PSA: VZW is watching - Google Pixel 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

So I did the VZW Pixel 2 bootloader trick. A few minutes ago I got a SU request from a My Verizon Services app. Needless to say I denied it. Personally if I were any if you, I'd go delete that from System/Priv-apps or freeze it with Titanium Backup. If just delete it with a file explorer, you'll have to do that with every OTA. If you freeze it, it'll stay frozen and disabled until you do a data wipe.
Also, don't accept that SU request or one you don't recognize. VZW will know you're rooted then, and you'll be out of a warranty. Which we probably will be anyway because they're likely going to block VZW bought Pixel 2s from relocking the bootloaders on a future bootloader update.

You realize by denying it they can detect it as well. A non-rooted user would never see a prompt.

they arent necessarily just tracking u or pixel owners lol.. this has been known for a looong time.. they use it for a number of things but obviously to collect data.. disable it sure but i wouldnt worry abput big red bangin on ur door lol
on my S8+ it would even say in my getprop "vzw.os.rooted=1" lol

Thanks for sharing but it has been this way for years. Nothing to worry about.

vzw vs projectfi
Looking for a forum to explore differences between getting phone from Google Store and using ProjectFI or going with VZN for phone and service ... So starting with this topic and will welcome any pointers to a discussion of shopping advice ... But this topic seems like there might be something to consider re: VZN Network and FI.
Looking forward to participating here ... Many more topics I need to consider.
Best !
Steve

I have Pixel 2 I bought from Google store. None verizon version. Using it just fine with Verizon, and never bothered to install Verizon crap.

Verizon R800x owners are completely hosed.

Google searches tell me that I'm not alone in this - in fact, as far as I can determine, this is the case for every single Verizon r800x owner who made the mistake of updating their phone to 2.3.4 a few months ago.
2.3.4 completely broke push data, as I'm sure many of you know. Gmail, Calendar, Facebook notifications, etc...none of it works, at all. A sync has to be forced by either manually refreshing in the app, or turning auto-sync off and on again. This is a pretty huge problem - I pay over $150/month so that I can get important e-mails when they come in, and so that I can make a calendar appointment on my computer and have it instantly pushed to my phone.
For r800i users this isn't a huge deal - they can just flash a new rom or rollback to 2.3.3. r800x owners, on the other hand, are stuck with a locked bootloader. ZergRush is great for people who are still on 2.3.3, but 2.3.4 patched the security hole that allowed ZergRush to work (hellions with blue flames...).
I've spent about 6 combined hours on the phone with both Verizon and Sony about this. Sony is COMPLETELY worthless. They have no idea what I'm talking about when I say 'push data,' and when I mention 'Facebook notifications,' they instantly start up with their script about troubleshooting the built in Facebook app. Useless. Verizon wants nothing to do with this issue - they say that if there is an issue with the phone hardware, it is Sony's fault, and Verizon is not liable. The best that Verizon is offering me is to spend another 3 hours on the phone with tech support, where they'll have me reboot the phone 15 times and **** around with auto-sync for a while before they declare it a known issue and send me a new phone of the same model. I've been informed that all phones that they would have in the warehouse would be updated to the latest firmware, so I'd just have a new 2.3.4 that would be as broken as the one I have now. They'd do that 3 or 4 more times before they finally gave me a different phone. They are refusing to cancel my contract or allow me to buy a new phone at an upgrade price. Am I unreasonable for thinking that, if services are no longer being provided to me as I understood that they would be when I signed the contract, I should be allowed out of the contract?
Has anyone had ANY success with this issue? To phrase my question more specifically: have any Verizon R800x owners who updated their phones to 2.3.4 managed to root or unlock their phones, or get Verizon to alleviate the problem in any way?
This is driving me absolutely insane. I'm pretty close to just selling this piece of **** on eBay and buying a pay-as-you-go phone at the gas station down the block.
Cant you flash 2.3.3 with flashtool?
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk 2
You can just reflash the 2.3.3 ftf... then root with zergrush and rename the files FOTA.apk that will prevent the phone from receiving the update. Or even better unlock your bootloader. I unlokced mine last summer and totally worth it. You do have options with your phone even if the bootlaoder is unlocked... if you are rooted you restore a 2.3.3 nandroid.

I'm pretty sure flashtool doesn't work on R800x, only R800i. Also the R800x does not have a bootloader that can be unlocked to my knowledge, only the R800i.
Flash tool works on r800x. I broke my CPU & touch screen so best buy gave me a replacement. Then I downgraded to 2.3.3 to root before I unlocked it.

Dude... I am on a R800x. With an unlocked Bootloader. Many many R800x users here have an unlocked bootloader. Some had it done last summer via an unlock code like me, or others unlocked via the user alejandrissimo who unlocks your phones bootloader for $24. And this fee he charges is NOT because alejandrissimo makes money on. The software he uses to unlock your bootlaoder charges a fee for certain aspects of teh software each time he uses it. So the $24 fee you pay goes straight to the software, he make $0 on it.
There is info all over this forum about how to unlock your bootloader, root, flash an FTF on CDMAs..

Trying to help you. Yes VZ blows balls, but you have choices. You can spend a little time and learn how to reflash your phone back to 2.3.3 (if you do remember to rename FOTA.apk to FOTA.apk.bak, so it wont try to auto install 2.3.4)
Good luck. Again, let us know how it goes.
EDIT: Here is a thread with many R800x users saying that alejandrissimo has unlocked their phones.

all I've ever done was remove the Mobile Care app with Titanium Backup and my phone has yet to ask me for an update since. This is when I was on 2.3.2 and now that I'm on 2.3.4.
I don't think I have any issues with push notifications on 2.3.4, but then again I don't use the gmail or normal mail app. i used Enhanced Email and juicedefender. Juicedefender enables data when I turn my screen on and also every 30 mins or so if the screen is off that long. I get email notifications generally between when they are sent and 15 mins later.
As jgregoryj1 said, flash tool works just fine with the R800X straight out of the box, locked boot loader and all. One important thing, when you flash back to 2.3.3 make sure to get root (very simple with super one click; again works with locked bootloader) and use titanium back up to disable the app called mobile care. Otherwise your phone will automatically update to 2.3.4. Even if you tell it not to update it will still do it in the middle of the night unless you uninstall/freeze mobile care

I hate that both Sony and Verizon are pointing fingers at each other and then taking a way an update because not as many games will work on the phone. Come on! It should be up to me, and they should be working to make my phone run as best it can for the two years I'm stuck with it!

Finally got an answer and you all are not gonna like it:
Tommy_861, I can understand why it would be upsetting for features to stop working that previously did before. Per our product team, connectivity issues with Google Talk were found to be caused by changes to Google's encryption servers and this is no longer supported by the Xperia Play. I apologize for any inconvenience. The issue with Gmail sync has been reported, but I don't have any info on when this will be resolved. For Facebook, are you using the application or the browser? If an application, try using the browser.

someone named poorxperiaplay replied and called them on it, then I replied as well:
I agree with poorxperiaplay here. The problem is directly related to all Google services not just Gtalk, thats why Gmail doesn't sync right, nor does the calendar, nor does it work right when you pick out an app on the Google Play web site on your PC and try to install from there. It never live syncs with the server.
You can't just take out features like that because you broke them and then say sorry. People rely on the Google services, its why we bought an Android Phone! Not only that, ALL other versions of the Xperia Play, R800i, R800a, R800at, all run 2.3.4 official from Sony successfully. Verizon modifies it for roll out to their phones, to add their software, which means your product team broke it, and they aren't spending the time to fix it.
And yes the facebook application does not sync properly or even work properly on 3G either. The sync issue has been a problem from day 1. The web site on the phone works fine.
These are major issues that are fundamental to all R800x phones. This needs to be fixed, immediately.

Updates post-root, without bricking? (kitkat update used a recovery image?)

Hey guys,
I'm picking up my Note 3 on Tuesday. Gonna stay on the stock firmware out of the box, no OTAs will be allowed. Gonna root with Kingo. I dont wanna mess with recoveries or anything other than disabling software update to prevent kitkat from being pushed. I realize it could be an advantage however as I could then in the future use the 4.4.2 update as a type of recovery image, if I need to send it in for service or sell it. I know about sammobile and all other "offical" stock tars floating around but they arent really from Samsung. They dont even release recovery images for the dev edition! Kingo wont trip knox and I wont be modifying any system apps (I may even opt with using a permission denying app to block SDM from having network access, instead of freezing it, as it's less aggressive). I will make an ADB backup pre-root and restore it before updating as well.
If the time comes I could use Kingo or Superuser to unroot, wanam to fake the status as offical, adb restore and have the samsung experience store guys flash kitkat or use the OTA which, assuredly, would remove any and all traces of root. Sounds divine.
So will the update process, whether from the Samsung guys or OTA brick my phone if I do it? I should have everything removed by doing it this way. I don't like the idea of messing with all these different recovery tars as they arent 100% official. Just wanna make sure the Sammy update wont brick it, because it knows, somehow.
I'm in the same boat though worse off than you since I don't know how to do an adb backup. Sounds to me like Kitkat sucks and I just want to stay stock mje and block updates.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk 2
There is nothing in the kitkat update that's essential. I know because I have it on my Nexus 10 and I wish I didn't. Rooted with SDM and bloat frozen. Will not update until they give me a really good reason to.

Yeah I agree with everything here. Kitkat totally sucks and I'm gonna stay on 4.3 for the duration of my phones life. But my question is, are we able, after rooting, to update officially to kitkat, be it an OTA or going to a samsung store and having them flash (without bricking it). I'm asking because I think it'd be a flawless way of reverting "back" (forward actually, from 4.3) to a genuine Samsung system after root. This would solve warranty worries or selling the device as rooted problems. The update would serve as a recovery image or the ultimate unrooting tool.
Just curious if it will brick the phone if done. If I need warranty service or to sell it, I dont want to go the sammobile odin route or any of the other "official" tars, because they're not 100% genuine. If we don't modify the stock rom and can use something like wanam to fake the sytem status and Knox isnt tripped, why would it not take the update perfectly? All this caution, an ADB pre-root restore and I'm pretty sure/hoping it would work wonderfully to get to a genuine samsung status, post root, for selling or service needs. Just need some clarification if it would actually work or bork the phone with an "unauthorize software detected" screen.
If kingo unroot works just unroot then accept the update no?

It'd be nice but from what I understand the update does some kind of checking to see how/what you modified. Kingo doesnt trip knox but any root with change the system status as "modified" instead of "official", which could interfere with updates. There is a well kown "unauthorized software detected" sign that comes up sometimes after update attempts. Not sure what triggers it though. Unrooting via Kingo doesnt nessisarily remove 100% of the root. This is what we'd use the KitKat update for, unless, it bricks it somehow because it's able to detect that you once rooted. But if you were cautious, didnt mod much, didnt mess with system files, did an adb restore and faked the system status with wanam, it's plausible to think you could accept an update afterwords without issues. But also, Im not sure if wanam will be able to fake the status after you unroot...
I don't want to take the update. I will disable the updater files once rooted. otherwise, i remain stock. when the time comes reenable updater files and immediately run kingo unroot. presto, all mods gone. now accept update. that wont work?

This is what I'm trying to ascertain. I've read things that the unroot via kingo doesnt actually remove the binaries, it only unsinstalls superuser. There still might be some traces of it on there, and the update will see this and youll get this message after boot, post update: (a verizon induced soft brick for having a modified system before update)
http://www.s3forums.com/forum/attac...d-help-bad-uploadfromtaptalk1349867775446.jpg
Kingo even told me via their facebook when I asked about it, "There is a big chance that you cannot update your device via OTA. Rooting means you tampered your device. Even your KNOX stays un-triggered, you device status will turn from "official" to "custom". If you wanna back to the "official", you should use kies/Odin to flash back the stock ROM," which is not what I want, seeing as how the firmware from sammobile and others like it arent 100% genuine from Sammy. When you unroot, it will still say modified system, even if knox isnt tripped. The updates check this. You can use wanam to "fake system status" but if you unroot first, you lose wanam functionality and if you update when you're still rooted theres no way itll take.
Just trying to hash it out as it'd be the perfect way to restore to official stock, if need be. Not having the ability makes it pretty scary to do on a phone I paid $750 for. So we're between a rock and a kitkat. I really dont want that ****ty update either. But not having a sure fire way back, it sucks.
Does anybody know about using a samsung store to update from 4.3 to 4.4.2 after unrooting? I'm assuming they use Odin to flash and actually have the official firmwares. I'd feel better about going about it that way because so far I see a lot of warnings about OTA's (even after "unrooting"). Curious if that way would work without soft bricking your phone with the verizon warning.

No problem. I don't worry so much about selling it, I can sell it on Swappa as they dont care about root. But for warranty purposes, it sucks. If something happens and we have to send it back and they find that it's been rooted or modified, they will not service it. It'd just be nice to have this card to play in order to get it back to a "trustworthy" genuine firmware. I'll insure mine though so yeah, spare wifi tablet I suppose. Just sucks the replacement will more than likely be refurbished.
Yeah, it's a great phone though. Are you gonna take any updates for it before rooting (not ****kat, obviously), or gonna root it out of the box (MJ9 software, I believe)? Just curious. I just don't trust Samsung's updates any more.
I never planned to root. I'm in mje latest update. I don't trust Kingo nor Vroot. That is why I never rooted. Kitkat sounds so horrible I feel compelled to root but I still don't trust available exploits. Like you said, a rock and a hard place... hahahahah!!! Stevens will be a great coach in a few years. Doc is a very very bad man. Hopefully we land Wiggins (or Parker). I'm on the fence about rooting too but from what I can tell Kingo is legit and worked for many people. the questiom is why dont they monitize it? thats scary to me.
So do you just deal with the software update popup by continually pressing home or back? if you defer it, after 4 times it installs on its own. same thing with rejecting it. I cant believe they don't give us control over our phones updstes (without rooting)! Hopefuly Verizon wont get it for a while.
There's a confirmed battery bug for kitkat ( on the nexus 5 atleast), the sd issue, a litany of instability, potentially, and the biggest deal with it: it breaks free wifi tethering and supposedly there will never be a way for developers to get arpund it. Yeah: I realllllyyy don't want that "update". If it aint broke...you know.
I don't know what I'll do yet. Sd card handling is an integral part of Kitkat and vzw won't improve it. Once the first announcement of imminent update occurs I will have to decide what to do.
I'm rooting for Celtics losses and I wish Ainje traded Rondo. I think we need a new team. I don't think Rondo will be a great influence on a young team.

HAhahahaha, I'm wiith you on all pages man. I would've stayed with my II but 4.3 is horrible on it and I'm really interested in the new Gear 2 watch which requires 4.3. Ironically 4.1.2 works like a BEAST on it but it wont support the gear 2. Samsung is fully turning into apple. If you do decide to root or find another way around the software updates, please let me know. I'll do the same for you. Kingo is one of the only ones that doesnt trip Knox but it's all but worthless if we cant get the system status back to "official" or get the kitkat update to install. Such a headache. Be careful with that software update popup, it's super consistent. Such a crazy way to have to use a flagship device. Most every time you press home, it pops back up. I found out that you can disable google services framework and that will prevent the update, but you also loose gmail, google play, you tube, maps and any other google app. Unbelievable.
There needs to be more NBA talk on XDA, lol. Danny has long since worn out his welcome. Still cant believe how he treated Pierce. I agree with the Rondo sentiment, wholeheartedly. His stock is falling as his athleticism fades as well. We need to blow up the team basically. I hope we resign AB, but I wont be shocked if he walks. We'll never get rid of Wallace's contract. Sully can be really good if he keeps healthy and developing. I used to love Green but now...I think we should deal him NOW. He clearly cant handle having the reigns and he takes way too many threes. Ironically enough Gerald Green is killing it for Phoenix right now?! Hoping for those ping pong balls too man. Hopefully we dont get screwed in the draft.
I'll keep you posted if I find anything.

So you're not hesitant to update to kitkat on your note? If not, can I ask what features of enhancements in it make you wish to update to it? it is confirmed that sd write access for 3rd party apps and free wifi tethering apps have disabled, for some thats a big deal. If it's anything like other updates it has the potential to cripple the phones battery life and performance. 4.3 ruined my note 2 and the replacement 2 as well, losing around 2 hours of battery life on each. I'm hesitant to trust them again. With every update it seems things get worse, not better. and I cant see any huge features that would make me wanna jump from 4.3.

I am wondering if my S7 can be rooted?

I have a Galaxy S7 (non edge) on AT&T. I enabled developer options. I notice in developer options, I have an option for OEM unlock. When I goggle what that option is for, it is to allow to unlock the bootloader. I found a command "fastboot oem unlock" I am trying to unlock the bootloader. But when running the command, I just get <waiting for device.> I am not 100% sure I am in the right mode to accept the command. If I type fastboot devices, I get nothing. I just found the command to do "adb reboot bootloader." It just reboots to the downloading screen. But typing fastboot devices still shows nothing. Any clue what I'm doing wrong here?
AT&T has a locked Bootloader and no root method as of now. It may never. Read around some and you can get more information about it.
I've read many articles say it has a locked bootloader and may never be unlocked. But, then I found this option for oem unlock and Googled it and figure if the option is there, there must be a way to unlock it
None of the carrier variants of the s7 and s7 edge will ever be rooted IMO. I've had the note edge, s6 edge+, and now S7 edge all on At&t none of them ever seen permanent root for as far as I know. I believe my last AT&T phone to get root was my G3
I am figuring out ways around the features I would like root for. It would be nice to have root, but I'll admit with root I tinker with my phone more and it would probably be better if I'm forced to not have it.
What is the oem unlock option for if it's not to unlock the bootloader?

Is it possible to give a temporary root so that phone stays rooted until rebooted? I wouldn't mind rooting it after each reboot.

I've never had an android that I didn't root since the HTC Eris back in the day. But frankly, I'm enjoying this S7 without root, I can theme, I can use Package Disabler Pro, All in one gestures, etc, etc,. So , I'm quite happy without root this time.
Probably won't get one if you have an AT&T model. Starting with my G4 and G5 however I've found that the custom ROM's aren't nearly as necessary for an excellent overall experience. I'm assuming when we get our S7E it will be about the same. Disable the bloat, add a preferred launcher and a patched google dailer and really they perform quite well. The only thing that's a big bummer is not being able to remove the bloatware. I just don't understand duplicate applications especially when those said applications are almost always inferior.
I'm not interested in custom ROMs. I tried a few Cynogenmod ROMs on my last phone and all of them were buggy. I am perfectly happy with the stock ROM on the S7. I am fully aware I can change launchers to many different ones without any root. There are a few root apps I wouldn't mind having. One, I don't pay for a lot of data. So, I had a toggle switch right on my home screen where I could enable/disable mobile data without going into menus to dig down to it. Without root, there is no way to do that. Second, I liked using Juice Defender to make my battery last much longer. There is the powersaving feature built into the stock rom, but I don't think it's as good as Juice Defender.
I guess the most major reason I rooted my last phone was because it only had 4 GB of internal memory so I used Link 2 SD to link all of my apps as well as a lot of system apps to the SD card which made the 4 GB almost doable. But with this phone having 30 GB internal, I am not having that problem and don't have a need to move stuff to SD card. Although if I end up adding one (because there is the hidden SD card slot), I might want root in the future to allow me to link to SD rather than moving so things work a little more smoothly.

None of the carrier variants of the s7 and s7 edge will ever be rooted IMO. I've had the note edge, s6 edge+, and now S7 edge all on At&t none of them ever seen permanent root for as far as I know. I believe my last AT&T phone to get root was my G3

Wrong. I believe they eventually got root (but not unlocked bootloaders) for the GS5, GS6. The GS4 I *personally* know had root because I had root on that phone even with the update which fully locked down the bootloader. They even had safestrap for custom roms for that. Check the forums for previous AT&T samsung galaxys.
I feel bad for the T-Mobile people but we also have them on our side for this one, since EVERY US GS7 variant is locked down pretty tight. I think we can eventually at least get root. Itll be a struggle. Keep checkin the forums.

Until then, you can use Helium for backing up apps & data (not everything though, and need a computer to enable it). One annoying app that I especially liked to backup was the Authenticator app. Luckily there is a workaround to enable authenticator on more than one device... (involves finding your secret key, and/or saving a screenshot of the barcodes for the setup).
Tether works fine without root (used to need root to enable this one)
The big one I miss is the adblocker thing and TiBu being able to remove bloatware, freeze apps, and backup and restore absolutely anything.
Does anyone know the status of someone finding a root method? is there some guy out there that knows how to do it on some really convoluted way or is that guy keep banging his head against the wall because every thing he tries is a dead end?

I had a note 3. There was a root, for a time. Although, no bootloader unlock. One was bootstrapping method that, if I recall correctly, required one to have the original system intact while allowing the user to select the rooted image on boot. The other was to use a .exe from a company in China. The application also sent your IMEI to said company. Both options, not so good.

I had root on my AT&T GS5. Was the bull**** bootstrap root without being able to flash kernels. But it still let me use many features I wanted
Just had an epiphany, and I'm sure I'm not the only person who's had it. After walking through Costco tonight and intending to walk out with a new S7 to replace my S4, I came out empty handed but with a different outlook. According to the cell phone rep, the major carriers no longer offer subsidized pricing for phones, which means you are paying full price for the phone over the life of the contract term. So you're paying almost $700 for an AT&T model of the S7, why not then just pay full price for the unlocked international version of the phone? The main reason to avoid unlocked phones in the past was because of the price difference, however the price difference is now gone.
Makes sense to me now that I like most people want a phone that can be rooted and free of bloat, have a new choice since the price is the same in the end.

The difference is that you can pay a small monthly payment with no interest through your carrier and you have to pay full price up front with the international version. That makes a massive difference for most people.

be honest I had an s4 before this and rooted it easily. I just assumed that all galaxys were easily rooted. didn't think twice. was surprised to find the s7 locked. be honest, the phone does work about perfect without root. just a few things I miss... I miss having apps auto move to the SD card. I like linking them instead of moving them. I don't "debloat" it. every time I've tried that, I end up getting weird dependency errors and crashes. learned my lesson. would like Aesop to just have a fully "debloated" phone. but not on the top of my list. one annoyance is I try to save data so I like to easily flip mobile data on and off from the home screen. no way to do that without root. it's just a shortcut to the toggle rather than toggling it directly. none of it is super pressing, but things I would just like.

The million dollar question. I hope it happens but this is the first phone stock I've had that doesn't annoy me. I actually barely notice at all but I love to flash so maybe one day
My phone runs great no issues so it's not a big thing to have it rooted in that aspect, however. I like to keep NANDROID backups in case something happens, and the ability to backup applications the way I want is very important to me. Just using apps to backup everything is one thing, but if something occurs on a system level, you are generally screwed unless you have ROOT to be able to tinker and fix it yourself. I was able to fix countless phones on my own when the stores would want to wipe to factory reset or give me a refurbished. Screw that mess, give me freedom. Besides, it's illegal for them to deny you insurance claims based on ROOT. They legally have to prove that you damaged the phone by modifying the software. Battled and won twice after threats of a lawsuit. I have that part of the consumer rights saved in multiple places, just need to remember where so I can post it.
It all depends on whether or not the bootloader is locked, dm-verity, restrictions, etc. I hope it's not something like the Galaxy S7 with its Qualcomm Secure Boot.
The bootloader isn't even accessible from any user accessable means from what I've encountered, I can't seem to get in, I have "Enable OEM unlock" in settings, but it just seems that fastboot has been entirely stripped from this device... Very weird.

Why dont you look for a bootloader exploit or donate your phone to someone who can do it?

Because I like to go outside every now and then and I need a working phone. Don't care to go back to old Nexus.

You can still anti bloat through android.. by disabling apps manually. But yeah I feel your pain.. I hate ads, I miss Xposed, I miss TWRP.. My note 5 i still keep around for that reason...
Truth is the LG G6 is a spectacular phone.. But the rooting community is getting smaller and smaller as android allows you to be more customizable and the average device life for people has gone from 2-3 years.. to every year now with leases and trade ins at carriers, and flagship phones coming out every 8-14 months.
WIth the G4 randomly dying, and the G5 having battery issues.. It took LG a while to get it right, and I love this phone more than the s8 and s8+ but LG jumped on the "apple/samsung" bandwagon by locking bootloaders... There are alot more people with Samsungs than LGs right now.. The reason behind all the companies going this route is because of Android Pay and proprietary security by phone manufacturers to push more sales through corporate and enterprise security..
At least LG is over time unlocking some variants ( albeit international) of the G6 its hopeful...
We used to have this luxury with HTC but they are still trying to stay afloat.
Those are just my observations... from working for an indirect dealer and rooting tons of phones for 9+ Years.
We just have to pray for an exploit- somewhere.. someone out there has turned it into an obsession... Lets just hope they emerge ....

Ditto on all that. For ads, I've used the all in one opt out which has eliminated lots of ads. Bloat is irritating, having to reset Google Voice after every update. Xposed was awesome. And I want all the Sprint badging and boot animation gone. Even temp root would make me happy.
Just everybody remember. Do not update. Usually root is achieved on lowest firmwares only in the last few history of lg series
Someone just messaged me this: Maybe some jtag process could work, or test point at qcom mode, dumping boot.img and rooting with magisk

How to Root my S8 to remove that damn Facebook App

So I just discovered I can't uninstall the Facebook app which thoroughly pissed me off. If it's not system critical then I think I aught to be able to uninstall it. Especially with all the news about Facebook scraping phone messages and what not without permission.
So mostly I'm pretty happy with the phone. Still annoyed Google includes pointless uninstallable apps I'm never going to use. For the most part I just disable those and move on. With Facebook, I want it gone.
I'm happy to unroot my device when done or leave it rooted. I've never actually rooted a phone before and the closest I can say I've come is I've jailbroken an old ipod touch before.
So if someone could point me in the right direction to help me remove this blasted Facebook app then I'd be mighty happy about that.
Thanks
Firedingo
You should just be able to disable it without the need for root via the apps menu. If that fails, there's this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler or another app callled Package Disabler Pro which should do the job.
I've also read about an app called Adhell which will work too.

Post above me is right, just for disabling/uninstalling Facebook, it might be overkill to root.
You have to know: There are different variants of the galaxy s8, based on the geographic location of where you bought it.
The international/european version is "easy" to root, while it's not possible to root an american Galaxy s8. There also is the fact that you void your warranty rooting, if you're outside of the EU ( see this)
So rethink your decission and if you still want to root, we can than show you a guide on how to

I have an international version, Australia to be exact. Yeah I knew that rooting voided the warranty. That said, the Australian Consumer Law is NOT voided despite me rooting the device so I may or may not have protection on that front depending on the issue.
I'd still like to know how to root my device. But thank you for raising those relevant points.

In order to root you flash a custom Recovery (TWRP in our case) via Odin on PC (Samsungs flash tool). You than boot up into that recovery and flash either Magisk or SuperSu.
Here is the thread: [RECOVERY][OFFICIAL] TWRP for Galaxy S8 and S8+ (Exynos)+
See post #3 for instructions.

Pretty sure google's AOSP doesn't have this. This is a Samsung decision, not Google.
