Cant root the device - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Hey,
So im having this weird issue
ive unlocked bootloader,flashed TWRP
for some reason it wouldnt let me see the files inside my internal storage so i had to change the file system type to FAT
so i installed Magisk afterward and tried to reboot
thats where the problems begin.. it just keep loading
Im kinda desperate

Changing your file system wipes the data on whatever partition you changed. Youre going to have to do a clean flash now, i recommend sticking with stock file systems and maybe f2fs on data if your rom supports it

and it didnt work either

https://sourceforge.net/projects/cheeseburgerdumplings/files/15.1/cheeseburger/recovery/
Try this recovery, wipe system and data then flash rom, boot, restart then flash magisk
You will have to setup device as new though, better make a backup of photos and stuff just in case

stock file manager can only open the sdcard directory, if u want to see other directory u need to install 3rd party file manager lke "Root Manager" which u can download on playstore for free. and u don't need to change ur system type to FAT, all u need to do is flash a custom recovery, install magisk/supersu to grant a root access for the rootmanager. Hope i'm not too late and this will help

[Q] Phone doesn't start properly after font flash

hello,
i rooted my Huawei and then used Root Tools to flash a font on it (don't remember which one it was).
Now my device seems to start, the hard buttons light up, but i get an infinite boot loop!
i can get into recovery, but i don't know how to get into fastboot.
I have already done a factory reset via recovery, but it keeps happening.
can anyone help me?
EDIT: also, since i cant get into the phone, i can't enable usb debugging to get to adb either... is there any way to force this or something?
Have you tried to wipe all phone-data and flash it with a rom?
Yeah, i've tried the flash all in recovery. i want the stock ROM though, do you have an update.zip for that? i'm pretty sure i can borrow a microSD card and put it on there.

So does it work with the rom you tried?
You can find the stock-rom on the huawei-device webpage if you haven't done a backup..

you should install perfect recovery, you can find it here on the ideos x5 development section and then wipe data and apply the rom you wan't, i think that should fix your phone

well, i'd want it to be as stock as possible, in case it needs to go to service once... but as for the stock rom, is that the kernel-2.6.32-U8800-Froyo file on huaweis website? should i just rename that to update.zip and use it?
EDIT: i saw your edit now, when i have downloaded the right .zip file(in this case the norway retail one), i'm going to rename that to be update.zip and upgrade with it, am i right?
EDIT2: okay, i'm just going to follow the instructions in the zip folder one final question: how do i check my build number?
yes you can rename it, but it's not even necessary because you can choose the file (rom) you want to install later in perfect recovery. Or are you using something else then perfect recovery?
I have no idea about the instructions in the zip folder, because i haven't installed any stock roms on my phone, and can't understand what you need the build number for?
I suggest you to try to install that stock rom because you have nothing to lose and it's easy to wipe data again and try with other roms again..

Thanks! i downloaded the corresponding zip file for my carrier, unzipped, and just followed the instructions in the pdf file
The phone works great now! i am very happy now
This happened to me this morning!! Is there anyway to fix this in Recovery mode by mounting /system or something and rename the backup of the font back?
I don't want to delete everything off the phone! I have been customizing it for the past 2 or 3 weeks.. and was getting it exactly how I wanted it.. Don't want to do it all over again
EDIT: PHEW.. I fixed it. All you have to do is rename every font back to how it was originally (hope you have a backup) and set the permissions back to how they were originally CHMOD 644
If you need more help let me know, tell me which OS you have.. if you have Ubuntu / Linux I can help you.. no problem, as for windows.. I don't know
for windows the procedure is pretty much the same, i guess you used adb
That is what I love about ubuntu.. no I did not have to use adb. It automatically mounted the drives when I booted in recovery mode, then browsed system partition as root user (using natalius script.. or you can use a terminal) then set the permissions of the fonts to 644, make sure all the fonts are named exactly (CASE SENSITIVE).
Reboot and it will work.

[Q] Acer Recovery Installer

Acer Recovery Installer from the app store says it is a brainless install of CWM for our device. Has anyone had any luck using it to install Primee or any other ROM?
Dunno if right forum but works great, I myself installed newest Clockworkmod from sdcard using this. I suggest you download newest version from here. And name it as recovery.img on you sdcard then install that one using Acer Recovery Installer
EDIT: Have tested PRIMEE and PICASSO both working great. Ask if you need more help.
Thanks for the feedback! i am blown away that now with 2 apps, you can have a rooted custom rom on the a500. go devs!
(I was unsure if it went here or apps, mods feel free to move it or kill it entirely.)
Yes it does work!!! Perfectly!!
I used the Acer Recovery Installer and it was SOOO EASY!!! I was able to flash PRIMEE AND the PICASSO ROM's so they do work.
Just FYI though, if your RECOVERY is not able to MOUNT THE SD CARD then try to use another one because it is very touchy... Not even re-formatting makes it recognize it... I dont know if its a limit to the size but I used an 8gb sandisk and it did not recognize, but my 1gb sandisk ran just fine with it... jejeje
Just my 2 cents... jejeje
I also have used this to install the PICASSA rom. Very easy! No hassle whatsoever

I just want to make sure how to get back to stock if I need to send it to repair center. If I backup the old recovery using the recovery install app, and do a full backup using CWM recovery, can I return to stock simply by restore the full backup and the old recovery? Thanks!

lol what is so brainless about it, i have used adb to install through command and used the recovery installer, only difference i seen was the recovery installer was much faster no need to type commands to flash. and the installer makes it simple to roll back if needed

Absolutely correct. Do full cwm restore, to get back to stock rom. Then use this app to restore your stock recovery that you backed up. On a side note, if /system/install-recovery.sh in your stock rom is still executable (enabled), then stock recovery will be restored automatically.

Sorry for the noob question but there are two 1.3.4 archive files: update-recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.3.4.zip and recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.3.4.rar. I downloaded and opened both and while they both contain recovery.img the zip file has the image in a CWM folder.
Does it matter which one I use and do I need to extract recovery.img or simply rename the entire archive to recovery.img?
Thanks for the help...

I'm pretty sure the image in both are the same (correct me if I'm mistaken). The zip is packaged to be run as an update from within clockworkmod. Whereas the rar file just as the image for you to flash manually (or with Acer Recovery Installer), which now has 1.3.4 built-in.

It looks like images contained in the files are the same (same file size anyway). Moot point now since as you pointed out the new version has 1.3.4 built in - but thanks for taking the time to respond.

Are you backing up to the micro sd or the usb? I was getting an error backing up data to usb. Not sure why it would have a problem, but I was only able to do a backup to micro sd.

Use With "Official 3.1"
The Market installs version 1.5. As I updated to the "Official 3.1" , can I assume that Recovery Installer 1.5 will install CWM on my Iconia and then I can install other ROM's? If so, any special precautions (aside from backup)?

It will install CWM just fine, as long as you tell it to do that. If you don't, it won't.
As for precautions. Yes, absolutely yes, back up your current ROM from within CWM before flashing a new one. There have been WAY too many complete planks begging for help in restoring to stock lately because they either can't read, or think they know best, and didn't bother backing up.
I didn't make a backup because my Acer had German only language and I wanted to flash Official English rom in any case.
But could someone tell me what was the rom version that cam with Acer in the UK?
Was it COM_GEN1 or something else. I doubt that I'll return to stock (ever) but it would be nice to know.

Power off then hold power, volume up and the home key. Once you see the Samsung s4 screen let go of the power but not the home and volume. Then your recovery should come up

whats u r seeing is the download mode. to flash a kernel you need a custom recovery installed. what the other user suggested to do will take u to stock recovery which u cant flash kernels from it.
root your phone then goto play store download goomanager then flash recovery script then reboot. u will have twrp recovery. once inside u can flash custom kernels and roms.

From this point you will have needed to copy the zip for whichever kernel you intend to run to your internal SD card. Get yourself into a custom recovery and choose Install Zip From File, navigate to the zip you copied, and select install.
Additionally, you should always wipe cache and dalvik before installing a new kernel to keep things safe.

Interesting because I haven't needed to do that since I've had the OG Evo. Then again not everyone is command-line savvy which is why I recommended my method.

Negative, stock kernel. Clean install...
My suggestion is to get the latest TWRP or CWM and factory reset, wipe system, and delvik cache. Then flash the rom again. It is possible you also have a corrupted download. Use an MD5 checker on the ZIP to make sure it isn't corrupted. If you don't want to start over you can also flash the auto root from chainfire from this link.
http://download.chainfire.eu/297/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-mako-occam-nexus4.zip
So I got around to it. Clean wipe, fresh from the start, install latest nightly of CM10, gapps, and no go. It says it's giving romtoolbox Pro permissions, but it can't delete anything. I authorize the computer to communicate through adb, and it forgets after a reboot...
The only thing is that I'm running Philz touch latest recovery...
Have you tried installing supersu? I found that a lot of apps have problems with the default super user.
I guess your /system doesn't have the right permissions. It's maybe set to read only.
IF not.. > Check your developer options and give root access to adb and apps

Wifi and sim card not working

So recently I was having some fun with magisk modules. I was on pixel experience 11 plus and all worked fine but then I found a module for some photo processing . After reboot it started to boot loop. I wasn't worried it already happened couple of times. I did my buckup and reinstalled the rom. I did all good but I lt keeps on boot looping. I installed stock miui and it worked but the second it turned on it says android setup isn't responding. I couldn't turn on the wifi, sim card wasn't reading so I tried again to install pixel experience but it's the same thing. Can't use my phone and I tried a lot of things. Is there any way to repair this manually? Like copying some files?. Plzzzz help
What did you do already?
You messed your system. Make a full wipe, partiton and install stock rom.
When I had samsung it was caused by modem - you can try to flash only some modules, but it will take some time to sort things out

I did all the wipes and yet nothing worked or I did it wrong.
Ive heard about this modem or nhlos files or something like that but I don't really know where to search for this stuff.
Ive rooted my phone to install root explorer. Now I know that installing another Rom wouldn't change anything and instead I have to find a right file to flash or copy. I will do an update if anything works. Thanks for respond

When switching ROM, you should Format Data, not just wipe (not the same thing in TWRP) - you can still do it now.
And flash the tgz MIUI firmware by XiaoMiFlash, not just the zip firmware by TWRP. Or, at least flash also the vendor zip firmware
