Essential Info? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Just had a few questions regarding this amazing device. I keep hearing references to "slots" and I am assuming this has something to do with the A/B partition?
How does one flash to one slot, so to speak?
Also, the recovery is inside the boot image, if I'm not mistaken, that is definitely new to me. (coming from Nexus 5.)
Down the road I plan on rooting and installing a custom ROM, when I have a better understanding of this phone and to avoid screwing this thing up.
Is it difficult to learn all these new ins and outs? Been searching over XDA and trying to learn all this.

Wow, lots to learn on this device! Might be a while before I work up the courage to eventually root and flash a ROM, gotta wrap my mind around all this. Thanks very much for the info, I'll be reading this very thoroughly.

It's not as bad as you think! Just make sure you read it and always have the computer ready with factory images when you start messing around

Definitely a good idea, now I just have to find myself a USB-C to USB cord to save my ass in the event I mess something up. Chris Panton has some really good YouTube videos on the Essential as well for anyone else interested.

the very basic ones "Programming and linux Knowledge"....if you got these, you are already 90% success....
Then,Linux operating system in your PC such as ubuntu, fedora or opensuse....
Kitchen...such as coffee shop....................
Again, Knowledge is important...It is not easy as you think,if you don't any Linux stuffs
well,I know that its not easy.
But I have plenty of time and I would like to have a try.so where can I find caffee shop for hd2 updated software?

All the best...wish someone can teach you...But please don't open another thread to ask for help....
This kind of threads already repeated many times...
the others are kinda saying that if you have to ask, then you just aren't ready to do it
its like asking someone about how to repair cars or build your first computer...no simple set of tools and a tutorial will get you anywhere

Agree with you...If I provide you all the tools and ask you to repair a sport car. It seems impossible...

Hmm, I built my first computer by looking inside another one, wasn't hard at all.
nkos719, knowing how to search for information fast and efficiently is one of the most important assets of a developer. Make the search function your most important tool and you will progress fast.
I looked everywhere but the only tool I found was the Coffee Shop kitchen v1 but I cannot open the files included in the rar file.
That's because it only works on Linux systems..
If you do not have access to an Linux environment, better forget ROM development for Android.

Putting the hardware is the easy part! I was doing that for my father when I was 7/8! Only now than Im turning 18 have I learnt to make a flawlessly working computer!
I agree with everyone else here...
Noone can give you the answer you want.
It took me months of hard work, with no help from anyone else but text books to be able to write java for android.
Thats your best hope.
Good luck though, Keep at it! Its worth it in the end.

Hey, mate...I have looked at your photos, great shots...Keep it up....Cheers.

Starting to lose faith in this phone.

Every time i come online and look up a question i seem to find all jargon now to explian. im am not a Tech minded person and dont understand jargon but brought the phone as i liked it but since i brought it all i seem to find is battery issues which i dont have lag fixes which my phone seems fast enough. Its on Froyo 2.2 and rooted with z4 root what ever this all means lol. my mate was playing on my phone and sais ghe rooted it while i was cookin th tea. lol.
right i was looking for a theme to personalise it a bit more but i seem to find themes for jpo.tpi etc does this mean i need a theme that fits with my current firmware as i honestly dont have a clue?
Do some reading. There are a lot of really good how-to guides on this forum that people do not have an excuse not to know how to do something. If you are not comfortable doing it, don't.
I am a technical person, but I have a difficult time reading technical stuff as I have ADD and can not concentrate long enough to understand some things. What do I do, well, I only do the things I am comfortable doing. I would like to cook my own ROM's but I can't concentrate long enough to learn how to do it, so I don't do it.
Flashing your phone with a new theme, a new ROM, or a new kernel to speed it up can kill it it if you do not know what you are doing. If you see a theme you want to install, there should be instructions how to do it on that page, if there isn't, go to another one.
Ian
I agree to the previous poster.
Just read the HOW-TO´s, they are really good and well written.
Rooting and flashing a custom ROM is pretty easy. When you have followed a guide once you will see how easy this really is.

What do you think the means?
As mentioned before, if you do not know what you are doing, DON'T! But if you are like me fed up with the crappy stuff that comes with the phone and all the lagz, you can try to flash your phone.
It is important that you follow the how to's and read 2/3 times carefully before you start the whole process.

Stuck with no OS.Please help.

okay my n7 wifi tab is currently stuck with no os.i accidentally wiped everything out in recovery and no toolkit is working.its not downloading and installing the files to extract and install correctly.please help me before i break this thing.thanks in advance
stop using a toolkit.
use adb to push a rom zip to your device
OR
use fastboot to flash stock google images to device
if it doesnt work there, you will at least get an indication of what the problem is.

well i was trying to learn developement but due to the fact that my satellite p755-s5393 i7 octo-core does not play nice with linux's wifi, i cant learn developement as of yet. so therefore i choose not to learn it, yet.

Yeah. OK. I tried helping you and you ignored the advice. Good luck 'learning development'
I do hope you comprehend the irony of your entire thread before responding.
Wants to learn development.
Uses a toolkit.
Also you could man up and get your WiFi working in Linux (I haven't seen a chip that just won't work in Linux) or you could use a VM to learn. Since you know, you had to tell us what a badass laptop you have, it should support a VM nicely.

I think that Pirateghost has a point with regard to toolkits...
@podagee.. you really do need to get used to using fastboot/ADB and similar command line interfaces, and subsequently eschew toolkits. Particularly if you want to get involved in development work.
But I also 'feel' that @Pirateghost has become somewhat jaded and cynical with regard to beginners, who perhaps just need a bit of a helping hand. (Not that I'm saying you didn't give it here, Pirateghost).
I'm not having a go at you, Pirateghost... in fact, I enjoy reading your frequent scathing and withering comments (oft times, they make me laugh out loud)... but everybody was a beginner once - even yourself, some nearly 7,800 posts ago.
Just my thoughts anyway... (don't mean to irritate anybody).
Rgrds,
Ged.

Maybe you should talk to your 9year old son since he's on your level, haha.take it easy pirateghost. You actually sparked some interest with me, so, I went ahead and read about toolkits and adb and fast boot. You should of put your words into better terms, not so sarcastic, but, I eventually read about what you were saying, or trying to say. Now I see that adb and fast boot are in fact way better and more reliable than any toolkits. Thanks for the motivation to read

That's all I want people to do.
THINK and READ.
You learn better that way.
Ponder this for a moment. If I were not so abrasive and annoying would you have done any of that reading? Or would you have just gone on about your business and put your blinders on?
Sometimes you have to goad people to get them to act and respond. I don't mind making some enemies to get a point across.
I am glad you took the time to learn the basic tools of the trade.
No enemies made here my bradda..I get frustrated with people of your kind ,but, if that's what helps us learn then so be it. Thank you for the tough love pirate ghost.

just softbricked my phone and i need to use it fast, help me please!

well i'm in big trouble it looks like, i followed this video into a huge mess where now my phone won't load past the white AT&T screen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H_gBP5Dd_8
phone was rooted fine, DLed goomanager, followed the instructions and then in the recovery screen i chose "power off" thinking i could just turn it back on
WRONG
I followed it perfectly up to 3:00, and then i chose the reboot/power off options. And bricked.....not really sure how that happened, but help would be greatly appreciated.

Simple don't follow a bloody video. Read and learn about what your doing before you do it. Most videos are out dated and don't give you the needed info incase something goes wrong.
Also a heads up. Asking for help fast does no good as this is not a support forum.

That was a little harsh.
Video's are IMO, a good idea. If you don't know what you're doing, then follow instructions. So, the OP did good IMO.
That video is only a couple weeks old and is for the Galaxy S4.
I didn't watch it (no sound card) but it doesn't matter now.
OP, what does happen when you press the volume up + power + home button to get into the recovery?
Did you try pulling the battery for 30+ seconds yet?
You should not be seeing a white AT&T screen at any time. You should be booting into recovery, where you will then flash a new ROM.
Well, I mean it shouldn't have killed your current ROM. But that could be a separate issue.
If you can get into recovery, then just toss a ROM onto your external SD card if you have one.
If not, then use ADB push to push a ROM onto your internal SD where you can then flash it.
Or, Odin back to stock.

Telling people to read in this forum is futile. It only gets you called names like do*che and d*ck. Kenny knows, he had to clean up a response to my post telling someone they needed to do some reading. It's sickening how lazy people are these days. But it's the truth. You won't learn anything by being spoon fed the info. Sometimes the best answer to give someone is to just read. This isn't a support center. It's a development forum. People need to learn the basics on their own. Zelendel said it best in his legendary post. And if I could find it right now I would link to it.
And if you're gonna follow a video, try one that was made by someone like AdamOutler, not some rando with a random website.

Then why do you ask how to do these things? You have to unlock bootloader, learn how to go into EDL mode and use MiFlash and use EDL flashable zip files. Learn about TWRP and flashing compatible custom ROMS, zips, rooting (system and systemless root are two very different kinds) etc etc
https://forum.xda-developers.com has EVERYTHING you need to learn about everything Android in general which i suggest you fill your mind with. https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to has everything you need to learn about the Axon 7 such as rooting, TWRP, custom ROMs, and everything else.
If it is too hard and too much for you and you do not understand, then this whole custom ROM thing is not for you. Everyone started out as you, but if you do not help YOURSELF in finding out these things, you will never learn and this is not for you. Everyone who knows these things were taught and taught themselves and had questions much like yourself, but you keep asking the same questions and no one will help you because you do not search. Your questions are so vague that they have most likely been answered already a long time ago. Please learn to search and go through the forums first before asking your questions.

Don't worry about it. Some people like riding their high horse here. Listen, first do search, and do read up on everything you can. Take your time! If you don't feel comfortable, then don't do it yet. Make friends here in this forum, there are plenty of people here who will point you in the right direction. Unless you plan on taking advantage of custom roms/recovery/root and the capabilities of such, I will say that you might really want to remain stock.
