After reading all of the crappy review for the transformer, it looks as if 50% are happy 50% are not.
I am wondering if the problems are occurring in batches because I just ordered mine from American TV and it will probably be here tomorrow or the next day.
A lot of the problems I have found are from the batches that have already been purchased and I don't know what to think.
Two things:
When asus was first bringing these to market, it could the problems are coming from they just naturally skimped on manufacturing quality because they are so damn cheap. Or they had a bad batch to get them to market quickly.
Asus could also just had normal manufacturing quality before and NOW since there is a high demand, newer units may experience worse manufacturing quality. Or they could be better because they knew of the problems.
Hope its not too confusing, what do you guys think? Newer units = worse quality? Older Units = better than newer?
i think logically you could expect the first units to have the most problems, however, we dont know if asus had enough complaints, or realized that there are defects (if there are--aside from software side) to be able to retool and make changes during the assem process to produce better revised hardware.
I actually gave this exact topic a lot of thought a few days ago, i thought about everyones complaints and how it was hit/miss it seemed, and i wondered whether the people that are complaining were truly the "first" adopters and got REV 1 hardware. Obviously, since they are playing with the tab and most of us are anxiously awaiting its arrival i would assume it just may be the case. Heres to hoping that these little glitches were an easy fix at the factory level (but knowing how they operate i doubt its a simple/cheap/quick process, which makes me doubt that the tabs that me and you will receive this week will be any diff from the ones recieved by the people last week and the one prior. the time frame is just too small, but then again, anythings possible).

Definitely have to agree. My guess they are the same and it is so difficult for Asus to actually respond to problems and transfer a fix to the manufacturing of the units. The only real thing I am worried about is the light bleed/dead pixels.
Moreover, the problem seems to be 50-50 and my estimate came from the assumption that there is manufacturing quality loss through increase production speed to meet the high demand. I tend to believe this because of the poor quality control. I am assuming (after reading the post about the guy receiving a 2.2 model) is that they do perform screen quality checks, to a certain extent. Some may have just slipped out.
Lets just hope we get a solid model.
I tend to side with the second poster...it's all about quality control....how many get out the door without their defects being noticed OR....being flagged as a defect.
I've worked around assembly lines all of my life...25+ years and I can understand some defects got through unnoticed....but the question is: when were they noticed and what steps were taken to prevent the same issue from occurring again?
And the second point is valid also....speed equals a mindset of "this one little corner-cutting decision won't make that big a deal in the long run...."
Unfortunately, rushing things to market to fill orders at a breakneck pace means that issues are more likely to get by...that's a fact of life.
When cash is on the line...decisions get made that might not otherwise gotten made.
I hope mine comes today without the glaring errors that I've seen here...crossing my fingers...
My only real complaint is the light bleed. I know it isn't the only device that's had this problem. I remember when I was reading the Evo 4G forums it had a similar problem when it first came out and recently the iPad2 had light bleed issues too.
The light bleed isn't a huge deal, but it is distracting while watching certain tv shows and movies imo.
I've had 3, first one was the very first batch in the UK, arrived mid April or thereabouts. The next one was around the end of April and the the latest one I received around the 6th of May.
1) Mid April
Some lightbleed on 3 of 4 edges. Perfect screen in terms of pixels. Imbalanced speakers. No sleep of death in 2 weeks or so. No gap in glass.
2) End April
Terrible lightbleed. 14+ stuck pixels (I gave up counting). I think the speakers were imbalanced too. No sleep of death, but only used it for a few minutes. No gap in glass was noticed.
3) Start of May
Some lightbleed, probably akin to 1. Around 8 or so stuck pixels, seen on black screen. Perfectly balanced speakers. Had 1 incident of the sleep of death within 5 days. Glass does not fit perfectly on left hand side (gap of 1-2mm allowing dust inside and glass to be lifted by nail)
Had I known what would happen I would now gladly stick with the first! So, from this small sample it seems that in my case the earlier devices were better in some ways but not in others. We'd have to have a huge sample to be able to answer definitively. I still love the tablet though.
I have a first US batch version and it's fine.
This is why I just ordered the Acer. I got mine and had some light bleed. It got worse. The creaking got worse. Now there is a small piece of dust under the screen. It is not very noticeable except on white background but it worries me that in 6 days of ownership it is getting worse. I now see a dust spec under the camera glass.
The edges of all the ports are razor sharp and can take off skin.
I love the weight the price and the ups screen but the build quality is very disappointing. If it was only the light bleed from day one I would keep but I can't handle how much more has happened in 1 week of ownership.
I got a 32 DB Livonia using coupons from staples for only 40 dollars more than a 16gb Asus cost me. The screen in store was quite good. The build quality seemed much better and despite the added weight it seemed more comfortable. To hold given the curved shape. If availability were better maybe I would exchange my Asus but no stock around.
in the end I might just opt for the new galaxy tab as it seems to be most like the load in size and weight.

I just got the TF in the mail today. It is nice.. but there are some drawbacks from the xoom that I miss.
Xoom felt nicer in my hand and had that led notification. But the screen on the TF is WAAY better.
I do have light bleed in small sections, not terribly noticeable. Speakers are fine. no dead pixels, yet. not really a creaky sound, just when I press harder than normal on the screen. No glass misaligned. I will seal up the beast with a vinyl cover. Screen is responsive, no probs yet.
A bit disappointed
I received my TF this Thursday and was so very happy. After unwrapping it I pressed the power button and I got nothing. I thought OMG it's not working. Then I thought, maybe they didn't have time to charge the battery. So I charged it. I checked on in within a hour and pressed the button and it came on. I began to play with it and realized that after the TF wasn't in use for more than 5 mins the power button whenever pressed didn't wake the TF up... SO i pressed and pressed.. nothing.. so I waited about 30 sec after a press of the button and it came on.. After going thur this over and over I figured it was a defect and I RMA'ed it. I'm hoping that they didn't just push out a product that will have a lot of issues...
Here's my two cents:
Got my TF from Fry's in LA on May 5th. 32GB don't know manf date.
For light bleed - minimal sround the left lower edge and upper right edge. Dark room, bright up full, about a 1mm bleed - very slight and almost unnoticible.
Running latest update with no issues, just updated again today with no issues.
Sometimes after a long sleep it won't power back up with the power button, so I press the vol down and pwr at the same time (shut down) and it shuts down and restarts fine...Seems a sw glitch.
Other than that it's an awesome machine!
Dock - arrived on the 12th. charged up fine, docked fine, no mouse, brick or other issues other than the backspace key is touchy (actually not touchy -takes some effort), but all other keys work well. I think I'll RMA it later depending on how many show in production (I can live with this for now).
Case - had to cut a small hole in bottom to allow charging while case is closed. Otherwise great.

I feel like I've said this before, but I'm honestly surprised to hear of all of these issues. Mine doesn't seem to have any of them. No gaps around the screen, the glass fits perfectly, the casing for the tablet seems sturdy and doesn't budge at all. There's very little noticeable light bleed, if any. I've never had anything like a "Sleep of Death". I couldn't be happier with the quality of this beast.
EDIT: I should mention I have a 32GB version that I purchased from TigerDirect on Wednesday, got it this past Thursday.
My tablet and dock were among the older units. I had only one instance of SOD and the green screen with the camera issue which has been fixed via firmware update.
The tablet itself appears to be of high build quality,the bezel is secure, no gaps around the screen seal, no dust,no dead pixels,very minimal light bleed that I had to actively look for.

eGoing on 2 weeks ownership using various each day.
The only thing a few times I've come back to an unresponsive unit. Then I just held power button down 10 seconds and then rebooted. I take that with a grain of salt.
But. I am not going to update software for another week or so. Until I read more positive reviews
Many problems with mine
I ordered mine from The Best Buy batch on May 22nd, and it came with a not-smooth not-particularly-responsive screen; it then got two light leak spots, the clock disappeared from the menu bar once, and it bricked when I ran the 3.1 update. I sent it back, but I wonder, are the screens really not as smooth or responsive as the Xoom or Acer A500?

Yes, I had to replace my NC (Christmas gift) within the first 2 days. However, it was due to a sound issue - also discussed on several websites - and it couldn't have been an easier process. My local B&N said that of the hundreds of NCs they'd sold, mine was only the 2nd exchanged. I think that's a pretty safe ratio. My new one has had no quality issues at all. Given that I've had to replace PCs, smartphones and other electronics for quality issues, this doesn't seem too out of the norm.
I've had to replace mine as well. First due to sound issues. Now the piece of plastic around the "N" button isn't completely flush with the screen. I'm not taking it back for that reason because the rest of the hardware is fine. I do, however, have to get a new NC cable since the one i have now won't charge my NC. If it's not one thing, it's another.
Had to replace mine too, xmas gift, due to screen quality. There was a lot of light leaking along the bottom edge and a dead pixel. Super fast and easy, even transfered the extended warranty right over to the new serial. New NC is perfect so far.
Those with sound issues what were your symptoms?
Mine's been great. I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from buying.... I'm not discounting the issues people have had (multiple returns is certainly eyebrow-raising), but I'm sure for every problem you hear about on the forums, there are many with no problems that you just don't hear about.
Mine has been great, aside from one dead pixel. Can't even notice it for the most part, especially since adding one of the anti-glare screen covers.

I just replaced mine today for sound issues!! Every time it would hibernate I would lose all sounds and the only way to get them back was to reboot.
Not an issue in sight. No screen problems. No sound issues. My biggest complaint is no bluetooth.

No problems at all here 3 weeks in. I visit the B&N forums somewhat frequently and never heard of the sound problem before reading this thread.
My biggest problem is reboots after rooting.
First one dust under screen, dead pixel dead center.
Second one dead pixel lower right corner.
If you look at various sites, you will realize that there really is a quality problem that seems to be more centralized to screen issues/plastic noise.
Also realize that most of the issues are not major hardware failures but simple flaws.
Another thing to notice is that people are willing to exchange multiple times in efforts to find a keeper because the unit is just that good.
3rd one is on it's way! 1st & 2nd one had display issues...!!! Stupid me bought it online & as a bonus, it can't be exchanged in local B&N shops...
Yep ... 5 times. 6th (current) one is great, first 5 all had dead pixels.
I suppose it does say something about how awesome I find the device (once rooted), for me to go through that much trouble driving around getting it replaced ...
Got mine on release day and have had -0- problems ... got a second one a week b4 Christmas and it also was 'perfect' .. no performance or plastic problems ... live in a 'low demand' area I think and perhaps B&N is 'reprocessing' some of the returns that then get shipped to high demand area? Or maybe it's just luck of the draw ... anyway am really pleased with the two I have ...

My front Bezel starting becoming unstuck at day 12 of the 14 day return period. It was showing the stretching glue on the left side that creaked. I noticed it warping and looked at it in landscape mode from the top.. Surprise!

Ok, I am B&N is sending my 3rd replacement. (Not Rooted!)
1st one would not boot/reset after plugging it in to recharge.
2nd one reboots and reloads on its own. Called tech. support and had me do a factory reset but the next day did the same thing but came up with an install failure.
My cousin bought one on release date and had no problems with her's.
My first one(Tursday) came OOB with a borked USB port on the NC. I managed to get the cable inserted twice on Thursday(almost took it back the first time that I plugged it in but the cable finally went in as I was about to give up). The next morning no amount fiddling would get the connector to insert properly.
Had a horrible time exchanging it. The idiot at the register kept trying to tell me that it was "fine" and that was how it was "supposed to be" until I made him hook up the power adapter, point out no LED, took it over to the demo unit and demonstrated there, got them to get their charger out try it in the obviously defective one and couldn't insert that cable either. Finally they gave in and deigned to exchange it. After all of that I had decided to check the exchanges connector right then and there, and lo and behold it was just like the demo unit and obvious VERY clearly inserting unlike the defective unit.
B&N have crappy QA, cs, and sales. No wonder they're in trouble... I think that if anything crops up w/this one before my 14d are up its going back permanently. I probably should've bought it from the Worst Buy literally across the street or Walmart for better cs alone.

IIRC correctly , the hardware is by Inventec (Taiwan). As far as problems, none... nada... zero... zilch with mine, nor have I had problems with either of the "classic" Nook ereaders that we have.
After a month with two transformers and a docking station, I'm returning it all. The first one, which I still have, suffered from creaking, stuck pixel, dust, and back light bleed. The second one suffers from backlight bleed right dead where I can see it 24/7 on the status bar. Incredibly frustrating to shell out ~$530 and end up with these issues. Additionally there is still the issue (even with 3.1) with text input lag....my android and iphone devices don't even have this issue. I figure I could buy a E-350 based net/notebook and a G-Tablet for nearly the same cost as I have on this bundle. I admire the Transformer's aesthetics and it's ambition, I can certainly see the potential for the future....unfortunately, I just don't know how ready it is for prime time, QC issues aside.

Transformer working great, no input lag with thumb keyboard. Browser speed much improved with 3.1. No stuck pixels, some light bleed near the bottom left corner, no dust.

I just shipped mine to ASUS repair today (because newegg doesn't have stock to do an RMA replacement) due to defective HDMI port, dead left speaker and minor light bleed in bottom right (not really enough to bother anyone).
I'm not ready to give up on my TF yet but I'm not sure what I'm going to do for the 2 weeks or so it will take to get it back.
Received my Transformer yesterday. Peed my pants a little. Took 2 hours to put on a Skinomi Carbon fiber skin and screen. Turned on device and there was light leakage all around the screen. fml!!
Now I have to wait a very lonesome 2 weeks. 2 weeks is a long time in the tech world. Sorry for the rant but needed to vent. wahhhh.
Ya..I felt the same way, I basically had the devices for a month but didn't use them due to shipping etc...I just didn't want to keep doing the swaps, already lost a month on two by the time I sit down and enjoy one, Transformer 2 is going to be out . I think I may buy a lower end tab, like the G-Tab, and just wait for the next revision. I felt like the Transformer, especially w/ the dock was really close to revolutionizing my home, work, and school life onto one device. Due to some finicky QC and just lack of polish, I think I jumped in a half-generation too early. I am confident, however, that the XDA-dev team will find a way to make the Transformer relevant and competent even in the next generation of quad-core tablets. I'm just amazed at how they've kept the Nook and VS G-Tab relevant among a wave of flagships pushed out by big name players like Samsung, Motorola, etc...
Just got my TF last sat from Fry's. I have about 4 to 5 light bleed spots at the bottom edge of the screen that are pretty obvious in dark scenes. Couldn't exchange cuz they're out of stock already. Hopefully, they'll restock soon. I hate to have to send it to ASUS. So far haven't had any issues other than light bleed.
My Transformer has been perfect minus the very minor lightbleeding that is only visible when the screen is black and my surroundings are dark.
Other than that... no issues on the hardware side of things
So has anyone shipped theirs to Asus? Shipping policy? Charges? Waiting 2 weeks isn't that big a deal to me, but I don't want to be having to pay more $$$.
I'm having the same issues, light bleed all over the edges, several stuck pixels, creaking, typing lag.
I already returned one to the store I bought from due to seriously 25+ stuck pixels, became hard to keep track of which ones I already counted after that.
Please vote and let us know about your N7 and where did you buy it.
This pool could give us clue about the build quality and help people to make buying decision.

Things I noticed about my Nexus 7 in the first night with it:
1) Right audio output is dead. 3 headphones pushed in all the way. This in the end is why I'm getting a replacement.
Other minor issues:
2) Touch seems flaky. A single touch-drag will glitch into two touches every now and then. I noticed this when browsing it will suddenly zoom instead of scroll. I also see it in Swype where it will drop in the middle of a long word, really annoying. There are other glitches that I can bring out with multi-touch in a test program but I don't think they are significant comapred to the ones I can actually notice causing problems while using it. All I know is that the touchscreen performance of my SGS is pretty much flawless (one of the reasons I bought it over the Desire) and the N7 unit I have now is far from it and it shows in some pretty annoying ways.
Is this systemic or a random defect? Hardware or software fix? Who knows, but from what I have heard and know these digitizers are discrete units that report touch locations and can't be fixed in software. Worth returning the device over? Maybe, but sadly I think it might mean bailing on the device completely as it could be unfixable.
3) Orientation sensor is off by about 4 and 6 degrees in X and Y directions. Sucks to play a game and have a tilt offset, and probably screws with auto-rotate a bit too. This seems like it could be calibrated out easily but this functionality, if it exists, is not readily apparent. Wonder if this is caused by UPS or whoever tossing the boxes around. My SGS was off about 4 degrees after a drop, but there was a command line calibration for it (also in the menu in 2.3, but I got lucky when they repaired the faulty internal SD it went away, probably on the same board as flash that was replaced).
4) Screen raised up on the left side. This is first thing I noticed because I looked for it first. I could probably live with it or try the washer fix if it weren't for the audio jack problem. It doesn't make any creaky noises or anything.
The screen as far as display looks quite good. Even blacks with no backlight bleed or dead pixels. My concern is that my replacement unit will have a worse problems with the display than this one, then I'll end up riding the replacement train for another pass like so many other folks. I might just ask a Google rep straight up if it would be better to wait a few months. I was prepared to do this for minor problems but the broken audio jack is pretty major.
So what's the consensus? I was really considering picking up a Nexus 7 until I read about the screen separation issues. I used to have an ASUS Transformer and really liked ASUS's build quality. Is the Nexus 7 really that bad? I don't like the idea of buying a $250 tablet and then having to open it up and modify it just to make it work properly. (Especially since the iPad Mini is rumored to be released next month.)

I personally loved my Nexus 7, and I'm one of the lucky ones who had their screen crack. I should be getting it back today, as it was supposedly fixed under warranty without a charge (guess I plead a good case when I called 4x reminding them I won't be paying for it). Keep in mind just how many of these units were sold. There's a handful of people here on the forums and AndroidCentral, etc., posting about this issue, yes... but go onto an Apple forum and you'll see the same thing.
Has the iPad mini even been announced yet? I keep hearing rumors but nothing solid. If you're somebody who doesn't mind iOS, it's not a bad option to wait, but you'll almost undoubtedly pay more for a similarly spec'd tablet. I personally wouldn't consider it, but that's just my 2c. If you're somebody who is pretty agnostic about it, waiting to see what more options come about is never a bad thing. Just don't catch the waiting disease... if you wait too long, you'll find yourself in a constant waiting hole with no devices you could otherwise be enjoying. :good:
I will say this, though. If you buy a Nexus 7, buy it from a local retailer. It's the same price as the N7 from Google Play, and plus you cut out the shipping time. Sorry Google, but being able to return a faulty N7 (in the event you get one) at a B&M store two miles away is still quicker than your (albeit, still fast) shipping turn around time.
The issue is not as great as the forums would make you believe. After all every single product ever made has a small number of defects.
Don't worry about it would be my suggestion.

I've had my Nexus 7 since it came out. Not a single defect or issue, its been great so far and I love it.

As with pretty much any product out there, I always take the online reviews with a grain of salt. A larger percentage of the people who had problems are likely to post compared to those that didn't have problems. Any time I buy something that causes me grief, I am generally ticked enough to want to post about it somewhere, but it rarely occurs to me to post something about products that work as promised and don't have issues.
This does not apply to my N7 because I love it so much I can not stop telling people. Mine has a tiny bit of screen lift that I would not have noticed if I had not read about it. Certainly not enough to want to try to return it. I may try one of the posted fixes but even that seems unlikely. Can't find the downtime...
The issues are there and they are real!
First Nexus = Creaking and Screen separation
Second Nexus = Screen separation
Third Nexus = Screen separation
Fourth Nexus = Severe creaking
Its sooooo sad as I love everything else about this freaking tablet! But the quality issues are out there just so you know it.
Huge issues
I think the screen lift screen crack and screen becoming un responsive is a HUGE Issue.. Its not just this forum where you see compalints.. You see it from tech reviews and so on.. I know that this is Hyped up causing to to be a bigger issue then it is . But the issue is not just the defects . Its how google and Asus has chosen to deal with this.. They have had my money cost of 3 tablets locked away due to exchange waiting . I Call and email with no response other then we will foreword it to a specialist .
I say get One From a Bick and Mortar store with a good reputation for taking care of there customers .. Buy a Extended warranty to where the STORE Has to deal with your device If and when it breaks.. I have never in my life seen such a Lack of Customer Service or Lack of Response for such issues .. Im left to where if i do not get a shipping confirmation and PAYMENT BACK TO MY BANK i will Have to file a complaint because im near the required time to do so with my card ... This is Pathetic..
so to everyone who says THERE IS NO ISSUE. READ THE INTERNET... im happy you have a perfect device it does happen But im getting the feeling there are as many defective ones as good ones...

I have one that has slight screen lift and creaking, but It's honestly not bad enough for me to worry about. I can't detect it unless I carefully look at it from the side, or press on the screen hard enough to make it flex. The case I have it in completely hides the problem.
Now, should it happen? No. But I bought a Nexus 7 because it was a fairly high-spec tablet that I didn't have to pay $500 for. I'm willing to accept a few compromises, especially when the cure (on-phone time, a bad refurb replacement) could be worse than the disease.
To minimize hassle, do what others have suggested and buy locally from a retailer with a good return policy.

The prevalence of screen lift is not being exaggerated. It's a widespread flaw, the cause of which is present in every unit. That's not to say that every display is separated, but the way the devices have been assembled through August (C8O serials) has left every Nexus 7 with an inadequate bond under the left side of the display.

Although the adhesive is weak in that area, some other stress should be required to actually force the underside of the display away from the frame. That force is either frame warp or pressure from internal components. ASUS has begun omitting screws from the left side of the device in an attempt to remove some of the stress behind the separation. This points to frame warp as the primary contributor, but it's a partial fix at best.

The fact that ASUS is now implementing reductive measures against screen lift as part of its assembly process should lay to rest any doubts about the scope of this flaw.
Having said that, I would not advise against buying a Nexus 7. It's still the best 7" tablet available, not to mention the best value for a tablet of any kind.
I went through three units with lift before deciding to wait it out, but this was not necessarily the correct decision. My second unit had merely the slightest lift and was well worth keeping, but users on this forum misled me to believe that screen lift was a rare thing so I exchanged it. My third one had more lift and exhibited distortion when pressed along the left side. That one was not worth keeping, so I decided to return it and wait for this issue to be fixed. Not sure if that's going to happen.
Like JaSauders said, the probability of lifted glass cracking during normal use seems very low, and if flexing the display caused a row of dead pixels, or any other sort of display failure, that would be covered under warranty.
I will say this, i never noticed the screen separation until I came to these forums and read about it, HOWEVER, now that I know about it, it drives me crazy.
On the flip side, if you plan to use a case that covers the bezel, you experience or see it anyway, so its not a big deal.
I haven't experienced any other issues aside from the screen seperation, and even then its not noticeable until you start messing with it.

Putting case over the edge of the tablet is NOT a fix for the screen separation issues . Eventually the glass will move enough from this causing it to become weak. or a piece of dirt will get under the screen and it WILL CRACK Or crumble. Anytime hard glass is put in a situation where it can move independently being twist or bent It will weaken and crack .
I know this from Structural Engineering classes.. I have been a project manager for high rise construction for much longer then some of those on here are old. . Glass that is scratch / impact resistant MUST BE SECURED PERFECTLY . Must be allowed to expand and contract from edge to edge .. My screen never separates to the point where anything could get under it... it just lifts up enough where I can press it back down..I'm not sure that would ever be bad enough to crack the screen. I'm have a C8O build so it may not be as bad as previous models? Im not sure.

Update: Got the 3rd unit
It's one of the new C8O models and it's the best one I've gotten so far.
No screen lift, no flickering, none of the issues I had with the previous ones.
It's pretty much flawless as far as my eyes can tell.

Congrats My C8O had minor lift, but last night I decided to glue it down and now its fine. Two drops of super glue and 5min later I havent had a problem all night/this morning. Played a bunch of 3D games to really heat it up and its golden.
I have the screen lift issue, but I have decided not to replace it. I would recommend that customers purchase the extended warranty at the store if in fact covers broken displays.
That said, I just rub down the face with a microfiber cloth before use and the lift is eliminated for a duration. Helps with the finger prints too.
That said, once a competing tab is released with the same specs I'd recommend that one instead. This QA issue will make me avoid Asus in the future. Google needs to vet OEMs better next time.
I've had four Nexus 7 tablets that have all had screen lift on the left side. Just got my latest one yesterday and it still has the issue. I've purchased lots of tablets and gadgets and this having to exchange something this many times and still getting a defects two months later is hardly normal or expected.
Fortunately the raised glass doesn't impair the functionality of the table (normally) and the tablet is pretty nice with stock Android Jelly Bean, Tegra 3, high DPI screen, and only $200/250. So all it's good points do outweigh ASUS incompetence to manufacture the tablet properly.
I'm sure many of us have gone through countless returns, replacements, and refunds, with Samsung's range of Galaxy smartphones, believing that our phones were defective as a result of absurd manufacturing anomalies and quality control problems. Though, we are not Samsung factory workers, it appears Samsung has given us some labor. Obviously spending $700+ on a phone is not little. However, according to Samsung, everything I am about to disclose is normal. To alleviate the hassle of dealing with a company that has a pretty poor track-record when it comes to quality control; I would strongly advise not to return your Note 2 to the service center or store for the following reasons,
I have listed common problems some of us have come across; along with are some Do-It-Yourself Tips and Tricks to resolve these minute problems.
Squeaky back cover?
- Ensure all sides of the back cover have clipped in properly; there should be no gaps, the fitting should be seamless
- If that doesn't resolve the squeaking, replace the back cover with a new one (cheap plastic tends to expand)
- Try not to remove and install the back cover over and over again, as that will eventually weaken the plastic clippings on the back cover
Light leaking on sides of home button?
- The home button has plagued Samsung for the past couple of years. But don't worry, your home button is not defective.
- The button is not uniformly seated properly, that explains. As a matter of fact, your home button should be flushed, not elevated above the display. To check if your button has light leakage, go into a dark room, angle your phone while the capacitive lights are on, and verify light leakage in the home button area.
- Solution: Place a piece of tape over the whole button, ensure that the tape is placed beyond the edges and sides of the home button. The tape will help keep the button seated properly and flushed, equally on both sides. Now as long as you massage and use the home button a few times a day, and remove the tape after a couple of weeks, the light will no longer protrude through the sides of the home button.
Black specks / Bezel Chrome Finish production errors?
- A lot of you may not be noticing this; only if you orient your phone at a particular angle, you may notice the chrome paint color inconsistency on the bezel (the chrome paint job was not done properly), black specks will show to some degree; now if it bothers you so much, put a case on. There is nothing you can do about it; all Note 2's have this quality control problem one way or the other.
- You don't have to worry if the metallic painting is not done properly behind the phone, as the back cover will conceal it.
Loose Volume Rocker control buttons / Power button?
- As long as you feel the button feedback and hear the button press on both volume and power keys, but feel that the buttons are loose, use a case, or massaging the buttons for a little while will help.
AMOLED Display Issues?

I will update this thread if I can think any more things to look out for when buying a Note 2. If you have any suggestions share them in this thread. Hopefully, someday, this thread can have a sticky.

Many have spotted small gaps between the bezel and the glass of the display. I have cross-checked with over '12' Note 2 pieces across several stores, and they all have this gap in various areas, (i.e. top of the unit, bottom of the unit, and near the power / volume controls).
Secondly, although I could not find this on my T-Mobile Note 2 (I even used a magnifying glass to confirm), some of you may have noticed that the bezel is NOT 100% molded. If you inspect closely, you will notice a joint at which it appears your bezel is cracked, but is not. You might find this disappointing, but according to Samsung standards, the joint appearance is completely normal. Some joints (meeting of both sides of the bezel) will be very prominent, and some will not (in the case of mine).
Unfortunately, Samsung does not have consistent quality control with their devices, and you will definitely spot manufacturing variations, but don't be alarmed.
You should really consider these variations as consistent according to Samsung's quality control.

Visiting the squeaking back cover again, this sometimes also occurs when the end-user forcefully removed the back-cover by chance. Treat your Note 2 with care.
However, some back-covers are indeed cheaply Made by Samsung, and the clippings are not always made consistently; therefore, you will see different results from unit to unit.

An XDA user had asked me if the Grey Note 2's are most affected,
I've seen over a dozen Note 2's and 'Grey appears is most affected." However, it is difficult to confirm because very few stores have the White Note 2 on display in my area. One store did have '2' White Note 2's for demonstration pieces, and I felt they were manufactured through better quality standards than the Grey Note 2.
However, the White Note 2's do indeed have the gap on top of the unit (very noticeable), and I felt like the White units heat up quite fast compared to Grey. The home button on the White Note 2 is not that recessed (feels quite elevated) compared to the Grey Note 2. The light on the capacitive buttons on the White Note 2 bleed very noticeable compared to the Grey.
Hey! One question! Just recieved my note 2 the other day - and I've found some sort of strange thing happening on the top right of the glass of the screen. It seems like there is this really tiny gap between the screen and the body.
Its almost as the screen is just the tad bit tiny on the upper right side! Is this something I should send my phone in for?

Everything you've listed is a reason to return the phone.
When paying this kind of money no matter what the imperfection is , it is unacceptable.
Would you keep a car with these imperfections. NO. why? Because is more expensive?
It does not matter. This phone for me is like buying an Aston Martin and accept it with manufacturing flaws. NEVER.

No device is perfect; unfortunately, Samsung's quality control is sub-par to Apple's; Plastic, that's all. There is no reason for you to return your phone for the above reasons, especially because you might get something worse in return.
What you are describing with the glass, is something you to show us by posting a picture.

There is nothing you can do about the above. If that makes you uncomfortable, I suggest buying a different phone model from a different company like LG and Apple.

Im sorry but I dont see any solutions in your posting that will make me not want to get my phone exchanged if it suffered those defects mentioned. It is also the users responsibility and within rights to refuse a replacement device if its also defective. im paying good money for quality here, I dont expect anything less in return interms of its build quality and after sale service.

You probably won't realize this, but almost all Samsung devices, particularly, the Note 2 have at least one of the above mentioned quality issues. Samsung's quality control has been and will always be questionable. Not enough people complain to Samsung to get these problems resolved. Chances are, you will realize the above mentioned quality issues along the way with the current device you are holding. The above mentioned problems have all been asked and discussed on this forum before; I consolidated all of these problems into one thread with solutions, to help others stick to their current Note 2's. Chances are, you might get something worse in return. Therefore, enjoy what you have; eventually, you will be transitioning onto some other phone in the near future. Cheers. :good:

Funny observation about the Note 2 bezel is that Apple fan-boys will probably think Samsung copied Apple with its bezel chrome-finish quality control paint issue (that too on a black / titanium grey model, similar to Apple's Black model), lol. Apple says, their iPhone 5 paint issue is normal; Samsung probably considers it the same. That's why I listed a solution in my 1st post, - Cheers.

I must be one lucky son of a gun then other than a tiny gap between the bezel and the screen, which was caused by a drop, I dont have any of those defects. I dont know if its a defect but I notice the phone is easy to flex and creaks but thats probably because of all that plastic.

I'm on my 3rd Note 2; has better build quality, thus far, I have no creaking what-so-ever, :good: The first Note 2 I had didn't have the light seeping between the home-button, but creaking was considerably there. However, most of the Units I have seen do have creaking and some light seeping through the home button. I have to say, though, the solutions I listed indeed work to rectify most of the problems most Note 2 owners eventually come across. Replacing the back-cover 'should' free away the creaking.

As for the back cover...I took off the back cover, tried and it still creaks. It must be from the housing frame. Checked my friends Tab 10.1 and its even worse. I think with the combo of size and plastic makes it bound to flex easily. Either way it doesnt really annoy me much. But I sure hope Sammy steps up its game with build quality in future releases in comparison to HTC and Sony.

I have none of the issues above aside from a slight screen uniformity issue seen on grey colors, everything else is great. Wish they would really up the quality control on the next generation screens.. at least is its miles better this time compared to the Galaxy S2 and Note 1.
I don't have any uniformity issues; something I remember EarlZ pointing out earlier on the N7000 forums last year. However, every Note 2 owner suffers from the Mura Effect, which varies from screen to screen. I just hope Samsung works on quality control on their future products or else they could be facing hurdles along the way.

Winlinmac I appreciate your attempt in helping us coupe with the defects on our Note 2 phones but my first question to you would be how much are you getting paid to write this? I am now on my 5th device. The first device was returned due to a failed volume rocker button. I had it in a Otterbox case and used it lightly. After few days the (lower) volume button fell in and was unusable. The second device I received arrived with a very noticeable dent on bezel and no it was not one of those discolorations you are talking about. It looked like someone had dropped it on the floor at the factory. I refused the return of the third device as the right corner of the plastic bezel looked like it was glued together and looked like it was not sanded/cut but rather painted over with plastic molding still sticking out it!.. The fourth device had a power button failure after few days of light use. It took me more than 5 attempts to turn the screen off at random times and no it’s not a software issue as the same issue occurred in Safe Mode. The sales rep confirmed the defect and exchanged the device. The fifth device I got is in a much better shape than the previous four; however, the "black" area around the LCD for some odd reason is wider on one side than the other. My wife also has the same phone and her Note 2 is also suffering from the bezel defects. I have lost tons of valuable time re-configuring and moving data on to my replacement phones not to mention pay for gas driving to exchange my devices. I understand what you are saying. I'm on my 3rd Note 2, and the Quality Control does indeed greatly differ. Unfortunately, Samsung is not Apple, and will never be when it comes to acknowledging it's own problems. The only way to voice your concern is to e-mail the CEO or prepare a Class Action Lawsuit. Unfortunately, many of us on XDA are not really that inclined to endorse such a thing since XDA is mainly a development forum; most of XDA's members, including me (frankly), change our phones every year, because that's how technology is revolving around us nowadays. I've had a Galaxy S, S2, & Note 1, in the past, and all ended up back to the store for full refunds only because of Samsung's Quality Control.
Now, when it comes to the Note 2, i really gave it a positive thought, and found solutions, to make my decision and transition easier to cope with. Whatever you described, I have come across as well. Samsung will learn some-day.
Now, I am only hopeful that I enjoy this phone for the remainder of this year.

I wanted to also mention, that I did come across one dummy unit today (Grey), and was surprised to see the same chrome-finish problems like the actual units. If you angle the bezel a bit, you will see the chrome finish vary a bit in different areas as a result of variations in the paint-finish.
You can scratch the bezel and paint will chip off, quite easily (Similar to Apple's iPhone 5 aluminum coating). However, keep in mind, the material used on the Note 2's bezel is different to some degree.

I know what you mean. On one of the phones I had, the silver finish was partially coming off. It's hard to explain but it looked like the coating was too thick on one side and didn't stick on the other, it could be easily scratched off with a nail.. I didn't want to take any chances with it since I was exchanging that unit. The truth is that majority of Note 2 phones have some sort of defect on them, some more than others and it just depends on the customers quality standards. You can tell my standards are pretty high, but you do not need to have a 20/20 vision to notice these defects. As I said earlier, if you feel that a phone with defects is worth $700 or more dollar's than it's your thing. I owned HTC N1 in the past and the quality of that device was much superior to Note 2. It's a shame that Samsung feels that it's customers should accept things as they are and continues the "defective" phone trend. I am still thinking whether I should keep my current (5th device) which has uneven black area around the LCD screen and has started lagging a times. This is something that even the case cannot cover. I have this week to make that decision as my 30 days will be up. I may just give up on Samsung completely but not without a fight. Writing a letter to the CEO...I wish there was a survey done on just how happy the customers are with Samsung's quality standards....Why not rename the this thread to something like "Your Note 2 is Defective? [Solutions To Common Quality Issues Found On Note 2]? I feel that the name of this thread is misleading....

I've had a Galaxy S, S2, & Note 1, in the past, and all ended up back to the store for full refunds only because of Samsung's Quality Control.
Now, when it comes to the Note 2, i really gave it a positive thought, and found solutions, to make my decision and transition easier to cope with. Whatever you described, I have come across as well. Samsung will learn some-day.
Now, I am only hopeful that I enjoy this phone for the remainder of this year.

I hope for the same... My 30 days are almost up and I am trying to make a decision to take a refund or simply keep it...exchanging for another phone seems like a foolish idea as my next one may be in a worse shape... the sad truth is that there is nothing better on the market than Note 2 and I really like this phone....if not for the defects. Unlike you and many others, I like to keep my devices for two or three years before upgrading...I guess this is why I feel that this is a big thing for me....staring at a defective phone for the next several years if you know what I mean....

By mura effect if you mean those lines/blotches seen on dark/black colors, I have none.
I wanted to exchange my unit but I considered that I might get a unit with far worse problem, I rarely see the uniformity issue on greys its usually visible only when i press the menu button on the home screen. I'll probably have my display replaced at around 9 months from now. Really pleased with the display so far as compared to my previous devices.
Even if you don't have the lines / blotches, the Mura still exists, you just can't distinguish them as they are in the form of stains this time (takes up most of the display; explains why blacks are blacker in a dark setting compared to the S2 and Note 1); these panels are not embedded with the technology from Ignis Innovation.
