[Q] T Mobile 3g Random Data Drop - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
So i own a nexus 7 3g and use the t-mobile data service and i am hoping you guys can help me with these random data drops i get.
I will bring my tablet to work, put it in my book bag and drive to work, and when i get to work, the data signal is gone and its disconnected from t-mobile.
The only way i know how to get data back is restarting the tablet.
I was hoping there might be another way to get data back without rebooting, or find a way for this to stop happening altogether so i dont lose data randomly like this while i travel or leave the device unattended for a few hours.
I have never owned any GSM devices besides the nexus 7 so i am not to familiar with troubleshooting or any little tinkering i need to do with a GSM device/sim card etc.
So any ideas/help will be awesome and gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

There maybe problem because of apps like juicedefender which disables network in ideal/sleep mode ,So unistalling such apps may help you , BTW Are you sure network is not an issue ? Because even i have 3G Nexus 7 , i am also facing connection issue, My networks disables automaticaly anytime, when i use Wifi it disables my Sim network connection, It means i cant use internet without wifi though its 3G model I have reported the same to my nearest Asus service centre they looking on it , They told me there will be setting for data dropping , If i able to find its solution then will PM you.

Hi
Thanks for the helpful tips. I'm pretty sure i don't have any battery saving apps, i deleted the few i did have.
I don't have any network issues. It seems it only turns off when in traveling around with it. Its really weird, and i am confused as to why it just goes away only when im traveling with it.
It does get disconnected from the internet when on wifi at home and stuff, but i still have bars in the signal icons moving and showing me that i am connected to t-mobile service.
But when i am dealing with this issues and have no data, the icon is empty and it tells me i have no service.
Maybe just toggling airplane mode might work, ill try that next time.

i tried toggleing airplane mode, no luck.
It may be the connection, but is frustrating i have to reboot every time just to get data back. Even if i toggle data in mobile data it wont work.

Small bug/issue with wifi.

When I'm using wifi at home, every couple of minutes the HSDPA and HSUPA arrows appear between the wifi and signal strength bars. As far as I know they shouldn't appear when wifi is connected. The problem is that when the arrows appear, I loose all data connection until they go away.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks
So basically when you connect to wifi, then you still have the H+ icon at the top of the screen, however, there isn't suppose to be any data arrows there?
I was wondering about this because on the Evo once you connect to wifi, the 3G icon goes disappears.

Right. I see that H+ on mine too, even after connecting to wifi. It shouldn't be there!!! And I think this is one possible reason why I keep losing my wifi on this phone every other minute, and keeps switching to H.

I am also experiencing this. It is frustrating because it is the only issue that I am having with the phone, but I am on wifi for probably 90% of the day. It is annoying when it happens. Usually turning wifi off and then on again fixes it. Still, I should not have to do this.
Yeah the H shouldn't be there either I think, but the problem is when you see the arrows under the H. Like the phone is trying to download data through HSPA while on wifi but fails at both.
BTW, as many have said, the phone is working flawlessly. This is the only issue I'm having. Probably DG can fix this!
Just got off the phone with ATT and they told me that even though you're on wifi, some data is still carried over where it goes towards your data plan...wtf! I definitely don't like this one bit.
I called them because I was connected to wifi but on my att online account, I noticed that my data usage had increased.
I'm about to get off work so I had to rush while I was on the phone with them. When I get home I'm going to give them another call so that I can better understand this crap. I have no clue why our wifi usage should count towards our data plans.

Not to mention, even if I accepted the fact that they were still putting some amount of data over my data plan even while on wifi... why am I losing all network connection to my phone while this data transfer occurs... Something is definitely not right here.
It seems to be a common issue, there are a ton of threads about this on the Motorola support forums for this phone. I'm having the same issue, it's horribly worse if you are on a call. Whenever I am on a call and phone phone is on wifi and I try to do anything web related it take a long time to load any data, most of the time it won't and it will kick off my wifi and go back to 3g data.
I'm giving it a few more days to see if Motorola replies about this issue, otherwise I'm gonna have to take both atrix's back... this is a pretty big deal breaker for me.

I love these posts because it is also my situation. Check your data and make sure it's not being hemorrhaged like mine was (50MB/DAY!!).
Here is how to stop all data: go into wifi settings, then hit that menu button and settings, change it to never sleep. then go into all your programs and hit never update, manual, whatever. PAIN IN THE ASS but hey...thats the Atrix for you. I returned mine.
When I'm on wifi it shows the H but the arrows don't light up, if I lose the wifi connection it won't load webpages or the market so I think its been working for me

[Q] Losing data connection when switching between Wi-Fi and Cellular Data

Hi All,
Long time follower, first time poster..
I have a very annoying issue with my Nexus 4(4.2.1 and rooted on Tmob).
I use wi-fi connection at home and work and in-between I switch to HSPA or should I say, I was able to..
Lately I have been seeing that If I leave the Wi-Fi area, the phone doesn't switch to cellular data and the connection gets lost.
Switching to airplane mode and back brings it back most of the time but it's really annoying having to do so..
I did find an issue #40514 on the google android code page( code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40514)
Tried the suggested work arounds like "Auto Network" setting and it didn't seem to help..also have tmob in the APN settings. Still the only thing that works for me is toggling the airplane mode.
This happened to me once on my previous Gnex but with N4, it started to happen all the time.
Does anyone have a better solution to this issue?
Thanks
Oz
even I face the same issue with this new Paranoid 4.1.2 ROM for Atrix 2. I've noticed only one ROM gave me consistent data 24/7, it was from same dev altered his NUMA B2.
But other than that, this has been a repeating problem in all ROMS. Data stays on for hours without issue but suddenly drops and never comes up, other than air plane toggle. Somebody mentioned it is with the network and trust me it is not..
but I'm also eagerly waiting for a solution

Yea, at first I thought it has something to do with rooting but apparently it is happening with non-rooted phones as well..Google needs to address this issue..

Just throwing in my two cents; I starred the threads that I *think* are related on the google tracker. My experience is like this:
I start up Sirius on my phone before leaving home (On wifi)
Driving to the end of my development and then lose WIFI which in turn turns my 3g/4g gray for about a half mile
Picks 3g/4g back up eventually
As I'm driving to work if I end up picking up any open WIFI spots that have a login, once that happens I lose 3g/4g again then have to either wait till that access point is out of range or just turn off my WIFI before data will pick up again
It's pretty annoying; probably going to have to create a tasker profile to turn off wifi when leaving the house and back on when I get home.
Same problem on an LG F6 Optimus
I just got a brand new LG Optimus F6 and I'm noticing this same issue. The phone is stock and runs 4.1.2
Anyone found a solution?
the issue continue in n4 with 4.4?

[Q] Data connection problem .

I have bought my Lg G2 last saturday. I'm still researching the phone and so far it's great except one thing. Problem is when the phone is removed from charging it refuses to establish a data connection. This happened to me twice and every time in the morning after the charging.
Solution is restarting the phone. If not, it just won't connect . When i go to the settings it is turn on, but there are no arrows at the top of the screen and it doesn't work. Otherwise , after the restart it works normally all day. I keep turning it on and of and it works fine.
I think it is a software problem, since I have a network signal, but I'm not sure.
Is anyone having a similar problem?
Thanks

No, I have read about that today , but as a solution for a samsung g3 . I will try in the morning, because after the restart it works perfectly all day . Do you think it is a software problem?
Are you using different charger and cable or the originals that came with the phone?
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda premium
Same here. Toggle don't work but restart works OK.

I'm using original usb cable and charger, but with extender , because of the electricity. Phone is from England, and I'm from Serbia .
After the last night charging I had the same problem, but this time I used toggle between Airplane and Data . After that everything worked fine.

Hi, i noticed this too since a couple of days... Trying To figure out what the issue is ( in possession for 2 Weeks)
I can re-establish data connection without reboot by clicking in select automatically in network operators in data /mobile networks settings. So it will reregister on the network.
Guess we need to notify lg about this issue/bug for a fix.
my sprint g2, will drop data connection occasionally when switching from wifi to 3g or from lte to 3g. so i would say there is some kind of real issue here
Same problem after rooting
I'm having the same issue, the data connection drops, mostly after going into stand-by. The problem started to occur a few days later after rooting the LG G2. I have tried the temporary solutions above with succes, but there is no final solution to it. I wonder if the device intentionally starts to brick itself after rooting, I heard the LG G2 has a lot of root checkers (says the noob).
Anyone contacted LG yet? Or tried flashing their device?
I'm having a similar issue with my G2.
After switching off wifi, data won't start.
I have to click search network then it would go on.
Would it be something to do with the modem?
When i had my Samsung gs2, I had problems with random dropouts, then I found a way to flash new modem software and all worked fine with better reception and no dropouts.
I sometimes loose network connection completely (no service) when switching from 3g to 2g or vice versa, no issue with 4g what I've seen.
Though I have this BBS, looks very alarming I must say, does anyone have similar to this:https://db.tt/aKsiw0Xe

issue fixed
hi after a recent software update (mine was D80210c-HKG-XX, build number JDQ39B,...) the data connection issue is solved for me (also made a LG support case).
But my NFC funtcion stopped working now...
Same here. Ive got this issue after rooting the G2. It cannot connect to mobile data after Im away from wifi connection. Switch airplain mode on and off helps but its annoying even if u have more email account. Another problem after rooting was freezing and restarting phone after mouse connection. But next day was everything fine and its untill today. Have anyone similar issues with custom roms?

I am rooted running Digital Dream on a Verizon VS980 with 12B radio installed. I loose data or go down to 1x all the time. I have to toggle airplane mode or reboot to re-establish 4G connection. Is there something else I can do. I love the phone but the data thing is annoying. Is the antenna really that bad in these phones?

I think and Im almost 100% sure that this must be only software problem, because when the data is runnig, it runs fast and stable. No additional inconvenience.I hope next upgrade (update) will fixt it. However Im really surprising that u have same problem on custom ROM. Im using only airplain mode to switch the data on. I needent to restart device, but it is really really annoying.
Hi everyone, as I wrote before got data connection issue while getting away from wifi. The data cannot start automatic. I found out that it happens only if GSM/ WCDMA /LTE automatic connection is selected in the settings. When I adjust GSM/ WCDMA automatic connection - everything is ok. I was trying automatic switching and runs perfect. So if u dont use LTE, better say if the WCMDA is enought for u, it can be less annoying solution as manualy turn on/ off airplain mode. I hope next update fix this issue at all. Have nice day.

It seems better (still not perfect) I wiped everything including formatting the system partition and re-installed... But thanks for the replay!
Also, I don't have to reboot ... toggleing airplane mode takes care of it, i was just saying reboot is another alternative.

This is definitely a software problem, but I have no idea how to fix it... when I first rooted everything was fine (I was on Malladus). Then I went to CM-based ROM and it was still working well.... then I updated my PRL (*228) and things started going south and I haven't been able to get it back working since.
I'm thinking of going back to Stock and starting over from scratch to see if I can fix the problem.... if anyone has an update on this issue I would greatly appreciate some advice!
potential fix for this issue?
Hi everyone. I had this phone for about 3 months. and the data connection thing has been annoying for me.. So the problem to start off with is at first I dont seem to get LTE at all during the first 2 days. I found online that the 3845#*802# or *#*#4636#*#* got me into adding LTE back into the system but problem is when I reboot. it goes back to WCDMA only or GSM WCDMA. and I lose LTE. But atleast I have LTE when I didnt reboot it. Then I found another problem which is losing data after I used LTE for a while. It won't reconnect until I reboot the phone or SOMETIMES it will return if I go into airplane mode and back. After some long research. I found this to be working for me.
So this is my story of how I got it to work for me
To start off with. This is what I am using
LG G2 D802
Android version 4.4.2
Baseband Version M8974A-AAAANAZM-1.0.190082
Kernel Version 3.4.0
Build KOT49I.D80220b
Software D80220b
My provider is Metropcs so if anyone has other issues with other providers. I don't know if this will help you.
First thing this phone needs is it has to be rooted - that part you do your own research and wont be hard since you are on XDA!!!
Then to get LTE working, you will need to type in 3845#*802# on your phone to get into the hidden menu
LTE-only ---> Modem Settings ---> RAT selection and select GSM / WCDMA / LTE Auto (will display SUCCESS) tap OK
This will give you LTE from the phone but it will not give you this option in your Mobile Networks / Network mode section (Preferred network mode) Atleast it didn't display it for me.
For my phone I had to edit the build.prop file for it to show it in the preferred network mode list.
In the build.prop file. You will have to look for this line and change the 9 to a 11. I've also saw some post about it being not a 9 and have to change to 12 for some networks. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT CHANGE IT TO A NUMBER 0. It will crash the phone.
From
ro.telephony.default_network=9
To
ro.telephony.default_network=11
After this I got me LTE connection but issue with the lost of settings after reboot started. So next part helps with the reconnection after reboot. I got this from a post in XDA So give credit to the person that posted this. Sorry if I dont have it handy as I wrote this
- Root
- Install and activate Xposed fw
- Install and activate Intelli3G module
- In build.prop change ro.telephony.default_network=9 from 9 to 11
- Create a Tasker profile of type Event -> System -> Device Boot
- Associate the profile to a new Task of type Misc -> Send Intent
- Configure the task by setting in the "Action" field the value "action.intelli3g.CHANGE_NETWORK_TYPE" and in the first "Extra" field set the value "extra.intelli3g.NETWORK_TYPE:10"
Doing this got my reconnection after reboot fixed. and LAST is the problem of randomly losing data connect until I reboot the phone. and after a long test.. This is my result. The phone lost connection due to trying to connect to LTE with non existing band. I don't know too much about those but from my testing. This is how I made my phone worked and it has been working for the last 2 weeks without any issue.
Go back into the hidden menu with 3845#*802#
LTE-only --> Modem Settings --> LTE Band Selection
Here you will see a Band with a number.
MetroPCS supports band 2, 4, 5 and 12
Since this phone doesnt have 12. You only select 2, 4 and 5 then just push back until the hidden menu closes.
Other providers. I dont know what band that they use. but i am guessing if you only select the bands that company supports. You might not have that issue with losing data anymore.
Please press thanks if this works for you.

No data after having WiFi enabled for a while

Hello,
I've had this issue across more than 1 device and more than 1 carrier.
Here's what happens:
I enable WiFi, and for a while everything works as expected. I can send and receive MMS messages. I can disable WiFi and go back to my 4G connection.
The problem is, after an unknown amount of time, the phone drops the 4G connection in the background. I only know when I can't receive/send MMS messages anymore. At that point, if I disable WiFI there's no 4G data connection, and I have to turn Airplane mode off and turn it back on.
This is really annoying. It happened to me using Sprint and a Galaxy S4 (both stock and custom ROMs) and it's happening to me with a Galaxy S5 from MetroPCS. (I've used the stock Metro ROMs, Stock T-mobile ROMs, and Custom T-mobile ROMs).
Right now I'm using a Stock T-mobile ROM with the latest firmware, carrier is MetroPCS.
What can I do so this doesn't happen? It's really frustrating.
Thank you for your time.

Hello.
That's already disabled.
Should I enable it?
I tried with "smart network switch" enabled and disabled and problem still happened.
My S5 G900F Android 5.00 (Smart Network Switch disabled, Power Save disabled) on EE UK has had this problem for 9 months after phone upgraded itself to Lollipop (EE win the accolade to being the SLOWEST ON THE PLANET to provide Android updates.....). Since Jan 3, my wife's G901, a couple of weeks after it upgraded from 5.0 to 5.02, has developed the same problem. Neither phone has ever been rooted or other.
I have fruitlessly searched everywhere for a solution without success. EE Customer Services Tier 2 & Samsung's own service centre have failed to fix it. EE & Samsung blame each other for 5.1 or 5.1.1 not being available for download. Neither is prepared to resolve the issue despite hours on the phone. Have tried Safe Mode, Factory Reset, clearing everything, reloading APNs & Samsung even reloaded Android. All a waste of time: Many many days of it!
After approx half an hour connected to Wi-Fi, only way to get the mobile data to connect, is either reboot, enter & exit Air-plane mode or flip the 4G > 3G > 4G connection under More Networks. Have tested the fault in different cell areas countries and continents; fault is same everywhere.
It seems there are quite a few sufferers of this problem.
Samsung S5 keeps losing data connection
I have the same problem. My new Samsung phone loses the data connection (even though data is turned on) and I can only re-connect by restarting the phone. The first EE shop I took it to couldn't help at all. The second gave me a new SIM - that didn't work. Then I tried online support and after 3.5 hours of my life, in which I was passed on from one person to another, they completed a factory re-set - which didn't work (and additionally lost all the personalisation of my screen and some of my contacts). So I now have a not-very-smart phone which I have to re-start every time I want to use data. This is a business contract and the phone is less than two months old, but I'm not getting any effective support from EE. Android version is 5.0.2
me too, since last update. and app 'phono' shows "mobile data off" not got a time on it, but when i leave wifi coverage, it wont reconnect to cell data 2g/3g/4g. flightmode toggle to restore.
Abandon hope if you have this intermittent mobile data problem!
...at least until there is a software update, though I have no idea if that will help.
I have now tried a new sim card, a factory reset, and a replacement phone - which was provided only because I'm a business customer and I found a sympathetic member of staff. *By the way, I was told that if you are personal customer they won't consider replacing your phone if it is more than a month old - even if you started complaining about the phone as soon as you got it, the chances are a month will have elapsed by the time they put you through the hoops of a new sim, reset etc - and then it is too late to insist on a replacement phone.
In any case the replacement phone didn't resolve the issue so I have reached* a dead end. My phone fails to connect to data after having been connected to wifi - you have to do it manually each time you move away from a wifi connnection. At first I was doing it by restarting the phone, but am now following the advice of someone else who has the same problem and am going into flight mode and out again. *
This is not satisfactory, and it seems from reading forums that EE are to blame for the problem rather than Samsung, but I'm not 100% sure about that.*
Possible solution that works, for me, at the moment!
Having suffered this issue of my S5 (SM-G901F) not connecting to mobile data after being on Wi-Fi for a while unless switching airplane mode on/off for a few weeks; although it has probably been happening since the update I received late December; I have tried all of the turn this switch off, factory resets (x2), etc, etc, etc. and Googled the issue without success.
I have found this thread interesting, and I even tried calling EE support only to be told "you have tried everything that we would tell you to do" and "it wouldn't be a sim card, or handset issue, sounds like software". The reply was basically that like-it or lump it until the 5.1 update is released "by Samsung not EE because EE do not release Android updates". [Perhaps EE don't release the updates, but the stock rom is tested by them and their bloatware added before they eventually release it!!!]
Following my last reset I tried selectively re-installing the apps I used incase that was causing the issue. No Luck!
One last thing I tried was to look at every system 'thing' that I could find which used/switched any part of the mobile/mobile data/wifi - in addition to the settings I had already tried (all of which were mentioned in this thread previously). One thing I could not find not mentioned here, or anywhere, was the VoWi-Fi call on/off which I had always set to on as I do not live in a great reception area. Calling over Wi-Fi is great when you don't have a strong mobile signal.
Having 'played' with this setting for the last 24 hours I have found that the VoWi-Fi on/off appears to be a possible cure - for me anyway.:fingers-crossed:
When VoWi-Fi was set to off and leaving the phone connected to Wi-Fi overnight, the S5 immediately switched to mobile data this morning when I turned the Wi-Fi off . It continued to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data all morning whilst out and about in and out of Wi-Fi connections - Woop Woop!!!
I then tried switching VoWi-Fi on (with Wi-Fi on and at home), leaving the phone for a number of hours, only to find that when I turned Wi-Fi off the phone refused to connect to mobile data even with a 'decent' mobile signal. The only way to get it to connect was to go back to switching Airplane mode on/off.
Switched VoWi-Fi off again, left Wi-Fi connected, left the phone for a couple of hours, etc. and hey-presto immediately switched to mobile data when I turned the Wi-Fi off. [Dances around the room because he's got the S5 automatically switching to mobile data again. Even though I'm at home with a great fibre internet and strong Wi-Fi connection!!!]
I do not know if this could be a solution for the others who are suffering from this issue, but it appears to be a solution for me at the moment. I thought I would share as your previous posts have helped me and you all seem to be pulling your hair out; like I have been; trying to find a solution.
Try it, it may work, but don't shoot me if it doesn't!
It's encouraging to know that I'm not crazy. I've had this issue across two devices and carries.
John,
Thank for your suggestion about WiFi calling. Unfortunately, I always have it off! I never used it, so maybe I should try turning it on? We'll see lol.
At this point, I think this is going to be my last Galaxy line phone.
Is it wi-fi calling that's causing the problem?
I have wondered if there is a link with wi-fi calling, but haven't tested it properly. I signed up with ee and bought the Galaxy phone specifically so that I could use wifi calling, as the town where I live (in the Scottish Borders) doesn't get a mobile signal strong to work reliably indoors from any of the networks. I'll try turning off wi-fi calling to see if that sorts the data thing (though I see that for one person above it did not). That would mean I wouldn't get calls or texts when I'm at home so it would not be a permanent solution for me. But in fact the wi-fi calling is not reliable anyway....

Brian,
You never know the way things are going with this issue; given that nobody seems to be able to pinpoint the fault; turning it on may just sort it!!!
still no change and its a pita.....

Mobile data not going inactive when wi-fi connects?

So when I first got my V20 (VS996), when wifi was connected the mobile data went inactive- at least I'm presuming so, the '4G' was grayed out, not crossed out, and when there's simply no 4G signal it entirely disappears (or drops to 3G etc). But now it ALMOST never does this anymore... every once in a while it will, but there's nothing specific about times it does.
I'm pretty sure that's what it's supposed to be doing, as there's even an option 'Cellular data always active - Always keep mobile data active, even when Wi-Fi is active [...]' (not enabled). I've searched high and low for a setting that could be causing it not to work right, and information about this, but have come up dry. Is anyone familiar with this? Really didn't want to have to reset and track it that way.
Thanks.
Bad WiFi signal bro. Disable your gsm data and see if you can still watch YouTube.

developer options
keep mobile data always on
as well as agressive wifi to cellular handoff
as well as under advanced for wifi, you can tell it to switch more agressively off wifi under poor conditions etc

Bad WiFi doesn't seem to be the issue. It's showing max strength and is 2 feet away from the wireless router under my desk, and the issue still persists. (yes, youtube plays fine in HD)

I'm trying to get it to turn mobile data off, not hand off to it even easier. Are you saying that these options will make it disable mobile data when wifi is good, when it's not even doing that without them? Tried that just in case, it's still not deactivating mobile data (still at my desk, wifi router for 100mbps symmetric fiber showing full strength 2' away, so unlikely bad signal)
Edit: I may have found the issue. It appears one of the Verizon apps was forcing the cell connection to stay alive. I tried killing a bunch of the ones I wasn't using after recalling how their voicemail app only runs over cellular, and now mobile data is deactivated. I'll need more trial and error to confirm which one was doing it.. I killed 4 of them.. and it stayed off after re-launch so was clearly some kind of bug. Although it's odd as it did persist through reboots.
Edit: Confirmed; it's the 'Caller Name ID' app. Ending that single process restores the normal mobile data deactivation when wi-fi is good.
So another cause of this problem has popped up. After a reboot, 4G was becoming active after 15-30 minutes despite not touching the phone at all since the reboot, and there were no apps that could be killed to get it to switch off this time. But after a lot of trial and error, the cause was finally isolated: The My Verizon data meter widget. Once it refreshes, it forces cellular data to stay on, even when Wi-Fi is connected and strong. Once the widget was removed from the home screen, 4G never came back on while using WiFi.
Is there any way to disallow an app from using 4G but still allow it to use WiFi? I really would like a better solution than just not being able to use the widget. It would be fine if it just connected, got its update, then disconnected... but no, it's on permanently after a refresh.
