Pixel 2 (kinda blue) in the UK - Google Pixel 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Arrived yesterday and it does look pretty cool. But, whilst it's smaller than my Pixel XL it's not by much. It's kinda big for a 5" screen.

And, I've just noticed the high pitched whine that it makes from the earpiece. Disappointed.
After checking, this whine is clearly tied to the normal operation (eg any connection). Aeroplane mode results in the clicking noise noted elsewhere.
Return and refund underway.

I'm in the US. I was about to order a Pixel 2 last week, but now that I've heard of these clicking and whining noises, I'm definitely going to wait. This isn't the first device Google has had quality control issues with. I remember buying the Nexus 10 tablet back when it first came out years ago, and I ended up getting 3 replacements before just sending it back for a refund. Each one they sent me had a different problem (first one's power button was stuck down and hard to press, second one overcharged or something and wouldn't even turn on and was extremely hot on the back...)

Bell Galaxy S & Background noise

Hay all. Roughly 3 weeks ago i purchased 2 Galaxy S units from Bell Canada one for me and one for the GF. In the first few days, about one in every 4 calls on both units, the person I was calling (or had received a call from) was reporting that it was anywhere from near impossible, or completely impossible to hear my voice, and sometimes just hung up as a result. They report what sounds like garbling of my voice, sounded like I was underwater, robot sounding, or large amounts of static. I went back to the bell store where i purchased the units and after a lengthy conversation they swapped both SIM cards as we originally assumed it was a reception problem. Another few days went by, and nothing had changed. Myself and the GF had also made several calls to the store and they heard for themselves what i was talking about and completely agreed that there was definitely something wrong. They offered to replace the two units with new ones without question. Only problem is, no stores in the city had any left (this was last wednesday sept 1st) So now i'm waiting, with two phones that are for the most part at best, 70% useless for phone conversations.
Now... since then, i have absolutely positively figured out whats going on. These phones absolutely HATE any background noise what so ever!!! if it is not completely quiet, with near zero background noises, these two particular units are absolutely useless!! Example... The GF takes the bus to work every morning, while shes standing inside the bus shelter by herself, she calls her mom every morning to chat, the second she gets on the bus, and the bus starts motoring along, that is it, her mom can hardly pick out a thing she says overtop of garbling voice, and what sounds like static. Anywhere downtown in among the traffic and city noise, same thing. useless.. I operate heavy equipment for a living, and same thing... And believe me inside the cab of an excavator with all the windows and doors closed, it is NOT noisy what so ever!! maybe a tad bit, but not very. Same deal, nobody can hear a word I'm saying... I **** the machine off, and bang... sounds perfect... I could give lots of other examples, but i think my point is clear.
I'm just wondering if anybody else has had similar experiences?? My gf reports that one of her friends at work has the same phone, and she experiences exactly the same thing.. and is also waiting for a replacement... Just wondering if somehow a batch of these units (here in Halifax NS) is defective, or if its normal for these, or any stories and experiences would be appreciated. Of course, i called Samsung, and Bell CS line, and of course neither report any problems of any sort with these phones. Thanks for your input..
no complain from people i talk to on the phone
i've been using it for more than a month now
So even when your in noisy places, people still have no problem hearing you what so ever??
I just want to make sure nobody's time is being wasted by getting a replacement if these phones are prone to picking up a lot of background noise and not knowing what to do with the extra noise that doesn't belong...
Thanks for your reply!
restaurants and coffe shops are usually pretty noisy places
so are malls
never tried it during a ball game or an air show, so i can't say for sure.
Just to drop a line from another thread where I discussed similar issues with outoing sound quality:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8001035#post8001035
I've now tested three Samsung Galaxy S units and they all sound the same (i.e. quite bad outgoing sound quality, regardless of environment/network reception, worse in noise).
There's clearly some problem here.
I don't know if it is the drivers, the mic implementation or what. Clearly it can't be purely an Android level issue as not all Android phones suffer from this.
BTW, I checked this with two of my friends who work in audio monitoring for living and they confirm the issue.
There's clearly something wrong with the outgoing sound quality of Galaxy S.
Agreed.. But as 'allgamer' is reporting, not all seem to have the issue (problem) very strange... but albit VERY annoying... and frustrating... I sure hope the Bell store gets a new shipment very soon, and that a replacement solves the problem... if it doesn't, I'll def. be canceling my contract and handing the unit back, as it is obviously not worth $500+ if i can only make calls and have the person on the other end hear what I'm saying 20% of the time.. My old HTC clunker performed perfect no matter what the condition was. Maybe another HTC is in order.

[Q] Problems occurring in batches?

After reading all of the crappy review for the transformer, it looks as if 50% are happy 50% are not.
I am wondering if the problems are occurring in batches because I just ordered mine from American TV and it will probably be here tomorrow or the next day.
A lot of the problems I have found are from the batches that have already been purchased and I don't know what to think.
Two things:
When asus was first bringing these to market, it could the problems are coming from they just naturally skimped on manufacturing quality because they are so damn cheap. Or they had a bad batch to get them to market quickly.
Asus could also just had normal manufacturing quality before and NOW since there is a high demand, newer units may experience worse manufacturing quality. Or they could be better because they knew of the problems.
Hope its not too confusing, what do you guys think? Newer units = worse quality? Older Units = better than newer?
i think logically you could expect the first units to have the most problems, however, we dont know if asus had enough complaints, or realized that there are defects (if there are--aside from software side) to be able to retool and make changes during the assem process to produce better revised hardware.
I actually gave this exact topic a lot of thought a few days ago, i thought about everyones complaints and how it was hit/miss it seemed, and i wondered whether the people that are complaining were truly the "first" adopters and got REV 1 hardware. Obviously, since they are playing with the tab and most of us are anxiously awaiting its arrival i would assume it just may be the case. Heres to hoping that these little glitches were an easy fix at the factory level (but knowing how they operate i doubt its a simple/cheap/quick process, which makes me doubt that the tabs that me and you will receive this week will be any diff from the ones recieved by the people last week and the one prior. the time frame is just too small, but then again, anythings possible).

Definitely have to agree. My guess they are the same and it is so difficult for Asus to actually respond to problems and transfer a fix to the manufacturing of the units. The only real thing I am worried about is the light bleed/dead pixels.
Moreover, the problem seems to be 50-50 and my estimate came from the assumption that there is manufacturing quality loss through increase production speed to meet the high demand. I tend to believe this because of the poor quality control. I am assuming (after reading the post about the guy receiving a 2.2 model) is that they do perform screen quality checks, to a certain extent. Some may have just slipped out.
Lets just hope we get a solid model.
I tend to side with the second poster...it's all about quality control....how many get out the door without their defects being noticed OR....being flagged as a defect.
I've worked around assembly lines all of my life...25+ years and I can understand some defects got through unnoticed....but the question is: when were they noticed and what steps were taken to prevent the same issue from occurring again?
And the second point is valid also....speed equals a mindset of "this one little corner-cutting decision won't make that big a deal in the long run...."
Unfortunately, rushing things to market to fill orders at a breakneck pace means that issues are more likely to get by...that's a fact of life.
When cash is on the line...decisions get made that might not otherwise gotten made.
I hope mine comes today without the glaring errors that I've seen here...crossing my fingers...
My only real complaint is the light bleed. I know it isn't the only device that's had this problem. I remember when I was reading the Evo 4G forums it had a similar problem when it first came out and recently the iPad2 had light bleed issues too.
The light bleed isn't a huge deal, but it is distracting while watching certain tv shows and movies imo.
I've had 3, first one was the very first batch in the UK, arrived mid April or thereabouts. The next one was around the end of April and the the latest one I received around the 6th of May.
1) Mid April
Some lightbleed on 3 of 4 edges. Perfect screen in terms of pixels. Imbalanced speakers. No sleep of death in 2 weeks or so. No gap in glass.
2) End April
Terrible lightbleed. 14+ stuck pixels (I gave up counting). I think the speakers were imbalanced too. No sleep of death, but only used it for a few minutes. No gap in glass was noticed.
3) Start of May
Some lightbleed, probably akin to 1. Around 8 or so stuck pixels, seen on black screen. Perfectly balanced speakers. Had 1 incident of the sleep of death within 5 days. Glass does not fit perfectly on left hand side (gap of 1-2mm allowing dust inside and glass to be lifted by nail)
Had I known what would happen I would now gladly stick with the first! So, from this small sample it seems that in my case the earlier devices were better in some ways but not in others. We'd have to have a huge sample to be able to answer definitively. I still love the tablet though.
I have a first US batch version and it's fine.
This is why I just ordered the Acer. I got mine and had some light bleed. It got worse. The creaking got worse. Now there is a small piece of dust under the screen. It is not very noticeable except on white background but it worries me that in 6 days of ownership it is getting worse. I now see a dust spec under the camera glass.
The edges of all the ports are razor sharp and can take off skin.
I love the weight the price and the ups screen but the build quality is very disappointing. If it was only the light bleed from day one I would keep but I can't handle how much more has happened in 1 week of ownership.
I got a 32 DB Livonia using coupons from staples for only 40 dollars more than a 16gb Asus cost me. The screen in store was quite good. The build quality seemed much better and despite the added weight it seemed more comfortable. To hold given the curved shape. If availability were better maybe I would exchange my Asus but no stock around.
in the end I might just opt for the new galaxy tab as it seems to be most like the load in size and weight.

Just received
I just got the TF in the mail today. It is nice.. but there are some drawbacks from the xoom that I miss.
Xoom felt nicer in my hand and had that led notification. But the screen on the TF is WAAY better.
I do have light bleed in small sections, not terribly noticeable. Speakers are fine. no dead pixels, yet. not really a creaky sound, just when I press harder than normal on the screen. No glass misaligned. I will seal up the beast with a vinyl cover. Screen is responsive, no probs yet.
A bit disappointed
I received my TF this Thursday and was so very happy. After unwrapping it I pressed the power button and I got nothing. I thought OMG it's not working. Then I thought, maybe they didn't have time to charge the battery. So I charged it. I checked on in within a hour and pressed the button and it came on. I began to play with it and realized that after the TF wasn't in use for more than 5 mins the power button whenever pressed didn't wake the TF up... SO i pressed and pressed.. nothing.. so I waited about 30 sec after a press of the button and it came on.. After going thur this over and over I figured it was a defect and I RMA'ed it. I'm hoping that they didn't just push out a product that will have a lot of issues...
Here's my two cents:
Got my TF from Fry's in LA on May 5th. 32GB don't know manf date.
For light bleed - minimal sround the left lower edge and upper right edge. Dark room, bright up full, about a 1mm bleed - very slight and almost unnoticible.
Running latest update with no issues, just updated again today with no issues.
Sometimes after a long sleep it won't power back up with the power button, so I press the vol down and pwr at the same time (shut down) and it shuts down and restarts fine...Seems a sw glitch.
Other than that it's an awesome machine!
Dock - arrived on the 12th. charged up fine, docked fine, no mouse, brick or other issues other than the backspace key is touchy (actually not touchy -takes some effort), but all other keys work well. I think I'll RMA it later depending on how many show in production (I can live with this for now).
Case - had to cut a small hole in bottom to allow charging while case is closed. Otherwise great.
I hope this helps.
BTW, I don't follow these threads too much, so if you need something please PM me.
I feel like I've said this before, but I'm honestly surprised to hear of all of these issues. Mine doesn't seem to have any of them. No gaps around the screen, the glass fits perfectly, the casing for the tablet seems sturdy and doesn't budge at all. There's very little noticeable light bleed, if any. I've never had anything like a "Sleep of Death". I couldn't be happier with the quality of this beast.
EDIT: I should mention I have a 32GB version that I purchased from TigerDirect on Wednesday, got it this past Thursday.
My tablet and dock were among the older units. I had only one instance of SOD and the green screen with the camera issue which has been fixed via firmware update.
The tablet itself appears to be of high build quality, the bezel is secure, no gaps around the screen seal, no dust,no dead pixels, very minimal light bleed that I had to actively look for.
no problems to speak of
eGoing on 2 weeks ownership using various each day.
The only thing a few times I've come back to an unresponsive unit. Then I just held power button down 10 seconds and then rebooted. I take that with a grain of salt.
But. I am not going to update software for another week or so. Until I read more positive reviews
Many problems with mine
I ordered mine from The Best Buy batch on May 22nd, and it came with a not-smooth not-particularly-responsive screen; it then got two light leak spots, the clock disappeared from the menu bar once, and it bricked when I ran the 3.1 update. I sent it back, but I wonder, are the screens really not as smooth or responsive as the Xoom or Acer A500?

Nexus 4 High Defect Rate

I was wonder here if anyone has a similar story to mine or have any extra information they could share. I received my original Nexus 4 device in November around the release date. The first device I received was defect and had high battery drain and frequently overheated from minimal usage. So I asked for a replacement and when it arrived, that phone has a defective antenna and wasn't able to keep a connection with my service provider. Therefore, I had to send that phone back as well.
Google has already sent me 2 defective devices, most likely the fault of LG. I asked for another replacement and was told I would have it in 5 business days. After 5 days it never shipped, so I called them and was told due to the high demand in replacement phones, we did not except to go through our warehouse reserve so quickly and it will be 2-3 weeks till I receive my device.
Anyone else have this problem? How has Google dealt with it for you?
I haven't had one problem on this phone since I got it. granted it has only been 5 days. Been an awesome phone for me from the beginning.

Only problem I had was the noise coming out of the top of my phone (front and back) and to be honest I didn't even notice it until someone made a forum post about it. On calls, I can barely hear it and voice calls are loud enough that i can still barely hear it. I will live with it as people received replacements and have yet to have a clean one. Doesn't really bother me tbh.
Enjoying the N4 very much
your first one was good i guess , most n4's have battery drain , by overheated u mean hot back or did it turn off due to being hot
yeah, the last batch seems to be much more reliable. everybody in an other german android forum, who recieved their new device a couple ago, seems to be very happy. no new issues reported so far.
this may sound strange but I think, you should be glad, they went through their warehouse reserve so quickly and got rid of the old unreliable devices.
Yeah I replaced mine for the buzzing noise but my new one has a clicking noise from the bottom plastic

From reading many other forums and articles around the web this seems like a problem with N4. Let's see if LG has addressed all these issues by now. We will have to wait for a few weeks to really know if the later batches are defect free.
Many are speculating that the Google stopped selling the devices for now until they address these issues. In the mean time they seem to be grappling with the volume of returned devices and fulfilling the replacements to customers.
There do seem to be a lot of issues but at the same time people with problems are going to be more vocal. I don't think stock issues should be linked to high defect considering we have no idea how much stock google has had on hand to begin with.
i think its more that people are doing RMAs for issues that are not really defects like the buzz sound from earpieces that ALL N4s have or even people who are coming form AMOLED phones and are doing RMAs for light bleeding even tho all N4s will have some level of light bleed cause its an LCD.
because of this there is no longer enough devices for people with REAL faults that prevent normal device operations.

So why is the ear piece buzz normal? I can only hear it in a very quiet room when I put it to my ear.

I don't have the earpiece buzz or light bleed. Light bleed isn't a "grey" screen instead of pure black like I've seen some OLED people complain about, which I agree is ridiculous, but light bleed is when light actually bleeds out of an edge causing a non uniform display which is not an issue inherent to LCD. I get your point that some of the complaints are non-complaints and all phones nowadays seem to have a few months of growing pains, unfortunately.

One Speaker on my 6P was louder than the other.

I received my 6P yesterday, and by this morning I dropped it into a UPS box to send it back.
So, I got the 64GB aluminum version, it arrived a day after I placed my order. I set it up and let it install its OS update, which took forever, then I started to use it. Right away I noticed that the top speaker seemed louder than the bottom speaker when the phone was playing notification sounds. In two phone calls, people complained that it sounded like I was underwater or had them on speakerphone.
I was a little concerned by the speaker issue, so I took the time to play back audio from NPR and then tried a few videos. While playing back video, I flipped the phone this way and that, and moved the phone back and forth from ear to ear just to make sure I wasn't deaf in one ear. The top speaker was definitely much louder than the other. With the mic being housed with the bottom speaker, I'm lead to believe both issues are related.
I contacted customer support and the lady who took my call said that another user had called with the same issue, but she couldn't recall which model they had. She had spoken with the design team about this and they said it was a defect, that both speakers should be firing at the same volume level.
We did the mandatory factory reset and I fired up YouTube - then I moved my old phone back and forth over the speakers of the 6P and she could hear the difference too, so I ended up mailing it back for a refund - I plan to buy another, but an exchange would entail a $549 hold on my bank account, so a refund it is.
So, that said, I'm curious - has anyone else had this issue? I searched the web but didn't find anything, but I've tweeted to some people who were opening new devices and one of them said he felt the top speaker was louder on his unit too (I didn't say which speaker, I just asked if one was louder than the other), while another person said she'd follow up.
It seems like it's a relatively common issue.

Oh dear... I wouldn't have minded it if it was just a tad louder, but it was bad - plus I was having some speaker overdrive issues as well. I guess I'll wait for Google to process my refund and keep an eye on these threads before deciding if I want to take the risk again... Which sucks, because I was loving the phone. Hell, I picked this over a Lumia 950 XL because I wanted to use some half decent apps and have access to Tap to Pay. Sure, Android still waits forever for iOS apps, but Windows waits for never. -_-
I kept my phone regardless of the volume issue... lol.

I've blogged about this and have included all these links - thanks for the info! I really hope when I buy another one that it don't have the speaker issue. Google needs to step out and address Speakergate so users are aware of this issue.

I see on Reddit that some people are hearing the exact opposite of what I was told by Google support - Google support is telling them that this actually "feature" and not a flaw, which brings to mind old comics about Windows 95 and 98 bugs being labeled as features... -_-
If it's a "fault" on all phones then surely it's an easy software fix. I'm surprised none of the reviews mentioned it?

I too am amazed... But keep in mind that review units are hand picked and sent out by Google, so it's likely that phones without this flaw were sent to the press.

perfect piano poll/test faulty pixel hardware

So let's give this a shot all and see how many of us have a messed up phone download perfect piano and swipe your finger across the the keys real fast and if your phone is messed up you will hear loud crackling then try it on another phone with same app and guess what you won't hear crackling also apparently its only at full volume lowering one click might make it stop.
Edit: 3 clicks lower for me makes it stop google is calling it software issues and says its in process of being fixed and should be within the month but my issue with that statement is if the volume has to be lowered for it to stop then toe that's not software but crappy speaker hardware that can't handle the output of the volume. What that means to me is if they plan on fixing it what they gonna do lower our volume output so much to where we can't hear our phones anymore.? so that way they can save money by not replacing them and saying there fixed.
http://mashable.com/2016/12/19/google-pixel-xl-speaker-problems/#MSe3RwfkBsqH
Works perfectly fine for me. Couldn't get it to crackle.
Have it. First thing I checked after getting the phone. As long as my ringtone, and other media files's volumes don't crackle, I don't give a rat's arse about it.
Mine is clear as a bell. Pixel XL 128gb, ordered early November delivered the week of Thanksgiving (thought extra info might help if we want to start tracking problems).

I think some here won't even know how to reproduce the problem. Link that Youtube video on OP if you want proper feedback.
Just tested this! Thought mine wasn't affected so I didn't bother but I guess it is ??
Thanks for bringing this back up;
edit: already having an RMA phone sent! lets hope this one doesnt have it. plus the lens flare bug is pretty bad on my phone
Just tested my Pixel XL after I saw a Youtube video demonstrating the problem. Mine was fine though...no crackling at all.
Mine has it. I just got it a few days ago. Its the black 32gb XL. I don't see a build date in fastboot.
Also google rep had said they are trying to find out exactly how many devices are affected as of right now seems to be very wide spread through out a lot of devices so calling them and letting them know you are affected will help he said and possible speed up the process of finding a fix or replacing whatever if more and more phones are reported with the issue

Mine has it. I just got it a few days ago. Its the black 32gb XL. I don't see a build date in fastboot.

Sorry man didn't mean to rain on your parade as I know you probably been waiting for the phone for quite a bit now
I have never heard crackling on my 128gb XL at full volume until I tried this app. Yet, one click lower and it's perfect.
Regardless, if it doesn't happen in real world, it's not an issue.

Apparently the app is just the easiest way to recreate the issue but otherwise its a time to time thing with certain videos songs etc... Just like you I never knew of it either until today and the testing of the app but I also never play music or videos though my external speaker I actually hate that I even read my news feed on the subject lol wish I never did but a hole Verizon is sending me a knew one after telling me no and then I made google call them now its being overnighted lol
I have a Verizon QB Pixel XL 128GB (yeah, one of the lucky Black Friday ones that actually had it shipped) and YES, mine does have the issue when performing the "Perfect Piano App" test. I have not heard it other than that, however I don't usually use the phone's speaker much in daily use anyway.
At this point I am not going to worry about an exchange "right now" unless something critical starts showing it. If it truly is a hardware issue, I can wait it out a few months to until it is at least xda/reddit confirmed fixed, then go through the RMA process.
I just feel lucky to have one at this point.
Mine does it. It also does it in Daydream when the volume is cranked up.

Mine also does it. I got mine about 2 months ago.

That's cool. It's hard to recreate in anything else. I can definitely live with it until I'm certain I could get an unaffected one. Everything else is so good.
Mine does it but it doesn't bother me at all since I never really use it.
My luck I would get a replacement with 7.1.1 ?
I get my replacement tomorrow will update if it does it or not it defiantly is only certain batches of the phones probably ones that all have the same speakers from a certain manufacturer cause google out sourced to multiple companies for parts one of which included the speakers
I have a black 128gb Pixel XL and do not have any crackling sound at full volume with the app.
If it wasn't for this app that I never heard of before I wouldn't know the issue existed. Have not seen it anywhere else.
Not gonna worry about it.
