My Note 4, which was repaired some months ago for the dreaded EMMC error, is really starting to feel old now. I've had the thing for three years and I've grown tired of Marshmallow and Samsung's prior heavyweight Touchwiz. I recently purchased a Tab S3 and am liking the newer experience so I'm thinking it's time to replace my phone.
Honestly, the 8 series (S8, S8+, Note 8) doesn't appeal to me very much. I do like a physical home button, and the super-tall screens in the 8 series seem, well, off. Thus my interest in the S7 Edge. Nougat is available now, so that's good, and supposedly Oreo will arrive eventually. I'm a T-Mobile customer. My research indicates the S7 Edge supports all necessary LTE bands. B&H is selling new SM-G935F (international variant) S7 Edges for $500.
So I'm wondering if it's reasonable to buy an S7 Edge here in the early days of 2018, nearly two years after the phone was released?
Why don't you consider the A8 2018. I know it doesn't have a home button, but it feels more like older Galaxy phones.
I have G935f, it's still a beast with little to no lag.
Well it depends on what you want.
I personally think the S7 edge trumps the S8 in every way that I care abuot
Pretty much the same processor and therefore speed.
has the sexy curved screen
Bigger battery and more battery life
Pretty much the same UI, can make it exactly the same by using an S8 port if you wish. Just simply using the S8 launcher is enough for me.
physical button
front mounted fingerprint sensor (that also isnt always on and wasting power, although this can be modded)
Many well established ROMS, kernels, mods etc. (come on, you're on XDA )
more affordable
Oreo is still coming for s7 edge
Some cons to think about
even though the camera hardware is the same, the software is different and the s8 has better night time photos
alot of developers are updating to the 8 series and so they either no longer develop for s7 edge or they cant test with their own devices - development is slowing down for S7 edge
S8 will be updated by samsung for longer and have continuous development for longer
@SteveRiley
$500 is too much imo
What do I want? Well, I've managed to tabletize a fair amount of stuff I used to do on a phone: browsing web sites, reading books, watching movies, managing finances, shopping online. I use the phone for -- shockingly -- a lot of phone calls (daily interactions with clients), texting, listening to music, and spur-of-the-moment email replies. The camera is irrelevant to me: I'm simply not one who takes photos. But a big battery is certainly a plus. And yeah, my early XDA days were filled with rooting and ROMing; lately, though, I've not found that to be as necessary as before.
The A series did catch my eye. IIRC, it has a lower resolution screen. 1920x1080 is just low enough to be annoying even if I'm not staring at the thing all day.
Yeah, $500 is a bit much for a two-year-old phone. Perhaps I'm a good candidate for checking Swappa.

If you use your phone for functions that dont require Exynos Octa, you dont have much interest in the development scene and you dont want to pay that much for an old model, then the S7 edge is probably not for you (although I pretty much see it as an affordable S8). The S7 edge also defaults at 1920x1080 as samsung and a few tests I read about has shown that people pretty much cant tell the difference at the normal distance we hold our phones (apparently its for VR where the phone is literally on your face).
I say get The A series and save $$$, have essentially the same pixel density and miss no functions that you describe.
Also on a side note, they definitely have opened up the functions and features a bit more, but once I went to custom ROMs, I can't go back haha too much goodies in the custom ROMs for me. I think I lasted 6 weeks before I couldnt handle it anymore.
At the moment s7e is best value for money, with good hardware, camera, functions and battery. I recommend

Hm, that doesn't seem to align with what I've read elsewhere:
* 5.5 in (140 mm)
* 210 ppcm (534 ppi)
* Quad HD Super AMOLED
* 2560×1440 pixel resolution (16:9 aspect ratio)

It has the pixels to do so, but on Nougat, the default resolution is 1920x1080, optionally scalable up to 2560×1440. They claim that this is to save battery - people say conflicting things about whether it does significantly save battery or not. Tests have shown that people can't really tell the difference at normal distances. I can't really. The 2560×1440 resolution option has been said to be more useful for Samsung VR which the S7 edge is capable of.

I'm getting tired of the horrible camera from my note 3 and really bad build quality, so I'm thinking of getting a new flagship phone and pass my note to my girlfriend.
At the moment, I'm deciding between the nexus 6p and the newly released Galaxy s7 edge.
I used some AOSP roms on my Samsung and I fell in love with them, the ui was incredibly smooth and minimalistic, everything was flying except for the camera performance and poor battery life because somehow touchwizz had better drivers. I would really love a stock android rom on the premium body of the 6p, but I'm planning to use this phone for a long time, at least 3 years. So I was wondering if the s7 edge wouldn't be a better option, since it has better specs and should be more future proof.
How is the snapdragon 810 compared to the exynos 8890? Is the exynos much better?

With just 0.2" more and a just slightly bigger bezel at the nexus 6p, there isn't that much of a size difference between the two.
When it comes to fluidity, sure both serve a great experience as well. I at least haven't faced any fluidity problems at my G935F within the 2 days I own it and I used it pretty much including playing XCOM and FF9 which both take nice load on the device (it even just gets slightly warm at those games, I only barely noticed it even while it was something I actively checked for). But it's most likely not that much different at the nexus 6p.
The 6p is when it comes to updates more future proof, because it will get them sooner and as it is atm a year longer than the galaxy family (nexus update policy is about 3 years, samsung is known for supporting devices for 2 years, on the other hand, by being mostly open source nexus devices can have a much longer update lifetime through the community and custom roms, galaxy devices as well, but escpecially at exynos devices it is much harder). On the other hand does the s7 ship with vulkan api support already, what is more or less the next big thing in gaming.
When it comes to bare bones benchmark performance, the exynos has the upper hand pretty easily (about 50% better overall performance at antutu).
Had to make the same decision as my old phone died recently. I had the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 5. Now I ended up with the S7 edge. I think it is fair to say that the phone aim for a different type of consumer.
As I was at the university I wanted to have a cheaper phone, with a lot of customization. Also something I could "work" with, e.g. flash and modify.
Now I wanted to have something more "solid". I am not interested in flashing anymore, but something that is and looks like some value. With good camera and good performance (I did not notice the occasional lag nor would a frame lost while scrolling bother me that much).
Thus, I ended up buying the S7.
After having the 6P since it came out, I can say it's really not that great - I'm getting my S7 Edge tomorrow and look forward to using a much smaller phone, with a much better display and camera.
If you're using it for 3 years, then I'd go nexus. I'd get very sick of slow updates and TouchWiz in 3 years. The decision came down to this for me: Updates, development, and front facing speakers or nicer design, best specs available, and SD card.

I feel like there is a huge size difference between the 6p and s7 edge. 6p feels massive now when I hold it whereas the s7 edge is much better suited for one-hand use.
Overall you can't really go wrong with either. The nexus does feel a bit more fluid when navigating / using apps but it's barely noticeable, and it will receive timely updates. The samsung has the better display, camera, and battery. I think the only thing I really miss from the nexus is the fingerprint reader on the back.
I had the Nexus 6p for two weeks before the metal case buckled near the volume rocker, google it, it's a common problem. I returned it in favor of the S7E.
On the Nexus I loved the fingerprint reader location, front facing speakers and stock Android but I wasn't banking on the hardware lasting 2yrs given that it started to fail after two weeks.

Sorry for OT, but what is as much better at locating it on the back. I really like it at the front, it's pretty natural to use the thumb to unlock the device while in hand. Maybe slightly less as while it was on the back with the index finger, but I get the ability to also unlock it while the device is lying on the table, what is a big plus for my opinion...

This exactly. It's a great device, hardware wise. However that little size difference DOES make a difference. It's just a hair too long and wide to be comfortable sitting with in in jeans of any sort...and the stock android experience is nice, but a bit overhyped, at least for me. I also found it to be a rather plain, and boring device. Took GREAT photos and i loved the placement of the fingerprint sensor, but ultimately I let it go to get the S7 Edge.
One thing to consider, if you're not going to root it, go with the S7E. I had the Nexus 6P and I can't root due my work app detecting it (even with xposed) and it's just so vanilla that I got pretty bored with it. Even iOS seems to have more options than stock Android. The S7E has a ton of features baked in that are fun to play with.
If you can root though and install ROM's like PA, CM, etc... then the Nexus 6P might be the best way to go.
I sold my 6p the same day I got my s7 edge. To me they are both just as fast. After owning several Samsung and a couple nexus phone I can't believe how fluid and smooth the s7 edge is. As others have stated the 6p did feel a little bigger and harder to manage than the s7 edge. Both are great phones. I don't regret my decision at all.

If you use your phones for 2-3 years, the S7 might be slightly more future proof because of the great processor be it SD or Exynos, plus 4gb of RAM that should account for at least 2 years of usage imo, and you get the SD card storage so you would probably need to get at least the 64GB 6P in order for it to be slightly future proof.
I've owned the 6P and the 5X so I'll pipe in on this as well. The 6P is a GREAT device when it comes to updates and having the backing of the dev community. If you don't like something about the user experience, you can bet there is something out there that will allow you to modify whatever it is you're griping over. I never had a problem with the hardware and the camera was surprisingly GOOD!
It is, however, a pretty girthy device. When comparing it to the S7 Edge, it's really not even a comparison. The 6P footprint is larger and much more difficult to use one handed. I found myself having to use to do some thumb gymnastics to reach the corners and I'd like to think I have some decent sized hands.
At the end of the day, it boils down to your preference. If you can stomach TW, then get the Galaxy. If you're #TeamStock all the way then the Nexus is for you.

It just felt a lot more natural in the back and the sensor is more accurate. Not to take anything from the gs7 edge fingerprint sensor which is pretty good but definitely not as good as the nexus.
Erhh.. Still cant decide.
Nexus pros are:
- faster updates
- front facing speakers
- cheaper
Galaxy pros are:
- beautiful
- somewhat smaller and easier to handle one handed
- larger battery
- water resistant
- optical image stabilization
I live in an area where we get the Exynos model...
I hope it will be as good as the snapdragon.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I decided to buy the nexus in the end.
Here's why: I will use it for at least 3 years, so the constant updates are a big plus. Also, even if it has lower specs then the s7, the software is much more optimized. No matter how fluid and smooth touchwiz has become, no Samsung in this world runs better then stock android on the latest nexus flagship.
And even if it has slightly lower specs then the s7, they are still more then enough for what I'm planning to use it for: Internet browsing, YouTube, Facebook, clash of clans and taking pictures (I read that the camera is great).
The reason I'll be using it this much is that the store I buy it from, here in Romania, offers the possibility to get 1 or 2 more years of warranty, aside from the 2 years the device already comes with. And if do I get extra warranty, it becomes premium warranty. This means: if my device breaks and needs to be sent for repair, they send a courier to my door to pick the product for me, free of charge and free shipping. And if they don't fix the device within 5 working days, I can get a full refund of the initial price. That's right, after let's say 3 years, when this phone will be worth around 200-300$ in used condition, I can get the full 570$ I initially payed, if they can't fix the phone.
I already did that with my nexus 10 after a year, then got enough money to get the note 3. My note still has 2 more years and a few months of warranty, in which time I'm 100% positive that it will eventually break.
The note goes to my girlfriend and I decided that I want a new phone, a premium one that I'll be using for a long time while I have the 4 years warranty.
If you can't afford an Edge, go with a 6P.
6p horrible batterlife
I know, this seems like a no-brainer: Two-year old Chinese upstart’s first device vs. the 7th generation Samsung Galaxy flagship phone. But here’s why: I sold my S4 and skipped the S5 & S6 because the OnePlus was that good, and back then the motto “Flagship Killer” was no exaggeration. And after having the S7 for a week now, I realize that I could have been pretty content pressing on with my OPO—it’s still that good. But I wouldn’t go back, and here’s why:
DESIGN
When I unboxed the OPO it blew me away. The unboxing experience was amazing for a $350 Chinese device, from the quality of the packaging materials, quality of the accessories (even the SIM tray ejector tool!) and the device itself looked amazing. I had unboxed the S3 and S4—this was better by 100 miles! The S7 unboxing experience wasn’t nearly as good as the OPO, just meh... another typical Samsung box with a cool flap that has a magnetic lock.
But when I put the two devices side-by-side, the OPO feels well... merely good whereas before it felt amazing. The S7 takes it up several notches and is absolutely stunning to look at and stunning to touch! If they made a Braille version for blind people, I know they’d love it!
S7 clearly wins over the OPO which is saying a lot.
DURABILITY
I don’t use cases, usually don’t use screen protectors and I don’t drop my phones. In two years, my OPO has taken one fall from the seat of my Tacoma onto rough pavement. That fall merely scuffed a corner before the phone landed face-first on the glass with no discernible scratches. If that had happened to the S7...
In favor of the S7, it has an IP68 rating which the OPO doesn’t. But, since I won’t treat even my S7 like a bath toy, the best moisture protection available is something both devices have—a careful owner.
OPO wins over the S7, which is totally expected. Don’t drop a glass & metal sandwich expecting great things!
DISPLAY
I’m fine with anything above 1080P. I have extremely good near-sighted vision and can occasionally discern pixels on the OPO, though it’s not a bother. So the S7 earns a hollow victory on this front if you ask me.
But I’ve missed SuperAMOLED, and the S7 reminds me why—the deep blacks extracted from a nearby black hole, better color saturation, and yawning viewing angles that are tough to beat.
Both are capable of great color accuracy. My July 2014 OPO doesn’t have the yellow band issue found in many early production models.
In favor of the OPO, it does have good enough viewing angles, but the best thing is that there is very little color shift (none?) at even deep viewing angles. As soon as an AMOLED screen goes off-center, the colors shift blue-green. Not so with the LCD on the OPO, though there is a significant drop in brightness.
S7 easily over OPO, though LCD does have its advantages.
AUDIO
A weakness of the OPO but a strength of the S7. The DAC (at least in the Exynos version) of the S7 is great and the speaker is by far better.
S7 over the OPO.
BATTERY LIFE
No contest here: The OPO is better than the S7 by a long-shot (maybe 25-35%) with a similar usage pattern. I know this isn’t very scientific, but I’m on the charger a lot more with the S7. It’s DEFINITELY better than the S3, S4 and Nexus 5 I had before the OPO. Both devices charge really fast, but the S7 is a bit faster.
OPO clearly over the S7, but the S7 is good enough for me.
CAMERA
Absolutely no contest here either. In low light, the S7 absolutely kills and buries the OPO. In high contrast situations, the HDR on the S7 is also miles beyond what the OPO is capable of. The fast focus on the S7 makes the OPO camera seem like jurassic technology. Only in great lighting during the day are the two phones comparable, but even then it's the S7. This is one major reason that I upgraded. I've attached some comparison pictures below. The S7 pictures are the first 4, the OPO the last.
S7 over the OPO in an unfair contest, like pitting the 2007 Dolphins against the 2007 Patriots.
PERFORMANCE
I don't care about benchmarks. I’m also not much of a gamer, so I don’t really care about frame rates, except that something in TouchWiz is crippling games with 2D graphics. I’ve looked under battery saver settings, Game Launcher and Game Tools, enabled “Force GPU rendering” under developer options, installed Samsung Game Tuner, all with no joy. Hopefully a future update will address this issue. The power is there, but something deep in TouchWiz is throttling it.
The S7 loads apps faster. I’ve also noticed that even though encrypted, the S7 runs circles around the OPO in USB transfer speed.
S7 over the OPO.
DEVELOPMENT
Samsung is trying to make it so that we can’t use the words “development” and “Galaxy” in the same sentence. On the other hand, the OPO’s development scene is as prolific as the bacteria culture flourishing on a 1,000 Riel bill that’s been passed around open-air markets in Cambodia for the last 10 years. If that makes no sense to you, let’s just say it’s on par with any Nexus device out there!
Since the only S7 that can be modded is the Exynos version, I may get some custom TouchWiz ROMs in the future.
No contest here, nor will it ever be—only the OPO showed up to this fight.
THEMES
I’m not a huge themer, but being able to apply an AOSP-like Marshmallow theme over TouchWiz is a great bonus. Nova Launcher puts the icing on the cake.
If this is your thing, both are good. Maybe a themer can chime in and add more.
Tie...
TL;DR
In my non-journalist and non-scientific completely subjective opinion, they both win and I'll be keeping both.
The OPO beats the S7 in unboxing experience, durability, battery life and development, an area which is as close to night (S7) and day (OPO) as possible.
The S7 beats the OPO in display, audio, camera, design, performance—basically every category relevant to the operation and use of the device except battery life and durability.
The bottom line is that I love the S7 and see myself keeping it for a long, long time. But, neither is the OPO for sale—I’ll be keeping it to satisfy my ROM flashing addiction.
If you’re thinking of moving from the OPO to the S7 and have the coin to do so, I think you should. Just make sure that you have something beside the S7 if you need a platform for flashing/customizing.
I have the S7EDGE and owned an opo for 1.5yrs. Its no contest, even battery life is miles ahead on the S7EDGE. All in all, the S7 is the most complete device on the market to date
Added pictures to the OP, from the OPO first, then the S7.
Very well written, thanks for posting your thoughts.
I can agree to nearly every sentence you wrote. I had an Opo for about 1 year and switched to the Galaxy S7 a few weeks ago. If I had not already switched, I would switch after reading your post. For me, the major reasons for me to use the S7 as my main phone were
1. camera
2. smaller form factor.
In the meanwhile I put my S7 in a spigen thin case, which adds better grip and increases the overall size minimally.
I don't have a OPO, but I guess in terms of smoothness it's like a nexus device: butter smooth. How do you guys the OPO smoothness to S7, in apps like chrome, YouTube, playstore... Is the S7 as smooth as the OPO?

I also made the switch the same time from a Opo as you. I really wish i didn't though. I don't like the edges (inadvertent taps), that its not rootable, sensibility issues, bloatware etc. I also had to get a glass protector, normally i don't do this but it scratches really really easily. So i don't like the feel of it. I would have liked to have waited for something better to have come out. My Opo lasted about year too. Normally my phones last longer but the audio insert broke on my phone and couldn't listen to music with out holding the cable in. The 2 for one special seemed like a great deal but too many draw backs.

I would have preferred to buy the Galaxy S7 with sandstone backcover and 64GB internal storage. I don't notice any inadvertent taps any more. Maybe it's the spigen case or it was fixed with the april update, I don't know. I don't have carrier bloatware, only the samsung bloatware (plus facebook), but most of it can be deactivated. If I feel the need to mess again with recovery and custom roms, I would turn on my opo again. In the meanwhile I am just using my Galaxy S7.
I too have switched from my opo to s7. Now that I think back, I miss having a 5.5 inch screen and the stock Android feels. As much as I dislike touchwiz, I was bought over by the awesome camera
Just ordered the Galaxy S7 yesterday. I too am coming from a OPO, which I'm not handing down to my wife. It has really served me well over the past two years. The things I'm most looking forward to is the smaller forfactor. 5.5" is just too large and one hand use is nearly impossible unless I'm running LMT launcher.
I'm getting the Exynos version and this time around I'm not planing on rooting. I've done that to every phone and tablet I've had since my HTC Wildfire. But this time I'm actually looking forward to just using the phone as it is. I've grown a bit tired of the stock android feel. To me it's just boring and bland, so it'll be great to once again being back on a UI that has more of complete feel to it that stock android (I know almost everybody will dissagree with me on this).
I feel like the rooting scene hasn't got much to offer anymore. "Back in the days" there where a lot to be gained from rooting. I overclock my Desire S from 1 ghz to 1.7 ghz and you could really feel the difference. Now the most used custom roms on the OPO underclock from 2.5 to 1.9 ghz, because the processor is fast and powerful enough at that freq.
All in all, I'm looking forward to getting my S7 with all it's pros and cons. Also I've ordered the Spiegen Neo Hybrid Case, 'cause I totally agree on OP views on durability.
BTW, wanted to add that the S7 charges crazy fast, even with the OPO'a charger.
Hi everyone. I apologize if this type of post is not allowed. I have been mulling over the s7e SNAPDRAGON and the HTC 10 for the past 2 weeks. Id buy the s7e on swappa so price is the same.
The biggest things for me are software feel, camera, and battery. I like stock android alot. So the htc 10 looks sweet. But then theres samsungs theme engine. Now Im coming from and S4 so theming was light if any. What I'm seeing from the s7e blows my mind. The only reason I used to room my s4 was for different themes so no root on the 820 doesnt bother me especially with the new theme engine. The fact it themes everything is amazing. Not sure if the HTC 10 does this or not but with stock android look its not as important but it would be nice to change it up every once in a while.
The camera on both of these phones look amazing. Expecially the low light. I know the s7e is a little better in low light but its not a huge enough difference to completely be the deciding factor for me. The focus speed on the s7e looks absolutely insane. I do like the over saturated look of the pics on the s7e but not the yellowish tint. Video also looks very stable and not shakey. The htc 10 looks to be on par with video.
Battery life looks like something the s7e beats the 10 easily. Ive seen the 10 get anywhere from 4-5 sot. The s7e 820 seems to get above 5 hrs sot? right? anyone chime in on this. On reddit and the forums its hard to tell sometimes if its exynos or 820.
Does the s7e ever get hot or warm to the touch? my s4 feels like a burning rock in my pocket sometimes lol. Hows tw lag? is it alot better than it used to be? or is it just good out of the box then it shows up again?
Speaker quality isnt a huge deal as all i watch are youtube videos or plug my phone into my car.
Updates are another thing that bothers me also. HTC has a very good record of updating phones fast. Samsung not so much. Well more so the carriers. The htc 10 i have preordered is unlocked. The S7e Id get is Tmobile variant. Id try to get exynos but Id like to get a phone with the manufactures warranty. Also hear the exynos is hard to get repaired as Samsung doesnt like to repair it in the USA.
The whole usb c vs micro doesnt bother me much but I do like that C seems to be more sturdy and durable.
so what doesnt everyone think I should do? Whats your experience compared to what Ive heard? Are my thots right? to servere? am I way off? All imput is welcome Anyone here in the same position or leaving the s7e for the 10? or just decided on the s7e over the 10 and why?
Thanks guys! :fingers-crossed::good::good:
S7 Edge Pros:
- Bigger screen at the same size (which is a really big deal)
- As far as camera and battery goes, I think the S7 Edge has a clear edge Dual-pixel tech in a smartphone is a very big deal, Canon still saves this technology for their very best cameras.
- Battery - 3600 vs 3000 mAh - enough said.
- Screen efficiency - AMOLED vs TFT (that's why you get great SOT on the S7 Edge, but poor standby times on the SD820)
- Wireless charging if you want to protect your USB port over time.
- Much better technical support if you need it (hopefully not). Much better country presence.
- If the Always-On Display will ever be upgraded to display all notifications (not only missed calls and SMS messages) this will be a huge pro
HTC 10 Pros:
- Always-on fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor needs home button press to work on the S7, which is stupid in 2016. It should be always-on. So I have it disabled, if it would be touch-only I would enable it.
- Speakers (but I don't care for this).

thanks for the reply How has ur experience been with touchwiz? Any lag? do you have the sd820? what sot do you usually get? Screen size isnt a huge deal for me .3 inches. Id rather have the battery life instead of AOD. Im not sure if id use wireless charging. The extra charging option would be nice incase but i always worry that the battery degrades faster over time with wireless charging. Having to clock the fingerprint home button is a negative for me. My s4 made an annoying crunch sounds when it was click. Its it a more shallow click now? Same for me I dont care really about speakers so there moot on the 10. Also for me its sense ui and faster updates vs Touchwiz and slow updates.

I have the Exynos.
I never hated TouchWiz and I think it is ok, no lag whatsoever, but I use Nova Launcher solely because I need double-tap to sleep. But I do have a dark theme set overall and it's great. Theming is a major plus.
The difference in screen size is big, around 20% in surface area. I had a 5.2" LG G2 and it's very noticeable.
The button clicking sound is bad enough and the press is not shallow. Home button is also raised (stupidly, should be sunken) and it could click in your pocket if you don't have a proper case. But I found a workaround, I hold the phone in the front pocket with the upper part down, this almost eliminates the issue.
About the updates, I don't really care, because it works really well as it is (except for the last update which ruined battery life for Exynos and made it similar to SD820). However, for the record, the International version received like 3-4 updates since launch, each brought something new (some good things, some really bad things).
Coming from someone who ended up hating touch wiz, I really dig it this time around. It's so much closer to stock and cleaner. They did good with it this time. I'm also coming from the HTC One M7 and M8, and I have zero interest in the 10.
The camera in the S7 blows away the HTC. I've seen a lot of screenshots of the HTC, and that and the S7 next to each other, and the HTC is actually fairly grainy. Pretty unacceptable, especially the last 4 phones, new one included having a bad camera. The S7 pictures are incredibly clear, the best I have seen on a phone personally. And the low-light is crazy.
The speaker on the S7 is actually very loud and fairly clear.
The screen size is much better on the S7 Edge. Plus the phone is almost the same size, another thing I hated about the HTC phones, they waste sooo much space on the phone.
The Edge places app is pretty convenient. It sets different settings on your phone based on location and/or WiFi/Bluetooth. Works great for me since I always forget to silence my phone when I get to work.
Can't say much about battery life in comparison since I have not read any real, long-term reviews on the HTC. But my S7 Edge gets nearly two full days in between charges on the regular.
Updates... I don't agree with you there regarding HTC. I have NEVER gotten an Android update within their 90 day BS. And that seems to be solely for new Android versions. Any updates to Android seem to either come way later than that, or never. My One M8 updated to Lollipop in March '15, then didn't get another update until December-which was not to fix anything, just Stagefright. And Lollipop did NOT work well at all, and HTC left us behind and wouldn't fix anything that was broken. That's where they really lost me.
Anyway, my $0.02

Well, their lack of doing something new for one. The M7 I think looked the best and was the best size. The 8 just got larger without much added to screen size. The camera was really bad. And this new one seems more of the same to me. All they did was chamfered the back, otherwise is identical to the M8 and M9, then they changed the front to look just like every other Android phone now, except the top and bottom bars are obnoxiously big.
Honestly, the biggest is definitely them leaving us in the dark with updates and letting our phones go on not working right indefinitely. You just can't decide to stop supporting your phones and customers if you want to stay in business. The M8 didn't even need the latest Android, it just needed HTC software fixes to make it work, but those never happened...
Anyway, to each their own. The 10 may be a bada$$ phone. I'm just really loving this Edge.

Snapdragon for Verizon. I had to meddle with the settings a bit, but I get nearly two full days every charge. I'm a fairly moderate user though, not really any gaming, just a lot of email (work), fitness stuff, and Facebook/LinkedIn/etc.

Sounds like me lol reddit email twitter youtube. Do you know how many hours of SOT you get? Ill be getting the tmobile snapdragon one
Honestly, just go to a store and play with each of them. Of course it's always personal preference.
S7E.
Why?
3600mah vs 3000mah
5'5 vs 5'2 display
Look of the s7e to me is nicer.
posting on the S7E thread, i guess you will get more positive for the S7E than the 10?
that being said, S7E for me. best phone i have owned.
Same. ?
If you want ROMs, root, and Xposed get the 10 or Exynos S7 edge.
If you were thinking s7 or m10 I'd probably say m10 but we have the edge and this phone is the best you can get, so I'd say S7 Edge no question.
Sent from my Gold S7 Edge
personal preference really
if size doesn't matter then HTC 10.
Speaker Sound HTC
Software HTC 10 (closer to stock)
Look Design S7E
XDA Development and support HTC 10
Camera Video S7E
Practical daily use HTC 10
Waterproof S7E
Due to HTC being only 5.2 i've gone with S7E bigger screen but i still hate TW.
So Hey guys! Couple of days ago I bought S7 Edge with a 24 month contract (thank God I can pay it quicker) cause my S6 fell apart. Later I even realised that it had fake PLASTIC back. Advice to other people. Better get new ones!
But let's go back to the main topic which is.. Should You leave/sell Your S6/Edge and get a S7/Edge?
Quick answer aka spoiler alert: YESSSS! You definitely should
Let's compare first couple of things. Like camera, performance, speaker, build quality, new features, battery life, custom roms, display quality and similar things.
1. Camera:
S6 has a 16MP camera with 16:9 aspect. And honestly this is the best camera I've ever used(on a phone, dslr's are a different topic) (even though it had a broken OIS in it and it was barely possible to get focus.) S7 Edge has 12MP Dual Pixel camera with 4:3 aspect and honestly.. it actually looks pretty nice. They somehow balanced this camera to take really pretty pictures even without 16:9 aspect (which on photo comparisons IS visible). Other than that S7 Edge takes really great quality photos. Even in COMPLETE DARKNESS! Detail wise both devices have quietly same amount of details on pictures If You look at two photo examples taken with both phones the only thing You'll notice is that S6 has 16:9 aspect and S7 Edge has deeper colours and handles the light a lot better.
I'll try to add some photos as a comparison later.
2. Battery:
S6 has a 2500mAh battery (i'll correct this later if it's slightly different) and S7 Edge (in my case) has a 3600mAh battery. A HUGE monster! I had to charge my S6 AT LEAST twice a day (once a day on stock kernel/rom without root). And my S7 Edge is really hard to discharge it! (running a custom kernel btw). I can play games with highest graphic settings, watch movies, browse the web, call people, text them and check my email etc and at the end of the day (6-8am I wake up) around 10-11pm my phone is at around 20%. Which is great! To get the same results on S6 I would need to charge it again around 3-4pm and then MAYBE it would have ~20% at the end of the day. And for the curious ones, I charge my phone overnight.
Screen on time for my S6 was around 3-4 hours and S7 Edge gets 5-6 hours (so far).
3. Display:
Both devices come with quite the same display but there is noticeable difference when it comes to colours!
My S6 always had a stunning display, but since I've switched to S7 Edge I could HONESTLY see more vibrant colours. The colour red before was really red, and now it's really really red! Maybe it's because the S7 Edge also has a brighter display (in this case I'm not sure if that happens to all s6 models or if it just was my faulty model, no idea).
Other than that S7 Edge has a 5'5 inch display which is in my opinion perfect size. I still can use my one hand to reach the other end of the screen. And watching movies on it finally feels better.
4. Performance
S6 has 3GB of LPDDR4 ram and S7 Edge has 4GB of LPDDR4 ram, both devices have octa core processors and well... I forgot what Ghz they both have but that isn't THAT important (use google and we all know that what it says on the box doesn't mean that the device will be super slow or super fast).
S6 gets around 80-90k score on antutu (the higher the more battery life suffers)
And S7 Edge gets around 130-140k score.
But the real question is. Is it really noticeably faster?
It is! TouchWiz seems a lot smoother on 6.0.1 just like S6 did on 5.1.1. And things like converting a video or unpacking zip/rar files also happen a lot faster. Other than that flashing roms or even that annoying green screen with cogwheels that takes like an hour to load all applications, now takes less than 10 minutes. Which is awesome! I'd say that both devices boot really fast and with S6 barely working I can't compare booting times but I would say that it's barely noticeable.
5. Features!:
S7 Edge has obviously an Edge display that is truly something amazing and makes certain apps look cool. But it's not as sweet and pretty as You would think! Sometimes when You hold the phone the screen gets locked up because the edge of the display is detecting touch. But it's really rare so don't worry about it.
Always on Display? Is it really that awesome and worth switching to S7? Well.. Nope. It is a nice thing that barely discharges like 1% of the battery and it makes Your phone look a bit cooler. But it's not something that I would switch my phone for.
Working edge features? Well. Here it actually gets quite more interesting. Some of those features are ACTUALLY useful, like night clock. Or edge feeds.
Fingerprint sensor/scanner. Definitely improved. It even seems a bit bigger but that might be just a illusion, other than that it recognises my finger with just one fingerprint registered (instead of like 3-4 on s6 that I used to have just so it would actually always work).
Speaker? Well. Quality and the volume is pretty identical in other words REALLY GREAT! .
SDCard slot is definitely a feature that is useful. You can insert a 128GB sd card and stop worrying about the running out space. Or keep custom roms on SD card without taking the phones space. Or anything You want. Or.. if Your phones USB stops working, You can put new rom on Your sd card and flash it this way!
Waterproofness!
Finally something really useful! And cool. I like to bath with my phone just so I can chill and listen to some music or watch a movie (i'm a bathtub lover.. lol) or text some people in the meantime. And finally! I don't need to worry about dropping my phone into water! Even though nowadays most phones are quite resistant to water damage. They still aren't fully waterproof. So IP68 is definitely a great feature!
If You have any questions ask me! I'll be happy to answer. And also I know I was mad at Samsung cause my phone was failing etc and I considered getting G5 cause it has a really awesome wide angle camera but when I realised that it has a tiny amount of features, not so pretty display, no custom roms, etc. I decided to get S7 Edge. And so far I LOVE IT!
I'm not good in writing article like topics so sorry guys!

Well. After my s6 was dead I had to get a new phone so yeah. But if Your S6 works well then You can safely wait a year or two and wait for a new model.
not worth the upgrade for me. wait for Galaxy S8 and see what it has or Note 7.
not worth for me too.
Indeed the edge s7 looks good but i cannot stand the loose volume buttons and power buttons...they are not built well on the edge versions...they move up and down like crazy and make it feel a cheap phone. on the flat version it s not like that..that s why i switched from an s6 edge to an s6 flat
waterproof, sd card, bigger battery but still...i have an s6edge and getting an s7edge would be a sidegrade, not worth it.
i hope the s8 bring something cool otherwise i wont be upgrading either.
It's not worth it. I mean yeah , it's waterproof , it has an sd card slot but still. I don't think it's worth it.
Hello XDA users!
As you probably know Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge was the highest selling Galaxy S phone of all time.
The prices of this device even now are on a quite high level (in EU for example).
What is it in Your opinion that makes this Galaxy edition so successful?
Is it for example: microSD slot, better cam performance in low light, the fear of infinity display in S8/S9s, IP67 certificate, better battery stamina per mAh?
Or maybe there is something else?
Keep in mind that for example the price drop of S8 edition is much faster than S7. Interesting, huh?
Low light Performance (not really better in S8, S9 i dont know)
Great Display (not really better in S8)
Last Samsung Flagship with Hardware Keys
I am very happy with mine
And the Problem for me is, there is AOSP ROMs for S7, but NOT for S8?! Dont understand why...

Indeed I forgot to mention: Last Samsung Flagship with Hardware Keys
With that and the fear of infinity display (bezel in S8/S9 makes people accidently touch and turn something on that they do not want, what do You think guys?)
BTW: I like keeping Samsungs intact so what is this AOSP thing?

AOSP refers to "Android open source Project"
just google it for more information.
Reason why i love S7 Edge
1. 26 days standby time if detox mode is activated
2. S7 edge (last good phone released by samsung)
i do not like 18:9 phones..its size is too big..phone must be in size of S7 edge (its perfect you know)
all other features that they have released on s8 ,s9 are useless for me
whenever i watch samsung new phone trailer..i keep asking...your phone size is getting bigger why can't your battery ?
i will most likely buy another new phone only if samsung delivers...
1. 4k display
2. More contrast and colors (a new display technology better than amoled)
3. Batteries above 6500mAh (IF THEY CAN BRING 512 GB SIZE ON A TINY SD CARD...They can obviously do something about increasing the capacity of battery...)
4. Improvements to audio (i know this s9 thing came with dolby but(auto, music, movie) why there is no tuning ?customization of our own ? like the dolby atmos by worstenbrood(i think dolby by samsung has still got audio restrictions)
5. and if xda provide root, custom rom for that phone ( it will be terrible to use stock rom of samsung...it's just crap bloatwares.. just don't like it
before i was bought s7 edge in 2016 (i was using s3 which i bought in 2011) so while i upgraded S3 to S7Edge (it was a huge upgrade for me)
lately samsung what do with their phones is making the phone size bigger, improving camera, processor, increasing RAM, Storage...adding useless features and bloating the phone very well
what's the point of upgrading it when i can't use all new features with full satisfaction or low brightness levels (always worrying about battery life draining fast )
No for me...i think samsung won't work on these features anytime soon for the next 3 years but atleast i'll be saving money not spending it on their new phone for these tiny upgrades...i really don't care.
Fingerprint sensor on the front. When the phone is sitting propped up in my wireless charging stand at work it is really nice to not have to take the phone off of the stand to reach around the back to use the fingerprint sensor. It's been a reliable device for me for 2+ years now. It's starting to show its age a bit, but it's held up quite well overall.
Hi all,
to me there are few points that make that phone great, but also making its successor NOT so great - hence the effect of S7e keeping the shape still...
It is a very subjective view, so not all may find that relevant for their perspective:
- fingerprint - it is in front that may appear somewhat oldfashioned these days but it is best placement if you use your phone on a deskstand or carkit. the successor (s8) has in the back and also in very unfortunate placement (non-centered) which I heard requires some time to adapt to
- hardware buttons - another oldstyle but some my find it more useful/functional, also s7 DOES NOT have bixby useless button
- better battery. both in capacity as well as in daily ops. period.
- I am not expert but seing many analysis on youtube - it seems the performance is also not an advantage of the successor - pretty comparable, same with camera quality
- and the best to the end - SCREEN - and here I have lot of thoughts as below.
of course the wider aspect ratio in s8 is a trendy one these days so again s7e with its 16/9 is a rep of an oldfashion stream - however to me it is all about the perception when you take the phone to hand yourself. I did not notice the effect until I started to use my s7e daily, especially in video media consumption. S7e wrapped screen is really 16/9 but as it is wrapped within that ratio - it is appearing more slim than 16/9 for sure. Still, as most of the media is 16/9 it still fills in perfectly leaving you with the impression it is just wider than 16/9. Hard to explain but I'm sure you know what I talk about.
When you have both in hands - S8 appear little small comparing to s7e, and that is due to its vertical lenght, also as for all non-standard screens - the 16/9 media needs to meet the compromise - either to accept the cropping or proportion flattening or black vertical bars. Not very convenient.
The point that I personally find unlucky - the screen rounding in s8 is way to big. I also use round-corner app (which in amoled works as a dream) but I am setting the rounding diameter on few milimeters, not a centimeter almost...
All that possibly make people keeping away from upgrade to s8, s8+ is possibly too big for some, s9 is too expensive yet. Similar concerns may come if you migrate from other brands... Let's see if the s7e attractiveness will keep still if s9 price goes down For the moment - I do not see better Galaxy.
