I know this may sound far-fetched, but I am proposing a possible merger of developers from all the Galaxy S series. I know that the hardware may slightly differ, but apart from a led flash here, ffc, keyboard, and 4g, the hardware is the same. After all, 10+ devs are better than 1 or 2 per section. Perhaps a seperate subforum for devs or senior members only to create and test new roms can be created, members test with their own phones and report, and devs can collaborate.
I understand that some junior members may complain about beta bugs and such, but that is why I proposed a restricted area only to those who fully comprehend that a new rom does include bugs.
I know CM7 is such a project, but perhaps we should extend that scope to something beyond that, and utilize the advantage that Samsung has given us by 10 million sales.
Why? Just because they share the same hardware by combining all relevant sections would probably cause some people to flash the wrong ROMS then there would be **** loads more posts saying "I didnt read it right now I have a shiny paperweight"
I thinks its far easier as it is, unless I'm misreading your post
Hence the restriction towards only developers. A lot of knowledge is lost thru diversification. When the area opens it should first, link to a warning
"Flashing the wrong roms WILL lead to a BRICKED device" and an "I Agree" signage.
Developers too need to put appropriate tags in their ROMs so that users can know which ROMs fit which device.
In my view the forum is littered with i bricked my device using xxx rom .
Surely those posts should be care of the developer even if a separate sub post for help is required .Combining all versions is only going to add many more help posts to the forum as so many dont read and wont read .
jje
With the dozens of ROMS out there for our device, it would be nice and helpful if a thread was made where people could post an in-depth comparison between these roms and possibly even a ranking system in terms of downloads, review score, user feedback etc. Another possibility is a guide that would help them choose the best ROM for them.
I've been on my custom rom ever since but that decision came after hours and hours of research and reading the threads of the other ROM chefs and visiting other websites as well. It would be really helpful to the newer members who would like to modify their phones to have a dedicated review thread/area where everything is there to read.
I know this sounds lazy but it would save hundreds of research hours and make choosing the right rom suited for each individual faster and easier.
I could do it if I had the proper experience and knowledge, but sadly, I am but a noob.
I'm just throwing ideas around and see if this is a good idea. Anyone interested in this? The community will be in gratitude if this becomes a reality
i think i posted in the wrong subforum? uhmm... sorry mods. Please move if inappropriate.
I don't think this is such a good idea, to be honest
First, it might be cause for some rather immature users to go about saying this or that is the best or this is better than that in so and so ROM etc. It's hard to find people who can give good reviews because no matter what, there's always that bias and sense of loyalty. Even comparative reviews may be hard to come by because I don't think a lot of people use a particular ROM for a long enough period of time before jumping to try another one (or they just try one, and stick to that one for whatever reason..be it because they're satisfied already, or aren't the type to want to try everything out) then once they settle on one they like, they can't really say much in terms of comparison about others they've tried before since ROMs constantly get updated. Like I may have stopped using a particular ROM because of bugs and such and move on to something else but who knows, those bugs could've been addressed already by then etc.
The thing of it is, someone will always have a different user experience from someone else. And it really depends on the person's usage of the phone. And it's really upto the user to do his/her own research. Because if we just have a thread where people will just look for whatever has the most reviews then they're just gonna jump right in to flash it perhaps without further in depth reading.. We already have a thread which is a constantly updated index of the ROMs already available. People can just start off from there, check out whatever seems appealing based on the description and jump to that thread for some further reading or ask their questions there. Opening up a thread like this might further fragment support around here. People might start asking questions on that thread, submit their complaints, ask for help, report problems etc. Even if you tell people to not do those things in that thread..well not everyone likes reading through all of the first post.
And unfortunately, not everyone is accustomed to use the ever helpful search box so they end up posting questions that already have been answered over and over again. And instead of checking out the step by step guides, they have people walk them through the process. Some people are so in a hurry to jump into custom ROMs that they end up making mistakes and bricking their phone. Some..how you say..rude users even go so far as to blame the ROM maker or the beta testers for not doing a good job because they have this or that freak bug they happen to get.
Not that I'm against helping people, especially newbies (I'm a helper on Doc's thread) but I think it would be a benefit to people especially new users to do some of their own research and discover things on their own. The respective threads of the ROMs provide more than enough information, reviews, complaints, help, guides etc.
People won't ever learn if they're spoon fed information and such all the time. I'm all for trying to make the whole experience easier for any kind of user, but I'm also all for people to do some of their own work and learn on their own. It's not just a matter of trying to save people time, it's a matter of letting people get the best user experience for them. It's not a matter of lessening the amount of people asking for help, but it's a matter of wanting them to learn.
Sometimes saving people time and effort isn't the best idea if it just gives them problems later they can't figure out on their own.
Sorry for the lengthy reply. Just my 100 pesos. Lol.
I don't mean any offense or whatever to anyone, okay? I love helping people when I have time and I just think helping people help themselves is the best. You know like..give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime..that kinda stuff.
I hope my post came off as logical and with all due respect.

Fair enough. Well said kabayan! Initially, i thought that this was a good idea. Looking at things now, it's not so attractive after all. haha. Salamat!
MODS: Kindly requesting the closure and deletion of this thread please. Thanks!
@anoneemooz,
Just a hypothetical question, if it happens that Samsung release a froyo rom (2.2 only) and it comes with your native language locale with Swype as well would you still be in the latest rom, or would you stick to the rom with those features?
Not trying to flame, but would like an honest opinion about this.

Not a flame at all haha!
Well, I'm pretty used to everything being in English and I'd prefer it actually. It's a major language in the Philippines. It's my first language too so I wouldn't switch. Maybe I'd install the Swype with Filipino, but I might rarely use it since I usually stick to English or Chinese except for the occasional Filipino words which I can just type out if need be.
As for the phone's locale..I'm happy with United States or France so I'd stick to custom ROMs probably for forever. 2.2.1 ROMs have been awesome and knowing our awesome devs around here...2.3 will be even better~

As English language is a working language in India, most of the users would prefer a phone with English as default. There would be some who use Hindi also. But they wouldn't miss Hindi on their phone.
Instead of spamming the development thread of CM13 you can spam here in this discussion thread as much as you want.
it's a shame this thread is even needed. I've been on XDA for a number of years... I've seen my share of elitism and ignorance but i'm ashamed to see this section of the forums so overrun with a nasty combination of both. What happened to the days of someone saying something stupid and we just simply ignoring them? Heck if you want to be a jerk, at least be clever. Asking about fingerprint sensor? Quote all the times someone has asked and had it answered - to me, that's a more poignant than berating them.
Remember the old internet mantra my friends - fighting on the internet is like running blah blah.
Welcome to 2016
people here are keep posting pretty useless posts even now at SantoshM's thread ,I request them not to post anything there till he releases the ROM.
I think all the fightings are because ppl are anxious to get cm13 already and nothing else.
This is a great device but I have it for almost 2 months already and never used it cause I can't stand anything but cm13..
Just my 2 cents
think you are wrong. fights are generally between "senior members & know it alls" provoked by dumb questions and their different views on how to handle said questions/requests. you dont see noobies fighting, however they tend to cause fights. ppl will say beginners ask q's due to ignorance. i'd disagree. its just laziness. info is there, you just need to read. and bout those "fights", some ppl think they are obligated to respond/feel superior by doing so while some just dont like crap fillin up a dev thread, and they are right. it's a dev thread. silly comments, requests etc should go here, and this thread imo was long due.
btw, anyone knows if Santhosh updated his fixes?
Until now he didn't update his fixes, there's no news on his twitter account and no news in his cm13 thread here on XDA, so we've to be patient and give him some time.
The problem is that there will be always people asking for etas for simple things that are mentioned in the op, putting pressure to the dev etc. Etc. Etc. I don't understand what's wrong with the people today or here in this device forum. I have also been a while on XDA now. Here my question to all this people mentioned above: can't you read ?, there aren't so many categories without a reason. If you have a general question then ask it in the q&a. If it is some general stuff write it down in the general section. And if its to development, bug reporting, enhancement ideas etc. Then the correct section is android development. And now have a good day, evening, night .....

I think the most disputable matter for kenzo is because of "RIL" which is very rare among other CM devices and ordinary people may not aware what "RIL" refer to when they just look at the post !
when people are asking about "is this thing working?" "is that thing working?", kindly donot reply to them, ignore them. Bugs are clearly mentioned in the main post, and still they are asking same thing like a thousand times...specially "does fingerprint work?" :/
Hahaha this is starting to sound funny
One who is ever learning
Lol, Mods closed the CM13 thread.
Those users really need some Anger Management.
I've seen devs leaving XDA because of such annoying people. These people will never learn to behave appropriately. It makes me really angry because there's nothing I can do against these people.
Tried 20160521 build.
- Calls work great
- Data works but only have options for 2G and 3G. Not 4G LTE?
- Super SU installed I can't seem to get ROOT to work, without super SU the CM13 root works
- Camera works fine.
- My phone seems to think its 100% and has charging icon when its not plugged in so it seems battery reading is not working properly.
Great work Santhosh!
I cant download using chrome or IDM, can anyone mirror it?
http://www.androiddevs.net/downloads/
Click on CM13, then on the green "begin download" button and then select a server, that's all, tried it with 3 browsers (UC, Firefox and Aosp Browser) without any problem
My sim card is not being detected. Any idea what might be wrong?
Correction: SIm card only works if i use SIM slot 2.
Nevermind, fixed it.
Sim card issues are still there. Sim works consistently in slot 2.
For using sim in just slot 1, I had to put a sim in both the slots and then remove one of them.
????
How long does it take you all to charge your phone? Is quickcharge working?
Ampere app is showing max 1080mA charging. On MIUI it gave me around 1800mA.
Is it just me or does everyone else think the mods are being way more hurtful than helpful with the way they are monitoring the threads here. I haven't ever seen a group of mods close threads and clean threads so much or so randomly in my life.

Ah NO, they are not. They are doing their job and are clearing out the junk. Actually, I would like them to be more aggressive in their cleaning of the useless posts. For example the one that type I am pressing F5 till root hits. Really what does that have to do with obtaining root? Nothing and when the Mods delete those type of posts they do all of us a favor.
This is a forum. Expecting people to discuss things and not go off on tangents is like expecting a fat guy and an all you can eat buffet to only eat one french fry.
If you have to constantly close threads and clean them there are two problems:
1. You are not removing trouble posters that use personal attacks and act like asses
2. Your expectations for how much control you should expect on a forum is out of whack
I think both of those are the problems, not any actual discussion. This site is a far cry from what it used to be.
Moderators are trained on how to do their jobs. But what you don't know, is most of that is up to them to use their best judgement. Please try to remember, moderators do not see every single post being made. We rely strongly on the members to point us to trouble. From there, it's up to the individual moderator to handle things the best way they see fit.
I encourage everyone to report anything they feel is a violation of our rules or contact me directly. My PM inbox is always open for any concerns. This goes for just about any moderator or administrator of xda. We are here to help, not be forum police. You also don't always see all sides to the story. If it seems one thread is getting a lot of attention, then there's most likely a problem there.
Hope this helps,

I think it's overall quite balanced. They actually show some patience when some threads are getting out of topic, they could even more swiftly without it being shocking (There are really some threads getting completely messed up and they do a great job cleaning them up). I have seen much more arguable behaviors a few years go.
I just feel that a thread being cleaned should only be at the request of the OP period. And moderators need to use logic instead of their best judgement. Sometimes going off on a tangent is exactly what needs to happen for a developer to get an idea. All of a sudden someone is talking about Verizon FiOS and then fiber comes I to talks, from fiber the dev thinks of the food he eats, from there he remembers he had an idea at breakfast. I just feel that with the s8(+) forums specifically there are a few moderators who have gone full on post police for no reason. They have deleted nearly as much helpful information as hurtful.

A lot of the time we do clean up at the request of the OP. You might be surprised about the cleaning we have done and who reported the issue. And we do use our logic. My logic might be different to your logic, and that is where our judgement comes in. We are using our judgement or common sense to try to keep the forums tidy and welcoming . But if someone other than the OP reports abuse or spamming(or any posts that are against XDA rules), we shouldn't clean those posts?
People going off on tangents is not something we generally worry too much about, but again, a lot of times the OP will report it and request we remove those posts. The other thing is, people read those threads to get whatever information they are seeking. Not everyone wants to read through pages of posts that have no relation to the subject of the thread. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who agree and disagree with that. But that is our problem, we will never keep everyone happy.
You're welcome to your opinion, but our goal as moderators is to tread the fine line between letting everyone have their say and enforcing the rules that we all agreed to when we joined.

I can respect that. Maybe there needs to be a double moderator system or something, where not just one moderator cleans it, but 2 or more working together. Would need more mods, but would likely result in more accurate cleaning?

I've been op of some big threads in the past and commend the work the mods do to clean up the threads over and over. It's not an easy job to keep up with.
I personally appreciate the effort moderators are putting here and the time they spend clearing out the junk. Every report I send is dealt with quickly.
It's not about them being "forum police"... but some sort of order has to be in place since threads get derailed, spammed and completely swamped with random discussions from time to time. A forum with no control is a mess.
TL : DR; To any mod reading this, thank you. You're doing great.

To be honest, if we felt that was needed, that would be like us saying we don't trust our moderators to operate independently.
But we do. 100%. Every one of them. The current "cleaning" is more than accurate enough in our eyes.
I think noppy's response gave a good explanation of why things are done the way they are.
But if you think mods are being too heavy handed or excessive, then by all means, let us know (via private medium, not in the public forum). Provide some examples, and we will look into them. We take all feedback and complaints very seriously.
But from what you've been describing here, it seems this is more a matter of personal opinion than cold, hard over moderation.
It's difficult for those not on the moderation team to grasp just how many reports we deal with on a daily basis. (bearing in mind we have over 8 million members). Reports that get submitted by users like yourself, using the Report Post button. You'll actually find that most actions that a moderator takes on a thread are because of a report, not because of something they are doing off their own back.

Ok, you have a point on helping, and agree sometimes a blind squirrel sometimes finds the nut. However, if you look at 99.9999% of the posts they have zero to do with the subject at hand. Again, I use my example of the multiple "I am pressing F5 till root drops". Honestly, what does that have to do with the root discussion? Nothing, so deleting them is the best thing. Also to your point, how many times does thread have to have the announcement somebody found the way to root snapdragon Galaxy S8+ by using dirtycow (which does not work by the way, but did not stop 500 people from posting they found root)? And to come full circle, the mods do not delete useful content, it is just there are some many folks with zero skill thinking their input has value when it doesn't. To thank a person hit the thanks button or donate to them. Don't waste a post on thanking them. Again to my example, no I and the other 7 billion humans that live on planet Earth do not care that you are hitting the f5 button till root drops, so don't waste a post saying so, and to the fool that bumped that post, stop. In closing, the mods in my opinion don't clean the threads enough, just because the plethora of useless posts that occur in a very short amount of time. For them to keep up it would require them to have no life, no family, no job......
It's every day bro.... "Jake Paul Voice"
I almost never have issue with a mod. I have seen a lot of cleaning and closing on the S8/+ root threads, but I show up after the fact. So I can't say whether or not if they were being excessive. I think they are doing about as well as you could expect a human to.

No i think they should actually be far more agressive in some ways
There are WAY too many lazy, entitled no search/ no read idiots in here now than 5 years ago when i got here.
Back then you were expected to attempt to help your self first...exhaust all options then ask a question or ask for help.
This new generation of lazy users make it miserable for those of us that are not lazy, always read the OP and always search before asking stupid/repeat questions.
I know the mods have been told to be show more leniency then in previous years but i think that is not the way to go.
And god forbid you actually tell someone directly they are lazy or quote the rules to them...then you end up with an infraction. In real life i dont hold my tongue or tolerate lazy people .i shouldnt have to on a web forum... telling the truth (in a reasonably respectful way) is a good thing last time i checked.
Its sickening honestly.
I miss the old days...
That said the mods have an almost impossible task in front of them. I respect and appreciate every single one of them...even the one who gave me infractions lol.

Now that root is released, I feel like the mod team will have many more reports to deal with, tons more off topic posts and clutter, the stepped up response is called for in my insight. You've done an outstanding job, and I don't think I need to tell you that guys. Thank you.
Xda always been full of Snitches and nazi mods

Ah NO, they are not. They are doing their job and are clearing out the junk. Actually, I would like them to be more aggressive in their cleaning of the useless posts. For example the one that type I am pressing F5 till root hits. Really what does that have to do with obtaining root? Nothing and when the Mods delete those type of posts they do all of us a favor.

Doing their job is all they need to do and not whine about it and close threads. Their job is not to try to get ppl from making useless posts, they are not teachers or guides. Their job is to clean and moderate. Likely done better by sentient programs or trained gibbons. Open the progress threads and moderate Instead of holding the threat of closing threads over users heads like petulent bullies. They need to check their egos and just execute the functions of their job title. Now this may mean actually doing more work, spending more time doing moderator things....and that's the rub isn't it. They do not want to be bothered with moderating, they just want the ego boost they think the title entitles them to.

Is it just me or does everyone else think the mods are being way more hurtful than helpful with the way they are monitoring the threads here. I haven't ever seen a group of mods close threads and clean threads so much or so randomly in my life.

Just wondering: what has this post to do with the Samsung Galaxy S8+?
Is there no other part of the forum to discuss this?

so I would say the OP is talking about "here" the s8+ forum....
Hi, I'm looking to try a new stable rom for daily driver.
Revenge is CAF so supposed to be best for Snapdragon like note 3.
But Evolution X looks great and fast too.
Has anyone compared the two eg for battery life, general functionality, gaming etc with Galaxy note 3?
If so any thoughts or opinions?
I'm also tempted by the latest havoc to try out Android 10 based room but assume this would be less stable?
Only got one phone so difficult to keep changing it up to test myself.
Thanks!

Standard? Miserable and unhelpful more like. I'm simply asking if anyone has already done this and has any opinions as it would be very helpful to me and save a lot of time/hassle/stress for me with my only phone (which I already explained in OP).
I'm very time poor/high stress at the moment.
Hopefully some more friendly folk will be along soon to share their experience and put your crap attitude to shame.
As I also already said in my OP if I have to try myself I will but no harm in asking surely?

I gotta be honest, you were given a pretty acceptable answer. I don't see why you call it a crap attitude. If anything you were given a good tip about doing a back-up. Since you're a jr memeber he's actually being nice to remind you of that. It's pretty common for new memebers to forget a back-up and then shortly afterwards something goes wrong and said new memeber has a help me thread open.
I get that you want some opinions and you may get some, you may not. But really his advice is the best. Try it out and see and make up your own mind. It's such a subjective thing that what one person likes may not suit someone else at all.
Best of luck.
If you say so, I'm sorry to say I remain unconvinced.
I took it as an F.U. ...but then the written word can be deceptive out of context so if it was genuinely meant to be a friendly and helpful reply then I sincerely apologise.
For my part as a noob in this field I have a great respect for the knowledge and experience in these forums and the amazing work that is done here.
I get that it can test people's patience when questions seem "obvious" or you get yet another "what is best ROM" question but I was simply wondering if people (hopefully people more experienced and knowledgeable than I am so that I can learn something) had already trodden this path and had any opinions which may be helpful or insightful.
With any luck they will be along soon to offer some!
