too OT here, so please read this just as some background information from me.

The G3 camera just Is but great. Nothing can be done. The S7 is also 2 years newer than the G3. But the G3 wasn’t known for the best photos.
It could be a hardware problem or wear with the camera. Back when the G3 had just came out my camera was decent. While my friends same model the camera was dull.

Thank you. From what you wrote I understand that either I have to live with the stock MM from LG but lack the recent (and future) security patches, or to keep LOS (or another custom ROM) for better security but "weaker" camera capabilities. I have not yet tried the OpenCamera or other apps and may yet tweak the LOS camera settings for a better performance.
Or are there any ROMs that have both, i.e. current security patches and the stock LG camera (which I found quite good also in less lit surroundings before the update to LOS and LOS' camera app).
Please forgive me that I kind of repeat my question. The reason is that you (surely rightfully) wrote that the LG G3 is not known for a good camera (and older than my reference Samsung S7 and Google Nexus 4 besides). I should have stressed more my point that I find the LOS camera inferior to the original LG G3 camera app. Hence my question if there was a way to have both - LG stock camera app and up-to-date security patches, and if yes, which ROM/solution that would be.
OpenCamera bigger file than stock camera

Just double-checked image results for OpenCamera now (I use it usually) and (just shooting the trees outside my window now) stock camera highest setting gives me a 2.3mb file whereas OpenCamera set to 100% quality on .webp gives me 2.6mb. Also much better privacy, no telemetry, less data, etc.

How do they differ in quality, especially at low light? I have just softbricked my G3, so I cannot yet test myself.
Late reply but I am setting up an old G3 I had lying around that was on MM before going out of service (battery). I am planning to update it to LineageOS 17.1. Before I do that I will rip the camera app APK and get it to you to see if that works?
