Wifi problem with new Essential phone... - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I couldn't resist Sprint's $6 per month deal for the Essential phone (you pay $29 per month and get a $23 per month credit when leasing for 18 months). I picked up my Essential phone yesterday and am having Wifi problems. We have a new TP-Link Archer-C9 - AC1900 Long Range Wi-Fi Router installed. All the other devices in the house connect through the TP-Link router fine and have internet access (Android Tablet, Older Android Phone, iPad). But when I connect to the TP-Link router from the Essential phone I get a "connected - no internet" message. When I try to open up a web page in Chrome, it says "Wan Port Disconnected" -- I know that the WAN port is the "internet" ....
I'm hoping that this is just a setting that I need to change on the Essential phone...
Any ideas why other device can connect to the internet through the TP-Link router but the Essential phone cannot? Is there any known incompatibility with Essential phone and TP-Link routers? I need to get this sorted out if possible soon because I only have a few weeks to return the TP-Link router.
Note - This happens on both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz hotspots...
Thanks in advance!
Doug

What OS version is your phone running? There is known issues with bluetooth and wifi with Essential phone earlier versions. I'm not trying to encourage you to sideload the latest Oreo beta 2 but I've never had any problems with my wifi connection.

I am running Android 7.1.1 build NMJ32F
When I setup the phone yesterday I only got two notifications to update. I had expected many more than that based on how many updates I have heard were released.
How do I find out if I am running the latest Android 7.1.1 build? I don't see any option in setting to check for updates... Sure I"m missing that...
Thanks again!

F is the latest Sprint update, you have to manually update to NMJ51B which is the real latest.

You can sideload the latest build or Oreo beta 2 here. It's very smooth, fast and stable.

One more trick to get updated to the latest version NMJ51B is turn off your phone > pull out Sprint sim card > turn it back on with wifi connection only for 5 minutes or so then it will prompt you the update.
Did you try to get wifi connection elsewhere like Starbucks, etc...???

Well, it tells everything that your phone wifi is fine and working. You need to check your router at home to see if there is a limited wifi connection by factory default settings. I have Verizon fios router and its default settings is for only 10 devices at the same time so I had to adjust it to make it work for more than 10. Hope this helps!

thanks.
Wifi stopped working for me about a week ago on the last build I was using. It had worked fine for a few weeks and then nothing. I could connect with Windows, just not Android. There was nothing on my router to show that the mac address was blocked - there was no discernible reason that I could find.
I ended up changing builds yesterday and my wifi is back again. Unfortunatly, a change of build is the only thing I can recommend.
Unless, of course, there's 2 people trying to use the same wifi router, both running the same Android build?

[Q] No wifi

I just unboxed my elocity A7 yesterday but till now I can't connect to any wifi network. It keeps "scanning" but doesn't find any network even when I place it besides the router
I wrote to customer support and they gave me some suggestions but nothing changes. I updated the firmware and it keeps the same.
It's a great device but not without wifi.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
JC
Ouch. I have this problem with both my Droid 2 and initially did on the A7 as well.
I enabled and disabled WiFi.
Restarted the device
Tried to enabled WiFi again and got the same issue
Disabled and re-enabled and it connected right up. No problems since.
Android devices work great with routers, except some extra cases. Try to reconfigure router.
At first make open network (no hidden) without any security. Check WIFI.
If success, try to extend security.
If no success -> Probably should do factory reset / wipe. It's strange...
I have D-Link DIR-655 and NEVER got any problems (HTC Magic, HTC Tattoo, MyTouch 3G, MyTouch 4G, Acer Liquid, eLocity A7 - all connected fast and simple)
I used two variants: open network with MAC-address filtering or closed network with WPA2 security
The EA7 is a B&G only WiFi device...so make sure your router isnt set to N only (or A only).

First I tried with WPA2 active, since I didn't succeeded I restored the router to its factory settings. Nothing
Is there a way to find out if the wireless adapter is working correctly in the elocity?
Possible contact elocity and request a replacement be sent with postage to return yours.

I'm aware of that. The thing is that I don't live in the USA, I bought the elocity in Amazon and unboxed it more than 30 days after the purchase so I'm trying to figure out a way to fix it by myself before having to sent it back to the States and try to get a replacement

Man, you can try go to the commercial centers or McDonalds where WiFi is translating 100% and usually not hidden nets are there.
If your other devices or friends devices are finding some nets and your tablet is not - so your device is broken.
Probably home network is confusing cause they might be hidden or with strong security or adhoc type, so you could think that wifi is broken.

Ok, I'm gonna try that before going any further. Everything else works perfectly including the bluetooth, so the next step I'm thinking of is finding a way to tethering ...
Just came across this thread... I too just got this tablet and had issues with the wifi. It recognized my home wifi network, tried to connected then siad disconnected, did it agian and agian. Thought if I rooted it, it would work. Still didn't work. Finally just to see, i went outside to my local cafe where they have free wifi and Pow! it worked! Narrowed the issue down to the router the cable company set up for me. So i ended up resetting the router, tired my tablet 1st unsecured at home, then made a secure network, connected my tablet again w/ newly created key. Works.. I'm no techie so i'm sure theres probably a more official/technical exlination on how i got it to work
Replaced by elocity
I finally sent the broken tablet to California and they sent me a working one. Good custumer service by Elocity

[Q] Wifi and me - not happening! Piece of CRAP google!

I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
My N4 won't connect to wifi. Well it connects but Won't keep a connection to complete a playstore app install nor update the system itself?
This is what I posted on "Issue 40065: Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 Wifi Drops connection Android 4.2"
New device just received. Will connect to wifi but unable to install any apps thru play store.... Just shows data transferring but none actually happens. I'm unable to install none of the gapps updates. Left it alone for 2 days did not help. removing password from router and making it an open router did not help. Now trying to decide I should return the device as it is only usable as a phone not a multimedia device which this N4 should be?
There are a lot of people having the same kind of issue on this phone. A little search brings up lots and lots of complaints.
Still unable to connect to my router encore model 2AN3.
Tried to connect to open wifi router at McD and [email protected]#$ - still no go. It will connect think about it and stops. The icon at the top turns green and gray and keeps doing it.
How ever I was able to connect to the open wifi router on another Nexus S (my older phone) and was able to download updates and install said applications from play store.
This tells me that hardware is good. Software coded so badly that it is unable to keep a connection to routers.
So if you need to use this phone on a wifi router - wait until google fix this or get another phone.
As for me - it is a shame I will have to return this phone to google as it is useless media device. Just a phone which I can get a cheap phone for 10 bucks not $400 piece of [email protected]#$%T.
Sorry for the RANT.

Also flashed rom CM10.1 stable and xylon 17 stable. Still same problem repeated. both ROMS can connect to my hotspot on my NS but unable to neither my home router nor public wifi.
A few things I have tried.
1. avoid poor wifi disabled.
2. switch chennels to 6 or 8 - tried all.
3. Resetting routers
4. Assigning static IP address
5. Cleared cache from recovery
6. changed the Wi-Fi band from 'Auto' to 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz
7. Flashed new kernel Running franko.
8. Flashed 2 other ROMS/cm10.1 and xylon17 both stable versions.
My home router have not trouble connecting to all other devices at home (NS, HP touchpad, 3 desktop and 3 other laptops, Tried with N4 being the only device that was turned on. : still no go!! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!

I just called. This guy treated me like I'm noob. But I digress.. He asked me to turn off GPS and try again saying that GPS and wifi together can not be on at the same time. That still did not work. So there is a request for replacement. Not really sure when I will get it. But keep my finger crossed - that I get a working wifi and gps at the same time ??
Don't really want to return it though since I like the phone form factor and such!
What a shame.

You shouldn't be flashing ROMs to try and fix something as basic as this. You're only adding more variables to the problem. My WiFi has been rock solid, and so apparently is that of most other posters. This would tend to indicate that there is a specific problem with your phone.
Unless there is something seriously wrong with your router it's RMA time I reckon.

Just to re-iterate .....
Wifi works if I connect to my other nexus S's hot spot.
Wifi will not stay connected to allow me to go to play store on any wifi router (home Encore ENHWI-2AN3 firmware version 1.1.3 - Mcdee's open wifi and [email protected]#'s open wifi router.) It will connect - get a blue wifi icon with a few arrows ..... but will go to gray and back to blue and so on ....
Waiting for google to make up its mind about shipping me a replacement.

This may be a long shot but if you’re on Project Fi you may want to check the Google wi-fi Assistant. Good Luck!
Reboot your router and it should be all set. Trust me - it just needs to flush.
If reboot doesn't work try changing the WiFi channel if not auto. Good luck!

I've had this problem on several custom roms with my N6p, and the only way I could fix it was to go back to the stock rom. You could try flashing the stock boot.img and vendor.img, then wiping system, and flashing your rom and gapps again. I think it has something to do with root, but that is my opinion from just from trial and error flashing. I am on Project Fi.
Have you tried connecting to other WiFi networks? Same behavior?

Are you using a mac address on it? And have you tried flushing and renewing the the address on the router? No other conflicts?
Hi, I had a similar problem on my N6p. I have 2 routers in the house, both use the same SSID. Thanks to WiFI Analyser I have fixed it. My N5, and other devices could 'see' and use both routers but the N6p could not 'see' the downstairs router which was set to channel 13 (2.4GHz). When I changed it to channel 8, the N6p could 'see' it. Bit weird that the N6p has this restriction.

It s Bug!
When you are near to WiFi It switch to 5GHz that has problem with Android 5.+
there is no solution other than manually set to 2.4GHz
to make sure completely about it works go to Router Setting and set different SSID and pass for 5GHz
Then on ur phone connect it to 2.4GHz SSID

I have the same issue on my stock/ not rooted nexus 7 and moto nexus 6.. So I'm pretty sure it isn't rom related.
@ericksco
I don't have another WiFi network to connect to until tomorrow.. I'll try it then.

As I know that Nexus will detect network connection via Google's service(such as ping GMS server).
Was them actually not able to open a webpage/Facebook page, or just showing no internet access?

Has anyone got WiFi Tether Router working on their Essential?

I can't get WiFi Tether Router working on my Essential PH-1. The SSID won't show up on my other devices. I have contacted the dev but he has yet to reply. I'm running Android 9 and have Magisk installed. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Whatever you are trying to do... It's supported by stock already...
Both WiFi hotspot and WiFi repeater work on stock...
I understand that but my carrier which is AT&T doesn't let me use the build in hotspot/tethering features so I'm relying on this app but as I said earlier I can't get the SSID to show on my other devices. Wifi Tether Router was made by Fabio Grasso.

Try using this: https://lanrat.com/tethr/ I used this on my PH-1 (using Sprint) before they gave me free tethering as part of my phone plan.
No I don't think that will work,I can turn on the hotspot build in the phone but that's not allowed by my carrier so they'll cut me off. The app by Fabio allows me to use my phone data rather than using hotspot data. So my carrier won't be able to detect that I'm using my phone as a hotspot. Thank you tho
I use WiFi Tether Router on my old Galaxy Light for hotspot duty. After work I'll see if I can install it on the PH-1 and check it out. The Nougat ROM I'm on now doesn't have Play Store so as long as it doesn't do license checking I should be okay.
Essential PH-1, /e/ 0.5-n ROM, microG (NoGapps), XDA Legacy

Alright I appreciate I've used this app on my old S6 so I know it works it's just I can't get it to broadcast the SSID to other devices. Normally I'd go to the dev but he hasn't replied at all.
