Hello everyone!
I'm Ragnalt, a content creator and lately a documentary / film maker.
I bought the Samsung Galaxy GC100 months ago, because I figured as a novice wanting to get into audio and video production, I could probably get the most bang for my buck with a Camera that was also a phone ( sort of), and that was built on top of android, a very hackable OS (or so I hear).
Well, I've been running on this fantasy for a while and time has come to put it to the test.
I have a small budged for this documentary and I want to get the best audio and video quality. The camera is solid enough on its own, but there are a few things I need it to do for me that the native Android OS does not seem to support (correct me if I'm wrong?).
I need this camera to:
Record audio from an External USB Mic, probably connecter through an OTG cable, similar to or using this app "USB Audio Recorder PRO" . Currently this does not work under native android, because I need to keep it running while I film and once I switch to the camera app, android kills the recording app, or it just goes to sleep for some reason. Developers of the app told me that "backgrounded apps only get 5% cpu time at maximum (or get killed by Android, it depends), so this won't work unfortunately", please tell me there's a way to get around this in a rooted device?.
Manipulare camera light intake and other advanced features during video filming. It is possible while taking pictures, why not with video? (Optional)
Improve my experience of the GC100 in any other awesome ways that I'm not even aware of.
I admit I am a noob at android rooting and hacking, though I am decently savvy in terms of tech and the workings of the interwebs, software and hardware. A jack of all traits if you will, an expert at none. I'm also a very fast learner.
So assuming people actually roam this very esoteric corner of the epic XDA forums, then I look forward to peppering you with questions, reporting on my progress and in general having fun and learning a lot from other Samsung Galaxy content creators and enthusiasts.
I need to:
Figure out if there's a reasonable path to success down this very custom road.
Root my device, and start modifying it until awesomeness can occur.
Anyways, If anyone reads this and have any suggestions or questions, please shoot. I look forward to meeting people and making this happen.
Cheers!
Ragnalt
I use my GC2 to record video at my two sons' band concerts (where audio is really important) all the time. I also use a Panasonic Lumix FZ200 at the same time so later when I'm editing the footage I can switch back and forth to make it look all fancy (haha). Anyway, I use a knock-off Rode style shotgun mic that just plugs right into the headphone port -- works like a charm. I wouldn't even bother with the USB mic solution when the headphone port supports shotgun mics, boom mikes, even wireless lapel mics.
Frankly, I wouldn't root it. This device doesn't have much (in other words, ANY) support from the developer community , so you're pretty much on your own. Because of that rooting really isn't going to get you any new features/options that you don't already have out to the box. FYI, this is coming from someone who has rooted (and usually flashed custom ROMs) on every single other Android device that my family owns (phones, tablets, eReaders, etc.).
Hey I love hearing about people using this great camera in creative and different ways. I love my Galaxy Camera 1. Like internetpilot said though there really isn't much development action going on for the GC 1. But there are plenty of commercial apps that require root that are beneficial to have for any android device. Getting root isn't too difficult. I used Skipsoft's unified android toolkit found here:
http://www.skipsoft.net/?page_id=1197
As far as your mic issue you should consider using a mic that connects into the headphone jack to record directly with the video. I haven't done it myself but there are a couple of videos on Youtube that show examples of shotgun mics and lapel mics being used with the GC 1. You'd need an adapter for the audio signal like the one found here:

Hey guys, filming is going well. Any suggestions on apps that can give me more control during video rec?
I remember there one was that was very sophisticated, it was neither filmic pro nor FV-5
Tho FV-5 does work for me. Trying to get a copy of filmic pro to test it on my phone but cant find a free copy, even a trial version anywhere. I've emailed them to see.
Update on testing out apps.
So, some updates. I've been trying out filming apps and to my surprise, there's very few options.
FV-5 is so far the best, but its got a few bugs (free version), such as not recording audio at times. Big problem, it seems the audio monitor works fine with my microphone setup until I hit record.
It works with a headset fine it seems, but not when I use my usual mic setup which includes a custom cable to connect lapel and hand held mics. These work with the default camera app just fine, with the exception of not being able to be compleitely certain that audio is recording. Aka, doing audio monitoring live.
Which is what FV-5 has but is not working properly, and which is what I'm trying to hunt down.
After that I've tried almost every camera app out there and most are for photography only and not for film. Still have a few options to try, so I'll update then.
Filmic pro seems like the best app out there, but they only officially support cameras with camera2 api and running lollipop.
A soon to be released android version by Filmic pro, will support pre camera2 api phones, but it is currently in beta.
They tell me that if I can get lollipop running on my gc100 then they'll let me test out their beta.
So That's what im aiming for now. I made a post in general to discuss that.
Any suggestions for doing audio monitoring while filming?
Thanks!

alright, i'm considering buying a galaxy s after i attended a john mellencamp concert and attempted to record video with my hermes. ... needless to say it didnt work worth a damn.
from what ive seen the SGS hasa great camera. imhoping somebody has tried it during a concert. if so, could someone please provide the video/images?
hell any video/images will work. preferablly 720 though.
thanksbois!
check Youtube
its all the same launch concert mostly, im looking for .. something different? i dont know. the more variety the more i can justify buying one.
how about something non promo or paid by samsung
here check this one out from yesterday's concert
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776975
I did some video recording on a concert a couple of weeks ago - and while the picture quality was decent, well good for me, the audio was screeching bad No wonder though, rock-ish concert after all.
all audio ive heard recorded from the galaxys has been utter hell, what concert was it?
edit: offtopic for houseavatarguy, you live in norway? do you ever come across Urge the pop? we dont have it in the US anymore and its supposed to be still floating around norway lmfao
Many users have reported bad microphone audio on the SGS. It seems to be a software issue, so it may be fixed in a future firmware release, but I wouldn't count on it.
Here's a thread about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=721069
Edit:
And about urge: Yes we still have urge in 0.5 l and 1.5 l (l for litre/liter) bottles, and an energy drink with a different taste on 0.5 l cans.
Read this wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urge_(soft_drink)
is definnitely not a hardware problem, but rather a volume level customization.
right now we have no option to manually adjust the volumen level for the mic
also we do not have option to set the Quality bit rate of the recorded audio
if some one can create a HACK utility to let rooted end users access those controls, then the problem is gone.
here is a link to a video i shot a couple of weeks ago. i am happy with the picture, but the sound is brutal. in all fairness, i did not cover the mic at all as i wasnt even thinking about it being too loud.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8181257/the specials/video-2010-08-28-22-48-29.3gp
i do recall a similar issue with some nokia nseries devices, and a way around it is to plug in the wired headset and let the wired mic record the sound. i am not able to try it at the moment, but can someone can try that and let us know if it works?
well the hondaguy video is encouraging. very encouraging, it handled the random lights pretty darn well id say.
i saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bGX3Ank5hk last night and it .. scared me completely lmfao
i was surprised when i watched the video on my pc. i wish i was able to get more but the slam dancing started and i didnt want to drop it
same crap that they tried to pull with symbian i8910 last year. samsung uses amr to record audio which is good enough only for speech. under pressure from i8910 users they finally gave in and supplied aac but such a low bitrate that it offered only marginally better quality over amr.
why they do this???? licensing. they own amr whereas they dont own aac.
my plan is to build an enclosure inside my hat for it. so i can actually get most of the concert.
Hi everyone,
I've had my Vibrant with me at a local music festival this weekend, and thought it would be a fantastic time to exercise the HD video capture. Unfortunately, every single video I've taken has had such terrible audio that it's unwatchable. I kept digging around in camera settings but found that there's no way to adjust the mic sensitivity. Anyone else have a similar experience or any idea of a workaround?
In my experience the Vibrant's got excellent mic sensitivity and the sound quality is even quite good. Unfortunately, this means that things like concerts are going to be distorted. I've actually seen very few video cameras that can properly record a live concert, much less ANY cell phone.
I absolutely understand that recording a live concert through a microphone designed around voice for telephony is not going to be in any way, shape or form, ideal. I feel like the Vibrant could do better. I just wonder if it's something that could be corrected for in software, if it's a hardware limitation, or if it's just my particular unit. My dad was also with me at the festival, and recorded the same shows using my old Blackberry 9700. The Blackberry did a markedly better job.. It's not what I would call good by any means, but the video isn't intolerable to watch for memory's sake. I just find it frustrating since the phone takes such incredible video. I agree that it does very well in low volume situations, and I absolutely love the phone overall.
I have a couple of comparison example videos on Youtube from the festival but due to my new user status I can't post a link to them. PM me if you're interested.
I also took my phone to a trance festival, the image is amazing but the sound is rubbish. I was also standing very close to the speakers so I don't really blame the mic since it's not really built to handle such a strong volume input.
If there is a possible way to fix it software wise that would be great, but I'm no that optimistic about the chance it's fixable that way.
I agree, the sound just pops... Same song recorded by the og droid was MUCH BETTER... of course my video LOOKED amazing.
I agree my wife and I recently went to the Honda Civic Tour. I used my Vibrant while a friend used one of those little flip HD cameras. We both got the same picture quality however, her sound was amazing. The thing I find funny is those cameras only cost like $249.
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant using the XDA app.
TGA_Gunnman talks about the same thing here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734515
Though doesn't say exactly which one of the settings is what adjusts the mic gain.
I too would be very greatful to know how to turn the thing down.

Hi,
So i recently got a s5 and unfortunately the slow motion feature on the s5 camera is not in the same level of functionality as its compitotors, like the z2 or m8 (and iphone 5s). I wanted the ability to record the video at the higer fps and then edit which part i wanted in slow motion.
The m8 does this, although cuts the sound (which im actually fine with), and the z2 also does this but keeping the sound and slowing it down also.
So my question or request is: Is there a app, mod or the possibility of one, or even a port of the z2 camera recording( i have seen some features of xperia cameras imported, but not this one), that will do this on the s5?
A user here on the forum suggested to me the app reAction, which does have the slow down effect, but it doesn't slow down a lot and not in the speed that i would like.
Thank you!
No one? :/ what i wanted basicly is an app that records 120fps but can also play it back at regular speed or that doesnt process it to slow down and so i can at least do that in the computer (i guess this is more of a question than request). Or maybe a way to do this with the samsung camera app and a mod, because its in the app that the slow down is made after shooting from what i understood.
What i would really like is a port of the z2 camera or to functions like it or even the m8 that lets you edit. the speeds after. Is a port of any of those possible at all?
Same here. I'm looking for that kind of app. Nothing found yet
I actually just found an app today that it kinda does this, but at the same time it doesnt.
Its called kinemaster and its a video editor that lets you edit the speed of the video and select/make cuts on the video and then slow does down. Problem is that it can only do that with videos of 30fps, even if you have a higher fps video it either wont read it or just give you a message that will scale it down to 30fps. The end result isn't bad but its not really the same thing.
Also, the app is free on the play store and they used to have a paid and free version but now switched to free version but with a subscription a month and what that will do is remove the water marker that the app puts on the corner of the video in the free version. So, it kinda does it but at the same time it doesnt.
It would be much better for the end result to just have a app that would either edit or record it with higher fps and then we can edit that file on the phone. Something like the iphone 5s, or even in the android world the m8 and z2 do(z2 even keeps the sound and slows it down also, but if we could get this even without sound would be great).
The one I found, that of course is not same as having the port from Z2 that it's much easier and faster, is AndroidStudio. Check it out. I always use this one to slow/fast parts of any video
Thanks for the suggestion! I tried it and its indeed easier to select which part is slowed down and it doesn't give that watermark on the videos.
Still not the same as on devices like z2 or m8 (not to mention iphone), but at least is something. I have been looking online, especially on xda which is more reliable, to see if there is a port of the feature of any of these, especially the m8 since some apps were already ported, but no luck.
We would probably need both the camera app and gallery of the m8. From the z2 i think just the camera would be enough since from what i have seen that edit is done there after recording.
I still don't get why Samsung, from all brands with so much features and gimmicks, would just give a video editor or something to edit 120fps to slow down some parts.
Yes, totally. I hope they realize this and they make it. If you have any news about the M8 let me know.
We need to get a huge thread going to get attention
There is a thread in the Note 4 app section where a dev was able to vastly improve the quality of the stock Note 4 app. The software is already there in this time-shift app, all we need is a dev or a few to get into it and get it working. I'm not sure where we would get the most attention but if enough of us get together and request this feature somebody has to take notice. I'm willing to start a bounty and add 100 bucks to it. Here is my thread below, if you guys want to add your support that would be great or if anyone else has an idea of a better way to get some attention I'm all ears.

So I started a youtube channel dedicated to video making and vlogging on the pixel 2 XL. If anyone is interested here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/user/jrharvey592
Ive tried to make really high quality content just using the phone to record everything and plan on doing a lot of tutorials for the Pixel 2 and XL along with any other android phone. If your interested in any topics let me know. The main point of this post is to show how capable this camera is considering its just a smartphone but also to help anyone else that just has their phone but wants to make really high quality content for the web. Again... If this is something you guys are interested in let me know and Ill be happy to take ideas or make tutorials.

Just added a lot more videos
Hi - great videos. I have a Pixel 2 and have already downloaded cinema 4k based on your recommendation, and am looking to get a zhiyun crane. Would you mind adding notes/links to your youtube descriptions on products you have/recommend?
Love it! I'm glad you link to everything you use and recommend! Quick question.. I have the XL 2 as well, what do you do about storage? I haven't made it through all your videos yet to see if you cover this (but I am subscribed!) and just wondered how you get around the limitations of the built-in storage.. Is it really an issue? I'll be honest, I've not recorded much of anything on my phone since I bought it..
This is really good. I'm trying to mount a portable studio of sorts. My only grip with the Pixel 2 XL is the lack of a headphone jack, and to make things worse... the USB C port is blocked by the Gimbal (I've got a Zhiyun Smooth Q) so I'm not able to plug my mic in that scenario. I've been looking around and it seems some users were able to get a nice setup like the one I'm trying to put together using a USB C to USB C angled connector (wich I lack and I'm not able to find just yet).
On the software side, I'm having some trouble with the camera app OP suggested (it crashes a lot and has some annoying bugs like a stutter when first opened), I'd love to hear what else you recommend guys. I'll give Open Camera a shot this weekend.
Google Pixel 2 XL, Zhiyun Smooth 4, and External Microphone
Would the above configuration work OK, do you know? Or would I have balancing problems?
I already have a Smooth 4 and am currently looking for a new phone. Now that Google supports external microphones on their pixel series, I'm considering buying the Pixel 2 XL.
Any help or advice would be welcome!
so initially when I purchased my red hydrogen one the audio wasn't anything no worthy, however it was moderately acceptable at that time. Nonetheless now that I've had this device for almost 3 years, the audio has gotten progressively quieter. Call volume is so low and quiet I can barely hear anyone I'm on the phone with. Audio playing through the stereo speakers on my phone it is quieter and almost any other phone that I know of. Ringtones and notification sounds are too quiet, I seem to have to keep my phone fairly close to me at all times or I end up missing phone calls. Not to mention the microphone levels and Gain is fairly awful on phone calls people are always telling me that they can't hear me, especially on speaker phone calls. Iliterally have to yell into the phone at point blank for them to hear me. Aux output for the most part and nearly every device that I've tried it on except for a few, and uncomfortably strong static filters through, as if there's some electric feedback or static feedback coming from the device or possibly the hardware that the audio is being processed through on the device...
These are my workarounds I have allowed me to continue to use this device this long...
For audio and music coming through the built-in speakers I use an app called boom, the app includes a smaller app which is really just as smart equalizer plug in / widget, with system wine equalization and loudness and also virtualization control.
When it comes to phone calls, and especially video calls, I'm simply forced to get as close as possible and often close my eyes just so I can attempt to understand and listen to what people are saying to me. I really can't express enough how annoying that could be, is quite a handicap technologically. It seems everyone and their cheap phones and devices nowadays play so loud and sound so much louder and clearer than this red hydrogen one could possibly compare to, especially considering how much this phone cost when it originally came out...
Now when it comes to AUX output, I am forced to use a hi-fi USB OTG adapted DAC
(dragonfly red), so I'm sure there are many cheaper more obtainable and more practical DAC options out there, even in line aux amplifiers, that utilize tiny capacitors and tiny little circuit boards to draw power from the weak audio output signal and amplify your audio in line without any other source of power...
In general the best option on this device seems to be Bluetooth output, yet even that seems to fall short when it compares the other devices and they're built in sound processing...
It's funny it just seems to be such a concern to me considering I came from an LG v30, which house possibly the best and highest quality sound and audio processing with built-in quad that hi-fi dedicated audio processors...
Yep, I gave up the world's best mobile phone audio quality device I've ever seen or read about with built-in hardware, I gave that phone up for the aesthetics, and unique functions of a 3D display, that hilariously I rarely ever desire to use or play with, honestly I agree rather bored of taking 3D photos and editing 3D pictures and video only for myself to be the only person that got to experience it got pretty boring, and truthfully every single game available in 3D on the device, it's quite lame and boring to someone like me, my 7 year old really enjoys it and I let her play some 3D games on my phone. But it really does run the battery down a lot faster than regular applications, so I don't even do that much anymore.
I'm pretty sure that I'm on the precipice of collecting and saving and or obtaining a newer and better cellular device to adopt as my daily driver, it's really only a matter of time before that happens. Currently I'm in a long drawn-out process to root and flash a custom ROM on a Motorola g stylus XT2043-4 that Is cracked but functional it happened to find in a vehicle that was purchased by the car lot my family used to own before we closed down at the beginning of this year.
Anything has got to be better than the sacrifice I'm making just to feel this highly engineered aluminum milled ergonomic 3D paperweight that I once desired and admired so much...
I guess unfortunate that I purchased this phone at a major discount considering the company had discontinued all development and future product releases, I honestly paid $185, and I just looked them up the other day and you can find red hydrogen one phones at around $58 on eBay if you look hard enough, some were even brand new never used....
Personally if I was going to buy another $100 phone that has no product support or updates, I'd buy another next bit Robin phone and root and flash custom ROM on again, now that phone was quite impressive when mounted especially for the price...
Thanks for reading my post, LOL I'm quite interested to hear literally anyone else's experience with this device, especially if they're anywhere close to similar to mine...

I can sympathise with your experience as all my previous Sony Xperia flafship devices including LG V series has impecable audio sound quality speaker hardware & sound system boosting digital or DAC audio software, but unfortunately the Red hydrogen one audio performance does not come close to compliment or reflect the 3D visuals capabilities. the speakers sounds tinny, lacking base, no depth or a proper rendition & the 3D audio surround sound enabled is actually more lackluster than disabled & furthur deminished the audio loudness. I sincerely beleived if the Red hydrogen one phone had continued to receive firmware updates it would have improved audio, video display & other tweats. I am a big fan of the Titanium version premium built quality & design & I currently own it in 2023 with worldwide SIM LTE works astonishingly well for today's standards but lack all future software updates is a pity, I actually am proud of showing my Red hydrogen one phone in public & draw parallel to the luxury VERTU phones as attention grabbling....
