Hi all XSP users
in just a few days, it will be 1 year since i own this phone. here i'm trying to give a sort of review-ish view and opinion about this phone
So without further ado, allow me to start (please forgive me for any inappropriate or ineligible english since its not my main language)
1 year ago i was looking for a replacement for my samsung galaxy gio which has become obsolete (hardware wise especially) because it cannot keep up with my demands. so at that time i was searching for a phone that meets my budget (cant go on a spending spree at that time) but still packs a can of whoop-ass.
at that time in my country was the time where 3 high spec phones launches samsung galaxy s4, sony xperia Z, and oppo find 5. all of them were top of the class. too bad they were all above my budget
other brand like HTC has no interesting line up for me, LG has some not bad spec phone but none to my liking.
Lo and behold i found out about the xperia SP about 2 weeks before the event. at the price it was offered, no other phone can match XSP specs, camera wise, processor wise (at that time of course). i bought the phone without hesitation.
my review
Size
for me this phone hits the sweet spot for size. although i can still held 5,5 inch phone without problem, but this phone is nice to grasp
screen size
screen size is adequate for me, although sometimes feel a little too small. too bad its not IPS
camera
one of the downfall for XSP for me. the camera quality is quite bad, my dads nokia x5 can even shot almost if not sometimes better images. though in my opinion since 4.3 update and using xperia M ported camera its a little bit better, i still wish it was better
processor
one of the best performance processor for midrange phone at that time and still is today IMO.
GPU
same, one of the best for playing games on a midrange phone
RAM
this is the ultimate donwfall for me in XSP. we were promoted with a 1GB RAM for XSP but how much did we get?? just a freakin' 768 ram.
thats downright false advertising. no amount of excuse and logic can justify a 1GB ram on spec sheet and only 768 in reality. this is what tied down our XSP from becoming the Beast that it could've and should've been.
although after 4.3 update the RAM increased to 848, it's still a long way from 1GB. even lenovo can put 900+MB on their 1GB RAM phone, so i am truly dissapointed at sony for this one.
My Experience
okay, hardware review aside, now im going to share how the phone feels for my daily usage
my XSP is LB, but i root it. i'll split this part to pre 4.3 and 4.3
PRE 4.3
the phone before the 4.3 update was so-so performance wise for me. mind you im a gamer, and understanding that our XSP have adreno 320 it should be handle all graphics intensive game, so i installed many heavy game. real boxing, real racing, asphalt 8, modern combat 4, NFS, chaos rings. all of that game should've played flawlessly if not for that darn RAM. you cant even browse and listen to walkman without the walkman suddenly stop. you gotta change the ram management and dalvik to help ease the RAM management, n i think that sucks. because if im not an xda member and dont root my phone, how else am i gonna improve XSP performance. there were slight regret buying this phone at that moment, but i cant change my phone again. no phone pique my interest yet again.
POST 4.3
post 4.3 update the phones performance got better a little bit since the increase in RAM but, performance wise its still so-so. if i have to give it a score before 4.3 was 7 and now it was 7.5. but luckily 4.3 update brings more than just bigger RAM it brings loads of things, from social camera, updated media apps, themes, so updating to 4.3 was like having a new phone all over again.
Conclusion
im still happy with this phone, eventhough theres major flaw (RAM)
so, will i still use this phone? YES
is it still one of the strongest budget mid range phone right now? YES (IMO, compared with other brand like samsung, LG, HTC, lenovo, OPPO)
will u still suggest this phone to friend of relatives? if they're not going to root it, NO, if they're going to root it then YES
well thats what i think about our beloved XSP
please share your opinion about this :good:
You don't need 500 MB of ram to run one game.
I love my SP,I recommend moving to a custom ROM to increase performance
Also,it's surprisingly strong. I dropped my phone on the asphalt and it slided few meters and it's fine (few scratches) !

well u need it if you want to play real racing 3 with default graphics. had not for rr3 graphics apps and reducing it to low, that game was quite a disaster to play for more than 15 minutes.
no, im not thinking of using custom ROM. im not going to unlock my bootloader

You don't need to unlock bootloader.
You can find a list with locked bootloaders here.
Press CTRL F and type LB then search at the Stock Based roms. You will find 9 ROMs that do not require UBL

oh yeah, forgot that there are ROMs that doesn't need unlocked bootloader. but still, I dont want to use custom ROM. its not that I lost hope for this phonr that I don't want to try custom ROM, its the opposite actually. I like this phone and its stock ROM. That's why I only do minor tweaks.
Still loving mine as well. The size, build, fit, look... It's perfect for me. I get lots of comments on it.
I can overlook the minor software quirks. I figure once Sony leaves it behind I'll move over to CM which will be nice n stable by that time!

Agreed, i may also do that when sony has abandoned our phone and no longer supports it. But right now im loving this phone the way it is with all the flaws. Still an excellent rocking phone :good:
Actually, the XSP does have 1Gb of RAM. The amount that you think missing is actually dedicated to the GPU
(kinda like a PC's Graphics card with its own chip and RAM, only here we have 2 in 1 chip, both CPU and GPU)
Other than that, a very reliable review, mate!

so does that mean our GPU memory decreases now, since after 4.3 our device memory increase?
(btw not a sarcastic question, i really do want to know :good

Please tell me camera quality of SP? I'm gonna buy this tomorrow
I have 2 questions
1-how is the battery life after one year?
2-how often do you charge your phone

Yeah, the camera is decent. Pictures tend to have a lot of noise. But outdoor picture can still look very beautiful though. If u buy this consider using 3rd party camera app, like camera 360 or lenovo super camera.

1. Battery life is still not bad i think. Im an active user, i chat n play game. If i only chat, n email, n browsing, this phone can last 12+ hours. You can force it to 20+ hours too if u solely use it for chat. Mind you the provider im using has ****ty coverage so that probably factors.
2. I charge it every night. If i unplug at, say 6am, then probably i charge again at 10 or 11 pm. usually i play games at 8 or 9pm, before charge so i can reduce the battery percentage.

They reserved more for GPU in Android 4.1.2 maybe due to Sony thinking it is vital like what they do on the Xperia Z. But after custom ROMs like CM shows that their RAM is north of 800MB, Sony releases more RAM for other purposes.
Nice post, guy! Since I bought XSP I just use it for listening to music, suffering the web, and I don't like to play game on mobile (PC too ). So I think it's actually good enough for my need.
I've been using XSP for almost 1 year too, now I think the RAM is getting not enough to use, maybe it's time to buy a new phone with 2G+ RAM.

yeah, me too. been setting my eye for the new g3 or HTC e8. or maybe xperia z3 lol
So I've got my new device, and I'm so glad to be rid of my SP, I bought it around April 2014 for £250 and at the time, it sounded like a decent performer on paper. Then we got our first update, pretty buggy, then we got the news of the 4.4 update being cancelled. Then FXP moved us to a legacy device. Today, I sold my device for a measly £25 at cash converters after CeX said my loud speaker was too distorted and couldn't be accepted.
I still to this day don't understand why the phones memory management was so horrible. 1gb should be enough to get by, all I got was crashes, even on the lock screen and system ui.
I hope people who still have the SP can move on from what has been a massive let down for me. Anyone looking to pick one up for cheap, avoid it unless the disco lights draw you in like they did to me.

+1, it was mainly the lights that attracted me as well (and cheap price, I got mine from an ebay auction for £160 ). Decent hardware/beautiful design but let down by poor software, 1GB RAM is plenty. I should be getting my replacement very soon as well :fingers-crossed: .
Tbh my experience with Sony has only gotten worse with time, I remember back when I was using the Xperia X8-happy days :good:.
another unhappy customer
crappy screen, constant lag!!! my samsung s2 and nexus7 2012 blow this thing away. i have ordered a new phone and am actually looking forward to smashing this thing with a hammer!
Same here... I hate my XSP. Battery life is bad, buggy update, 4.4 cancelled... I need new phone but don't know what to buy. I am considering XZ3C but its Sony.....
Yea, the worst part I thought the phone is very good and and comes near the s4 when I bought it, because of the benchmarks. This is the last time I trust benchmarks. I have got my phone since 1 year and I think I will wait for the note 5 .
For the money the XP has very decent specs. Yet somehow no matter which ROM I use there always seem to be lag issues. My wife's S2 performs much better in that respect even though its specs are somewhat lower.
I noticed that greenifying background apps help a lot to reduce lag in day to day usage. But still whenever I do some multitasking, e.g. switching to a music app while tracking my run using runtastic, the phone lags.
It would be very interesting to find out why the SP with its more than decent specs is so laggy.
del
So
Ever since i saw this phone i was like MUST HAVE THIS
When i finally bought it last year it was huge upgrade from xperia mini pro that i has.
But as time passed i was seeing the flaws that i cant unseen.
UNRESPONSIVE DIGITALIZER OMG SO BAD - any custom rom and sometimes even on STOCK
The hw seems good, i dont know where the problem is but this phone is just too slow, i think it is because of slow internal memory.
I cant affort upgrade so......
Running RR 5.4.0 Finally working well...... (still ram problems like any other rom on this phone.....)
Yes the hardware lied to me too. I had a phone with 15k on antutu and ran smoother than xsp. I sold it yesterday. I don't have much money so I will buy a budget device like lg l bello or lenovo a6000 and they will still be better than this xsp.
yea, we all have something in common.
I'm very happy with my XSP now, but I had to do a lot of cleaning on the ROM.
Out of the box experience is bad, I must admit.
I tried custom ROMs and none of them really satisfied me. I got back to stock rooted (.207), removed all Sony apps and a lot of other system apps I don't use. Now battery life is very good and even multitasking is OK. I have ~320MB free RAM after boot. I installed Xposd to have all the nice tweaks that custom ROMs provide.
Having to tweak the phone so much to get it to work is not acceptable for an average customer, but I am happy with my XSP because I did it.
Also note that i bought my phone in July 2013 for 320€, and at that time it was a very good deal. Best hardware for the price.
So I am not unhappy at all, but totally aware that this phone is not a good deal if you stick to out of the box experience.

For someone this phone can be ok, but the digitizer problems are just a disaster for android phone like this.....
I am probably not buying sony phone again, but only reason for that is really poor software support
you guys are lucky
My xperia SP is boot loader locked by my carrier (EE) have tried every rom available to get good performance. So I'm back to stock with xposed.
Anyway 1gb of RAM should be fine, and would be fine, but the xperia SP doesn't have 1gb of RAM, 185mb is used by the baseband processor, leaving 839mb for the OS. Oh wait that isn't optimised. Darn only 256mb for the user. Great thinking Sony.
Also you give it 720p how is the CPU going to push the OS. Give me strength.
System UI works hard... Typo because the screen responsiveness has stopped. I meant hardly working.
The camera well that produces more noise than the speaker.
The aluminium "co-molded" chassis The metallic version of chipboard. The back of the phone that flexes inward and disintergrates due to the amount of times I've had to remove it to hard off the phone
These kinks that our phone has, make it for me.
The Design Connoisseur's smartphone, remind me to nail it to the wall when I'm done with it.
The phone always let me down but then I found out it was because I was using way too many modules on xposed lol.
I recently unlocked my bootloader and flashed mrcl's CM12.1 with Tangerine kernel (the first ever CM12 based kennel for the XSP and the first custom kernel I've ever used). Everything is incredibly smooth, feels like I'm playing a game at 60FPS.
Here's what I did with the kernel
CPU Governor: Smartassv2
GPU Governor: ondemand
I/O Scheduler: bfq
Here's what I did for speed
1. SD Maid Pro
2. Z3's Xperia Home (believe it or not)

I don't have any. I play some games, so I believe I would have noticed.
As for RAM, it is not that much of a problem once you've cleaned the ROM. I can play games like Asphalt 8 without any issue.
Anyway, I agree that the stock software is very bad, but the hardware is fine IMHO.
Whatever you do you will not able to make it normal. I sold it and bought a lenovo a6000. The lenovo is faster even tho it has 20k on antutu, you install apps extremely fast and you have much better display, it is not heavy as a nokia like the xsp was and overall even tho it has 20 k points on anututu it does the job better

The SP with CM12.1 gave me a score of 27000+ and everything is blazing fast. I actually compared this side by side with a Z2 and Z3 and I can say, the SP is as fast as them with the new ROMs when It comes to installation and multitasking.
Sad to see you left the XSP. But at least you're happy with your lenovo

Antutu is antutu. It relies a lot on gaming performance for instance, and the XSP is good at 3D games. It does not rely much on storage performance, and XSP is not good there.
But you say that you can't make it normal and I have to disagree with this because mine is behaving perfectly, on stock (cleaned) ROM.
Even battery life is good. (one day with quite heavy usage, Waze, Ingress, podcasts over Bluetooth...)
Good that you like your new phone anyway. My XSP will soon be 2 years old, and I think it might last another year.

Beware the enormous lag, the ROM is extremely slow, the phone wont be upgraded to Android 5, it will remain on 4.4.4 KK.
Miui 7 is really a 4.4.4 for this device. (only a few Xiaomi phones will get Lollipop)
I have a Redmi 2 for 5 months, Xiaomi iare not planning to develop Lollipop for this smartphone.

The phone is great in it's price range!
Hi! I've been using the Redmi2 4G version for a couple of months now, and I think I'm ready to give an opinion on it, to the best of my abilities.
For this price range, it's actually very tough to beat the Redmi 2, with specs. The looks are premium, you won't feel like using a cheap Chinese-build phone, it's actually well made. I have an issue with the back panel finish, it's rather slippery despite being matte. I'm pretty sure you would have researched on it's specs, so you would know, that it is THE DEAL for it's price category.
The back camera is pretty good, macro mode is specifically good, but night photography isn't that great. Front camera's performance is rather satisfactory.
Battery is pretty good, lasts a day for me, with moderate usage.
There are NO heating issues with my phone. Off course, if you will play Asphalt for a couple of hours straight, it is bound to heat up.
Display is pretty intriguing for a budget phone.
If you've used MIUI in the past, you would know of it's resemblance with the iOS. While MIUI is pleasing to the eyes, and pretty simple to use and learn, I would add, that it's best for the 2GB RAM phones. MIUI with a 1GB RAM phone sucks BIG time, so, yeah, Redmi2 has issues here, lagging, crashing apps at times.
Now, since I prefer the stock-android feel better, I have flashed mine with a pretty stable CM11 ROM.
If you're a heavy gamer, I recommend you to browse phones in higher price ranges. Redmi2 is a good everyday usage phone, but certainly NOT the one for heavy gamers.
Long cut short:- Go for it, it is pretty awesome. P.S. - I don't know if Redmi 2's Prime version(2GB RAM) is available in your country, if it is, rather go for that.
Cheers.

Really i got it attention and look for Redmi 2 cause the specs and good price tag. I use today a Quadcore cortex armv7 snapdragon 200 , but without version updates upper JB 1 (4.1.2) we waiting so far , but the factory strategically isn't willing to put lot of money for invest licences .
This situation made me take a decision to start development at point to create my own roms
I like very much about MIUI, used on my own others devices ( Defy Mb526 Atrix 4G) . One of my works development was inspired by MIUI V6 , creating my design and ported some MI apps for package
I really have interest to get one Redmi. Here just Redmi 2 it's avaliable in local market but others devices will be launched soon like MI 4

Don't expect Lollipop update for Redmi2. The Mi team isn't quite interested in giving Lollipop updates. So, that's quite a letdown.
I am facing a problem with the phone, there is poor microphone sound at other end. Anyone know any solution to this issue? Please help

Maybe the Mi Team in not interested in Redmi2, but there's something on the stage right now. This CM 12.1 release is really awesome:

Did tou try change roms? Like MIUI to CM or CM to MIUI. If yes you can change some options in development menu tried search on google. :good:

I'm one of the first buyers here in Brazil. On the launching event, the MIUI Brazilian website got bugged and fewer people was able to buy (I'm one of them, hacking the page).
I got a few complains:
the HDR Camera is laggy as hell when I take pictures.
There's no app drawer.
Sometimes I'm unable to unlock the phone, because of lag (I think). Seriously, this is annoying.
When phone gets too slow, when I go to the home screen the interface reloads itself.
Playing games like Fallout Shelter is a big problem, lagging as hell.
1GB RAM isn't enough for the phone (for me, at least) .
Sometimes the phone heats so much.
The phone has a x64 architecture, but the MIUI is 32 bits. Sounds like a waste of processing power.
There's no support forum for Brazilian users in the official boards.
No Lollipop support and no plans to receive update.
Things I liked:
Built-in security, like Antivirus and cleaning app.
The interface is so beautiful.
LTE (4G here in Brazil) for BOTH sim cards.
I can Easily switch wich sim card to make a call, send SMS or use Mobile data.
The frontal camera has a special facial recognition, telling the age, for example.
The phone charges super fast (2200 mAh battery).
It's cheap, compared to other phones. It costs less than $ 150 (at the time I bought it).
I don't think that I'm a hard user for this phone (seriously, I didn't even play so much on the phone). I know it's a mid-term smart phone. But the MIUI lag is annoying (I got crazy sometimes). I tried to use the beta versions of the MIUI rom, tried to use performance scripts, Greenify, other camera apps.
Now I'm using a customized CM 12.1 for the device, to see if I'm able to use easily the phone, like driving in my car, got lost and easily open Waze or Google Maps to see where I need to go. Actually, I need to stop and park the car, clean current apps (some times reboot) to properly use.
nice reply @juliovedovatto
i have for several days a 2GB RAM / 16 GB ROM version and I can say that I have none of the below mentioned lagging problems.
What else is different in my setup is that I am already on MIUI 7 developer.
I should admit also that I did not play any game.
Coming from an Iphone I am kind of used of not having an app drawer and MIUI 7 is pretty eye candy...
Right now I am considering if CM (11 or 12) are worth the try... I think the main gain will be a battery life increase (at least from my other experience with CM), but I cannot see any other benefits, at least for me. I should study a bit more.
aaaah... battery lasts ~1 day. less if you use a lot the screen... max so far for me is 1 1/2 days

If you want to try the CM roms, I need to advise you: see what model your phone is. Actually the CM roms supports only HM2014811-HM2014813. The compiled baseband maybe does not work for you Redmi model.
There's a chance of you apply the rom and it does not have support for LTE networks. Like my case, my phone is HM2014819 and I discovered this misfortune today, after reading tons of posts and articles and flashing 10 times my phone
The good news that the performance of CM is far superior than the MIUI roms.
I own a 2014813
nevertheless the battery life i see as the main gain of CM vs MIUI. Is there something else worthing, I mean like really making a difference?

Thanks @juliovedovatto for your feedback, have good experience and content for fixes report.
The Xiaomi Team recently replied me about issues that have been causing, lags and this report turn around the device performance, it's needed constant evolution to directing it in fixes updates. All of Redmi owner's can do it mentioning in Xiaomi support channels
They also informed that the objectives for now is update for MI7 and we will be wait this results!

For example, when Skype is running on the background, it disconnects itself (and its icon disappears from notification line) and when I click its icon again, it opens as if I freshly opened it, loading everything again. It was locked in recent apps so it won't stop. But it will. Even when nothing else is running. Sometimes when I have browser and few other apps running at once (not many, two or three other apps) and a music player, sometimes the music randomly stops - it is killed for RAM even if it's locked (i absolutely hate this on MIUI but fortunately it happens quite rarely now, perhaps the last weekly update messed something up again).
MIUI is extremely RAM-hungry. I mean - if Windows XP can run on 512 MB RAM device and be perfectly usable even for complex work, what is this supposed to be? And with Cyanogen on my Redmi 2, there is still buttload of free RAM when I have several apps opened just like before on MIUI. Currently I'm running CM12 Lollipop ROM made by Zwiliev which I installed today, when I finally got tired of MIUI. And since some V6 build, Mass Storage disappeared so there is no sane way to connect a phone as a flash drive. For me, Cyanogen solved all those things, and many more that I don't feel like writing down here.
On the other hand, the Redmi 2 itself is a decent phone. With very nice headphone output quality - the best of all phones I've ever had. The camera is pretty good, too. The display is beautiful - i thought that it is nuts to have 1024xSomething resolution on a device this small but it really looks very good. And MIUI has in-built root capability, at least. Wifi is powerful enough to have signal where my previous smartphone was already out of range. Replaceable battery and memory card slot. The hardware is indeed very very good for those money so if you don't mind using Cyanogen, buy it
Yay, this is gonna be my tenth post so finally I can send feedback to ROM developers (AT LONG LAST! WHICH PORK HEAD'S IDEA WAS THIS?)
Been running my Axon on and off for a week (not yet my daily driver due to being lazy with backing up my old phone)... Anyway one thing I have noticed is that the phone seems to be always running at over 50% RAM usage. If I launch one app - or anything else - and then clear all it will revert to running at a variable 1.6 to 2GB of 'available RAM.
Is this normal?
A picture often helps! Sorry that it links off to PhotoBucket - I don't know how to get it to launch in the XDA image window.

Axon 7
Galaxy S3 for comparison
Since 4GB is supposed to be 'wayyy' more than enough (as reviews on the OnePlus3 naysayers would have me believe) I don't expect to have an out of the box phone running at more than 50% RAM usage - this doesn't make sense to my non-technical self. On my i9300 (Galaxy S3) I run CyanogenMod 13 and that OS runs at 260MB of RAM vs 850MB on the Axon! Can someone explain?
I'm running the B3 update but had this before I applied it.
I am having some other connectivity issues and am considering sending this unit back for exchange. It's just hard to tell when I don't know what 'normal' is for this phone.
I want to love this phone. I just need it to love me!
Thanks guys! :good:
I need to restart my Axon 7 (A2017G) every two days or I will get a laggy UI, it's a ram problem too. So we're probably in the same boat. I hope they'll fix it in the next update (which comes after the bootloader unlock thingy if I'm right?)

Yes bootloader unlock is being currently worked on, then an update after that.
RAM management in Android isn't about a predefined amount. You're using way more with the Axon 7 than the S3 because there is way more available. If it's there why not use it to get a better experience ?
Altyough, i haven't noticed this laggy ui issue...

I agree with this MiFavor is crap when it runs for a longer time. I gets laggy on the second day. One has to reboot to get a smooth system again.
While on my old phone with CM and 4GB Ram it stays blazing fast after a week without reboot.
We can only hope CM isn't to far away.
So, reading between the lines here, you guys. Think it's software rather than hardware?
I'm just building an evidence base to warrant an exchange. Although the prospect of a two month wait leaves me reluctant.

It sure is software. 4gb ram is more than enough. Really. It's just that MIfavor likes ram and eats it like chocolate.

I guess what I really was getting at is how likely is it that the physical RAM is faulty rather than the software being RAM hungry. I ask as it seems my phone is a bit flaky in a few areas and I wonder if it's just like a b-grade item.
But take all the points on board that most likely software. How would I be able to rule out any physical RAM antics?

Look at the chipset. It's an snapdragon 820 which specifies the use of LPDDR4 dual channel.
OEM's usually receive a list of tested and recommended RAM chips from the chipset manufacturer.
No OEM who's right in their mind is going to use cheap RAM for a device that needs to survive at least 3 years of usage. Also less likely is that low powered ram is going to become faulty in a time frame under 10 years.
I plan and build enterprise servers on daily basis. I can a sure you it's software RAM management that is the issue.
Okay cool. Thanks for the clarification.
One technical issue down just two others to resolve!
Sorry for digging the grave, but all I want to say is that even today my Axon 7 with Android Nougat is having memory leak after 2 to 3 days usage. I can't switch between apps properly without them crashing and having to restart completely. But there is good news. According to somebody from ZTE, when the Axon 7 is getting Android 8 (Oreo), though only the US model has been mentioned, the MiFavor is going to be removed and the OS is going to be more or less stock-ish. Which would also mean that hopefully the memeory leakage will be almost gone. Also, hopefully, the EU model will get the same experience. 4GB RAM and memory leak is a bad joke.
i used to have the same issues and what i did is i switched to other launcher instead of using MiFavor... and it solved me lag features and i probably need to reboot my phone once a while when i got unresponsive / slow phone wake... then it back to normal again. But again its still doesn't solve my phone battery drain issue... my phone only can last me 6am to 10pm with normal usage (surfing internet, wifi, youtube, emails, whatsapp and reading novels... no bluetooth and no gaming and no song played).
I'm currently using Lawnchair Launcher and even with Lawnfeed plugin allowing the Google Now page from the left, my phone is very responsive and rarely needs a restart. Appcrash is quite rare.
I recommend Lawnchair if you would like a functional and close to stock (but improved) experience.
I used to use Smart Launcher Pro but that started getting a bit fat, as most apps do over time. Feature bloat always slows them down as they get developed.

Have you tried completely reinstalling the system? It fixed my drain and also some random reboots that I couldn't get rid of even by updating. Just install Lineage (don't forget abt the universal bootloader and modem), then boot it up and use it a couple minutes (if you want, you can check if you have that same battery drain in Lineage), then follow a guide to go back to stock (if A2017G, I made one; if A2017U, you can use DrakenFX's back to stock files).
In april i purchased a huawei mate 8 nxt-l29. Definitely a step up from a galaxy s5 like 1000 steps up. One of the best devices ive ever used. Recently earlier today as of writing this, i switched from the huawei mate 8 on metropcs to the samsung galaxy s7 on sprint network. It took me a grand total of 2 hours of owning the s7 to hate the hell out of it. Without even installing any of my own apps i use commonly, like steam or firefox or setting up any of the apps on there. I returned the thing for the first time because it overheated in the settings menu and shut off three times. I went back to sprint immediately and exchanged it for a fresh s7 sitting next to me now, doing nothing, screen off, overheating as i type. There are no downloads queued, setup is complete, it should be idling right now. But no, it is constantly hot to the touch.
The main reason i hate it are as follows:
1. Heat
2. Lag
3. Freezes
4. Slow
5. Unresponsive
6. Millions of apps i cannot disable.
The first reason being heat is why this thing is awful. My mate 8 never heats up when idling, in fact, ive never caught my mate 8 above 55C and my mate 8 idles at around 29-32C. This thing idles at 63C and heats up to 72C. It does not stop doing random crap. even after disabling everything and turning on the performance inhibiting mode, still stuck at high temperatures, screen off, left alone for enoguh time to idle.
Next, the lag is unbearable. In proprietary menus, such as the entirety of the settings app, there are microstutters to complete freezes. Theres so much buffering done with this phone, having come straight from the mate 8, this is unacceptable.
Compared to my mate 8 I tested installing facebook, instagram, steam and one of those massive games with downloads in app, this one being Dungeon Hunter 5.
I want to disable a system app: App list laod time 10 seconds
i click on the system app i want to disable: ( google drive) load time 3 seconds
i want to click disable and confirm i want it disabled (google drive) Load time: 5 seconds.
Uninstall proprietary sprint app: Load time 4 seconds, Uninstall time 15-20 seconds.
Uninstalling dungeon Hunter 5: Load time: 1st effort froze the phone, second time also froze, third time it worked but took a whopping 73 seconds.
Compared to my s7 I tested installing facebook, instagram, steam and one of those massive games with downloads in app, this one being Dungeon Hunter 5.
Open settings: Load time 1 second
Open apps: App list load time 2 seconds
Click on app i want to disable (google drive) : Load time less than 1 second. .63 seconds to be exact.
Disabling app (google drive): Load time less than 1 second. .57 to be exact
Uninstalling Dungeon hunter 5: Load time 3 seconds
Galaxy s7 first day: First S7 froze 3 times with massive microstutters, second S7 after swapping has frozen twice. Force restart was the only fix.
Mate 8: Has frozen once, but it was my fault. Never has frozen without it not being my fault.
Sidenote: If my S7 freezes on not just day 1 but hour 1 it cannot be my fault yet. Im just trying to load my apps on there at that point.
Compared to my mate 8 the galaxy s7 is much slower at opening apps and navigating through its own menus.
My Mate 8's settings menu is quick and speedy, it takes longer to start a stopwatch timer than it takes to load a menu in the mate 8 settings app.
The S7 you cant just throw the stopwatch away. It's too slow to navigate and even makes me feel like the settings screen has frozen when trying to load my apps list, scan for wifi, open the developer options menu and almost freezes when im at the apps list menu and load the system apps.
Unresponsiveness is never a problem on the mate 8 actually.
Galaxy S7 however has not responded in multiple areas. Screen taps missed, fingerprint scanner doesnt work sometimes and is also extremely picky you have to be DIRECTLY on that button. Not off by a single hair for that scanner to work. The response time on the screen is actually 6 times longer than the mate 8 too. 5ms on the mate 8, 30ms on s7.
The mate 8 being internationally unlocked at purchase only has google apps loaded on it. The s7 being a carrier phone from sprint has 6 sprint apps on it and a billion other things i hate. I don't like sports myself so having to spend forever getting all 10 sports apps off the thing is a pain. Especially since 3 of them cannot be removed, only disabled, thus eating up storage, 42MB 33MB and 16MB. Nothing too bad but still annoying. The thing also comes loaded with samsung's useless app list of about 10 or something apps. Most of which cannot be disabled or uninstalled such as samsung push. The rest is just.... other junk i dont use but found shocking to see on here. Facebook is now preloaded and untouchable. Cannot be uninstalled only disabled. I use a web browser personally because it saves battery and you dont need the messenger app either. Uber being useless because i own my own vehicle was also preloaded, but i could uninstall that. Other than the radio app, i couldnt uninstall only disable some apps. And the phone being only 32 gigs of storage on its onboard memory was eating up already 10 gigs of storage. with 22 left usable for me.
Other things id like to pick at are the screen. I cannot tell the difference between this phone's screen and the mate 8's. The fidelity is no better in comparison. Colors are slightly more vivid, but not enough to overlook this phone's numerous problems. Couldn't even use google maps to navigate home on the S7 from the sprint store due to the heat.
TL;DR
Doesn't compare to the smartphone king that is the mate 8. Feels more like a toy that burns your hand and pockets off. I guess thats why its waterproof so it can be cooled in your soft drink at dinner time. Very slow, very laggy, very unresponsive in comparison. I suppose it would be acceptable if it turns out i didnt have a better user experience. Im glad sprint offers refunds on their service because this phone is quite terrible. Sprint is too. Less than 1MBPS on their unlimited data plan. Rockin speed dude.
Man I can imagine pretty well what you're talking about. Before the mate 8 I used to own a Xperia Z5 (my brother has it now)... That SoC is burning almost all the time and is a quite annoying
Not a fanboy here but is in fact a shame all Samsung flagships still suffers from lags (and explosions too lol)
SD810 was an amazing heater that didn't burn anyone's pants but surely it burnt everyone's pockets
Yea, i forgot to mention that the phones ram management was awful. With the proprietary software running all at the same time i had a whopping 1.1 gigs of ram to use for my personal apps. It was a disgrace. 750 dollars for a POS like that. They should pay me to take it.
Just wanna say tho. The screen is the downfall of the phone. That was my first 2k screen device and wow. Battery drainer problem raiser there. It couldnt run tiny tower wothout lagging. My mate 8 was soaring through it. I will now avoid snapdragon and samsung. I own zero samsung products. Even the ssd in my pc is Sandisk. Samsung needs to stop. Ive had two of their phones and hated both. S5 and S7 both sucked. Heat issues and battery problems. Disappointing. Camt wait to get my money back. Also dont switch to Sprint my god was it bad. 1mbps download speed average.
Got SGS Note 4, you can find my topic also on the forum why I switched between them. Fuk samsung, never ever again
wow, after reading through this thread i feel VERY lucky coming from a nexus 5 and switching to a mate 8, happy on both counts!

Its nice to hear people have the same experiences. Usually when i write fully thought out reviews with high detail i get ridiculed. Thanks for taking time to read this stuff so far guys. Appreciate it a lot
I had a Note 2 which I used for almost 3 years, until a year and half back. I then tried a windows phone, then 2 mid range budget phones. Also tried a borrowed Samsung galaxy for few days. Coming from something like Note 2, you dont have too many choices that will make you feel like it is an upgrade. Now got the mate 8, and it is here to stay like my Note 2! I really don't see many phones out today, there which will give you an upgrade impression from this one.
I glad that I got the Mate 8. It leaves almost everything else behind.
The battery is amazing, I have been using like crazy all day and night, and i recharge only next day! Easily 8+ hrs SOT, I charge before 20%.
They have really optimized this one for good battery. I am now attempting to take battery management to the next level by bringing the protected app list to almost zero, and using tasker in parallel to keep the notifications coming in 15-30m intervals.
The Mate 9 is apparently 20% more battery efficient with its more power Mali GPU. Thank god we ditch the mid range Mali T-880 for what power the Mali G71 MP8 can withold. According to their spec reveal the CPU itself is also 15% more efficient. The display will continue to be 1080p i suppose. Some of these shots display benchmarks performed at the 1080 resolution. I honestly do not believe a 2560x1440 screen res is worth it on a 6 inch screen. More like 60 inch. Cant wait for that upgrade. Hopefully its as smooth as this.
Wow, sucks to have your experience :/
I had no problems with my €150 Galaxy Ace 2 thanks to some great roms. I didn't stay long on stock.
My wife just moved back to Iphone after using a Note 4. She doesn't want any android again (even if I try to convince her samsung =/= android). But we are both enjoying my Honor 8 now.
Glad you guys still enjoy the mate 8 especially compared to other high end devices. Gives me good hopes about my Honor 8
We'll be loving thr mate 9 sure enough. Makes me want to get my hands dirty and hop in the kitchen to cook up roms for the mate 9 when it drops
I used to own a samsung galaxy mega 6.3 inch, first phablet and a good one...and the only samsung device i am positive about.
From that point i went to a huawei P7 wich was a good and nice phone when it was released, but after a year or so it already lost the game so i upgraded to a huawei P8 combined with a huawei mediapad M2 10.0 when the tablet was released, both outstanding devices but the P8 was stolen at a festival so i bought a Mate 8 and i really love it.
Now owning the M2 tab, Mate 8 and a Nexus 5x, all great devices.
I had a few samsung devices, and friends and family too... From my expierence compared to other devices, touchwiz was unstable, all kind of dumb bugs, low quality battery wich dies fast (i saw it in the battery life and charge time), all apps they bring that no one uses lol. The only positive samsung had was the camera (wich in this time is no more cause of the other OEMs), and the ability and available support of mods and roms... This is one of the big reasons people on xda bought a samsung. Its a shame that samsung gets so ****ty these days, but they have always been ****ty if you think about it..
I dont even want to buy a washing maschine or a fridge from samsung lol, i know that thing will fail on me in less then 2 years.
