Is there any way to make apps like: YouTube, WatchESPN, NBC Sports, Dish Anywhere, etc. display full screen video around the camera instead of being cut of. Due to the cut off up top YouTube video's are also cut off at the bottom of the screen slightly.
Really interested in this also! Maybe with root?
I can say that MX Player videos get cropped and I wish they didn't.

No, I'm on November update and no full screen option.
Youtube Apk
There is a YouTube modded apk that allows the pinch to zoom feature to work for irregular aspect ratios. Im not 100% sure if this will work on the Essential Phone however it works perfectly fine on the LG G6, it should just crop out some of the video so it can go full screen. Just download the MS Config file and the YouTube apk, dark theme is optional. Unfortunately I cannot post any links as I am a new user, but you can find a link on the LG G6 full screen YouTube thread.

Yep, me too. Will watch this thread and hope they fix it soon.
Amazon Prime full screen display for 21:9 movies
Saw "Arrival" with Amazon Prime app which utilizes the whole screen including the camera notch bar. Wow! what a sight. Hope Netflix, Hulu and some other video player app can do the same soon.
I'm really upset at the lack of immersive experience. Not a single video app takes advantage of this beautiful screen-- excepting Amazon which is hit or miss with full screen. It seems to differ from video to video...
Anyone know a tweak or a hack to get some immersive support?
Thanks

I don't know how (and would love to know) but custom ROMS (lineage for example) does the full screen mode.

It super annoying especially when watching videos in Chrome and the nav bar is white and still shows the status bar. If Lineage really does get rid of it, then I might need to rom
Viewing in fullscreen is possible with the aforementioned app. The pinch to zoom doesn't work due to the notch fill in not being enabled. To use fullscreen download the app, enable developer options, and once you've enabled developer options go to essential notch settings, set per application, and choose the app. Then click always use notch area. Pinch to zoom will now allow video to fill the screen, and the YouTube app will make use of the new formatting.

Here you go buddy...http://gizmee.com/honeycomb-live-wallpaper-for-all-android-devices
If Honeycomb gives every users a mind-blowing experience from Froyo and Gingerbread, Honeycomb 3.1 is quite a update in terms of user experiences.
It improves over quite a number of areas to fix the glitches from here and there due to a first generation OS release.
One phrase to describe it is
Smoothness and responsiveness.
I had a head-to-head comparison with iPad 2 (my friend's) and my Xoom last weekend.
While apps I can find almost what I need from both iOS and Android (tablet compatible), one observable issue is the screen and apps responsiveness. Even my Xoom at that time was overclocked to 1.5G thanks to Tiamat's kernel, it barely matched iPad 2's screen by screen browsing, web page browsing and speed of apps opening etc.
With this 3.1 update, I thought Google hit home run on this front.
Other improvements includes previous mentioned by other folks
1. Recovery boot option appears (from folks who updated "naturally")
2. Under system update , there is a button to hit "check now" , so that we don't need to change system time to force a check everytime.
3. Resizable widgets (Gmail widget tested) is very handy
4. other publicly announced improvements.
Still exploring features now, rooted with instructions from this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073884
Thanks stachre!
Will post a quick review with more screenshots on website. =)
Happy xooming folks!!!
Along with your points, I like that the recent apps bar now scrolls as well.
The YouTube app looks awesome in HD.

Bluetooth sucks. My keyboard keeps dropping when the mouse is connected. Other than that this thing seems great. Just waiting for some new kernels to drop now!
The new Quick Controls in the browser are fantastic. Overall the browser is much more responsive.
I've also noticed the keyboard lag seems to be gone.
Other differences are minor....
- the selection carrot when typing is more green
- the keyboard clicks as you type
- the Wi-Fi icon shows when you are uploading, downloading
I'm sure I will find more but its only been an hour since I flashed.

I'm wondering if you guys could test and see if the portrait lag is still there?
When you are in portrait mode, does sliding left or right in the home screen still lag? Thanks!

Also in Market, you can choose "app content filter". Damn I can't select "High Maturity" alone.
Thanks jiwengan for the quick reply. Not exactly sure how I should interpret your answer though? Are you saying that there is no lag when in portrait mode anymore? Thanks again!
Can you actually rate apps in the market on Honeycomb yet?

Quick controls look just like the ones that were already present in labs.
do you still have to be rooted to use a screenshot app?
I'm liking the performance enhancements.
For the browser quick controls, just to go settings in the browser, advanced and google labs.
I don't see any addition to leave comments yet in the market though.

in labs? So what exactly changed in 3.1? People keep saying they love the new browser but i dont see it any diff?
Labs is a section in the browser options where you have a few options to alternate your UI for example. One of which are the quick controls.
And they changed a bit so they got even better. Just try them...

He got confused on your questions.
his answer number 1 which was no, meant that when you actually turn it from horizontal to portrait, it still lags slightly before changing the screen orientation..
and his number 2 was to answer your actual question, which according to him is yes, it runs smoother than before.....
I'd like to see this for myself, but I'M STILL WAITING!

Portrait is smoother, but still not as smooth as landscape on mine. The update is fantastic though. Overall performance is better. The quick controls redefine tabbed browsing to me. No complaints.
The quick controls are two "rows" thick now instead of 1 and there are a few more controls. It is more definitely different from before as I used the quick controls heavily and noticed the change instantly. Overall a much nicer experience.
Has media playback improved? I'm mostly interested in how HC 3.1 does with scene HD TV show MKVs (720p with H264/AC3).
Thanks.
In dolphin if I full screen/expand an embedded video the nav bar pops in and out in landscape, I gave firefox a shot but that won't even play embedded video (audio plays but no video) unless it is youtube.
So which broswer should I go with, or if you guys have a fix for the above issues, I'd prefer something with a lastpass addon but I can do without.
AOSP browser is still my favorite after using a couple alternatives
Chrome or stock are the best ones imho
AOSP is just soooo slow, chrome is still working fine but no plugins means I have to use lastpass to launch websites.
I was hoping there was something better but it seems like I'm SOL.
When I used Dolphin browser, I found it to be close to the stock browser, just more feature rich. I tried using Chrome, Firefox, and Skyfire, but found the stock browser to be more of a favorite. I did try a lil browser that was really good with functionality with no bells and whistles at all, Naked Browser. I liked it and it is Flash enabled. Still, I keep coming back to the stock browser.

I've found AOSP to be far slower than dolphin (jetpack didn't make much difference for me though) and just slower than chrome.

Not sure what you mean about the nav bar popping in and out as I've had no issues with dolphin, When you view embedded videos make sure to have jetpack turned off (if you have it installed)
Opera Beta
It's based on webkit and extremely smooth.

When I view embedded video fullscreen in landscape the navbar pops up then, goes away, then pops up, ad nauseum. This has been happening ever since I first installed dolphin (5+mos ago) and way before jetpack was ever installed.
They seem to have fixed it for youtube but try this http://t.co/5h7Hx3UPCP it's a bill maher whosay link, if you view it full screen landscape in dolphin you'll see what I'm talking about.
So a little testing:
AOSP - Runs fine but it doesn't expand to fill the screen once the navbar hides
Opera - Won't expand the video
Chrome - Runs fine but it doesn't expand to fill the screen once the navbar hides
Firefox - Audio plays but no video

Not sure why it would behave differently from phone to phone unless maybe it is a CM/Dolphin issue, although I was running AOKP for a while and it had the same issue, not going to put a new ROM on my phone to check though

I haven't been able to get Picture-in-Picture working since I've been on Android 8 - DP2 all the way through DP4. I've been hoping that when Android Oreo officially released that it'd fix the issue but I just upgraded and still can't get it to work. Has anyone else found a work around for this?

Yes, and it's working for me
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that they don't have a reliable / user friendly way to make ads work well while in YouTube PIP mode. Too bad, especially because 1) it's a #$%@ move. 2) YouTube Red is only available in select countries.
I am still getting the forced reboot when you have PIP for YouTube playing and then toggling the screen off and on. Anyone seeing this too?
Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
It works on Duo, so I would try that and if it works then you'll know it's a YouTube v YouTube Red thing. I have Red and it works fine so I can't test this for you.
I also have Youtube Red, but it forces reboot for me if my screen is turned back on after it had turned off or if I turn off the screen while Youtube is playing in PIP mode.

I can confirm this happens when I use PiP as well. Can't let the screen turn off....
Have submitted to Google.
I have it working fine on Youtube Red.
Everyone on this thread -- the PiP mode only works for certain apps that support it. Not all apps support it. Also, all the apps that do support it will request for your permission to use the mode.
If you go to Apps & notifications > Special app access, you will find a permission node for picture-in-picture.

Yes only video calls. That's all I have used it for.
I was struggling with my phone freaking out while doing video chat on either Teams and Duo. Both apps did the same thing and I provided feedback to their developers that it appeared to start on my note 20 ultra 5g when android 11 landed.
Today I realized that if I changed my video resolution for the phone display from FHD+ to WQHD+ the freezing stops altogether...
Anyone else able to test this out?
My video Resolution is set to 16:9 FHD 1920x1080 (30 fps) and I use Duo to TeleHealth VideoChat with two different Doctors on a regular basis with absolutely no problems! Works great - Android 11/OneUI 3.0. I don't use "Teams" - hate it!!!

Yeah, that's screen resolution under "Display" - that's what I have also. What I was talking about was in Camera Video Settings! Open you're camera, go to settings and look for "Front Video Size" - select 16:9, then open the Resolution and see all the choices and grab what I said before.

I will have to check that out because that makes me wonder if the bug is a scaling issue between showing the preview of your camera on your display at different resolutions
I actually don't think one has anything to do with the other - my setting is probably what we're recording at to send to the other party!!! I have to log off so I'll check back later...
