Replacement screen: How can I tell if it's authentic ? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Basically, the title is my question. I cracked my screen And I'm taking it to a shop to get fixed I just want to make sure they give me authentic screen instead of a knock off. Is there any way to get specs and numbers from the screen so I can compare them? Thanks

One way is to take it to Best Buy's Geek squad. They are a Samsung factory authorized repair center and your warranty will remain intact. If you take it to a 3rd party repair center, your warranty will be void.

All Best Buy Geek Squad are Samsung authorized repair centers? Not a 100% sure, but I think the one in my town isn't An authorized repair center.

Based on my experience, the after market ones don't usually have the oleophobic coatings, or at least not as good in quality.

Not every Best Buy has techs that are trained and factory certified. But it's worth trying to find one in order to keep your warranty intact.

I'm not 100% sure how it works for phones as I only work on laptops but usually if there's not a repair agent in store they'll send it out to one of our main repair centers. Again I can only speak from experience of working on laptops but if you don't have adh coverage through best buy the repair cost is usually not worth it (we junk out probably half of the tablets that come in with cracked screens).

I never thought they could produce fake s8 screens. I thought it was samsung patent to do that.

Honestly, I don't think any 3rd party has the manufacturing power to make a fake S8 screen. In the worst case it will be manufactured by samsung, but either assembled by a 3rd party or distributed thru an unofficial channel. Maybe this affects the oleophobic coating as mentioned, or the digitizer, but I really doubt it, I haven't seen knock offs for this model.

Once the display is in place, I don't think you can do much about it. So the only thing you can do is to make sure that either the repair service is genuine and trustworthy, or you can buy a Samsung screen yourself and take it to your local repair shop (preferably one that does an open service - in front of the customers).

The reason why I question the Quality of the screens is because I've been to several different phone repair shops and they all give me different prices of the screens. For example one place told me they get there screens for 180 and will put it in for 229 (cheapest I've found) while another place told me 299 for a screen and they'll replace it for 380( most expensive I've found). So, im wokndering how the other guy was getting it for 180.
Also, I want my Digitizer and LCD screen back and the most expensive guy was acting like he didn't want to give it back and also he was going to charge me more if he gave it back.
I was going to try and repair just the screen and keep it as a spare.

FWIW: I paid $249 at Best Buy, including labor. OEM screen, Samsung factory certified repair facility, warranty intact.....

You can get either OEM screens directly from samsung certified vendors, or generics. They aren't knock offs, they're considered "after market". The vendor who quoted you a lower price likely has a deal set with another vendor to buy in bulk, thus lowering the price of each individual screen.

I have bought screens for other devices that claim oem but they most def where not. Broke again splintered not like authentic gorilla glass. But like a cheap sheet of glass. When i brought it to the companies attention they removed. Our screens are oem replacements from the website. I had it in screenshots. It was a horrible ordeal because there substandard products they claimed quality broke on their own. No drops no nothing. I've repaired my share of phones. So i only try to buy oem direct

How can one know an original OEM screen from a copy version? I broke my Samsung S8 screen and want it fixed, however i'm scared of replacing it with a copy version as against the original version. How can i tell which is which? Pls note i don't live in the USA

[INFO] Smashed my screen!!!!

I smashed my screen a couple of week ago. Dropped a heavy lamp onto it and the sharp top end went into the edge of the screen and shattered a large proportion of it (I'm not blaming the screen cos that would have broken any screen). Luckily bought cover for it and returned it for repairs, due back this week.
But here's the interesting part of the story. I was searching ebay for accessories and came across the following:

So rung comet and they told me it is repaired and will be ready to pick up this week.
How do I know its mine? I took a picture of it before returning and the cracks across the screen are identical.
I can only assume comet are replacing it, even though they are claiming they repaired it.
In thier terms and conditions, if a product is replaced by a new one then the remainder of the warranty then becomes void (only covered for repairs). But they haven't said anything about it. Guess thats good for me, new transformer and keep warranty.
Honestly, this sounds very worrying and maybe this is a suing job. Surely a company isn't allowed to sell your property. What if you had sensitive data on it for example? If you can prove it's yours as you say you can, it looks like an open and shut case to me.
If I were you I'd ask for a proper explanation from them and show them exactly what you are showing us.
Warranty? Warrant doesn't cover dropping crap on it. Insurance would, but not warranty.
Lamp impact damage isn't a manufacturing defect. How the heck did you get the retailer to repair/replace it? Did you buy a replacement or service plan with it?

But very true that i could have had sensitive information on it but thankfully factory reset it before giving it back (just in case something like this happened i guess).

my correction, it was a service plan i bought (insurance) I bought with it, about £109 for a year that covers accidental damage. And so glad I did
Bonus, I have the serial number of my Asus. Now this will be an interesting conversation when I go pick up my Asus and try to match up the the serial no.
I'm assuming you are in the UK. Not sure how things work there, but most insurance policies here say they can replace the device and it still takes away the warranty period. As long as they wipe the device, they can do whatever they want with it. Same thing as a return. ymmv, but i wouldnt expect any sort of compensation from a company that is holding up their end of the bargain (taking a broken tablet from you and giving you a non-broken tablet.)
I'm more annoyed about the fact that if they were going to replace it why have they kept me away from my precious Asus for 3 weeks, they have (or someone) has had time to put it on ebay even.
Otherwise not to fussed with a replacement and I think your right that they prob have kept their end of the bargain. Will scrutinise the terms and conditions later.
You'll probably find what's happened is Comet have taken your tablet, the underwriter of the service plan has agreed to replace for a new device, the store then retains the device (insurance write-off) and a staff member asks to buy it for, lets say £50 for this argument which is then a 100% profit for the store due to it being writen-off. This is similar to how PC World worked when I was there during college/uni years and why you see clearance stock with bits missing/damage to them at reduced prices. Oh and staff get silly discounts off damaged products as they generally couldn't sell some stuff, we had people getting laptops for £50 or cheaper on the odd occassion.
However remember this could just be a coincidence lol

i hope they havent actually sold off your tablet, thats a joke, tell them you want to be compensated for the trouble this has caused, you could have had sensitive data on the machine. And you know they are selling your one online. Maybe the person with the ebay account is a dodgy comet employee.
im gonna follow and see what happens, i wouldnt be happy waiting when there are about 4 different honeycomb tablets to pick from now, and they have kept you without your one. the xoom was meant to be the first, but i didnt get one, as this was out first, xoom got delayed and to be honest, why have you had to wait at all.
I am dissappointed that I had to wait so long just to get a replacement, and hurts a little (i know its sad) to see my original transformer on ebay cos it was mine and i loved it.
But to be honest they have kept within their contract, which says if they can't fix it they will replace it. And repairs/replacements will take approx 3 weeks.
Nonetheless i will mention it when i go pick up my transformer on thursday and make a point of why I had to wait when they new they were going replace it atleast a week ago.

It says they wont let you return notebooks or computers, but they have the tablet under notebooks? I have one here that I would like to open and inspect to compare with my amazon tablet, which ever one has "less issues" I would like to keep... but I dont know if I should open the adorama transformer?? Any help...
Call Adorama. Tell them that it will be a gift. If my dad does not like it (1. opened; 2. unopened), can I return it?

Regardless, just return the worst one to Amazon. They don't check for serial numbers or anything. I returned my Walmart TF to Newegg and vice-versa without any issues. The UPC code is the same.

I know everyone says this about TigerDirect and i think it even says so on the website. But when I called them and told them all my issues and asked to just to just get my money back. They gave me no issues. Instantly emailed me the return label, paid for by them, and a few days later I got my money refunded too. I think I might have just gotten very lucky and got a great rep though, becuase my other times calling about the same issues I got a bunch of bs and run around. So i think if you really try the reps can do anything they want for you. haha

Ok no offense, but you are exactly the reason WHY there are those kinds of return policies in the first place. I'm dead serious. Returns are expensive for retailers. They are bad enough when there are legit reasons for the return but when people do stuff like what you are attempting it's fraudulent in my opinion. Stores don't exist to work like libraries where you check out an item play with it see if it has issues and then return it when you are done playing.
If people would stop doing things like what you are attempting return procedures would likely be a bit more lax and restocking fee's wouldn't exist. Businesses are in business to make money, shocking i know. And returns are not profitable.
What you should be doing is taking any build quality issues up with the manufacturer NOT the retailer. They didn't make it and shouldn't be suffering a loss so you can play "which one will i keep". As a business owner myself i can spot people like yourself a mile away and i usually direct your business elsewhere, customers like that just aren't worth the trouble.

I disagree. Online retailers need to know that people are not able to "try" things out before purchasing like a B&M. For example, recently, I bought $300 worth of sunglasses to see which pair fit my face/style. I will mail back the ones that I did not select.
Why should it be different with electronics? No major B&M electronic retailer has restocking fees anymore except Sears. I'm sure that will end eventually. For me, I will not shop at a place that has a fee when it comes to small electronics (handheld devices, phones, etc.).
Don't worry, OP. No one is getting a free lunch from Amazon either.

I love my TF and I am keeping one.. I just put one on craiglist for $415 I think thats a fair price.. I am not "making" any money but that was never the point.. I just wanted to make sure I got a good one... they both are great with very little light leak, they both have the unbalanced sound but I see there is a fix for this already, so some one is gonna get lucky and get a transformer locally at cost, with no tax! lol
Not to be too legalistic but as far as I know no merchant through the use of any policy or provision can excuse themselves from the obligation of selling merchandise that is fit for its intended purpose.
If I sell you a toaster that does not toast, a knife that does not cut or a tablet that bleeds light out of the sides of the screen you have a pretty good case to demand full reimbursement.
Anyone can put up a sign "All Sales Are Final" or "Absolutely No Returns" or whatever they like but store policies never ever under any circumstances allow for a seller to commit fraud. If you tell the people that you gave the money to that the item does not work as promised through their onsite advertising (i.e. no mention of unequal sound or screenshots that do not show light bleed) you are entitled to cancel the sale since they took your money and did not give you the promised goods in exchange. You not obligated to let them try again, charge you a restocking fee, give you store credit or anything else.
Obviously I'm not a lawyer so you're mileage may vary. But I have found by plainly stating that the product in question is not fit for its intended purpose and as such I would like a refund yields a mostly desirous result. If the retailer held firm I would then call my credit card company and then worse case small claims.
The key is to keep saying unfit - unusable - not as advertised. Technical terms can cause subjective analysis while those three are pretty clear and can be elaborated on but not replaced (i.e. it's unfit because I bought it listen to music but one speaker is louder than the other, it is unusable because I bought it to view photos but the screen bleeds lights from the sides, etc.).
I'm sure they will help you regardless but no reason to bow down to some internet verbiage that outright dismisses their obligations under most state laws. As far as I am concerned a product received in unadvertised condition is DOA. Might as well be a brick if it doesn't do what it's supposed to do how it's supposed to do it.

BTW the returns policy as it relates to certain items is set by the manufacturers not by Adorama.
If an item in this category is found to be faulty or damaged on arrival it will be covered under the manufacturer warranty - but needs to be returned directly the manufacturer.

How many companies have you seen that are this proactive? (I've heard Asus is active here too. That was an extra selling point for the TF for me.)
I usually deal with them for camera gear and they are very good about returns. Looks like their laptop policy is a wee bit different but I guess we now know why.

Send it back to LG for repairs $100-160 cost
I'd look for a local cell phone place that does repairs, yes the nexus 4 has the glass that wraps the edges but you can always show them this and if they say yes they can repair it then I'd let them repair it..they should warranty their work and you won't have to be without a phone ..id do it that way pending on the price compared to sending the phone in for warranty work.

Hey what exactly was wrong with your screen. Mine works fine, but just has a cracked appearance. This means that they will only have to replace the glass aka digitizer but not the LCD underneath. There for my repair should be cheaper than most people. What did you have to get replaced? I'm curious if my repair cost would be less than yours. Thanks.

Same thing happened to me today, very minor drop, and complete crack, touch screen is unresponsive... Local LG repair centre does not have it in stock, so I am waiting for an update from him.... It is seriously terrible quality of the phone, I had dropped so many phones hundreds of times, never, nothing happened.. This is really terrible....

Buddy, you have dropped a GLASS made phone, what do you expect??? Sometimes-you drop it and it doesn`t break, next time- you drop it and it breaks!!! It`s GLASS. Probably they need to come up with a titanium edition, just for you!

Yes, you are right... Nexus 4 is the best looking smartphone I have ever come across so far... And Truth is I am never used to cases or covers for phones, and If at all I have to cover with a protection case, it is waste of the killer beauty again..That is why I await Larry's promises to be true on xPhone/Next Nexus(For Google I/O'13), as he said “In today’s multi screen world, the opportunities are endless… battery life is a huge issue… when you drop your phone it shouldn’t go splat,”... My decision was utter wrong on Nexus 4, I'm a hardcore nexus fan... After I get it fixed, I buy a cover and give to my brother....

Just wanted to say I've cracked my phone as well (woe!), less cracked-rather than smashed in multiple places. Was just minding my own business playing a bit of Ruzzle whilst pondering the questions of life on the toilet...
Anyway, called up LG support (make sure to find their cheaper phone number from saynoto0870 website); and was told they'd send me an envelope with details on the repair.
If you go on the website to schedule a repair, it'll tell you they carry out fixed price repairs at £130. This should leave the phone under warranty.
When I received the envelope, it was a letter from a company called Regenersis; who appear to be the repairs company responsible for a lot of outsourced repairs internationally. They also appear to be the source of some internet ranting due to bad customer service (seems to be a general trend with these third party repairs companies).
Anyway, sent phone off yesterday so will try to report anything back with regards to prices, results etc.
BTW this is for UK only, although I suspect LG will do something similarly for most other countries with regards to repairs.
I think they should have made the back out of flexiglass.

So just called up Regenersis on Friday morning and they gave me a quote of 122GBP for full repair, service and postage back to me. 8 pounds cheaper than the fixed price on the LG page. So paid via direct debit over the phone and have been told it should be sent off in a few days as both the phone and parts are ready to be put together. I would expect to receive it sometime mid-next week. Will post back on repair results. (If the quality is good, it would have been about the same price as buying my own screen from Ebay. It would probably take aprox. the same amount of time due to long postage times; though the main advantage being that I keep my warrantee).

Final update on the phone repair situation. I received my phone this morning from Regenersis after a total time since send off of aprox. 2 weeks since registration on the LG repairs website. (What more of a present could I ask for on my Bday!).
Anyway, in summary; the repair itself after paying took only 1-2 days.
To my surprise the experience overall with these guys were reasonably pleasant despite the bad reviews on the net. Although I suspect that's the standard scenario where someone will only complain when something goes wrong.
Either way, the repair cost less than the quoted guaranteed LG repair price on their website of 130GBP.
Tips for anyone planning on sending their broken Nexus 4 to these guys:
Register through LG repairs service first. Book your slot online, then give the LG guys a call next day to confirm it's gone through so that they can get Regenersis to send through a repair letter with details.
Once the phone is sent off to Regenersis (I'd suggest Royal Mail tracked as this'll allow you to know exactly when it's arrived in Glasgow); give them a call within about 2/3 days to ask about an online quote or otherwise when it'll be examined by their engineers. (I had to wait until next before calling back to ask about the price and paying through the phone via direct debit).
After that I'd suggest giving them about 3/4 working days to repair if they have all the parts ready etc, before calling back to check on progress.
With any luck you'll get your phone back within about 2 weeks.
I've attached a picture of the repaired phone; it seems good as new and there are no scratch marks or signs that the phone has been tampered in any way. (Sorry for the bad photo!).
Edit: Had a play with the phone, a horizontal line across the upper quarter of the screen doesn't actually respond to touch; only has display. Sooo....called up LG again this morning to have them tell me they'll send me another package to send back again to Regenersis... Only one piece of advice, don't for frack's sake break your Nexus 4. Seriously!
Turns out after the repair, the phone was placed back under warrantee status allowing me to raise the issue up with Google themselves. So after a quick call to the US phone line (cheaper with the say no to 0870 redirect phone line), they agreed to send me a replacement. I received it within 3 days from the call and haven't needed to be absent of a phone for over a week if sent to repair again. Now to simply send the broken faulty phone back to google via their supplied prepaid packaging.

Newsflash! LG is not in the glass production business. They receive their Gorilla Glass from Corning, just like most of the other manufacturers out there. If the glass broke from you dropping it, it has ZERO to do with LG's build quality.

Was your phone repaired or replaced? Was the internal memory wiped?
I have a cracked unresponsive screen and will be making an insurance claim (so slightly different process). Unfortunately I hadn't enabled USB debugging so I'm struggling to get the files off the device before I send it off.
I'll be insisting on a repair rather than a replacement and I don't want my device being factory reset.

Hey Carpetboy,
Mine was simply repaired, but all my files had been backed up to dropbox and gmail so wasn't too bad. My gf had a few things fixed through insurance and they've just replaced it each time because they're not necessarily specialised to deal with repairs; especially if it's a very new phone it seems. Though if it's just a screen repair it might not be too bad.

Cheers for the info. I managed to get all the critical files off it last night through the toolkit so I'm not as worried if they just replace it now.
LG Repaired Cracked Screen for $153
Hello everyone,
I recently had my phone repaired by LG. They replace the screen for $153. The repair facility is located in Ft Worth Tx, and the payment center is located in Alabama. It cost me $20 to send it 2nd day air via UPS. Also, I bought another nexus 4, and now am returning it back to google less then 15% restocking fee. Basically, i rented a nexus 4 16gb for $50 over a 2 week period.

I went to my provider here in Canada as well and it was because my phone over heated and the front glass cracked and my provider told me it would cost about $250 and as I read these comments it makes me question why is it $250 in Canada but only $140-$160 in other countries? its not fair ( well in my opinion it should be the same price just in CAD ) I too need this number! it just makes no sense ! I live in AB so tax shouldnt be the problem neither.

Motorola warranty is worthless

I have a 2014 Moto X, 16 GB with the bamboo back, on Verizon. The back is peeling off, and I've just finished speaking with Motorola.
I didn't buy the device - it was traded. Despite the fact that I have the box, the IMEI, and everything except the original order information, they refuse to help me. If I had the order info, I'd be well on my way to a new one, but without it, they're happy to leave me completely swinging by myself.
So if you're thinking about buying one used, or giving one as a gift... I wouldn't recommend it. They don't care, and couldn't be bothered to try and find a solution. Last motorola product I'll ever buy.

In what way? Tell me of another company that doesn't honor their warranty if you gift a device. It's not like I don't have the serial number, IMEI, and every other bit of info for the thing. Every other company on the planet uses serial numbers for warranties. It shouldn't matter who owns the device or if they kept their receipt. This isn't a pair of headphones from Best Buy, here.
Not only that, but it's a 2014. It can only be so old. It's not like this might somehow be out of warranty.

Can you not glue the back?
At the minimum you could send it in and they can reglue it or replace the back cover. It will cost you but it's better than nothing. You might be able to negotiate a deal.
You never get warranty coverage without proof of purchase, it's basically Warranty 101. My advice would be to contact the original seller and ask them if they can do a warranty return for you.
I have never heard of a company that warrants an item with no proof of purchase. Even with proof of purchase, the warranty on most consumer goods is not transferable.
Factory warranties on cars is the only case I can think of where they don't care about proof of purchase (because they already know when it was purchased).
One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes your experience will vary from rep to rep.
And also your attitude going into it is important as well.
I have a friend that gets no help ANYWHERE, and it's because of the manner in which he speaks. He's not outright rude, but he's a bit socially inept, so he comes off very abrasive. You can hear kindness. People like to help nice people.

The micro USB port on my black 16gb X broke. I took it to my local brick & mortar Verizon store and they ordered a replacement device, no questions asked. They never asked to see any paperwork.
It sounds like you've got nothing to loose by trying the same thing?

Ask the seller for the info. I think it's good Motorola doesn't accept warranty without this information because thiefs will not have this info, only people who honestly bought it...
(btw it's very stupid for a company to not honor warranty, within the normal warranty period, for owners after the first owner because this severly impacts resell price and thus selling price)

So if you purchase iPhone from Craigslist and it is still under warranty, Apple will still honor the warranty.
No Android OEM has this kind of customer service, not HTC/Motorola/Samsung/Google as far as I know.
I have read reports from some folks who successfully applied a small amount of glue under the peeled up wood, might be worth a try

My Nexus S that I bought used off eBay needed a screen replacement, and Samsung did so - no questions asked. Great experience. I haven't had to deal with an OEM for warranty since.

You can either remove the whole back and re glue it or just use a very fine felt brush to apply glue to the edge of wood. Worked for me. Sent mine back because a different corner peeled. @dg4prez
Fix it your self, It does suck they wont honor a product under warranty.
I know a lot of companies who follow this rule but there are many companies who don't.
I always try and buy product from companies who have exceptional customer service and warranties, its worth it, even if you pay a little more.
I bought a Moto X for a friend of mine, my card, my email, my delivery address. He broke his screen a week later, he called them up and they asked him to send it in, charged him $120 for a new screen and sent him back a new phone, he never needes the order number or anything.
Last week i tore the leather on my moto x, called motorola, they asked for order number, email, address, charged me $25 and sent me a new phone and i will be sending back the one that has the torn back.
Guess it depends on who you speak with.
Also, as was mentioned earlier Apple warranties extend to any owner of the phone, since their proof of purchase comes up when the IMEI/SN is entered (you can even check warranty status on their website)
Only company that got close to this is samsung, i used to work in a cellphone shop and wed brick ALOT of phones testing things out, including note 3, s5 etc and samsung out always unbrick them for free even though we were not the original buyers.

That rule definitely would't survive here in Europe. No matter either written or not. It's against consumer protection regulations. And what is even more weird is that the provision is in direct conflict with freedom of contract principle. Neither state nor any third party could interfere with the contract without clear legal basis. Warranty refers to the sold good not to the person who bought it.

Companies warranty to the original purchaser except if it is a gift. Did you register the device with them or did the original purchaser?

Cost of Parts

Very pleased to see that, at least compared to my previous S9+, the cost of some key parts for the S20 FE is much lower! The complete display unit, for example, is half the price - and, I'm guessing, easier to replace than a curved unit. Those curved displays may look cool (my S9+ still looks great, and I just ordered a new battery for it to keep it going strong) - but the replacement price always made my eyes water. Look forward to a long, happy and affordable relationship with the S20 FE...
the other day I was wondering if you might get lucky with an official replacement screen, one that didn't have whatever defects are blighting the originals.
I did see a Hugh Jefferys video where he showed Samsung are starting to go down the same road as apple in locking the original components to the mother board so you can't do your own repairs.

Yes, I wouldn't be surprised - we can only hope that right-to-repair legislation gets passed so that at least we might more easily access parts and service. As it stands now, the local authorized service centers won't touch my international, dual-SIM S20 FE, and I have to order parts from Europe.
