Nexus 4 720p/1080p video samples...

I know the device isn't out just yet, but I was wondering if anyone has seen a sample of Nexus 4 camcorder yet? (Front & Back). I rely heavily on my cameras for work & for other reasons & not to bash the G-Nex, but the camera sensor on this device is a little underwhelming to say the least. I heard the camera hardware was based off of the AT&T 8mp Optimus G, but I'm not sure if that's an actual spitting image of what we can expect from the N4.
Any links or input would be greatly appreciated in advanced. Worst case scenario, 10 days isn't too far away!

Thanks sooo much for the quick reply with content. The actually image quality is quite an improvement, but my problem lies with the FPS & the audio to a certain extent. I wasn't expecting perfection, so I'm overall happy with what we have here. I'm sure it'll get better between camera mods & software updates. Thanks again.

The mic makes the video so crap, I tried to record video with my GS2 once upon a time and it was far worse than my old iPhone 4 which had such amazing audio quality. I mean I went to Reading last year and the iPhone 4 was super clear, picked up good bass and sounded great but the GS2 just sounded like I was rubbing a plastic bag over the mic and the bass just killed the mic all together.
So if the audio sucks then there is no point to it shooting video tbh. I just have a separate camera though so it doesn't bother me too much though.

I would love it if someone uploaded the original video file from the phone. Youtube seems to always use an aggressive compression on user uploads, I rarely see good 1080p videos on the site, even from pro cameras.

Make sure to go fullscreen when watching the video and turn your youtube video to 720p HD.

Can anyone help ....
I get HEAVY compression artifacts on the video recordings at 1080p on the nexus 4 itself - even when I upload to the PC. The sound and video is compressed sounding too.

Note 2 Music Video

Hey gus, got something to show you, a tip, and a question, i made a music video last week (Alicia keys/Rihanna cover) and used my note 2 for one angle. I figured why not start using it, i bought alot of batteries for it, i have a 64 gb card, and its 1080 like my other cameras. Obviously, the lens and sensor arent that great but in low light, and if its on a tripod, its pretty good, i was even able to add zooming later in the editing. A couple things, first of all, here is the link for a tripod mount that definitely works for the note 2, if you buy any others, make sure they fit first. The whole stabalizer thing is stupid and it doesnt really do anything although i guess it would help you not block the lens or mic, it works great as a tripod mount http://www.amazon.com/Woxom-Slingsho.../dp/B008Q1XQ5Q
Also, does anyone know of any apps that will let you lower the gain of the microphone while taking video? because the mics on really all of these phones are abysmal!! Really if you were able to lower the gain, that would solve the issue, mostly. also, does anyone know if theres a way to get an external microphone working on the phone when taking video? when i plug in my video mic it still records from the internal microphones.
On a side note (no pun intended) i think its kind of cool that it records in stereo with the built in mics... i thought thatextra mic was just for when youre on speaker but it seems like its used for stereo... when did they start doing that with phones?

Shooting a Documentary with a Galaxy Camera

Hello everyone!
I'm Ragnalt, a content creator and lately a documentary / film maker.
I bought the Samsung Galaxy GC100 months ago, because I figured as a novice wanting to get into audio and video production, I could probably get the most bang for my buck with a Camera that was also a phone ( sort of), and that was built on top of android, a very hackable OS (or so I hear).
Well, I've been running on this fantasy for a while and time has come to put it to the test.
I have a small budged for this documentary and I want to get the best audio and video quality. The camera is solid enough on its own, but there are a few things I need it to do for me that the native Android OS does not seem to support (correct me if I'm wrong?).
I need this camera to:
Record audio from an External USB Mic, probably connecter through an OTG cable, similar to or using this app "USB Audio Recorder PRO" . Currently this does not work under native android, because I need to keep it running while I film and once I switch to the camera app, android kills the recording app, or it just goes to sleep for some reason. Developers of the app told me that "backgrounded apps only get 5% cpu time at maximum (or get killed by Android, it depends), so this won't work unfortunately", please tell me there's a way to get around this in a rooted device?.
Manipulare camera light intake and other advanced features during video filming. It is possible while taking pictures, why not with video? (Optional)
Improve my experience of the GC100 in any other awesome ways that I'm not even aware of.
I admit I am a noob at android rooting and hacking, though I am decently savvy in terms of tech and the workings of the interwebs, software and hardware. A jack of all traits if you will, an expert at none. I'm also a very fast learner.
So assuming people actually roam this very esoteric corner of the epic XDA forums, then I look forward to peppering you with questions, reporting on my progress and in general having fun and learning a lot from other Samsung Galaxy content creators and enthusiasts.
I need to:
Figure out if there's a reasonable path to success down this very custom road.
Root my device, and start modifying it until awesomeness can occur.

I use my GC2 to record video at my two sons' band concerts (where audio is really important) all the time. I also use a Panasonic Lumix FZ200 at the same time so later when I'm editing the footage I can switch back and forth to make it look all fancy (haha). Anyway, I use a knock-off Rode style shotgun mic that just plugs right into the headphone port -- works like a charm. I wouldn't even bother with the USB mic solution when the headphone port supports shotgun mics, boom mikes, even wireless lapel mics.
Frankly, I wouldn't root it. This device doesn't have much (in other words, ANY) support from the developer community , so you're pretty much on your own. Because of that rooting really isn't going to get you any new features/options that you don't already have out to the box. FYI, this is coming from someone who has rooted (and usually flashed custom ROMs) on every single other Android device that my family owns (phones, tablets, eReaders, etc.).

Hey I love hearing about people using this great camera in creative and different ways. I love my Galaxy Camera 1. Like internetpilot said though there really isn't much development action going on for the GC 1. But there are plenty of commercial apps that require root that are beneficial to have for any android device. Getting root isn't too difficult. I used Skipsoft's unified android toolkit found here:

As far as your mic issue you should consider using a mic that connects into the headphone jack to record directly with the video. I haven't done it myself but there are a couple of videos on Youtube that show examples of shotgun mics and lapel mics being used with the GC 1. You'd need an adapter for the audio signal like the one found here:

Hey guys, filming is going well. Any suggestions on apps that can give me more control during video rec?
I remember there one was that was very sophisticated, it was neither filmic pro nor FV-5
Tho FV-5 does work for me. Trying to get a copy of filmic pro to test it on my phone but cant find a free copy, even a trial version anywhere. I've emailed them to see.

So, some updates. I've been trying out filming apps and to my surprise, there's very few options.
FV-5 is so far the best, but its got a few bugs (free version), such as not recording audio at times. Big problem, it seems the audio monitor works fine with my microphone setup until I hit record.
It works with a headset fine it seems, but not when I use my usual mic setup which includes a custom cable to connect lapel and hand held mics. These work with the default camera app just fine, with the exception of not being able to be compleitely certain that audio is recording. Aka, doing audio monitoring live.
Which is what FV-5 has but is not working properly, and which is what I'm trying to hunt down.
After that I've tried almost every camera app out there and most are for photography only and not for film. Still have a few options to try, so I'll update then.
Filmic pro seems like the best app out there, but they only officially support cameras with camera2 api and running lollipop.
A soon to be released android version by Filmic pro, will support pre camera2 api phones, but it is currently in beta.
They tell me that if I can get lollipop running on my gc100 then they'll let me test out their beta.
So That's what im aiming for now. I made a post in general to discuss that.

No pictures during video?

Hi Everyone,
I have a 64 gig aluminum Nexus 6p. I'm coming from a note 5 after reading all the reviews about this phone and the improvements in the camera. I was recording video of my daughter today and I've become accustomed to taking pictures while recording video. I dont see that option. It wasn't brought up in any of the reviews that I sawsaw. I thought that it was a basic thing. Is the a Hardware or Software limitation? Can you recommend any apps that I can buy that will allow this if there are any out there?

I'm also wondering about this because it's such a simple, but important feature that my pervious phones had. Anyone?

You will find that it's a software thing built into the samsung camera app.

I just checked and you're right it doesn't allow picture while taking a video. I find this strange since I just checked it with my Nexus 4, 5, 7 and they all allow pictures with video (i knew they did from a long time ago). Even gal nexus does. Strange....

Wished it had this feature......nexus 5 had it why can't this one have it. 2 steps forward 1 step back. Could have used it this weekend during a wedding. Also why cant stock google camera app have recording AND picture buttons on 1 screen rather than switching between the 2.

Agreed this is a basic feature. I am amazed it is not there. I also agree that the video and camera were not separate screens but just one screen in the camera app with 2 buttons.

Any third party camera add this?

Took my phone to a 2 day long concert, here's what I liked

After 12 hours a day and recording almost 100 videos on the highest setting the phone battery never went down past 50% (each day mind you). The phone was starting to get warm about mid way through the day, not sure if it was the sun beating down on my pants (I was in Jacksonville, FL) or due to the constant recording, but it never got extremely hot.
I took some videos zoomed in max at 8x and the quality is honestly not bad. Definitely not HD quality but you can see quite well what you're looking at.
The audio came out better than any other I've seen or heard from others who were with me, two being S7 Edges​, and another an iPhone 7 plus.
The stability when zoomed in 8x was also amazing to me. I could walk around someone who got in the way and it looked like I was barely moving, definitely didn't seem as if I were holding my phone in the air.
The way it picks up light was also better than any other phone I was able to compare with. When the later bands played in the dark I could still see so much detail and wasn't flushed out by either low light or having the stage lights drown out what my camera could see.
Definitely impressed and glad I had this phone with me for this event. Not professional quality but amazing nonetheless, so I figured I'd share with others my experience. I'm willing to answer any questions to anything I may have forgotten to give better details for. I don't really use my YouTube account to upload videos but if need be I could upload a few for those who are curious.

Does the zoom still severely distort the audio?
On the Note 7, audio zoom was enabled by default. It's a good idea, say if you're recording someone talking across the room and when you zoom in it increases the mic gain so you (may) hear them.
Problem is at a gig either on stage or front row with stacks of amps and columns ripping at 120dB and you decide to zoom in the audio distorts horribly. Like makes you want to stab your eyes out with a fork horrible! And there is no way to disable it. The solution is to not use zoom but when recording at 4K using up to 4X optical zoom is generally OK if you re-render your edits at 1080. Fortunately the gigs I did this with I was using a digital recorder and have decent audio tracks to go with the video. Otherwise I'd be screwed. I have not tried recording with mine yet but I may bring it to drum rehearsal and kick things up a bit and zoom in on the kit.

Not too sure about the audio and zoom feature. Didn't even know that existed to be honest. I will say that there are a few I started out with no zoom and I zoomed in during the video but I don't think I really noticed a difference in audio quality. I'm not the pickiest when it comes to stuff like that and none of it is Hollywood material but still impressed nonetheless.

Ok been a while but I finally got to test this and can confirm the audio zoom "feature" is definitely still there! :|
So when recording events such as live venues with loud SPL particularly lower frequencies do NOT use the zoom if at all possible.
Your audio will be very distorted.
Otherwise, it shoots fine.
