Display dead after changing cover

Hi,
Tried to change cover according to the pdf found in a thread earlier.
Got everything in place BUT the display is nothing but black...
I reallt dont think that the display is broken. My guess is that I did something wrong trying to put back the flexible wiring to the connector.
Can anyone help me fix this problem?
Dunno what specifically to be extra careful of when doing this.
Any other idea what might be wrong?!?
Pls, any thoughts are worthful to me! Just want my beautiful "new" black magician to work again...

Same crap happened to me last night!
I painted the cover and expected to be done in about 30 minutes.
At the end 4,5 hours of taking apart en putting it back,
just because the screen stayed blank (sometimes white, mostly black)
Anyway, I figured the problem.. so here it goes..
When you look at the yellow flatcable you notice 2 ears sticking out...
This "ears" suppose to go as far as possible
to line up with the outside line of the green board.

Yellow = flatcable
Green = board
Black = Slot (where you stick the flat cable in)
Red = imaginary line to line up the back of the "ear" with the board
So when you cannot push enough with your fingers,
take a small screwdriver and push the ears further in the slot.
Just be careful not to break the ear...
I suppose if it break it might take some connections in
the flatcable with it, thus a new screen is needed.

I checked and I rearranged the flatcable into different locations but no change in a better direction. Sometimes I get colourful stripes over the screen but that is how close I get to it...
Still need some help!
Any more tips or do I have to throw away my beloved magician...?

Yeb, know what you mean... Have experice the same.. your screen is definitly oke, not cracked, broke or whatever..
The flat cable is not in far enough or the connection is broken on one side, which means when you put it back together the flatcable slides out a bit. Mine is broken on one side and though I don't think that a broken small clip would mean replacing the whole thing, I did tape it tight to be sure it stays there.
So mate, try again... I dunno how I have to make clear what "push harder" means.. but it's harder than you would expect with this delicate stuff.
If I have to compare the pressure applied to get the flatcable in slot I would say it comes close to pushing an IDE connection into it's slot... it's really hard...
Maybe another guide-line... When you slide in the black middle piece it should NOT touch the flat cable. (well, almost not)
Anyway, let me know in which dumpster you gonna throw it, So i pick it up and sell it back to you

I pushed the cable in so far so that the "ears" you mentioned earlier touches the white plastic where the cable goes under. Meaning you can´t physically push it any more... Do you understand what I mean? In this position the display is black. It´s when I pull out the cable one or two mm that I get the white screen with stripe on it.
Maybe it´s the broken connection you´re talking about. Have to check if I can see anything of that. Not quite sure what you mean though.
Do you mean that where the cable is connected on the other side, that is where it could have come off?
How can I check if this is the case?
Guess I must have spent 15 hours minimum at this crap now...!!!

Weird problem with buttons on screen part.

Hi!
I got a weird problem. Seems like the buttons on the screen part have some problems.
When I press some of the button on Universal screen don't work but instead
the up button keep pressed, not phisically but logical.
It's annoyning because I must reset it to back a normal function.
I opened the screen part I checked and made some pression all over the conecctions, without the
back case worked ok, but when I put the back case on the screen the problem returns.
Please any ideas, solutions.

I have the same problem. If I rotate the screen around a bit the buttons work fine, but if the screen is on straight the buttons sometimes just keep on going.
I thought it's a faulty cable between the main body and the screen part, but seeing how it works for you maybe it's a connector problem? I bought a new cable and will see if it helps. Mine has a screen color issue too (screens is blueish).

I tried to identify what the problem is, but I didn't find anything. I tried pressing the conecctor to the buttons parts , I cleaned the pins, pulled the flex cable, and nothing ....sometimes it worked and sometimes not. Whatever I will to exchange or replace with another.

Sounds like a cable break too. I think with mine it went wrong when I turned the screen too far. Somehow the rotation was not blocked anymore and I think it got twisted too tight and the wires in the flex cable were damaged. Wiggling the screen would help sometimes, but the problem deteriorated over time.
I finally received the new flex cable I ordered. I paid 44 GBP (66 EUR) for the flex cable to a company in Hong Kong. I think they are raising the prices of these cables, because I thought I saw them for 30 to 40 euro earlier.
Installing this new flex cable indeed got rid of the problem with the buttons and the problem with the blue color of the screen. Both problems rendered the PDA practically useless and now it's working again.
Unfortunately I somehow managed to break the camera. It says "failed to initialize" when I start the camera software I looked it up and people claim it could be caused by dropping the PDA, but I guess completely taking it apart and putting it back together might cause the problem too
To replace the cable I needed to take the PDA completely apart:

:edit: Wow I checked ebay and the only flex cable seller i could find asks $119 for it. They are really becoming more and more expensive or perhaps I just didn't search properly.

HD2 Opening Instructions for dummies (only till Main PCB)

Disclaimer: Opening your HD2 will result in your warranty becoming VOID. Any damage to your HD2 as a result of following this walk-through is not my fault and was because you have large clumsy hands. If you want your phone repaired professionally without your warranty voided, send it to your supplier.
Tools you will need:
- HD2
- T5 screwdriver
- Tool kit for Phone/iPod/PSP (available on ebay, pictured below)

1) To start off with, turn off the phone then remove the battery cover along with the battery, SIM card and SD card.
2) WARNING! This next step will VOID your warranty. Remove the 4 screws using the T5 screwdriver.
3) Now comes the fun bit, stick the suction cup near the top of the screen and insert the blue tool (for lack of a real name) between the screen and casing.
4) Once the blue tool is in you should be able to pop the screen out one side at a time as there are two sets of "hooks" that hold it in place. You can pull on the suction cup to make this process easier.
5) Now that the top bit is out you need to run the blue tool down the sides of the screen to loosen it up. Then pull on the suction cup and it should separate quite easily.
6) To remove the main PCB you need to remove 3 screws using the T5 screwdriver. There are 6 connectors on the Main PCB, 3 on the top (yellow) and three on the bottom (red). You will also need to remove the copper shielding, you can do so by carefully pulling it off taking care not to deform it as you will need it back it the same place when you reassemble it.
Reassembling it is just a reverse process of the disassembly with the exception of the volume buttons, I've found them quite annoying to hold in place as you push the screen back and had to try multiple times to get it right.
That's all I got up to so far, if I get a weekend off I'll try to go further and do a complete guide, along with replacing the screen. If anyone has any suggestions/improvements please let me know as this was a little rushed.
Notes: You can use a plastic screwdriver if you don't want to buy the blue thingy but it may damage your phone. On my first opening attempt I used a screwdriver and there is slight damage to the top where I inserted it. Second attempt with the blue thingy and there is no additional damage and the screen was much easier to remove.

Many thanks, but can you do a youtube video of this? I tried to do this using exactly the same tools, but i didn't manage to remove the glass unit from the backcover although i used the blue plastic tool in the same way.

Thanks. My HD2 has a crack running from the battery holding place and all the way where the screen starts. I was gutted but looks easier than thought now , Thanks to these instructions by you if I buy a new back casing cover.

My HD2 only has two screws. Is the uk casing different to the US one ?.

I have tried to open my HD2, with a screw driver instead of a plastic tool.. it almost popped open, but i could also hear a sound like glue coming loose ..and after i just thought to put the HD2 back together and turn it back on, my touch screen stopped working.. What can i do?

You should seriously think to get your touchscreen replaced, most likely you cracked it in your attempt to open your phone.

[Tutorial] Fix looseness from microUSB port

A while ago I noticed that my micro USB cable does not fit well on my U8800 and when I picked up my phone the cable the cable always fall out without doing any force. After reading various sites, to decide what would be the best way and after I did it I'm now leaving here how to solve this problem. In my case it was dust and lint that accumulated because of taking the phone in pocket, etc..
Tutorial
You should use a toothpick, previously buffed with a fine sandpaper like the image below. You can use other objects, but with the toothpick you can do it without turning off the phone because it isn't a electrical conductor and you can also sharpen the tip very easily.

You should clean the area paint in blue below:
After this you should give special attention to areas in microusb port marked in red below which is where bolts fits and attach the cable to the port. You should try to clean as much as possible the dust that has entrenched there.
In my case after 5 minutes of hard work this was the result:

I used the lamp on my bedside table for a better look inside the door. Those black things are dust that came out of there now do not have any slack in the port works at 100% and I can move the phone without any problem.

Could be, the other reason might be, that your connector is broken at some point.
Try the method above, if it doesn't work i'd contact the support if you still have warranty.

I would suspect that the solder connection from the socket to the PCB is broken.

One thing that helps to is to have a magnifying lens or pocket loop to closely inspect the connector.
It comes in handy if you are "middle age" and the bifocals don't give you a clear enough picture :cyclops:
On my Galaxy note, last spring, I was noticing an unusual problem of it would either "self connect" with
nothing actually connected (it would make the connect-disconnect sound). Upon inspection of the port
on the device, I noticed what appeared to be a greenish-blue substance migrating from the right most
pins, to the middle pins in an arch pattern. After powering down the phone, pulling the battery, I took a
can of dust off, sprayed the connector, then using a lint free cloth, dabbed in alcohol, I wiped down the
entire inside area of the usb port. After cleaning, I hit it again with the canned air for good measure.
After 2-3 minutes, popped the battery back in, and fired it up. Haven't had any more problems since.

Took a stanley knife to a toothpick and rummaged around in the usb connector of my phone, it feels a little better, so thanks!

I use a sewing needle on my girlfriends phone when the port gets full of lint. I make sure to take the battery out, not sure if its necessary, but better safe than sorry.

If your cable (still) falls out, bite slightly on the plug.

Is there any definitive solution to the usb-c port problem?

Guys there is a piece or tutorial that definitively solves the problem of the usb-c port of this device, I like it very much and I didn't want to get rid of it !!

However, the peice that went into the phone has quite a bit of thickness and felt if the phone were to ever fall on the charging port it would break the port and generally, I did not like the aesthetics of it, it was too thick. Check this video out if you are interested in it, it's for a similar phone (Video MP4 file)
3rd thing I considered was to DIY a battery case that would connect to the port and a cover that would be thick enough to cover the port and the battery case. Would then have an alternative charging method, like wireless or USB-C. I gave up on this as my port is fine as of now, since I bought a pre-owned phone, it's been working fine.
Currently, I only use an Amazon basics certified USB-C cable to charge the phone, I do not use the company supplied cable at all.
If you want to change the charging port yourself you can search on youtube you will find a video with reasonable knowledge on how to open up your phone and change the port yourself, like this one

there's none, you can fix it, but eventually, it's gonna broken again. The actual problem is the housing, it's put much pressure on the port so it wears so easily, especially when you're using your phone when charging, which most people often do even just for checking the notification.

In my opinion,
Change the port with the OEM original and replace that goddam USB cable that came with the phone,
That cable is the culprit, I use OnePlus dash cable

I was very luck to find a repair service that fixed the internal piece of hardware (I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
It took the guy approx. 2 hours to complete the job.
Note that he didn't replace the hardware, but fixed the original faulty component somehow instead.
If you order the OEM component from AliExpress or somewhere else and ask a technician to replace, it would take approx. 30 min.
After the job was done, the back of the phone was glued and kept strapped to the case with ribbons for half an hour.
Also I've bought a new cable, a highly recommended OEM one from Amazon. That was when the first signs of the problem emerged.
Now the fast charge is working again.
In the last few weeks of despair, I was applying pressure to the connector when attached to the port, by rising it or pushing it to the side, which only made things worse, since the internal component was absorbing all that pressure.
Don't do that. If the problem comes, try to replace the internal component asap.
One last piece of advice, don't charge and use the phone. Keep it quiet on a flat surface, like a table or chair.

I read somewhere so not sure of truths but.... the story said the problem was the fit being to loose and causing wear... The solution that the guy came up with was to put a small strip of cello tape carefully around the end of the USB c connector making the fit tighter... Seems like it could be a solution... I personally just keep changing the faulty bit.... The phones in a case so no need to professionally restick the back... Changing the part takes about five minutes

I think there is no solution for this problem. I changed the usb-c board 5 times, the last one yesterday. I finally bought 5 more new, seemingly original boards from an Aliexpress seller, for about $ 16 in total. Here is the link to the article, for anyone interested:
