Hey guys, I just wanted to see if anyone else is having a longer waiting period with the Rogers 3G network lately or if it is just me. I've been noticing that my phone has slowed down quite a bit when browsing the internet or using an application that requires data on the 3G network. My wi-fi is fine, just the 3G. It takes between 45 secs to 1 minute to retreive the information. I had called Rogers and asked them to reset or refresh or whatever they do down there, but didn't seem to help.
Now if it is just my phone, maybe it is some application that is using up the processor or data, but I don't have that many applications running in the background other than weatherbug that constantly uses data.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
What happens if you run a speedtest? the app by Xtremelabs is good.
no issue here. i use mine on a daily basis between pickering and mississauga, and as long as i have at least 2 bars of signal strength my magic is very fast over 3g
Thanks guys for the quick response. I think I found the problem. I had called Rogers support again and they said that it is due to my sim card being a 2G one. I need to replace it with a 3G. Hopefully that will fix the problem.
Thanks
I too have been having internet/email issues since last Thursday using my Treo 750. The symbol toggles between 3G and H and usually does nothing but comes back with an error message saying something like 'cannot find this page...'. I travel between Oakville and Concord every day with the same issues. The phone worked perfectly in Brantford last night...so I don't think it's a hardware issue. The tech support guy grabbed a treo and tried and was able to connect on EDGE....not 3G.
I tried my sim card in my sons Motorola Risr and it works perfectly....on EDGE. They tech support guy said they were having issues with 3G last Thurs/Friday, so I'm wondering if whatever they did last week is affecting some older phone models (I've had mine for 1 1/2 years now). Not sure if I can (or if I want to) configure my treo to connect via EDGE instead of 3G...
Anyone having the same problem?
Very odd indeed. I got my new sim card but still doesn't fix my problem. At least I'm not the only one experiencing the same problem. As far as I know, the 3G and H symbol are he same thing according to rogers tech guy, correct me if I am wrong. I'm going to call again today to see if I come up with anything.
Just got off the phone with Tech Support again. They are sending me a new Sim Card, but from the sounds of it, that's probably not going to fix the problem. He WAS going to do a free hardware swap until he discovered the phone is out of warranty. Then it was basically "oh gee, three year contract, one year warranty...tough luck".
Yep, the G and H are the same thing. Since mine is switching back and forth, he said the phone is hunting for a signal.
When I asked why the phone worked perfectly in another city he couldn't give me a good answer. I have to go back to Brantford tonight, so I'll get a chance to repeat the experiment.
Listen folks. It has nothing to do with your SIM card, nor your phone. The reps at rogers, I for one, ASSUME it could be the sim card, but really, most of the reps cannot differentiate an incompatible SIM with a compatible one, so they send you out a new one anyways, just to get you off the phone because they really don't know what the cause is and they have no hands on the status of the networks and network problems other than what is posted in library by the actual IT department, which do not directly communicate with the centers.
To sum it up. Rogers 3G network is garbage! and that DNS issue is not isolated to the metro area, it's here too in Newfoundland. DNS resolution is extremely slow, even with OpenDNS, which means it's their switches that are garbage and most likely being bogged down. Rogers thinks they had solved the problem by throttling the 3G bandwidth to ~3Mbit and the upstream to less than 150K, (My assumption), however, that isn't working.
From my guess is that the request is sent to Rogers networks, which cache that request then caches the pages and sends it to your device, making it appear you have a fast connection.
Anyways, sometimes I find the EDGE network a lot faster..especially in the DNS resolution area.
"It has nothing to do with your SIM card, nor your phone"
My feeling exactly. It just seems a little too coincidental that everything was just fine until they had a network "issue" late last week.
So, being a mechanical guy with very little knowledge of how a these things actually work, is there a way for me force the treo750 to use the EDGE network?
Never mind, I got a hold of a guy at Rogers who seemed to know his stuff. He told me to get the latest OS from Palm and then how to go in and set it up for EDGE. We'll see how that works.

I love ripping on Rogers for being crap, they are, but the network is downtown Toronto is far from crap. And it is not throttled. I have had repeated speedtests reach 3900kb/s with the average around 3100kb/s. Thats not too bad considering the crap they put up with in the states on AT&T.

True, compared to the 3G in the U.S I would agree that Rogers has an edge, 3G here in Newfoundland is still in it's infancy, well still is everywhere. We just got 3G last winter I believe.
what newfoundland has 3G?
now hell really has frozen over (ha)
Im from dildo bay
I recently unlocked my G1 to work with the ICE Network here in Costa Rica.
I was actually stuck for like 3 hours thinking about flashing and trying differen methods for the activation because for some reason it wouldn't catch the 2G Data Services (After I Followed alot of APN Settings etc)
When I was about to give up , I saw what seemed like a new icon (which ended up being that it was receiving data)
But I also noticed the R in the signal strenght icon, which I managed to figure out was Roaming.
This has not gone off since I got the phone, I got Donut 1.6 , I got the phone yesterday, It works perfectly, It receives calls, Dials, Msgs fine, everything like my old S.E phone, the internet is even a tad faster, but I'm kinda worried about the Roaming sign being there.
I'm not really worried for any International SMS like it was reported, because the crappy service here doesn't even have that, so It won't happen, and I don't even think Roaming exists here.
Any help to that?

You might want to post your APN settings so others can see if you need to change something.

Out of noobing around, I tried to play with the APN settings, but I went back to the old ones, now my Internet doesn't work..
http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Carrier_APN_Settings#ICE_.28Costa_Rica.29
Thats the only thing I saw. Saw a couple other places that had the same info. If that don't work then maybe someone else can help you thru.
This isn't an APN problem, it is a SIM problem.
Your provider has one set of numbers on your card, and another set of numbers that actually identify the network, and they don't match. Technically, from the phone's point of view, you *are* roaming, even if it is the same provider. From the provider's point of view, you *aren't* roaming.
Up until cupcake, we had that same problem here in Canada when using the "Fido" network (which is owned and operated by "Rogers"). The network identified itself as "Rogers", the SIM cards identify themselves as "Fido", the phone think's its roaming.
So; you don't need to worry about roaming charges when you are actually connected to the correct network.
BUT; You don't have an easy to read display to tell you when you are *really* roaming, nor can you make configurations that are based on whether you are or are not roaming.
Edit: You might be inclined to report it as a bug against AOSP. Even though it technically isn't a bug, the workaround for it needs to be input and that needs to originate as a bug report. http://source.android.com/report-bugs

Thank You very much.
I actually wasn't really worrying a whole lot, because Roaming doesn't exist here in Costa Rica. ( We are expected to barely get 3G this year, and there is a wait list for that for about 200,000 people ).. If your signal goes out, thats it, you got no signal .
thanks for the quick reply, another thing I wanted to ask. I've had the phone since like Sunday, and When I got it it was Version 1.01, So I got 1.5 Cup Cake, and eventually 1.6 Donut without even trying the phone at any point, I'm getting alot of force close msgs, for something regarding android action or something like that, I don't recall the exact msg, but I keep getting it , when going to the home from a application (any) or doing something rly fast, it blacks out, resets the desktop and shows up again, I read somewhere you had to do a factory reset (which bugs me because for some reason mY internet wasn't working until like 5 hours after I unlocked the phone).. Thanks

edit: android.process.acore
Yeah, a factory reset might help. Especially when you've done that many updates over a short period of time.
Write down your APN settings on a piece of paper and do the factory reset. It will STILL have 1.6, it will just clear the user data, which after just one day, won't be much anyways. Better to get it cleaned up now rather than wait until you have a big pile of configurations you don't want to lose.
Thanks, Did that, now my G1 Is much faster and won't crash.. Awesome
I've had it with this piece of ****. I'm on my 3rd Slide and STILL have "Generic Network Failure"s when trying to send or receive MMS, get "Unable to send message, retrying" with 3 god damn bars of service when trying to send an SMS sometimes, lose my E and 3G data connection all the time even though T-Mo says I should get a good 3G connection. So, what is something comparable to this? Has to be Android. T-Mo wants to send me a Blackberry something or other, and I have no interest at all in that.
There gonna try to send you something comparable. What they think is comparable is whether or not you have a keyboard or not, not what OS your current phone has. If you complain enough you may be able to get a Vibrant but odds are against you. Threaten to leave and that may help.
Firsr and most importantly have you tried setting the phone to 3G only? Also Making sure you have the correct data plan (its slide specific not android..stupid tmo) and making sure no app or anything is messing with apns?

Que? There are different data plans? Yea, I've tried setting it to 3g only. The problem with that is I barely get a signal in my house. All the APNs are what they should be, none of those settings has changed. The odd part is on each of the phones, I have had my apps installed on day one, and the thing works fine for a couple of weeks, then I start having these problems out of the blue.
i started having issues a few weeks ago in my area, i had awesome data speeds when i connected, but 9/10 times i would get half of the page loaded and then it would hang which meant resetting my data connection or rebooting the phone or any number of other fixes. i have the advantage of working at a t-mo store and was able to pull up the map of my area and see that they were working on my tower at home and as of a few days ago my connection is 6-7mbps down and solid as hell, i used to go to bread co to use wifi but tethering is faster now(and more convenient, and i don't have to worry about a firewall)
did you try a new simcard?

yes theres a slide specific data package. Im sure you have it if it works for the most part but yea the android data package will not work supposedly. and of course theres the sidekick package blackberry etc
The slide package is 5 dollars more. I was originally signed up for it but I called in and got it switched. The dataplan works fine, I wish I could say as much for the phone. My third replacement will be here this week...
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
My 4th replacement is in the mail right now. Tmobile offered me a blackberry 9700 to replace it, obviously I jumped all over that(insert sarcastic undertones).
I'm gonna wait for the HSPA+ phones to come out and maybe I can talk them into giving me one at full upgrade price, I would take the Vibrant, but I can't stand that phone. It only takes a few warranty exchanges and finding the right rep, and you can get whatever you want from tmobile.
Disclaimer at the bottom of the post... *
Updated for ICS / Ice Cream Sandwich - tentative settings, please confirm if these work for you. (Look for additional red text.)
Thank you to everyone who took the time to figure all this stuff out! All I did was take some pretty screenshots to make it easier for beginners.
OK, I want to make this short, simple, and thorough. I don't think those things are mutually exclusive.
First, you need an activated Straight Talk SIM card that can be transferred to other phones. **
Put the SIM into your Note, turn it on, and open the system settings. Then tap the following...
Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
The next screen should look something like the attached image #1: "APNs". Tap the Menu button and tap the New APN button. ***
You need to create two APNs. The name you enter in the Name field apparently doesn't matter. I just used "Internet" and "MMS" to avoid confusion. Copy the settings in the two attached image numbers 2: "APN_1" and image number 3: "APN_2". I drew a yellow check mark next to all the entries that I needed to change, I suppose some firmware versions/ROMs/phones may be different. When you're done entering in all the required addresses and stuff, tap the Menu button and tap the Save button.
APN 1...
Name: Internet
APN: att.mvno
The method for setting the "APN type" varies. Choose "internet" if you are given a list of choices, type "default" if you must type it in.
APN type: internet
APN type: default
Typing "default" seems to work on imilka's AOSP ICS v03 ROM for the internet at least, I haven't tried MMS yet. I suspect it will work with other ICS builds as well.
APN 2...
Name: MMS
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
APN type: mms
When you save the second APN and you return to the APNs screen: select the radio button on the first APN (see attached image number 4: "Select_APN").
Tap the Back button to return to the Manage network settings screen. Put a check mark into the Use packet data option (see attached image number 5: "Check_use_packet_data"). Shortly after checking that box my phone connected to the network.
Yay you're done! This worked on my phone, I hope it works for y'all too.
* This is for informational purposes only. I am not an expert. Frankly, I don't even know what these settings really do. I simply copied them from other places on the internet (like this thread). There is an app, APN Backup & Restore, that can be used to (gasp!) backup and restore your APN settings, if you're nervous about doing this I suggest you backup your current APN settings before proceeding. It looks like there are other APN settings apps, it's possible one of them is better... I dunno. Personally, I did not use any APN-centric app, though I did have a backup of my whole phone made by Clockwork Mod ROM Manager
** I am no expert, but people on the internet say the only way to get a transferable SIM is to buy a Nokia E71 or a Nokia 6790 from Straight Talk. Check out straighttalk.com, they might be selling a refurbished E71 or 6790 (currently the refurbished 6790 is ~$50 with free overnight shipping). Personally, I left the SIM in my Nokia until the service was activated. I saw someone on the net say that you should switch the SIM back to the Straight Talk phone before calling tech support. I don't know if this is really something you have to do or not. Personally, I'm going to keep the phone around and use it whenever I have to call them.
*** If your screen shows some APNs already I'm afraid I don't know what you should do. I suggest you stop using my guide and see if you can get some expert advice elsewhere. I'm sorry about that!
Nice write-up! I am on ST as well.
A tip for getting a refurbished e71 to show up in the phone options is by starting the process with a zipcode nearish to where you live that is more densely populated, and then just changing the address when you are placing the order. Save some bucks that way.
Also, I believe that the E71 provided by ST is locked to the SIM included with it and will not work with other SIM cards. It is probably best to just hang onto the handset.
I have tried with Fast Dormancy (*#*#9900#*#*) both enabled and disabled and get the same speeds either way (2-3Mbps), so I just leave it disabled since it seems that it could drain the battery more if left enabled.
Thanks!
I forgot I'd seen Fast Dormancy mentioned on the other threads... I'm going to try it with it disabled for a while as well.
... later
Hmmm... disabling it seems to have started causing problems immediately. I connected to the Market and searched for a speed test app. It worked for a little bit, but by the time I had typed "speedtest" into the search bar my internet connection apparently got lost. I tried turning it back on and the internet connection seemed to return.
I am just curious, what sort of speed you getting with the Straight Talk.
I have the go-phone plan and getting these speed :
btw, i have the Fast Dormancy disabled and it work great!

I have the 500MB data package for $25 with monthly roll over. I guess any data plan can get my speed with go-phone.
Argh, I wrote out a response but then, being absent-minded, I decided to click a link and lost it. Here's a pic with five speed tests I did. The results are inconsistent, but it doesn't look like they're being throttled or anything to me.
Note the second one on the list. Extremes in both directions. It says 33 kbps upload speed, but I though it hung so I attempted to cancel the test early. I'm not sure if it actually finished, timed out, or if I successfully canceled it.
I'm also using my note with this setup. The only difference I did is that instead of making two separate APN types I just combined everything into one and set the APN type to Internet + MMS. Works fine for me.
Thank you thank you thank you for this.
Going to use my note on Straighttalk also.
Have been using my note on straight talk since day 1, have had a couple days of going 100+mbs of data in a day without any issues
Just like to let you guys know, don't think the grass is greener if you have a tiered data plan on ATT
I have a 2g data plan and out of 142 speed tests mostly at two different locations a mile apart I have had exactly 25 times where my speed was over 1mbps download and the majority of those were at 2am or later when there's nobody on the network. I even called them to ask if they had throttled me because my speeds were so low (I'm in the Melbourne area of Florida btw) and they said no....we just suck...ok they didn't say we just suck but after looking into it I was told yea well in the daytime there's a lot of people on the network which slows things down...Yea really? to below 1 mbps???
So if you're thinking you're missing out on something you're not...that is not until your area gets LTE theeeeeeen you'll be missing out on what is nothing short of phenomenal speed. In the meantime...save ur dough til it's in your area. I'll be going to ST or Go Phone until then myself. It's the principal of the thing too. Why should I pay top dollar for that kind of crappy speed when someone in the city is getting 49mbps dl speed on the same plan I got? While being restricted to 2Gb no less.

wow this is on straight talk? I live in downtown seattle and was testing their network and it was like 1.5 down....
If their 3g (hspa+) speeds are the same as straight talk, there isn't any reason to get into an expensive contract.
Can anyone else post their straight talk speeds?
Straight Talk lets you buy just the sim card now so you can save $50 and skip the phone purchase.
great! is there any issues with using strait talk on the note aside from not having 4g speeds? and when do they start throttling your bandwidth? i really would rather transfer my number from tmobile and get a st sim than have to deal with edge speeds on tmobile.
So this is faster than t-mobile right? If so I'm getting it cause I'm on t-mobile now and might as well if its faster and same price
From the Beast : Galaxy Note
sounds like it is faster than normal AT&T HSPA+. From what i've seen, normal AT&T hspa+ speeds are around 1 to 1.5megs..
So if there is no LTE in your city, why have AT&T at all? Buy a phone off contract and pay only $45 a month in cell phone bills..
H+ in my area is around 2-3 during the weekday, and 5-6 meg in the evening.
Is yours not setup correctly to get only 1-2?
I got 4 Down and 2 Up using the settings they sent me with my SIM Only Straight Talk Account.

how is straight talk data service?
i have a question about straight talk's data service. on the internet, it seems like straight talk imposes limitations as to how you can use the data?
are you able to use the internet normally like watching youtube videos etc?
can you tether?
are there things that you cannot do compared to what you can do with other 3g/4g providers?
i ask these questions because i just saw this thread a moment ago, and gave me some hopes to buying an internation version of galaxy note and not have to pay too much money getting a plan with att. (i don't want the att version because of the hardware difference)
I have an ntelos S5 (G900R7). There is no development for this phone anywhere on the internet. Perhaps I can find support here?
---------
So far (you may skip this part):
I have managed to successfully install Spirit Rom with full functionality, by copying my old build.prop into the system directory, and restoring my previous apn settings using the apnsbu. I forget why I left this rom, but I did. Everything I try has some problem! I then proceeded to try just CM11, by itself, and had 3g difficulties. Then, using Kushman's sprint MIUI, (Ntelos shares sprint towers) things seemed to work right, but it remapped my recent app key to menu... (perhaps I can map it back?) and the volume was not controlled by my physical volume buttons.
-----------
Now my favorite rom so far: Mokee Rom It's fast and visually pleasing, but I have wi-fi and phone difficulties.
After imposing my APN settings, I can reproduce these effects:
(1) Before replacing build.prop, the wi-fi works and can be enabled or disabled as I need. Also, 3g works very well at nice speeds, but it says "Verizon Wireless" underneath the 3g indicator bars. However, I cannot make calls. If I attempt to do so, the 3g data stops working, turns orange, and no longer says "3g". If I do this, then no data can be transmitted or received.
(2) After Replacing build.prop with the "good original" copy (which sometimes fixes similar problems in other custom roms) the wi-fi becomes stuck in a constant state of "turning wi-fi on..." but never turns on. 3g still works, but, as in part (1), it will break if I try to make a call.'' Also, in this case it says "Sprint" instead of "Verizon Wireless"
Does any one have advice, or perhaps some build.prop settings to modify? Or maybe there's a different file that would help. Again, my phone is the SM G900R7. Has someone else with this phone had luck customizing it?
Thank you
nTelos S5
Likewise have a nTelos S5, have not found any custom roms that can successfully be installed without data or phone issues.
Also trying to install any ASOP roms resulted with all phone efs data getting cleared.
Upon searched relentlessly the only rom I found that functions is located at

its very stock but functions flawlessly for me.
Advise if you have any luck, I will reciprocate.

My advice is to you, is that if you install Mokee rom, do not update it with OTA update. This is what I think broke the network for me. Even after restoring my phone to factory conditions and using Kies, I still had no network. I ended up going to the nTelos store, where they had to reset the network service for my phone on their end... strange.
Anyway, I have made a few roms work, and I suspect I could make more. If you maintain your apn settings, and build.prop, you should be able to make Spirit rom work. The same thing is true for Miui. However, if I remember from my experience correctly, if you do install Miui, then I THINK you should not restore your original build.prop; it may work without it... just restore the apn settings. When you do this, you may have to change the preferred network mode... I am a little freaked out, after my previous experience with Mokee rom, to mess with this any longer, though. I do have a problem with Spirit rom: if I use the Timely alarm clock, the time panel is miscolored, but I believe that could possibly? be fixed by flashing a different kernel. I plan on flashing Spirit tonight.... stock uses up my battery too fast, and Spirit just feels more responsive.
EDIT: I just re-flashed Spirit Rom, and they fixed the discoloration in the most recent version! Also, as before, my 3g and WiFi work fine.
Took me days...
The CSpire shares the model number and ROM. The US Cellular CM11 is the closest. Somewhere in that I lost my ability to send texts (not sure if it's the SMSC or...) and didn't get it back when I ODIN'd to stock. I would LOVE to have CM support for this model.
I also am in the same boat as you guys. I would love to get another reliable ROM on this phone. I just have bad memories of purchasing my last one (Sprint GS3) from ebay, and having one hell of a time making the MMS work after flashing it for nTelos. However, I never did have to mess with any of the APNs or build.prop settings on that one. I would think the Sprint ROMs should be the closest compatible ROM, being that nTelos and Sprint do share towers in WVa and Va (Sprint actually has zero towers in these states, and leases nTelos towers instead).
Is using EFS Backup by Wanam a good method to insure the EFS does not get screwed up?

You might try saving out your wpa_supplicant file from the stock ROM and replacing it on the flashed ROM. This has worked for me before on my GS3. That might take care of the wifi anyway.
I'm also on ntelos with the s5 now. But it is a us cellular unlocked by them phone. Stuck in a ntelos sim card that I bought from store and everything works. Except 4g. I can live w/o it but it's kinda like a puzzle now. How could I enable this to work on ntelos?
Depending on where you are, ntelos does not have 4G in many places yet. It's still very spotty in West Virginia.
Has anyone taken the OTA Lollipop update? If so, how is it working and does it lock or put in a new bootloader?
I have. It's a little laggy at times, gets really hot when using it while charging and battery drains a little faster. Not sure about the bootloader

I think I will hold off for a while. My stock NK1 is laggy enough as is. Damn, I wish there was a compatible ASOP ROM available for this phone.
Honestly, this Samsung G5 is the absolute worst phone I have ever owned! I would like to get a S6, but my experience has been so bad with this S5, I am almost afraid to stick with Samsung. However, my S3 was awesome!
Just found out that the heart rate sensor is active when the phone is on no matter if S Health is open or not.
I am in the Richmond area on Ntelos. They have stated they have sold their bandwidth to T-Mobile and we are to find another carrier. My phone is not even a year old and no other carrier will activate it. Being I own mine outright and paid close to $600, I am about to lose my mind knowing that I will have a shiny expensive very small tablet in a few months. Has anyone a clue how to change this phone over to GSM or something useful. Verizon refused to even try, though I know when I tried Straight Talk's Verizon Sim it did dial to Verizon's customer service. But Straight Talk nor Verizon would activate it.
Ideas and suggestions welcome.

page plus,i am an ntelos dealer and pageplus dealer i flash phones to and from both companies everyday i am in ruckersville va 12 mile north of charlottesville lemme know if you need help you right its the enitre eastern side of the companyh is gone now to tmobile but you can still activate on frawg..ive done many for customers
Thanks for the info. I am on the frawg side of things now. Their plans were too much when mine ended and I didn't need a phone at the time. Then a few years later, yeah I made my S1 last almost 4 years, I bought the S5 late last year outright. Loved the S1. Made that do everything it just did everything slow at the end.
Anyway, am glad there are options of some sort. Have been reading the reviews of pageplus. What kind of speeds are you getting on it with 4G? Their map shows coverage everywhere which makes me a bit uneasy, as in too good to be true. Is it a simple flash or require editing?
If I can't do something else with the phone, I may try the band opening options. According to the phone specs, it should already have all the Verizon bands but they refuse to activate it due to the meid it seems. I have a feeling this topic may get more viewers as the Ntelos off switch day comes closer.
Google Fit was the culprit for the heart rate sensor staying on. Un-installed it and fixed it
After all this time, has anybody found a ROM that works well on this phone?
can't get data so Internet not working on galaxy s5 unlocked already switched ntelos

My internet is not working but I can get talk and text
In case nobody has seen this, there is a now a CyanogenMod 5.1.1 ROM available now for nTelos. I have been running it for 3 days now and I really like it. Good battery life too. Very stable and very speedy. There are some occasional bluetooth audio stuttering issues, but nothing terrible.
See this thread.

FYI, Cyanogenmod 13.0 (Android 6.0.1) is available for nTelos and C-Spire (and other) devices here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ent/unofficial-cm-12-1-g900r7-inland-t3255191
