TyTN:Temporary Method to deal with LCD Alignment Problem

I don't know why this setting can solve this problem (May be).
Go to
start > Setting > Connection > USB to PC
Step:
1. Uncheck USB to PC
2. Start > Setting > System > Screeen > Calibration the Alignment of Screen
3. Soft Reset.
My friend also use CHT9000 (Taiwan Version) and told me this method. After the above mentioned adjustment, not alignment problem up to this moment.
I also use this method. 2 days gone, no alignment problem was found. I will keep to update this post in the future.

There is a thread or two about this on the general side or somewhere.
"Search" will work fine.

I tought it is working but not.
I have contacted with the local HTC/QTEK partner.
Waiting for the official solution.

I think that I may have a proper fix. my alignment seemed to be fixed by a rom upgrade but has been getting prgressively worse for a few days. Last night I tried something hardware based. I will test this for two days before I will say what it is but I have had no misalignment issue in the few hours since I did it.

Ok it hasn't shifted at all today!
I was going to open it up to have a look at the rubber gasket that was mentioned in another post but chickened out!
Optional but probably a good idea; turn off and remove the battery.
1) Slide keyboard out and turn face down.
2) There are 2 tiny screws on the back of the screen that need to be undone. They have thread lock on them so a small crack will be heard as it releases.
3) Once the screws are out a further small crack noise may be heard. That'll be the tension being taken off the screen!
4) Put the screws back in and tighten (or should that be TyTN?). Do not over tighten these as it is only plastic.
5) If necessary realign the screen (hopefully for the last time)
As kind of proof that this has worked, this post was made from my v1605 on hsdpa while I was talking on the phone using bluetooth and got very hot and didn't need any realigning!

I have the O2 Trion and my screen will be slight misaligned at the right side (cant use the vert scroll bar) . Is this exactly your problem ?
Does your problem happened again, if not could you post some pic/steps on how you did it ?

as long as there is no excessive used here, that is what you mean right?

That's what mine was doing when it got hot but it has been perfect all day!

You're correct. Before I did this one screw was clearly at an angle and afterwards it was straight.
If anyone else has success let me know and I'll try to get some photos and do a how-to on the wiki.

i tried this out for my friend and he claims that while it did fix the alignment problem on the right side, sometimes the screen becomes slightly misaligned. could be that i tightened a bit too hard so will look into this.

When I did it for my friend, he claims that the screen, while does not have as serious an alignment problem as before, still has it. Its not that bad.
He notices that the problem usually comes after making a call. No matter how long the call (whether for 1 min or 40 mins), the screen will be slightly mis-aligned and needs to be re-aligned. Things like pressing the 'ENTER' button on the phone pad does not work unless he presses a certain part of the button.
Any advice for him?

I undone the 2 screws but hear no click or crack and return it back not so tight... is that the correct way... I will monitor mine, since it only happening once a day..

Though I do not hv one but I can inform that it is the bad quality of work..this has been happening to all the recent G4 Wizards and Prophets with SZ series serial number.
I think thehardware design has gone wrong..
Pls check yr serial number..if they start from HT or SZ

i think all the HTC Hermes manufactured are of the HT version

Crazy Tytn screen and button problem, please help

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum but I've been reading for a while to educate myself.
I've got a Herm200 that I've been trying to troubleshoot but to no avail. I'm fairly certain that it has a hardware problem but I haven't been able to isolate anything.
Here's whats happening:
Occasionally the screen will come out of stand-by all white. This will also happen randomly if i touch the screen to perform a command. While the screen is operating, sometimes the buttons on the face will stop working, however the buttons across both sides will continue working just fine.
When the screen turns all white a soft, hard, or stand-by cycle will not always bring it back to life. The fact that the hard reset wont always fix the problem makes me think it's a hardware issue since the phone will boot-up with the the all-white screen.
This is incredibly frustrating especially since HTC wont accept any warranty claims in the USA on the Tytn.
At first I thought this might be a problem with the ribon connection between the screen and the base but i haven't been able to confirm or discount anything at this point. I have yet to find a way to consistently reproduce or rectify the problem so it's very hard to troubleshoot.
I pretty much have to take a second phone with me everywhere right now just incase i need to make a call. Please help! Has anyone ever encountered such a problem?

Hi. This sounds very similar to a problem that I experienced with a HERMES100. I bought the phone off someone on Ebay recently - someone had obviously scrambled the radio on it. I re-flashed it, and it sprang to life. However, after a couple of days, I experienced a problem where occasionally the LCD would stop refreshing, all the pixels faded away leaving only a white screen. Under these circumstances, some of the buttons on the phone stopped working. Turning phone on/off sometimes cured the problem, or it would require the occasional hard reset. This would happen once or twice a day and I suspect thats why someone tried to re-flash the phone.
In the end, out of curiosity I took the entire phone apart, put it all back together again and now there are no more problems!! Totally fixed!
My suspicion is that it was one of the ribbon cable push connectors on the mainboard - possibly not seated properly, or a bit of dirt contaminating the connection. Obviously when I took the phone apart I must have re-seated it.
If you are planning to take your phone apart, please exercise considerable care because some of the parts are very small and easily damaged. I would recommend buying a proper kit to take it apart. I bought mine for about £5 off ebay. Particularly useful are the plastic spoon "wedges" used to gently prise open the case after removing the screens. Don't use a screwdriver - you will scratch the case.

wow... that sounds like exactly what's going on here, I actually even tried to disassemble it lastnight but didnt have the right driver set. thank you for the advice!

I have had the exact same problem. Because I got the Tytn through work I made our IT department handle the issue and I am currently waiting for a replacement and to find out what happened.

I'm beginning to think it's a hardware problem as well but not entirely sure.
People in the above thread mentioned that using the scroll wheel a while then moving back to use the D pad fixed the problem (very briefly in my case.) Once I use the center D pad button again it locks the hardware buttons under the screen until I make my device sleep and resume.
Somtimes rather than making all the front hardware buttons unresponsive the issue is that once I use the Down Dpad button I can't use the up button. Pressing up will make it go down, as will pressing down (at least that's working ).
Regarding the white screen - this sometimes also occurs. I can force it to white screen by putting a little pressure on the silver panel surrounding the top, right and bottom of the screen (I have an imate jasjam). Randomly when there's no pressure on the rim and I wake it out of standby, it has a white screen that can only be fixed by turning the screen off and on again.
Finally, the LED indicator seems screwy. Sometimes it never flashes. Other times it flashes sporadically (uneven intervals - we're talking maybe a minute between one flash then seconds before another). When I charge it sometimes the LED doesn't come on but nevertheless it charges. Sometimes if the LED is on it never turns green to indicate a full charge. Yet other times it comes on orange, turns green, then never switches off!
Is it possible that
a) The hardware button problems.
b) The white screen problem.
c) The LED problem.
are all related to some kind of connection going loose? Why would the hardware button problem be temporarily fixable with use of the scroll wheel if this were the case?
The other thread has fallen silent. I'm hoping that some of the gurus in here can offer some input here, even if they don't know the answer but can formulate an opinion. I know very little about these devices.

I had a similar problem with my HERM100. I didn't mess around with it too much, I just had Cingular replace it out of warranty exchange (thank god those original ROMs are on the wiki ). I did notice however that after doing a master reset, the screen would function again although I haven't messed around with it too much. I got so frustrated with removing the battery for 5 minutes and STILL powering on with a white screen that I just threw it in my back seat until the new one arrived.

I don't have these screen issues. I only have hardware button problems. It's so damn frustrating! I already own a replacement.
I just received a call from my girlfriend. I wasn't able to answer the phone with the buttons, only with a screentap. I also wasn't able to close the call with the hardware button. Since the side buttons work, I went to settings -> phone, closed it, and there we go. The hardware buttons worked again.
Why the heck is this? I truly hope for some wizz out there with some advice, since HTC would only tell me to send it back after replacing it with a new TyTN with same issues.

This is my first post as I've so far managed to cure all my issues from just reading the forum. However, I am now having a similar problem with the white screen.
I have a cingular 8525. It fell and the following day the call and end buttons remained lit and wouldn't turn off and they also wouldn't work.
I soft reset, nothing, I then removed the battery and when I turned it back on, there was a white screen and the buttons below still don't work.
I have read the other posts on this issue, but I need help on exactly what kit to buy to reconnect the screen cable and instructions on how to do it as I've never taken apart a phone before, although I have dabbled with other electronic devices.
Your help would be much appreciated, as I am in Jamaica and there are no technicians here who I trust to help.

Both kits look ok. PDA one tells you a little more but the basics appear to be in both.
I'm curious though you soft reset and took the battery out, but have you done a HARD reset? I would always try this first before dismantling.

In my case, they also are always lit up when the screen is also active.
And no matter what ROM version, they occasionally stop responding. Side buttons keep working.

I couldn't do a hard reset because the buttons weren't working.
I have made some progress with the phone now. Found a tech guy who looked at it for me. The white screen is gone, but the buttons still stop working from time to time.
All the connections seem ok.
Is there anything else that could cause the buttons to malfunction?

Nothing obvious.
Have you got applications installed that you have loaded - could be one thats playing up.
Have you now been able to do a hard reset?
If taking device apart and reassembling improved things it does suggest hardware though and might be worth double checking all those multi-connector blocks for good connections - i.e. take them out and in a few times to ensure any oxidation on contacts is removed.

If it wouldn't be a software issue, why is it, in my case, instantly resolved when going to settings -> phone with the side buttons?

i had this problem i took it to a guy who fixed the problem he said it was a very small tear in the flex cable which causes this white screen every now ant then and the buton problem , sorry to say its the cable problem and u need a very capable person to fix it or replace it with a new one . its very common problem baised on the guy who fixed it .

Exactly what is happening to me, no white screen issues, just screen taps and answering calls, I also have another problem where the PDA will not allow me to open anything, be it the start menu or contacts, it will open and quickly close again. I have had mine swapped through Telstra in Sydney, it worked fine for a while and then the same crap again. These problems started before I even touched the OS, so it must be a build problem. Maybe we should write a joint letter to HTC letting them know that there is a serious problem with their machine.

I have had the same problem, got my Tytn through work so we sent it back to the company that supplied it to us. Got it back yesterday and they had replaced the "switchboard". Not sure what it is but there was the problem. Had white screen and buttons not working.

Today I noticed that my HD2 vibrates strangely, it sounds like a shaving machine when vibrating
I performed many soft resets, hard reset, then I flashed an offcial ROM, SPL, etc. but nothing works. I guess the problem is related with the vibration hardware.
I will be sending my phone to HTC service tomorrow, and let you know about the results.
Anybody faced the problem? Or any suggestion before sending the device to service?

I remember (2months ago) that my vibrate works strangely, i hard reset and it works again perfectly!

There was some issue posted a few times where the camera flash was pressed in, and was interfering with the vibration somehow.

I think I have the same problem, my camera flash seems to be pressed in (one side of it).
Is there an easy solution or should I hand it to the service?

Vibration seems to be a big problem. I had the same issue. only solution: warranty repair. my phone was replaced by 02.

Can't seem to find them... anyway, the flash housing is nearly directly over the vibration motor thing, and if the plastic flash cover gets loose it could very well push the flash housing down (it's not very secure, pretty soft metal actually) and block the motor.
Just check if the plastic flash cover is pushed in from the rest of the body.
E: If it is, then get it repaired by warranty, as it's not worth opening it up to fix yourself and voiding your warranty.

This is exactly what happened to my phone. The lower part of the plastic flash cover looks pushed in (I checked with another working HD2).
And yes, I handed the phone to the service today. I hope they do not break other things when trying to fix this issue

My Leo stopped vibrating. I saw your posts and checked the camera flash. It was indeed pushed in. My warranty was not valid, so I tried to fix it myself. It was actually very easy. I followed a video showing how to disassemble the Leo . As soon as the housing is removed, we have access to the flash plastic cover. I've just snapped it in very carefully et voilá: the phone is back to its own self!

I am glad you fixed your problem easily.
My phone is still not back from the service

I have my phone back...
Finally, I have my phone back. The service report tells me that they have changed a part responsible for vibration. I checked the vibration functionality and actually it is working fine now. One surprise however is that the flash cover still appears to be pushed in.

Same problem
My TMobileUS HD2 is having the exact same problem - no vibration at all, even after hard reset. I also see the camera light's assembly is no longer correctly positioned in the body as it should be. It seems that the lower end is pulling into the body of the phone.
I treat my phone very gently, so I'm sure this didn't happen from rough treatment. Given that it's happening on a number of contiinents, this looks like a design defect.
TMobile demanded that I send it in for warranty service.

No Vibration Either
I have a TMOUS HD2, and I may have been the cause of this happening after reading this. I have no clue what you're talking about, but I have dropped the phone a few times and though the problem didn't happen right after a drop, it was just odd how it started. I had it set to vibrate when I pressed any keys, and then I was texting and it stopped. So... the only thing that I've seen that is a case that I only seem to have, my phone vibrates AT WILL, but when it does, it's very raspy and sounds very 'sick' and loud. So, I am not about to open my phone. I'm tech savvy enough, but in no way have I ever tinkered with hardware. I got my HD2 back in May, so I'm hoping that I have a warenty through HTC at least. I haven't contacted anyone about this, so is it my best bet to just send it to HTC or contact T-Mobile? And I have insurance, but I purchased my phone from Walmart. lol. Help?

my vibrate function has been broken for several months and I've been delaying sending in for repair because I'm afraid of how long it will take (plus, it is the Australian version so I dont know if HTC North American will actually repair it under the current warranty)
I noticed that the bottom part of my flash does in fact seem to be pushed in. I'm considering doing what Maria did (opening it herself and popping the flash back into place). Does anyone have a sense of how long the repair takes from HTC?

VIBRATION and FLASH PROBLEM
i'm having the same problem... lower part of the flash is pushed in. and vibration sometimes functioning sometimes not... but worst my FLASH NOT WORKING AT ALL...

Now having the same problem. This is a design flaw if I've ever seen one.

Same problem here, vibration was not working, but I just fix it!
I bought this T-Mobile HTC HD2 off eBay, and turns out that the vibration was not working!!
Once I found out this thread and the information about how the flash cover was blocking the vibration motor from functioning, I was able to confirm this was exactly what was happening!
So, I decided to open up the phone. I did not had to extract the entire screen piece out, I just had to unscrew the four screws and use a "shower suction thingy" on the screen to help pull it out but just the top part (in other words, half way out), because I only needed access to where the flash cover was, and then I was able to use a thin screw driver to PUSH back the flash cover to it right position. Then, after putting everything back to its place, the vibrator motor started to work!!!
Maybe I will put some "super glue" on the flash plastic cover to secure from being accidentally being push in in the future. Anyways, thank you everyone here on the forum for sharing your ideas!

As a late follow-up to mine... I called HTC and got an RMA number. Put off mailing it in for 3 weeks while I backed it up and arranged a temporary phone.
Mailed it on a Friday. Had it back with a replaced back on Monday.
I was EXTREMELY happy with the customer service on this one!

Missed 3 calls today... realize phone is not vibrating. Check different things that should make phone vibrate... nothing...
Flash lens is not pushed in this time... I'm about a month out of warranty now. Wonder how this is going to go over

I had this exact problem occur a few days ago, and I opened it up and simply snapped the light cover back into place carefully. But my phone still wasn't vibrating, so I opened it up again and I saw that the black rubber around the vibrate motor was causing the part that creates the vibration to get stuck. I simply just snipped a bit away so that the it was free and ta da! A possible final fix of back button I FOUND~

Guys I did some search job today and have a possible final solution to the back button problem.

He is a Samsung Captivate user, right. Since I think if nexus s have met with is annoying problem, other samsung phones may either. So I did some search job in bed with my insensitive-back-button Nexus S, and found the Epic 4G, Samsung Focus, Captivate, etc. Almost all samsung phones got users annoyed by the problem.
Then I searched the Youtube to see if there is any Samsung user had ever achieved some success in solving the issue, and I found.(You won't know how terrible it is when you have to use a U.S VPN just to watch Youtube since it is blocked in here China mainland... really slow speed...together with facebook and twitter...ToT)
My understanding to the cause is: The picture of the back button is a thin line with an arrow, so the inside paint here may over-cover this thin line, which will definitely make the touch action less sensitive. And that's why there are less people got such problem with the other three keys.
And since capacitive buttons actually respond with the obvious temperature difference, so many frustrated nexus s users like me found under warmer environment the problem is less annoying...
Maybe this is only workable for insensitive problem. But hopefully this is a way.
Since I am a Chinese, it's impossible for me to have an exchange with the Bestbuy. So this is my only solution. But for most of you, it's highly recommended to take several exchanges before you definitely want to try this way.
Of course, try this at your own risk

what i did was tighten up the screws on the back of the phone... especially in the lower part of the phone. I haven't seen the issue since and initially it was a pretty often issue for me.

I think this is also a good way to solve the problem especially when you dont have to take to phone apart~
The theory may be the same, which is to make the distance between your touch and the module inside shorter cuz there is a piece of rubber under the button position so it can be possible~~

how did you access the screws at the bottom to tighten them?

Take off the battery cover. You have 6 bright screws around the edges of the phone. Tighten those up.

Although, I know this is not gonna help, but it comes from personal experience.
In the beginning, I used to be haunted by the silly back button "bizarre".
I factory reset the phone then voila. It's gone.
The reason I am confident to post this is, my brother's phone was fixed in
a same way as well. I know, I can be just lucky, but I just wanted to share.

thanks, I decided to watch the video on how to take apart the phone this morning, didn't do it, but it covered the screw access for the hidden 2 screws.
tightened the screws what little bit I could without fear of breaking something (they were already pretty tight), but it made no noticable difference.
I actually got my phone a few days before they were launched (friend is at&t store manager), so I 've been living with it as long as they have been available. it's annoying, and did get a little better with froyo, but not bad enough for me to tear apart the phone and risk damage to the screen...

there are no hidden or covered screws and the phone doesn't need to be taken apart.

Mine just started this thing where it presses the back button by itself. Pretty anoying and is making the phone useless. I can't do anything without it just hammering on the back button.

After posting the thread above, I updated OS to 2.3.3 and now back button is working fine.... I waited for a couple of weeks before confirming this, so hopefully anyone still waiting on a fix could try what I did. This seems to be a software problem more than anything else...
btw - 2.3.3 noticeably washes out colours, and there's a yellow/green tinge to white space. awful.

I did the same and the problem has gone - just realised after reading your post that factory reset solved this problem.

My phone is constantly on 3G but whenever it dips into Edge or has a weak data signal I notice the back button issue as well. And I tried a factory reset but it did
not fix the problem on 2.3.3

Back button issue
There are a few longer threads in this forum about the back button issue on the Nexus S -- for some people the back button doesn't work at all, and for others it turns on all by itself. There were a few replies from a Google employee (ryguy) who said it would be fixed in an upcoming OTA update, etc. but some reported having problems AFTER getting 2.3.2 when the problem didn't exist before. There are also other reports of tightening the screws on the back of the phone, which haven't tried but seemed to improve things for people whose back button WASN'T working at all.
For my phone around 2-3 weeks after buying it I had the back button come on all by itself. I fixed it by doing hard resets, as suggested on an earlier thread that deals with this issue (it's like 10 pages long but has the complete story of everyone's experience and fixes with this issue). Anyway, the point is for me after the first hard reset the problem persisted, so I did it a few more times (like maybe 5 times) and now it's gone.
There are some people who tried a hard reset (factory settings restore) and the problem still persists but I think that you have to do as many hard resets as possible (like, over and over and over) until the problem disappears. I'm rooted so I did a Nandroid backup first, then did 5 hard resets through Clockwork Recovery (select the "Wipe User Data" option), and after five hard resets I just flashed by backup and I was back to where I was, minus the back button issue. You don't have to be rooted, of course, to do this, but if you are, doing that ROM Manager backup allows you to quickly reinstall everything to the exact way it was after you're done with the five or 10 hard resets or whatever.
If you're unrooted you can power off the phone, then turn it on while holding the Up Volume button. This boots you into Bootloader mode and you can navigate around to do a factory reset. Or, if you are rooted and have ROM manager, you can use ClockworkMod Recovery like I did (see other threads on how to use these programs).
Anyway, again for me I had to do a bunch of these hard resets to fix the problem, so if it persists after the first two resets, I think you have to keep doing it until it disappears. Hope this helps - TC

i think mine is forever beat. 15 hard resets and its still there.

My apologies for bumping such an old thread... But i got a captivate to serve as a backup phone, and i slapped over ICS on to it..
Everything was super awesome.... BUT! not the Back button.
A few minutes of google'ing later, im here.
So after reading through this thread, and the one linked to in the OP, i opened up my Phone and ....well....went on with it.

Some Tips :
1: Once your down to the frame with the LCD assembly stuck to it, first remove the Antenna Module. Under that disconnect the black ribbon connector. (This ribbon connects the capacitive button module to the main board).
2: Before starting to Pry apart the LCD from the frame, take a hair dryer and heat up the edges of the LCD Assembly's frame. This helps a freaking lot in prying it apart. Plus it somewhat preserves the 3M adhesive tape present underneath, and can easily be reused.
3: Start prying open the LCD, from the Ear piece side. Take your time and DO NOT!! And i freaking mean, DO NOT!!!!! rush through while removing the LCD assembly.
4: When your almost half way through (or slightly more , but significantly above the capacitive buttons) take a peak between the frame and the LCD assembly, youll see the "Bridging/Connecting" ribbon i mentioned earlier and it might be stuck to the LCD's back.
-> the best way to proceed further is to simultaneously heat up the "glued" parts and slowly continue with removing the LCD. This way, the glue will not stick to the whatever parts it is meant to stick to , THAT strongly and will be much easier to remove.
5: Now as soon as you reach the part where you can see the Capacitive button module sticking to the LCD assembly, go into SUPER FREAKING SLOW mode... THE RIBBON UNDERNEATH IS VERY VERY FRAGILE! ONE YANK AND YOU'LL HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW CAPACITIVE MODULE.
*Best way to do this is, to again simultaneously heat the concerned parts while slowing pulling the LCD assembly and the capacitive button module apart.*
You can try going LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT-RIGHT alternatively, to slowly make the adhesive give away.
6: After you have the LCD assembly out, its pretty much dependent on how stable yours hands are at slowly etching out the Light gray parts.
-> You can hold the LCD assembly against a TABLE LAMP / some light source, to better see which parts of paint you need to etch out. *i Almost etched the whole of my back button* So be very careful and gentle as well PATIENT!
Before assembling the LCD back into the frame, i took a small piece of paper (about the size of the capacitive button module) and stuck it between the frame and the module. Just so that it makes better contact with the LCD assembly.
7: Stick the LCD back onto the frame and again heat up the edges. Also while putting the LCD back together, make sure the adhesive tape has not lumped up on any of the edges (This might have happened while trying to pry the LCD out) , if it has, then just gently even/flatten it out. Stick the LCD back and heat the edges. Rest, just take a soft cloth and squeeze the LCD's edges and frame together,so as to make sure they stick together properly. The heat really helps in bonding things here.
Assemble back the phone, blah blah.
I used a CREDIT CARD to start prying the LCD away from the frame. It was pretty easy, because of the heat.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU SOMEHOW MANGE TO MESS UP YOUR PHONE! Specifically the LCD and the CAPACITVE TOUCH MODULE!

[Q] Bottom half of screen not responding to touch

I had an exam and removed the battery for my phone for the duration. When I put it back in, the bottom half of my screen stopped responding to touch. The screen itself is unharmed and uncracked. The S Pen still works flawlessly. However, the bottom half of the screen ("above" about 890 pixels on the Y axis) simply does not respond to normal touch. In addition, the volume buttons no longer change my notification volume. They still work for music volume, just not touch volume. When I long-press the power button, the power menu sits at the very top of the screen and has black covering the whole bottom of the screen for some reason. When I receive calls, the buttons are right at the top. Because of this, this seems to be some sort of software issue, but I have no idea what would cause it. Has anyone with more experience with Samsung devices seen this before? Multiple restarts and battery pulls have done nothing.
EDIT: In case anyone else encounters this, it had something to do with my case. I think my phone thought it was a smart cover for some reason. I enabled and disabled smart cover and then removed and replaced the case. It's working fine now.
EDIT: Never mind, that was a coincidence. The issue is DEFINITELY that the phone thinks it has a smart cover on it, but it has nothing to do with my own case.

I've had much the same problem. While the S-Pen was able to make selections that the touchscreen wouldn't, other S-Pen functions such as Air Command and being able to start an Action Memo wouldn't work. Waiting for an extended period of time (like 24 hours) and all of a sudden it started working again. However, while I was waiting, rebooting - even performing a factory reset - didn't' fix it! I just now rebooted it and it's not working again, and it's not in a case.
Where do you find the option to enable and disable Smart Cover? On the Note 2, it was (apparently) under Security / Device Administrators, but I don't find it there. The only option I could find was in Accessories / S View Cover / Automatic Unlock but changing this setting (including rebooting between settings) hasn't solved it.

Sadly, it was just coincidence that it randomly stopped happening when I enabled and disabled the auto-unlock feature with Smart Cover. My phone started doing it again and I've been unable to repair it. I went to Verizon and they wiped my phone before telling me I'll just have to get it replaced with a refurbished one. Very frustrated. Shame there aren't any AOSP based ROMs yet (like CyanogenMod)-- they'd probably fix it since the cover thing wouldn't be a feature.

I'm still not totally sure of the origin of the issue, but it seems to come from a combination of hardware and software problems. The hardware sensor thinks I have the case on, so the software changes things around. When I call people, I get the S View Cover style call screen. If I change the toggle in accessory settings to automatically unlock the phone when opening the cover, hitting the lock button automatically unlocks the phone as though I had no lockscreen. However, when this is disabled, the lock screen is NOT in the S View Cover form-- it looks stock. This confuses me.
Any ideas from anyone else getting the issue?

Just to add my experience as I go. This afternoon I received an error that my SMS data could not be downloaded. Upon sliding down the notifications I was unable to control much. I ripped the majority of my hair out over this.... My pen works flawlessly everywhere though. I eventually discovered it works fine on the bottom half as you described. I have to run to some appointments, but I'll touch back after I try a few things.

Maybe it was caused by the battery insertion or backplate replacement. Perhaps too much pressure or an uneven pressure damaged the circuitry, which is now loose and causing the intermittent error.
Or perhaps it was a static discharge from the battery.
Both cases seem to me to be warrenty items.

I thought the only thing necessary to unroot is to flash the stock ROM. The download is linked from the de la Vega post.

I have the same issue. I ve been trying to understand why this happened but no luck. I tried everything from updating to reseting. I first noticed it when i took the battery out as well. but the problem kinda fixed it self so i thought the phone has a spaz or something. but when i removed the battery again it happened again.
I took it to the people i bought it from and all they can say is cause there were a couple of scratches on the side of the case that it may not fall under warranty...
i was pretty angry cause its only two months old and the warranty is for a year. and the problem started happening while i was overseas so its been like that for almost a month. hopefully the sales guy is just talk cause its not up to him its just his "opinion" as he put it.
Did they explain to you why this happened? or if this is a common issue?

The Problem:
The half bottom screen is not working. Including the back button, the option button and the home buttom. they only work if you use the S Pen. Except for the home button. The volumes button do not work either. So the Solution is this..
take off the battery while the phone is on. YES, do not turn off the telephone and the take off the battery. Just take off the battery while the phone is on. It should work. I hope this is the solution.
One more thing. Do not allow your phone to dried up the battery completly so this wont happen again. It is better to turn it off before it dries up.!

This tough me a good lesson! never buy a Phone from not trusted retailer, it is better to pay the full price a good store. The people that sold me the phone has a crappy warrraty like if the screen it cellphone is complete off they wont allow me to use the warranty and my phone had faulty battery conecction so it was off. then I paid 100 dollars to be repaired then this problem.

But I had a flip cover and I separated that from phone and thanks God,surprisingly It's Fixed and it works like a charm!!! after that I used my original cover and there is no problem till now.

I haven't gone back to refresh my memory but it seems to me that all these occurrances were caused by removing the back cover. Try removing it and the battery and firmly press on every spot with your thumb. First place the device face down on table padded with a single layer of a blanket. Remove the SIM and SD card and firmly reinsert. Press the back cover on and try it, then return it for warranty if it is still bad.

I also was faced with this issue today at the start of my morning BUT I FOUND A SOLUTION
I have a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 N900P Stock ROM/ no root, no mods/custom kernels/boots etc...
My device side effects were
The bottom half of my screen was not responding to my fingers,
When you press the Power Button, The options appeared on the top section of the screen instead of being the center
When I press the volume up/down keys, The volume would raise and lower, But the screen that pops up and shows you the volume had increased or decreased didnt show up
Only way to use device was with S Pen
Basically all the issues everyone listed, I had them.
Now my solution; if the issue is a hardware issue.
After dissembling my phone to see what each hardware part of the phone controls, I've come to the conclusion that there was an issue with my USB Dock Connector section of the phone. I uploaded a image pointing which connector controls it. I tried to just wipe and clean it up a bit because mines had some residue on the underneath of it. Then I plugged it back in and it started back to work %100. After I tried restarting it a few times and shaking the device up, it still works; Although I am still going to order a replacement USB Charging Port with flex cable just in case.

most likely happen if u ever dropped ur phone to the ground ----------- and reboot ur phone some what later time. (can be days or months).
Temp Solution to this problem is...
face down your phone to the flat floor or a table, gently hit the back, strong enough to shock the devide, but not that strong to crack your screen.
one other simple way is to drop your phone to the floor, screen is facing down, from about 30 cm high from the floor.
