hi everyone,
I've seen something really strange with my wife's v20.
The data icon (4g-3g etc) is always shown in notification even if data is disabled or even if wifi is on.
I thought there was some kind of download booster like Samsung's, but didn't find out anything like this.
I Searched almost everywhere without finding anything.
Only one sim card, dev option: Agressive Wifi switch for cellular data is off(it's in french so in english I don't know the real translation), Switch to mobile data is off.
Does anyone has a clue for me? or a solution?
As the icon shows I don't know if there's a download pending or running in background and her data plan is really limited.
Thanks to all.

Hey i know ive asked quite a lot of questions in the past but here i am with more.
1) I was wondering if there was an app to turn you data on and off so you switch from wifi to 3g data
2) I was also wondering how you can tell what your usage is mabye an app that doesn't count wifi as well.
There is an HTC Widget to turn the main radio off on the CDMA version. On my phone it is under:
Press "+" from the home screen-->HTC Widget-->Settings-->Mobile Network
On the CDMA phones that shuts down both voice and data. If you have a GSM version, i am not sure what it will do.
On the GSM version, if you just want to turn mobile data on and off but leave the phone "on", you can hold down the power button to bring up the "Phone Options" menu, and one of the options "Mobile network" - press this and it will toggle mobile data off and on.
Regards,
Dave

There's a couple of good apps for turning data on/off. The one I prefer is APNDroid as it's got a notification icon that can be displayed in the taskbar to indicate whether data is on or off. Placing a shortcut on your home screen make it easy to change whether data is active.
The app I use for monitoring data is NetCounter which is easy to use and clear to understand.
I recently used them both on a trip to Dubai as I wanted to prevent data roaming charges. APNDroid deactivated the data connection and at the end of the week long stay, NetCounter was showing zero data usage during the trip.
Thanks im also abit worried about all the ads that come with apps or games do they use much data and when an app like taskiller shows them still running does that mean they are using data?
And if i got my phone a week ago will it have the latest and fastest rom?
There's an HTC widget that allows you to switch wifi on and off, thus swapping from 2/3g to wifi. Also, take a look at Y5, its good for managing when you have wifi on / off.
Florida.
Ok ill have a look i was more worried about apps running in the background as ive found that when you press the home button they don't actuallly exit.
I suggest that what you really need is Netsentry. This will monitor the traffic on all the Hero network interfaces (usb, Wi-Fi, 2G/3G) and warn you when any particular interface hits a user defined limit. It will also "self-reset" the counters according to a schedule that you define.
For example, say you are on Orange with their miserly 500mb data limit, and you're billing cycle starts on 1st on the month, you could set up Netsentry to warn you when you get to say 475mb, and automatically reset the counter on the 1st of every month.
I'm sure there are other apps that do something similar, or even better, but Netsentry seems to work well enough for me.

Dave
Does anyone know of an app that would help me find out what application/process is causing my 3G connection to turn on randomly...... a lot?
I've gone through all the options i can, to stop any program that runs updates (Twitter, Facebook, Stocks, ActiveSync, Internet time etc) but the connection STILL randomly connects >.<
Any help appreciated!

Thank you for asking that.
Finally someone else who find that's completely "censored".
I give you official answers from my phone provider:
It's normal. To avoid receiving a big bill, you should buy a pack data download, so if it randomly connects, you are safe. Other users reporting the same and its normal and the data pack is perfect solution- No comments
I give you answer from HTC support:
Go into settings/submenu/megasubmenu... whatever, and check "phone usage" n(which only tells the calls usage by the way, not the data)- no comments
I give you answer from forums users:
Yes either try this wonderful application: x,y,z to know the usage : (its paying ones).
Or completely mess the configuration to connect to internet via your HTC HD2 "quietly brilliant" device (very quietly)...
Ok you understand, you're more or less screwed and have to accept that complete scam.
And apparently we are 2 in the world now, to find that's an essential feature, missing (another one).
Ho and to actually diagnose which one is using gprs... Hm we can't even control to say "NO never activate DATA", because the button automatically turns on (quietly stupid).
This cab allows you to disable all data connections...enjoy
My phone was starting data connections all the time when I first flashed a cooked ROM and had it set up with the SFR Always On data connection... On my stock SFR ROM it was called Full Internet but it used exactly the same settings but I didn't have the problem so I just tried changing the name from Always One back to Full Internet and it worked strangely enough... I don't know if that can help but it might be worth a shot .
I don't have an unlimited data plan so I normally turn my 3G on and off manually when I need to. But today my 3G icon keeps coming up on the tab even when i have the settings as off. I checked my data usage from my carrier and it is indeed eating up data. I've tried restarting the phone but it's still the same.
Any idea of why this is happening and how to resolve this?
Thanks in Advance

try APNdroid, you can find it in the Market.

If you have your data disabled then it shouldn't be coming on. Check your permissions to see if you have an app on your phone that has permission to mess with your network settings.
Sent from my cm6.1 Aria using XDA App
APNDroid would work for your situation very well, however, I've had problems sending MMS's when I've had APNDroid installed (even with "enable MMS" checked).
Another option that would probably work very well is DroidWall (on the market-free). It's a firewall for your mobile data and WiFi, customizable for each allowing individual programs through. A widget on your homescreen turns it on or off. You could have it set so programs can always use WiFi, yet mobile data is blocked unless you turn the widget to "off". That wy no programs can actually transmit anything even if they have permissions set in the program. DroidWall has final say of what leaves.
I downloaded 3GWatchdog free, and was so impressed I purchased the Pro version for ~$2.50. The Pro version allows you to see specifically what program has used mobile data, and how much. That, along with DroidWall, will allow me to completely customize and control my mobile data while still retaining as much functionality as possible.
Ok Well I downloaded both APNDroid and Watchdog and now I can't even turn on 3G. I just uninstalled both of them and turn my phone off and on still no 3G.
Thanks anyway guys. I getting really close to giving up on Android and moving to the iphone. Every other day there's a new problem with this mobile OS and I always have to download an app rectify something that shouldn't be happening in the first place. It's getting ridiculous.

Did you turn your mobile data back on before uninstalling APNdroid? If not, you might want to look into that
No offense, but I dont think its Android that is the problem. Have you taken the time to fully understand the phone? I havent had a hitch since I got this phone. Once you reinstall APNdroid, enable your data, and then remove the app. If you would like to manually turn off your mobile data then do this menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks>uncheck data enabled
If you dont want to go through the hassle of that, download an app to do it for you. Quick settings can do it. Open quick settings>menu>preference>statusbar shortcut *To access quick settings from status bar* Then hit back>menu>customize>move up mobile data(APN) from hidden settings. Then all you have to do is click on or off for mobile data.
You can also download various widgets that can do this for you without having to go into quick settings. APNdroid being one of them. I use Widgetsoid.
Hi,
So i own a nexus 7 3g and use the t-mobile data service and i am hoping you guys can help me with these random data drops i get.
I will bring my tablet to work, put it in my book bag and drive to work, and when i get to work, the data signal is gone and its disconnected from t-mobile.
The only way i know how to get data back is restarting the tablet.
I was hoping there might be another way to get data back without rebooting, or find a way for this to stop happening altogether so i dont lose data randomly like this while i travel or leave the device unattended for a few hours.
I have never owned any GSM devices besides the nexus 7 so i am not to familiar with troubleshooting or any little tinkering i need to do with a GSM device/sim card etc.
So any ideas/help will be awesome and gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

There maybe problem because of apps like juicedefender which disables network in ideal/sleep mode ,So unistalling such apps may help you , BTW Are you sure network is not an issue ? Because even i have 3G Nexus 7 , i am also facing connection issue, My networks disables automaticaly anytime, when i use Wifi it disables my Sim network connection, It means i cant use internet without wifi though its 3G model I have reported the same to my nearest Asus service centre they looking on it , They told me there will be setting for data dropping , If i able to find its solution then will PM you.

Hi
Thanks for the helpful tips. I'm pretty sure i don't have any battery saving apps, i deleted the few i did have.
I don't have any network issues. It seems it only turns off when in traveling around with it. Its really weird, and i am confused as to why it just goes away only when im traveling with it.
It does get disconnected from the internet when on wifi at home and stuff, but i still have bars in the signal icons moving and showing me that i am connected to t-mobile service.
But when i am dealing with this issues and have no data, the icon is empty and it tells me i have no service.
Maybe just toggling airplane mode might work, ill try that next time.
i tried toggleing airplane mode, no luck.
It may be the connection, but is frustrating i have to reboot every time just to get data back. Even if i toggle data in mobile data it wont work.
I have the Verizon G2. On previous phones, after I connect to wifi, i'm used to the 3g/4g logo disappearing from the notifications bar because the phone is smart enough to disable mobile data when wifi is working. I thought this was a standard stock feature.
I'm noticing on this device that those logos remain. I have a really poor signal in my office building so it switches from 3g-4g all day long. Obviously I can manually disable mobile data, or even use some apps to disable it automatically I'm sure, if that's necessary. Does anyone have a better understanding of how this works than I do?
I actually haven't noticed much impact to battery life so I'm not sure if it's something that even needs to be manually disabled? It's just confusing me why it would even bother trying to find 3g/4g signals when wifi is working and connected.
Edit: Well this convinced me to finally spend 5 minutes learning how to use Tasker and I set up a really basic profile to turn data on/off depending on my wifi connection. I'm still not sure how necessary it is but maybe I'll compare battery life with it enabled or not enabled.
Im having the same problem. Is Tasker an app u purchased? Have u noticed any difference in battery life? Thanks

data has to be on because that's how sms and mms are sent. Nothing changed between phones other than the images are showing up on this one.
