[Q] Acer Recovery Installer - Acer Iconia A500

Acer Recovery Installer from the app store says it is a brainless install of CWM for our device. Has anyone had any luck using it to install Primee or any other ROM?

Dunno if right forum but works great, I myself installed newest Clockworkmod from sdcard using this. I suggest you download newest version from here. And name it as recovery.img on you sdcard then install that one using Acer Recovery Installer
EDIT: Have tested PRIMEE and PICASSO both working great. Ask if you need more help.

Thanks for the feedback! i am blown away that now with 2 apps, you can have a rooted custom rom on the a500. go devs!
(I was unsure if it went here or apps, mods feel free to move it or kill it entirely.)

Yes it does work!!! Perfectly!!
I used the Acer Recovery Installer and it was SOOO EASY!!! I was able to flash PRIMEE AND the PICASSO ROM's so they do work.
Just FYI though, if your RECOVERY is not able to MOUNT THE SD CARD then try to use another one because it is very touchy... Not even re-formatting makes it recognize it... I dont know if its a limit to the size but I used an 8gb sandisk and it did not recognize, but my 1gb sandisk ran just fine with it... jejeje
Just my 2 cents... jejeje

I also have used this to install the PICASSA rom. Very easy! No hassle whatsoever

I just want to make sure how to get back to stock if I need to send it to repair center. If I backup the old recovery using the recovery install app, and do a full backup using CWM recovery, can I return to stock simply by restore the full backup and the old recovery? Thanks!

lol what is so brainless about it, i have used adb to install through command and used the recovery installer, only difference i seen was the recovery installer was much faster no need to type commands to flash. and the installer makes it simple to roll back if needed

Even I would like to know the same. I am now on the Prime ROM and have taken the full backup of the existing stock ROM.
Thanks

Absolutely correct. Do full cwm restore, to get back to stock rom. Then use this app to restore your stock recovery that you backed up. On a side note, if /system/install-recovery.sh in your stock rom is still executable (enabled), then stock recovery will be restored automatically.

Sorry for the noob question but there are two 1.3.4 archive files: update-recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.3.4.zip and recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.3.4.rar. I downloaded and opened both and while they both contain recovery.img the zip file has the image in a CWM folder.
Does it matter which one I use and do I need to extract recovery.img or simply rename the entire archive to recovery.img?
Thanks for the help...

I'm pretty sure the image in both are the same (correct me if I'm mistaken). The zip is packaged to be run as an update from within clockworkmod. Whereas the rar file just as the image for you to flash manually (or with Acer Recovery Installer), which now has 1.3.4 built-in.

It looks like images contained in the files are the same (same file size anyway). Moot point now since as you pointed out the new version has 1.3.4 built in - but thanks for taking the time to respond.

Are you backing up to the micro sd or the usb? I was getting an error backing up data to usb. Not sure why it would have a problem, but I was only able to do a backup to micro sd.

Use With "Official 3.1"
The Market installs version 1.5. As I updated to the "Official 3.1" , can I assume that Recovery Installer 1.5 will install CWM on my Iconia and then I can install other ROM's? If so, any special precautions (aside from backup)?

It will install CWM just fine, as long as you tell it to do that. If you don't, it won't.
As for precautions. Yes, absolutely yes, back up your current ROM from within CWM before flashing a new one. There have been WAY too many complete planks begging for help in restoring to stock lately because they either can't read, or think they know best, and didn't bother backing up.

I didn't make a backup because my Acer had German only language and I wanted to flash Official English rom in any case.
But could someone tell me what was the rom version that cam with Acer in the UK?
Was it COM_GEN1 or something else. I doubt that I'll return to stock (ever) but it would be nice to know.

Fresh Start

So i had to Odin back to stock because in whatever rom i used i wouldnt get vibration for text messages. This worked fine and i flashed back to eugenes stock jk2 that was prerooted. Now i need to install new roms again and im having trouble. I have rom manager installed and superuser was already there. I got the rom on the sd card (tried with multiple roms), but when i go to flash the roms it fails because it can't verify the signature. Even when i go to fix permissions and reboot my phone like rommanager tells me to it cant flash a new rom. On the other roms i had i would just go to advanced options in recovery and disable verification checks but with the stock recovery i cant do this. So my main question is why isnt this option in cwm recovery and how can i get it there so i can start getting roms again. Thanks for anyone who takes the time to read this...
Make sure that you have CWM recovery flashed onto your phone using odin. Also make sure that whatever rom you install is on agreement with your software version.

yea maybe i need to try one of eugenes roms because its his froyo version? i have cwm because i installed it through rom manager (well at least i think i have it)

Are you putting the rom on the internal memory?
Yea i copied it to the iternal sd, i see it on the internal sd, but the only way to reflash it is to rename it update.zip becauae all i can do is reinstall system packages
You have to download cwmrecovery, plug your phone in while in download mode and put cwmrecovery onto your phone. Just installing rom manager doesn't cut it and trying to flash anything will give the exact errors you're talking about.

You put the rom Just on the internal sd card not any folders right?
its doesent matter at least for me if the rom is right there or in a folder no difference just file called update.zip need to be there (not in the folder )
and no ! u cant flash clockwork recovry thru odin ! loL both of these program u mentioned are intended to flash roms not to be flashed as rom p u can flash in clockwork recovery if the rome is made for it which would be packed with .zip file if its odin file it would be .tar not every rom is flashable thru odin or clockwork depends how devs made it

Yea it was on the internal sd, i mean iv probably flashed 20 different roms and i know how to move them between different file folders and how to access them ect... The only problem is basically that im stuck in stock which has a different recovery

Here is the update.zip that will flash you into clockwork from stock recovery. Put this on your phone's internal sd, reboot to recovery, and hit "reinstall packages". If your phone reboots to stock recovery again, hit reinstall packages again and the second time it should put you right into Clockwork Recovery. Good Luck.
Thank you this is what iv been looking for

What rom are you currently running, still on Eugene's JK2? If you Odin'd a stock file, you may have 2e recovery, not the modded 3e. Check this thread, it may help you out with the stock recovery issue. In fact untermensch mentions this kind of issue specifically in the OP. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423

[Q] Stock ROM->Cyanogen Via Androot and RomManager?

Is it possible to go from Stock ROM to CyanogenMod via this path:
1. Using Universial Androot to root
2. Install RomManager from the market
3. Install Clockworkmod recovery 3.0.6 from Rom Manager
4. Install CyanogenMod from RomManager
That would be very easy compared to using adb. And it does not require a PC like the various one click root methods.
It should work?
I am asking because these optiions are already in the cyanogenmod wiki (some of them put there by me)
And if it works without problems, it should probably be the recommended update path.
I might try it out myself, but it requires me to go back to stock rom, which I haven't done before. If I understand correctly, it is not possible to flash a 1.6 ROM from a new Clockworkmod recovery, I would have to go back to maverick or amon ra recevery?
I am running Cyanogenmod nb 12, and clockworkmod recovery 3.0.6 at the moment.
to get back to stock rom, you just have to connect your phone to the PC, and double click the .exe of the ROM
I am not using windows, and do not have a rom exe file. I rooted and flashed my phone via adb on linux. I do have a nandroid backup of my stock room after it was rooted though.
Then flash back the old amonra recovery, before restoring your backup because it won t work with the latest clockworkmod

Uhm... I think not: is missing the "insmod tattoo-hack.ko" and it will fail the "remount" operation (and then the flash).
IMHO.

Well, i had a CyanogenMod "installed" on my tatto, and i flashed it back to the stock 1.6 rom without installing anything, without problem.
i guess that's the question, isn't it?
I used the method you're saying, Androot+Flash Recovery from Rom Manager to the latest ClockworkMod and unfortunately it's not working.
I don't know if it is because the new clockworkmod but my advice is don't use this method. I posted some questions in other threads but nobody could help me.
I reflashed Clockwork several times even to 3.0.6, but the startup recovery menu still the same.

CWM recovery not working on HC 3.2.1

After the OTA 3.2.1 update, CWM Recovery would just not install. After flashing the CWM recovery image on stock 3.2.1 and rebooting into recovery, I get the android guy with the exclamation mark. I saw another person in the CWM thread having the same issue.
I did flash CWM before on HC 3.2 successfully, but for some reason it is not working after the last OTA update.
Any thoughts ?
Any luck on this? I'm trying to root my Xoom 3.2.1 and have no idea what to do and looks like the one click tool has been removed...any direction is better than no direction ;-)
Thanks!!

I had this same issue yesterday.
Use adb and fastboot to manually install clockwork again...and then if you need to root you can use one click root.
I would give you the code for fastboot command but I'm not home.

well, it seems that you need to immediately boot up into CWM recovery after flashing it without letting your device boot up completely, then you need to root it from there to retain the CWM recovery. This worked for me.

Yes. What I did is backup everything, flash back to stock, wait for my device to download and install the 3.2.1 update, and finally flash the recovery, root my device, and install the tachi kernel. Restored all my applications after making sure that everything is fine.
I know it looks like a long a process but google market applications restore saved me a lot of time.

To save even more time and get back your app data, first back up aps and data in Titanium Backup and make sure the backup is on your external sdcard, just to be safe. Then, after wiping, and once you have rebooted, reinstall TB and then run a batch restore of missing apps and data. It is much faster and better than letting google restore the apps.
.

Even simpler... fastboot flash just boot, system, and recovery stock images. Leave userdata alone. Allow the update. Don't worry about letting it fully boot.. let it.. no harm.. but no root.
Then flash CWM (using fastboot).. boot to recovery.. CWM univ root. Good to go. Or CWM a different kernel

Check "Root, Install ClockworkMod + Remove Bundled Apps from Official 2.3.5 by That-guy" link in my signature. It has guide to install clockworkmod, which you will use to install roms.
The only way (I think) is to backup those infos with titanium. I do not recommend it, because it might cause force closes in ICS if you restore them. After making backups and putting ICS zip to sdcard, reboot to recovery. You do this by booting phone while holding volume +.
Choose backup & restore and backup in there. Then do factory reset and then go advanced -> wipe dalvik
After it choose: install zip from sdcard and choose zip from sdcard from there.
Now navigate to ICS .zip file and choose it. Now choose reboot to system. It should start loading ICS now.

It doesn't create a backup of imei. I have a link to full phone backup in my signature too. it requires a linux pc and unlocked bootloader. You can check is your unlocked by booting to pinkscreen and plugging the phone to pc. If pc can use phones memory, bootloader is unlocked. If it's not, there is a link (again) in my signature. Help! CWM not installed properly?! Bricked devices?

Hi folks,
5 day ago i rootet my tablet 16GB WE and installed Koshu`s CWM step by step like discribed in his threat [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831161]. At the end there was an error message..., i was too quick and made an reboot bevor i could read it.
But i tested if i rooted the tablet succesfully and the superuser-app said that i am root now....
Then i installed the v.0.8.1 Version and everything was fine!
a few days later i got reboots during normal use.
Now i cant boot in the OS, there are bootloops the hole time.
I think that i have not installed the CWM correct...
Any ways to check this with adb commands or something else?
It would be great if someone could help me....

You can still boot into CWM? Well you could make a backup of the installed recovery (like shown in the CWM thread) and check if the md5sums are equal to the downloaded image. Btw. linebreaks in the logcat would really help reading it

yes i can Boot into CWM, but i cant restore my backup. I tried to install cm10 clean again but after rebooting CWM and booting the OS Android is updating the apps. But i did a full wipe bevor.Thats why i think that the CWM is not in an good state.
i am in the road and maybe i can later check the md5sum.
I can attach an picture from the CWM during trying formating and fixing permissions.

yes i can Boot into CWM, but i cant restore my backup. I tried to install cm10 clean again but after rebooting CWM and booting the OS Android is updating the apps. But i did a full wipe bevor.Thats why i think that the CWM is not in an good state.
i am in the road and maybe i can later check the md5sum.
I can attach an picture from the CWM during trying formating and fixing permissions.
thank you!

I linked a zip file in the CM10 Thread that formats the data partition: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846044
You can find it in the "addition steps" section. Beware that it will delete all your personal data including the internal sd-card (also nandroid backups if you have stored them on the internal sdcard). So make sure you have EXTERNAL backups if you want to keep some of the data.
I have same problem

I have nearly the same problem.
I rooted my TPT a few weeks ago, today I was reading about Cyanogen and decided to install CWM. After some issues with the adb drivers, I managed to install the clockwork recovery.
Now I followed the steps from the cm-thread. I did a nandroid backup and wiped my tablet. After that, I flashed CM10. But all I get is the CyanogenMod logo spinning around.
I tried to go back to my nandroid backup, but it seems broken somehow.
I also tried several several CM-versions and downloaded them several times, without success. But I realised, that the installation procedure of CM was very quick, too quick maybe? Could it be that my clockworkmod isn't installed correctly, because the installation of CM and the nandroid backup won't work.
I hope you guys can help me out. Because I only could find nandroid backups for ROW and US version. I also don´t have adb access anymore.

But how can formatting my data partition help? You mean after a format, the installation of cm would work?
And how do I use the .zip, just flashing with cwm?

You have to download the formatdata.zip on your external sd-card.
After that you can boot in the recovery and flash this .please dont juse the cwm! Do you know how to boot into the recovery?
Power on and during that you should drop-down the volume + key a few seconds.
This helped me and others.
Please read in this threat: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831161

Here is the photo.
I was thinking about 2 possible solutions right now.
1. get another nandroid backup (Problem didnt see any for the 16gb WE version)
2. try no reflash another CWM version or maybe ventana cwm and try again to flash Cyanogen (don't know if its possible to just flash another recovery as an image with the current working recovery)
So what do you guys think?
Ottilooping -
You were running ICS before flashing to CM, right?

Problem solved. CM is running. Thanks for your help, exspecialy to you tpauli.
The formatdata.zip was the key
One last question. I am using the folio keyboard with an european layout (qwertz), but with Cyanogen it is us layout (qwerty). How can I change this?
