Device switch off at 15% - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I have to start with one important thing, Nexus 6p by far is best device I have used so far, it's been 2 years now since it's in my hand and I can't imagine daily routine without it, even now when so many new devices come out I still can't imagine myself selling this device to get a new one.
But recently I got a weird issue that never have before, whenever mobile showing "battery low" message it switch off right after close to 15%, I don't know why and what cause it (might be that I was leaving phone in charger while game was auto battling) either way, I am thinking to buy a new stock battery to change it. I tried to dry it out death and full night charge but issue still occur, what your thoughts ?

It's the battery. Replace it. Dozens of threads on this already.

Strangely enough, I thought my battery was going bad too. My phone hit 15% and then seconds later died immediately while I was running LineageOS. I switched to stock Oreo recently and the issue went away entirely. (That and my screen on-time is way better.) Currently at 8% after 4hr 34m of screen on time and I haven't powered off early since going back.

Anyone else with this problem...?

Hello all,
I bought the HD a couple of months after it first was released and have never had this problem until about 3 days ago, where my phone has started to suddenly "die" even with ample battery life in it. When I reboot it, it simply starts to reboot then dies again as if the battery is dead, however, when I plug it into the charger, it shows that it has over half to almost full battery life. So the problem can not be that the battery is simply dying. What could be causing this problem? I have ample free main storage and program memory and it occurs even when there is only one program running or even when I'm just in the middle of a call.
Can anyone help me solve this problem? I have tons of medical programs in my phone which took forever to install and don't want to hard reset the phone, especially if that is not even the solution to the problem. Help?
Same thing happened to me, but my phone gets some water. I had to dry it and wait a month. Then it worked fine. If your phone hasn't took any water the problem must be elsewhere.
One question, it dies even if attached to the power? or only on battery?
If it dies only on battery then could be the battery not working properly.
bye
Batteries do weird stuff when they're dead. If it works OK on power but not on battery, chances are the battery is indeed on its way out. If you don't want to do a hard reset, a replacement battery on ebay is cheap and worth trying.
Hello,
I have exactly the same behavior. I changed of Rom, different build, each time running Task29, but it is always the same thing :
- when charged, phone never dies
- when on battery, it randomly dies but always when phone is awake
I think too it may come from the battery, so I just ordered a new one, and I'll keep you up to date.
Ciao,
Yea, so far it has occurred about 4 times, always when it's not plugged in however the battery meter shows alof of battery time left. I'm thinking it's the battery too, it just sucks to have to pay so much for an OEM battery. Oh well, thanks for the help everyone.
Hello,
so I received my new battery this morning.
After some phone calls and some tests...so far so good ! I'll tell you if something's change in the next days, but it seems changing the battery is the solution.
Cheers,
Mine started doing similar things. Guess I will order a battery too. Which one did you get?
Well I got the exact same one I had previously : an official htc touch hd battery.
Part number : 35H00120-01M.
I hope this one will last until I really want to change my phone .
Any more issues since replacing the battery?
still no issues so far. I am really happy because as the battery is new, my phone last much longer than before.
Same here. Got the new battery yesterday and it's back to it's old self. Now it should last me until the dual core processor Android devices come out next year.
Well it would be nice if my pnone only turned off when it wasnt on charge but it seems to just reset itself whenever it wants. it will simply turn off and start right back up sometimes not even reaching the rom load before it turns off again. It does this for a while or just simply once. I tried erasing all data off it and hoping it was something i uploaded but it could be that my battery is just no good anymore.
Any suggestions? ive been dealing with this for 6 months
I don't know about you, but I played quite a lot with my phone, trying a lot of ROM, for a while, even beta ones, and I tried to overclock it. Often the phone would heat up a lot. It may have be hard on the battery.
Right now I am using a stable rom of NRG from last month, with the new battery, and everything is fine. The phone never heat, and I happy for now.
Like Marksm, I am waiting for Android dual core phones or at least based on Tegra 2.

Nexus 4 switching off at night while charging

I know this has been discussed plenty of times but I just have some more questions of my own I'd like to ask.
So my N4 just switches off over night after being charged to like 95-100%.
It is usually fully charged (green LED) but won't turn on if I want to wake the screen.
I have to hold the power button for like 5 seconds for it to switch off. Then I am able to boot it again.
If i just unplug the charger, wait like 30s to a minute, the screen will wake, it works as usual. But the phone restarted (!!!) without any boot animation or anything. Just like nothing happened. If I then go into settings -> battery you can see the phone switched on just a minute ago.
This is happening like everynight for me now, so I had to use my old phone as an alarm clock as I slept in quite a few times actually
I searched like all forums and tried everything but I cannot dissolve this issue.
I even turned off deep sleep in dev options and stuff alike, monitored temperatures and stuff. Nothing conclusive though.
So I just have no idea why this keeps happening.
It happened with different roms and different kernels. Root or not rooted.
A friend of mine has a N4 as well and he does not have this problem at all. He does not have a custom rom flashed or anything.
But I read on other forums that even users with stock rom had this problems.
I think this is a quite common problem with the Nexus 4 device, isn't it?
Anyone solved it yet? Or does at least know the CAUSE for this?
I mean srsly there is like nothing on the forums..
Is it software related? Hardware related? Did I **** something up?
Is this a valid reason to send my phone back to google and get a new (working) one?
Everything else just works flawlessly. I mean the N4 with PA on it works so smooth like a charm.
I DO NOT WANT TO GIVE IT BACK!
noone? really?
I don't remember this being a common problem, though maybe I missed something.
If I was you I would wipe everything and re-flash stock. Then if it still happens return the phone, it shouldn't be doing that and I wouldn't put up with that if it was my phone. But it's your choice.

I have the same problem and I believe that this and similar issues are becoming increasingly mentioned on various sites on the net. XDA tread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2077148 which gives some idea as to what people are doing to get to the bottom of the problem.
There is further info here - https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35139 which starts with Sleep of Death issues on JB4.1.1 (on the Galaxy Nexus but has more recently focused on the Nexus 4).
Initially the problem occurred maybe 3 times a week. I'm running a Stock N4 and whether stock or custom does not seem to make any difference.
I re-flashed a stock image and thought I had solved the problem. The phone ran okay for a few weeks and then reverted to random SOD's normally at night whilst charging. If I use airplane mode at night I have no problems. It has also become unresponsive/deep sleep on three occasions during the day. More recently I have stopped leaving wifi enabled unless I need it I no longer use airplane mode and have not had any further problems --- so far ---
For me at least, the problem might be wifi related.
This happened to me this morning. I have my phone on charge every night and it probably hits 100% about 3am every morning. I have the alarm set at 7am to wake me, and has done every morning since I got it last month. However I have now slept in twice (this morning was catastrophic) due to waking up to find my phone was switched off and my alarm subsequently didnt sound!! I have wifi left on, but all my apps are closed down, and only the alarm app running.
To switch it back on I have to hold the down the power button for in between 5-10 seconds for it to reboot.
Does anyone know why this is happening? The Nexus 4 is perfect in every other way, I'm gutted to find a fault after raving so much about it!
Same thing is happening to me every night !
I have the same problem, but it happens sporadically, so I never know when I'm going to end up sleeping in. It's infuriating.
It just happened again this morning. I had Wi-Fi disabled, so I know it has nothing to do with that.

Sounds like a rogue app is triggering the phone to crash or something?
Have you tried a factory reset?
This bs caused me to be late to a final exam... I was so mad when I woke up and saw that it was 2 hours later than the time my alarm was set to sound.. Only started happening with 4.4+ updates.

Hey man,
My girlfriends nexus 4 did this as well and she got it RMA'd with no questions asked and a brand new one sent out, they told her to do a factory reset; this worked for a few days then went back to normal again.

Charging cable
I have had this problem eventually with every android phone I've ever owned but it seems by replacing the charging cable with a new one the problem goes away. It seems that there is a weird thing with android where if the cable doesn't sit completely snug or straight the battery can charge but the phone won't realize this and go to sleep. Also seen the opposite happen where the phone thinks that the battery is charging and in fact it hasn't. When you unplug it suddenly goes from full charge to nothing. Haven't seen that last one on my Nexus 4 yet though. So I would try replacing the cable (not necessarily the charger) usually worked for me on other phones. Also I would suggest not to leave the phone and cable hanging off the end of a table. Make sure it's in enough that it sits flat. I think this is how I slightly bent mine.

[Q] Nexus 4 Instant Battery Drain/Shut-Off

Hi
I have recently started having a problem with what I presume to be the battery of my Nexus 4. It seems to have started suddenly about a week ago, though was working absolutely fine before. I don't think it was due to any specific app having been installed. I have also done a factory reset on it, but that didn't solve the problem.
Basically, the battery will discharge to about 75%. The phone will then suddenly switch off; turning the phone back on, it simply shows the battery to be fully depleted and switches off. If I plug it into a power source, the phone turns back on and begins charging, from 0%, though seems to suddenly fully charge it within about half an hour.
My phone has not been rooted.
I would really appreciate any help/advice on this issue as it is incredibly frustrating having to have my phone almost permanently on charge.
I have attached two screenshots of the battery usage graph.
Thanks!

If you are on stock, try flashing the stock image(4.2 or 4.3 up to you) there's plenty of threads on here thatll guide you thro the process.
I've had the same issue about three times, during the first week of using my Nexus 4 (about half a year ago). I've already had my mind made up to RMA it, but waited for it's shut-off to happen once more to collect some evidence of this problem and... it never happened again. I'm pretty confident that I didn't install anything that might have helped (I only installed BetterBatteryStats to check the instant drain, but really doubt it could change anything, it's just statistics), and I've never factory wiped the phone's data yet.
I've been searching for answers around the internet back in May, but never found anything of value, so my only advice is... wait a little, and if it doesn't get better itself return it to the merchant. My previous HTC phone was restarting almost everyday from the first day I bought it, until a month later I returned it for warranty repairs and after they changed almost all internals of the phone it never crashed again (till today, since I still use it as GPS and media player when running).

Faulty

First of all -please excuse the thread's title, but I encountered an issue where I couldn't input content in the "title" box unless I refreshed the page and started typing before it loaded the page fully (tried on both Chrome and Firefox - VERY odd).
Recently I've encountered issues with the phone (N910F) getting really hot and shutting down the phone. I was in The Philippines at the time and the daily temp was around 34 degrees so I thought this may have had something to do with it. One battery in particular, whenever I used the camera it would shut the phone down. I stopped using that battery and then eventually the other 2 have been doing the same - they are all after market batteries bought from Amazon from Anker and Rav power and within a year old. But then it would get worse and the phone would just randomly shut down - it seemed to make no difference if it was at 90% or 30, it would just die. I'd often have to do a battery pull and hold down the power button just to get it to fire back up again. Over the last 2 weeks it's gone form a few times a day, to multiple times an hour! I even tried to limit the load by changing the governor to "powersave" and that initially seemed to help matters.
I figured it could be one of three things going wrong - a software related issue, a hardware issue with the phone or failing batteries. I installed [ROM][N910G/F][ODEX]* DQL1 * Multi-CSC, De-Bloat stock, Fast&Light[CUSTOM] and it was a while till anything happened but then once again - it shut down. So I don't see it being ROM related, I'd only added a couple of basic apps too, so I cant see it being a rogue app.
My last N910F had the EMMC failure and I recall that it would regularly freeze or lag heavily then crash and bootloop, but normally my phone just shuts down. I'm hoping that this means it's most likely battery issues, but it seems strange that all 4 batteries would fail within a 5 month period, especially as they were all on rotation. I even took to only charging them (in a Samsung external charging cradle) on an evening when the temperature was cooler. I've contacted both manufacturers but I know that Anker dont have any replacement batteries anymore, so I'm hoping Rav power will replace that faulty battery (that one started to swell a few days ago.
So, what do you fine fellows think is the likely issue that I'm encountering? I don't want to throw good money after bad and buy more batteries if it's likely that it's a phone issue, but I also don't want to get rid of the phone if I can get it working again.....
(I'd been running the Resurrection Remix Rom on Nougat for about 10 months. I went traveling 8 months ago so I didn't update the ROM as I it wasn't super stable at that point and I was happy how it was working - if it's not broke, dont fix it! But after a while I started to have issues and one of the batteries began to swell. I got rid of that one and switched between the other 3)

Phone shuts down and refused to start unless plugged in.... a non-hardware issue?

I've seen a couple threads that look like this issue. I have replaced my battery and I think it's good. I get great life and performance out of it.
This has happened a hand full of times. It started with the stock camera app. I double tapped power to launch the camera and it turned the screen on for a second then shut down. It happened a few more times when I was using the camera (launching, taking a photo, switching to front camera... ). Since I've had issues with the camera app I've wiped all internal storage and reloaded the ROM and apps. Just yesterday it happened again when I was loading the MyRadar app.
All times were with plenty of battery left, usually more than half. Plugging it in for a second will let it start and operate normally again with a good and same amount of battery left. I've used a couple benchmark apps to stress the phone to see if it was heat or power related, but no issues. I've manually tried running through a ton of apps to stress it (including the ones that gave issues) and still no problems.
Is there a chance this isn't a hardware issue? Maybe an issue with the ROM, Gapps, radio, vendor, etc... ?
ABC ROM from 06/24
Gapps from around the same date
Rooted with Magisk
Kernel Adiutor - only DT2W enabled
I know you said you replaced you battery.... But, it is typical symptoms of a Nexus 6P battery dying. I had the same kind of issues (shutdown when starting the camera, for example). Issues were worse in cold weather. We visited Iceland and i wasn't able to use my phone for anything else than GPS in the car while driving (connected).
All my issues went away when i replaced the battery.
Not saying this IS your issue, but it sure does feel familiar.
EDIT: Added a screenshot showing a 71% shutdown.

Do you have trouble starting the phone again once it shut down from a bad battery? I'm not denying it's a posibility, but I was under the impression that if a phone died from a bad battery it would either restart itself or was able to power on normally. Or, maybe my replacement battery has faulty circuitry of some sort.

Yes, i had issues starting the phone after those shutdown, I 100% had to connect it, wouldn't start otherwise. Even that time when it shutdown at 71%, i had to plug it to get it restart.
Super annoying when you are on vacation to a foreign country... Wanted to throw the damn thing in a volcano! haha
Since i changed the battery i became super an*l about it, installed AccuBattery and got it set to warn me at 70%. I only do 100% charges when i know i'm gonna need that autonomy. So far (a little more than a year later) i'm good, no issues.
