Scratch on screen - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Ended up with a small scratch on my screen. No idea how it got there as I never keep anything other than my phone in my right pocket and it didn't come from the one drop I had a few weeks back that only very mildly chipped the bottom of the phone.... Anybody know of any ways to possibly fix a scratch or am I stuck with it or using my sprint protection for another screen?

Sand. A single grain of sand in your pocket, or stuck on your finger, or anywhere, that rubs against your phone WILL scratch it. Gorilla Glass 5 only has a hardness of 6 or 6.5, while a typical grain of sand is quartz, which has a hardness of 7. Get a screen protector and a case if scratches are an issue.

Maybe not scratch proof but I would probably say scratch resistant. I have hand my omnia7 for 7-8 months and it has one small scratch less than half a centimeter and thinner than a hair. it is only visible when the screen is off and i have cleaned it well or when it is on a white screen, if looking very closly there is slight discolouration.
i dont take perticular care of what goes in my pocket with my phone and and not extra cautious though i have only dropped my phone once onto a wooden floor.
in short I have a scratch that is barely noticable and i am not looking for a screen protector as i belive the disadvantages of haveing one would outweight the tiny advantage that having one may have. also i dont think anyone with a screen protector that has the scratch that i have would consider the bother of replacing it!
hope that helps!

thank you, NikD1.
Mine fell down, and - how else could it be - on the screen. This has happened now three times I think. Not a single scratch. Not even the tiniest one.
That screen is really great!
As I hate using protection foils that made me buy this phone
By accident dropped it 2-3 times, holds very well. The screen/phone i have in a special case tighten to the belt so that it does not get any scratches on the screen.
Amazes me that i don't have the tinniest scratch on my screen; the screen seems to be very effective against scratches and damages.
No case, no screen protector, always in my pocket, but separate from keys or coins
Fell once or twice from my hands, marble floor
Fell maybe 3 times from the table, marble floor
Fell twice down the road, on concrete
...plus it was submerged in beer !
it hold perfectly, but I do see a tiny dent right in the center of the screen when sunlight is quite strong. Nothing major, though
My HTC Desire at this point was way more battered
I don't use a case or screen protector and I've got the phone in my pocket everyday. After a few months still not a single scratch
I've had mine for 8 months and I have several scratches on mine. they are all from sitting in my pocket without anything else in them.
I noticed my first scratch quite early on (within a few months) but these scratches are actually pretty hard to see and you have to be looking for them pretty deliberately to see them.
I wonder if it is the same with the other folks... you may have scratches on your screen but you probably can't see them very well.
i dont understand why samsung dont have used glorilla glass for this device
When I compare my Omnia7 with my former phone(Xperia X1) is Omnia7's screen like a rock, but you can scratch if you carry it with key's or any sharp objects...
I carry my omnia in a Case around my waist and have no scartches yet

AFAIK it IS gorilla glass. (As it is the same as for the wave)
I don't think it has Gorilla glass, I got my phone, it was shiny and new, no scratches on the screen whatsoever (I inspected it thoroughly for defects) and after a few days of using, noticed a scratch when I cleaned the screen, thin as a hair but 2cm long Thankfully when I applied the screen protector, it has hidden it really well. I barely used the phone and I always kept it in my left pocket (which I only ever exclusively use for my mobile phone!)
i also have some scratches. after a month of use they appeared. i have no idea how they got there, i take a very good care of the phone, it never gets into contact with anything other than my fingers.
but the scratches are only noticeable when the screen is perfectly clean (which is almost never), turned of and looked from a specific angle.
I have more issues with grease. those guys are killing me.
Oh my god, so i'd better buy a screen protector for my omnia 7 :-(((
Yes, Gorilla Glass... After 3 months of use I still don't have a scratch (knock on wood) even without a screen protector...
no, it's not I am pretty sure... I got a little scratch now... I just want to cry now....
All I know is that both me and my sister got Omnia 7s back in November last year.
I put a screen protector and case on mine and am very careful with my phone and its still perfect.
She on the other hand has no case and no screen protector and is not very careful with her things. She has one little scratch on hers where her dog knocked it across a tile floor. It has been dropped numerous times and shoved in a bag with all sorts.
I'd say it's pretty resiliant.
A used phone without any scratches on the screen is a disgrace
Gorilla glass, even with the proper branding aren't totally scratch proof, to the best of my knowledge. Anyway, two omnia7 for 8 months, not a scratch (almost )

Gorilla glass is marketing at its best

Hello. I have managed to scratch my precious S4 screen just after using the phone for a week. Yeah I do have a mild case of OCD (at least what I think is mild ) considering that I do use a pouch for it I wonder what is the point with all those videos showing off the impressive Gorilla glass x. Of course the second I noticed it I applied a screen protector. So much for Gorilla glass..
If you want a pouch....buy a kangaroo.
As everyone will tell you Gorilla is scratch RESISTANT NOT SCRATCH PROOF.
The ads that demo how tough Gorilla glass is show them using coins, keys and knives on the screen mainly. These are "softer" than the layer on the glass so it doesn't scratch.
Sand however is very "hard" so it can easily scratch Gorilla glass. If you got sand in the pouch and it rubbed on the screen it will definitely scratch it.
It's actually a very good product and is more resistant than other glass but it isn't indestructible and the manufacturers don't claim it to be.
Sand is a screens worst enemy.
P.S Why did you post this in Q+A?

Had my S4 for over 6 months with just the case in the picture. I check my screen every now and then for scratches and marks. I literally can't see a THING on that screen and it's very impressive. I'm pretty careful with my phones but my last phone, HTC Mozart, had a much softer screen. Seriously, you might be used to it now but old displays were a LOT more sensitive than these new screens...
Dropped mine with no cover on concrete twice. Landed screen down both times, no scratches, no issues at all. What did you do to the screen? As said above it's scratch RESISTANT. Sand and other abrasive substances will scratch it. Sand has eroded land masses over time when you think about it.
I always have to ask this as there are a LOT of clones about, is your device a real s4?

ZF2 GorillaGlass3 protection is just a joke!!

My Z008 has got scratches out of nowhere. I always check before placing my phone under pant pockets. Still don't know how come these scratches are appearing. Now looking for a screen guard.
It's the gorilla glass 3 problem, I had the same scratches on my galaxy s5,so I got a tempered glass which is allot better in terms of micro scratches.
But fear not it's not the actual glass that is being scratched but the nano coating on top of the glass which is used to give a soft slide feeling, that's why you only see then with the screen off and from an angle.
The camera lens also gets scratched pretty easily, ad the glossy black plastic frame around the screen also develops small dents even if my phone is in a Ringke case.
I guess they really had to cut corners to give good specs at a cheap price.

With original zen cover no scratches, both zcreen and camera lens. Only a little scratch from wife's dimond earring near front cam, she forget to close cover before phone call, so for me filmscreen is waste of money and touch felling, useless
Apparently all material very soft. Frame around screen really soft.

I have had my phone since mid July and no scratches, black bezel around camera lens still perfect. Phone goes into my pocket every day. I use a dedicated pocket ie: nothing else goes in that pocket.
With the inexpensive Ringke case Impossible to scratch camera bezel or lens when placing phone on its back as it is then inset. For people that carry stuff in pocket with the phone I am sure a case would help prevent scratches. $200 or $300 for the phone spend $10.99 for a case. Lots of people must be buying the case as price has gone up several dollars since I got it.
Tempered Glass protector
If you all are experiencing these micro scratches, it's sort of an inevitable thing. Gorilla glass scratches with grains of sand or little things from your pocket. If you're really worried about your phone, you can purchase a tempered glass screen protector, and a case to fully protect your device!
Case and tempered glass screen protector are a must. Added them as soon as I took my zen out the box
Tempered glass save my screen from crack also.
Even glass broken, but my phone screen is protected.
I've had no issues other then dropping and breaking the screen but the repair guys told me this phone for the cost is really well built with easy repairability

I quit using a case months ago (cheap crappy pleather wallet case I bought for it just irritates me, and my wife pinched my clear soft gel case). No scratches on screen, one or two minor dents on the black plastic edges but you'd need a magnifying glass to notice them. Very pleased - my previous phone (black slate iPhone 5) got scratches on it if you as much as looked at it, and silver scratches on slate iodised aluminium looked bloody awful.
i have a cover and dont worry about scratch )
Yea same problem got alot of faint scratches out of nowhere threw a tempered glass on
Have quie a few phones and tablets, every one since the Samsung Galaxy S3 has had a tempered glass screen protector installed.
I know this phone is supposed to be cheap in comparison with say, the note 5, but I don't have around $500AUD to throw away just because I cracked the screen, even $200 to repair is a kick in the nuts....
Those glass protectors have helped a lot of my phones survive intact.
I don't care if I don't notice the scratches when the screen is on.
For those hoping miracles on gorilla glass:
Diamonds only can be scratched by diamonds
Sapphire only can be scratched by sapphire or diamonds
Gorrillaglass can be scratched by the diamonds, sapphire or whatever is harder than GorillaGlass, this is the rule.
Where you can find things harder than gorilla glass?
a Jewelry ? sure,
the floor? - maybe, some dirt particles actually are are sand, in some places sand is composed by limestone someties harder than gorillaglass.
your pockets? very likely specially if you have two cellphones, the sapphire cover on the lens camera easy can scratch the gorillaglass on other phone, also some pencils have diamond particles on its graphite, further DIAMONDS PARTICLES ARE VERY COMMON, SINCE SiNTETIC DIAMONDS ARE USE AS ABRASIVE ON MANY DRILLING TOOLS.
So, protect your gorillaglass if you hate scratches, harder is not warranty to be invulnerable.

Screen covered in scratches after one week

Anyone else have an issue with how easily the screen scratches. After a week my screen is completely covered in scratches. I never dropped or had keys in the same pocket as the phone. I thought GG4 should have prevented this. It is hard to use the phone now with all of the scratches. It is very distracting.
Zero scratches on mine, no screen protector (yet, on order) and do carry it in my front pocket.
No scratches on mine yet either. Only things that will scratch this screen are things that are harder, i.e. sand, some metal, diamonds. I know its too late now but I would suggest you turn your pockets inside out when you (or your laundress) does your wash. Sounds like you have some contaminates there.
maybe sand from beach? it can have quartz in it.
There are definitely no contaminates in my pocket. This phone scratches way easier than any other phone I have had. Funny I though the aluminium body is were I would have to worry, but nope, not a mark on the body. The glass on the other hand is badly scratched up.
Shame Nexus Protect doesn't cover these type of issues.
Spontaneous scratches? So you just woke up one morning and your screen was so scratched that you can't use the phone? Do you live in Area 51? I love to see a picture of that taken with your iPhone.
I never said they spontaneously showed up one morning. But the screen isn't as hard as people are claiming. I never had an issue with N5 and scratches, and now this screen is covered in them after only a week.
To be clear the phone is physically still very much usable. These are very superficial scratches only visible when the phone is dim and at specific angles. But it is very annoying when you see them.
The glass is gorilla glass 4.
It's harder than any gorilla glass that came before it.
Dems the facts...
I don't know what scratched your glass, but it isn't the glass's fault...
not a single scratch here
do u live close to the coast? have sand on ur pockets? Sand(silica) can be harder than glass and cause scratches
Mine uncovered for almost a week while I wait for screen protection.
No scratches.
I'm with GSMan201; I've had the 6p for about a month and after a week had multiple small scratches on the top of the screen near the speaker, and now I'm noticing more small scratches appearing on other parts of the screen. As previously mentioned, they aren't major scratches by any means and can only be seen with the screen off and phone held at certain angles. However, it's quite disconcerting as I had both the nexus 4 and nexus 5 and neither seemed to scratch as easily as this phone...... I should also mention scratches occurred when the phone was naked as well as with a wallet style case that covers the screen, and to my knowledge has never been in contact with materials that would have scratched it. On a positive note, it's the only disappointment I've had with the phone so far.
I've looked mine over closely and no scratches on the screen area at all. No case on the device, carried in a belt holder and no screen protector.
I've got a small scratch near my front-facing camera. It's just a matter of time before everyone's glass scratches, so be sure to get screen protectors.
It seems that these threads pop up for every popular phone. You should buy a screen protector based on whether you care if you're screen is scratched, not whether you think it will scratch or not. There's really no reason not to buy one now that glass screen protectors have gotten so cheap, even cheaper than the nicer plastic ones were just a few years ago.

I would bet that the coating on the screen is scratched and not the actual glass. Only takes a grain of sand or dirt in the pocket. These scratches don't distort the pixels so are only visible at certain angles and in direct light. I noticed (after wearing the same pair of jeans for a few days in a row ) that a few showed up on my 6P so I bought a TGSP. Gets a little cloudier in direct light than the naked screen but it's worth it for peace of mind. I've had these on every screen I've ever owned to some degree including iPhone 4s, 5s, 6 and... DINC!
anyone with diamond stub earrings?
Same here, three scratches, after less than a month, including a long one (and disturbing on white content) in the middle. All scratches are horizontal. I guess it's not Gorilla Glass 4... I still prefer this over a broken screen though, but it's not that pleasant

Phone screens always find a way to get scratched. No matter what the glass is, expect it to scratch. End of

S7 Edge slanted streak marks on screen randomly??

Heh guys so the story is I went from an alpha glass tgsp to a gpel one. It was running good till in tried putting it into my caselogy wavelength case, despite being slim it cracked the protector. Suffice to say in running the screen with no protector. I have been noticing these streak marks only in direct light. They are slanted and go past the screen to the top bezzle. I can't seem to wipe it off, but fingerprints cover it up. it doesn't seem to be scratches as I can't feel anything and they are too thick so if I was a scratch it would atlest feel uneven. I didn't drop the phone screen first either and I had no contact with glass shards or sand so is this some adhesive or the coating of the screen ??
