URGENT question regarding s-off, root/custom recovery/custom rom - HTC U Ultra Questions & Answers

Hi i just got the u ultra, i need some informations regarding the s-off thing, since I'm totally new to htc phones.
As far as i understood, getting s-off on nougat requires a paying service (like sunshine)...what i dont know is that if i really need it.
I want to flash a custom Rom, with a custom recovery and root access. Do i have to be s-off to achieve this?
Being forced to pay for it, might make me return to phone or not...so it is kind of important.
I will be really grateful to anyone who will help me.
Thanks.

I don't have s-off, only bootloader unlocked (this for free from the HTC website directly I think).
For only custom recovery and cRom (including everything else, e.g. magisk, xposed and so on) that's enough.

[Q] D2 flashed to Mobi..cannot root or put custom rom?

Hi everyone! This should be a pretty simple question...but it is a bit beyond my current understanding level...
I have a droid 2 with 2.3.4 and the 621... I just got it flashed from VZW to Mobi PCS (i wanted to do it myself, but i could not find the PRL SID/NID, MDN/MIN etc on the internet anywhere), anyways they offer unlimited data..which is SWEET! Currently everything works as it should..SMS, Data/Web, Voicemail, Calls, and text messaging.
However, I want to tether via wifi without paying the $15/month extra fee. I understand from my research on this forum that rooting and getting a custom rom would solve this, BUT..the guys at the "unlocking"-store told me that I will have issues if i upgrade to 629, put a custom rom, OR if i root the phone...?? I'm certainly not an expert with androids YET...but it seems as long as I back up the APN's (and put them back after rooting/flashing new rom) nothing else should get modified during rooting or installing a custom rom...is that correct???
Or am i missing something? If so, can someone tell me what other settings or files i need to make backups of before i root?
THANKS!
Also, I hate to ask NOOB questions when i could go searching for the answer...but if someone could also tell me the best rom, kernel, and easiest root method...haha!
Well...thanks to sd_shadow and his expert knowledge...i am rooted! -now its time to bootstrap and see if custom roms will work for Mobi..or if i will lose any functionality.
edit-->NICE, installing CM7.2 did not alter any of my settings for Mobi..everything works! AND, 3G has less lag! SWEEEET!!

Root without unlocking bootloader

Hi,
Is there a method out for rooting the phone without unlocking the bootloader?
I don't want to unlock it because I want to keep the warranty and I don't need a custom recovery
I'm wondering this too. I'm fine with the stock Moto rom. It's vanilla enough for me to not need a custom rom like CM. But I need root and would rather not install a custom recovery to do so unless I know I can get my hands on the stock firmware (for the recovery.img) and flash the recovery back to stock.
Still any news about this? I'm having the same concern about warranty
No this is currently not possible. There is no exploit avaiable for Lollipop on any device to root. Possibly in the future based on the past.
This was the same thing i wanted to know, i like the stock rom but i need root for some of my essential apps. But i don't want to unlock bootloader and void warranty...
You live in the Netherlands. Rooting/Unlocking bootlader or flashing different roms can never ever void your consumer rights.
Source? And is this also true for germany?
It's just EU regulated consumer law. And yes that's also true for Germany.
I would like to have a source too, because i've never heard of it. And if **** goes wrong i've got it on paper, you know
Edit: found a article http://piana.eu/root
i Quote " The Free Software Foundation Europe argues that it is legal to root or flash any device. According to the European Directive 1999/44/CE, replacing the original operating system with another does not void the statutory warranty that covers the hardware of the device for two years unless the seller can prove that the modification caused the defect"
Maybe for you Bootloader-unlocking is cause of that ok.
But I don't want to loose my Data. And there is no posibility to backup all data without root.
Has anyone a solution?
Nope, there's no method to root without unlocking bootloader

questions about root and unlock bootloader

Hi all,
I want to ask to confirm a few things since my experience with android almost came from samsung notes, and I always unlock bootloader and root it right after I get my phones. Thanks in advance.
I bought a moto x pure edition from bh photo recently, and was thinking about unlock bootloader, root and enjoy the some features that need root access and/or customized room.
But I see that the vanilla (manufacturer) rom is very good and the release of OTA updates are relative reliably fast. My questions is
if I unlock bootloader and root, do I still have the OTA capability (I have to ask since I have not explore a lot customized room side of the moto x pure edition)?
if yes, what will happen if the OTA is applied? phone relocked or bootloader unlock and root access as usual?
Thanks
If you unlock bootloader, you will still have OTAs, but, im not sure if you root will still have OTA, i think yes, i think you loose OTAs if you change something in the firmware, but im not sure with the root tbh...

If you are unlocked only, it has zero effect on updates... if you unlocked and modified in anyway (root, TWRP, Xposed, whatever) the update with fail and either get stuck in recovery or bootloop, usually just wiping cache will get it booting again. OTAs cannot be applied unless you are purely stock.
Moto's will not relock the bootloader unless you specifically do it, but really there is no need to ever... other than purely security, there is nothing that can be regained by relocked that was lost in unlocking, including your warranty. Once you have been issues an unlock token, whether it is used or not, your warranty is gone forever.
Also be aware that rooting Moto's on Marshmallow is a bit different than older ways of rooting and requires a few extra steps, do your research on systemless and you won't have any problems.

Root with stock recovery?

Hey.
I'm new when i comes to rooting..
All i need to know is.. Is it possible to gain root access with stock rom and stock recovery?
And if so could someone link me to a "how to" guide that confirmes success on rooting with stock rom and stock recovery.. No TWRP.. No custom recovery..
Just plain root access no extra jibber jabber.
Basically i want to have root access without it being easily recognisable if a phone store salesman or technician with basic phone knowledge were to look at the phone.. i want him/her to see a stock Android version on Samsung S8. But still have root access.
This is a European version S8 SM-G950F
I believe that is the Exynos variant.
Please Help?

Best Way to Prepare A Rooted S8 For Selling

Hallo everyone, I need your opinion/advice/experience on this.
It's time to sell my S8, but I rooted it! Most of us know what that means.
I want the buyer to have the best experience possible and him to be happy with the device.
I just don't know what to do...!
First Method: Flash Stock via odin. But then doesn't he get like warning massages from S Health or so that his device is been tempered with? And still no OTA... maybe even other downsides I can't think of right know or I even don't know.
Second Method: Flash a custom rom that is fairly stock. Now he can use S Health and such, but what about Apps that detect root like banking? I imagine he want's to open his banking app or whatever and a massage pops up saying this doesn't run on rooted devices. Still no OTA and I'm afraid that maybe that version of custom rom would have a nasty bug that I don't notice and him or her having trouble again...
So yeah I really don't know what's the best. Maybe you guys sold old devices that had been rooted. How did you do it? What would you recommend?
Thx everyone :fingers-crossed:
