[Q] last fast (really) android version?

ok, we have a nexus, so we deserve updates and we have them....that's why we bought a nexus no?....
yes....but every update is a hit for our device's performance...I thought that last one would fix performance issues, but is not .
so...I bought one of these to my gf, sure that it would work well, I owned one a year ago and it was very good! nope....is slow, lags, remembers me a 100$ cheap tablet.
I considered to downgrade....is frustrating...what version do you remember as stunning fast, like a nexus should be?
4.1? damn, is too 2012-ish....
4.2? old but at least we have tiles on notification drawer...
4.3? good, some performance goodies, hw vsync...
4.4? I thought this would be the best choice because in theory is optimised for 512mb ram devices too....but was not performing well
5.0? don't say nothing...pff
I also read about f2fs as a revolution, but is not my tablet and my gf uses it for study and I can't take it to test...

My 2012 Nexus 7 (wifi) I had been on Android 4.4.4 when I updated to Android 5.0 using Wugs nexus root tool kit.
It had been sluggish on Kit Kat, but got more so when I went to Lollipop, even with a full wipe.
After about a week on 5.0 I rolled back to Android 4.3, and have been happy since.

Everyone is having different experiences and mine personally is that 5.0 is running greater for me then 4.4.4. That was with a complete full wipe (including data) when I flashed the image through wugs toolkit. There were initially bouts of lag (waking up screen, lock screen, etc) but the lags pretty much gone bar a few occasions. 5.0.1 will hopefully make the system more stable and not repeat what happened with 4.4.4 because my n7 ran like a pig after that update.

And how are you with 4.3? Perfect? I'm really considerino a downgrade....
I will try forma the last time a full wipe and factory image, and then downgrade until I'm satisfied.

I have just updated my n7 to Slim rom 5.0.1.
I have been frustrated by not being able to read a simple email using gmail application. Lags, lags, and "gmail is not responding do you want to close it"
I need to have two accounts for me and my wife, so the performance was even more slow.
Now with f2fs it is a rocket. I have installed every toolvI wanted and now also the Godfire game, and I must admit that it was a hit.
So thank you google to slow our machines to force buying the new ones, but my nexus7 from 2012 acts lighning fast now.

ok....I have to format on f2fs....that's the only way....
than...con you tell me how to do that? and also, I want to flash stock lollipop, no custom roms...
I read some but guides were outdated...and, FYI I am very experienced on flashing, so I will not take you much time

Not sure if stock can be ran on f2fs.
I installed slim rom and itis close to aosp.
Instruction is provided in the rom thread.
I am no very experienced and I handled without problems.

Even on my m8 lp performs bad, considering that is stock and my phone was on the top of benchmarks before nex 6 and 9 came out..

No, I don't have it. I just asked is there slim lollipop on f2fs, because I tried rastapop and SleamFreak which are on 5.0 and have f2fs support, but I had problems like rebooting, problem with installing new apps, etc.
So for now, till I get answer from user emmyhi, I back to slimkat KK which run fantastic on our Nexus 7.

SlimPop (f2fs) by Freak is great. very fast.

Yes, I can agree with you that is really fast, but I had a problem with gapps (downloaded one's give in thread) and I couldn't install Google play store (it wasn't installed with gapps???)
I couldn't resolve my problem with that, and also, even I did clean install I haven't got screen like I first time use this rom. I haven't got possibility to chose language, and everything else. Rom just moved me to homescreen. Maybe this is not for this thread, but, I'll wait some other version of slim on 5.0.

Did you try SlimGapps Normal one from the op link. That worked fine for me. You first flash the Rom. Boot. Go to recovery again. than flash Gapps. Boot. You will get the initialisation screen.

I will try an evening every factory image and a kk f2fs rom to see which one performs better...then I'll let you know!

I'm running stock rooted 4.4.4 kitkat on mine with Lean Kernel 4.1. No lag, no issues with apps not working like on 5.0. Good battery life ,watched over 5 hours of movies last night and still had 49% left from a full charge. Standby time is excellent, I've only lost 2% over the last 9 hours.

that stock one with f2fs?

No, not here. Pure stock, rooted 4.4.4 KitKat. Removed a few Google apps I don't use, but still ext4. Lean Kennel really make a difference.

and....after a flashing afternoon....
4.2.2 stock was damn fast....
4.3 stock was even faster and smoother than 4.2.2
4.4 was worse......got better with lean kernel, but wasn't just fast and responsive enough.
the winner is....4.3......that's what I left on my gf's tablet....
everything runs good, apps opening instantly, look much 2013 but google launcher and google keyboard help...
this is my suggestion after my tests. good luck and hope next LP ota will fix some performance issues, not only on this one but for every phone which got slower with this update

How to downgrade the software version?

I've read a lot of threads about upgrading software on this phone but I'm not really sure how to downgrade it. I would want to play around with different versions of android to find which one suits me the best. I will get A2017G version. Can you help me?

Pretty sure if you're on Nougat you can flash MM B11 to go back. That's the latest MM. You lose Daydream on MM if that's of any concern.
I use Nougat, won't be using MM.

Battery life isn't really something consistent among different phones. Sometimes your installation will run like utter crap, and the way to fix it would be by installing a custom ROM (you can get around 7h SOT with a well set up system; like an EAS kernel, Swift Black, and LOS-based stuff like RR) and either stay on custom or go back to stock. Also you can use MiFlash to reinstall the stock system without actually needing to go custom then return.
I had this little thing where I went custom just to try, I used it for 3 months, and then I decided to go back to B10 Marshmallow. After using MiFlash to get B10 working, the phone would randomly reboot roughly once every two hours. I updated to latest Nougat, then even downgraded, but there was no way to fix that. The only thing that helped me was to install custom again then go back to stock. MiFlash might also do the trick though

Was on BO4 and updated to B08, saw no real difference between.
I had some funny stuff with dual SIMs being unreliable then realised I couldn't send a multimedia message. The update messed up my apn settings a tiny bit but I fixed that and been fine since.

Hi there. I am kinda new on these things.
I am at my home right now. I have the time to backup everything.
I am on stock right now , I have started getting a bit of lags here and there.
Should I root and install a custom rom?
And if yes , what is the best combination of kernel and rom for the best performance and battery.

DO NOT INSTALL CUSTOM ROM, if you have to ask that question.
On a serious note, a factory reset will take care of all lags.Rooting is for those who have a spare phone,want to play around and can afford brick sooner or later. Moto has determined stock to be best for all others.

I am not so new dude. I have installed custom roms many a times..on my canvas a1.
On that device , it was good bcoz the device itself wasn't so good.
But this moto g5 plus is a nice phone. That's why I'm asking whether i should install custom rom or not

Acknowledged !! and my apologies.
Rooting and custom roms work well on MotoG+.On some of the latest Oreo roms I was playing around with in the past couple of months,the camera app broke more often than once.If you can live with that in exchange for performance, LineageOS 15 and Pixel Experience roms worked great.
But as with any phone, you have to play around for the best of latest or for stability.
Just my two cents .

Install only if a stock firmware higher or equivalent to your current version is available. Else you will not be able to go back to stock. If you attempt to downgrade you will run into problems with bootloaders.

Battery life is pretty good on the custom rom side. All updated ROMs are now Android 8.1 and are 64 bit. I usually get 6-7+ hours screen on time and switch between every rom that's released For battery and customizations I recommend AEX or Validius. Also, you can use greenify on any of the custom ROMs and root with magisk and pass safety net as well. I Also recommend you download from telegram group as those links are updated more often than xda.

I believe that using custom kernel was the fix to that issue, not 100% sure as I never had the issue myself. Also, if you decide to go to a custom rom you won't have that issue (it only affects stock rom). Another option if you want to stick on stock is find the thread on here for TWRP flashable stock ROMs and use latest one for your phone.

I'm not able to select SD card storage in the recovery mode. What's the issue here? How do I fix it?

nevermind. I updated twrp to 3.2.1.0 . Now i can use my sd card there.

[GUIDE][addison] SETUP Moto z play XT1635-02 : from stock 6.0 to custom ROM.

I have the habit of always asking on a new device no matter how much I think I know!
I have an xt1635-02 (I am US ATT Prepaid)(nano SIM) supposedly here tomorrow so I've been reading tons here.
However, it seems that a lot of the threads are aimed at rooting stock, which I never do.
As a rule, it's trivial:
[!] In this case it seems best to OTA update stock to 7.1.1 if it isn't already. I believe bootloader must be 7.x.x for doing custom Oreo ROMs . Since mine was 6.0 it took about 8 updates OTA and maybe 2 hours(wifi) .
[!]I go to moto site and do the unlock bootloader dance (already carrier unlocked supposedly).

This modifies stock. Else your backups of stock won't boot. Learned this the hard way!

I usually consider 2 root options; SuperSU 2.82-SR5, or majisk 1520. (for future readers, these are the latest at this time.)(besides I'm very used to them.)
With SuperSU I have had no probs wiping all 4(Dalvik/ART, system, data, cache), flash ROM, flash 8.1 gapps, flash SUperSU, and boot to install.
With majisk I have sometimes had troubles during install if I flash majisk in the first batch so I tend to wipe all 4, flash ROM and gapps, and boot to install. Then when I finally hit desktop, boot back to TWRP and flash 1520 and reboot.
I need root to use TBPro - no restoring on first time with this 64bit ROM- got to do it the hard way!
SO I believe that's it, but if anyone sees a flaw or problem in there, I would appreciate your help.

yep look right, i would have added backup EFS and Modem partitions, if you want to be completely safe.
For now, open gapps 8.1 are only unofficial, i would feel a bit unsecure to use that, but it's only me.

Yes, forgot to add that - did much xda search on the efs thing and best I found seemed to be a twrp-3.1.1-0-EFS-addison.img which I may very well flash first and do that since no other TWRP that I looked at offers backup efs. Official and squid2 derived (G3) don't. I assume Alberto's doesn't. Seems like I did it very manually on the G3. If you have it it's a pretty good guarantee that you'll never need it! (Murphy axiom)
As to unofficial gapps, I've been testing about 5 different 8.1 ROMs on the Moto G3 over the past couple months and if the gapps aren't built in to the ROM(some pixelexperience roms), all you can get is an unofficial gapps, or do a minor simple hack to an 8.0 so it will accept it. Usually devs will include it. Bless Alberto97 for not including it so I can select my own!!! But I've had no prob with gapps. Open gapps project has 8.0, but of course they won't work on a true 8.1 unless minor hack. I was planning on using open_gapps-arm64-8.1-aroma-20180109-UNOFFICIAL.zip (from https://cloud.kenzoroms.club/?dir=opengapps) unless you have a better idea. I wanted to grab camera from aroma(somebody's idea), but I also have about 5 other cameras and gcams waiting on the Sdcard that I want to test, simply because there seemed to be disagreement on what works on Alberto's new 8.1 build, so wanted to be able to report.

Thanks for great link! yeah I think I used adb as well as an app last time. I'll add recovery this time so that's 3 backups on internal storage (and copied to PC) should be enough! (yes dear readers I am serious about this - 3 times! They are so tiny! And that pretty much guarantees I'll never need it, but if I do, it's childs play to get it back.)

If you're wondering about the delay, they sent me a -01 (Droid)(Murphy's law), so they paid for a UPS next day air label back to them(mailed at 4PM) - don't know if I'll get this going before Sat! Oh well!!! Never take these things too seriously!!! Gotta be costing them a chunk! I did briefly turn it on and stuck the SIM in it and it did show LTE on my ATT, but there's a few bands missing that are on the -02, so will wait. Pretty display, though!!! Really looking forward to it!!!

yes. stock 8.x is a no-no. This one that is coming is 6.0.1 So I will let it ota update to 7.1.1 after giving it a thorough check-out, then try unlocking it, etc. Sound right? I have no interest in any of the hardware-type addons, just the plain phone 3/32 octacore etc. Why this one? - I love the reception (radio) strength of Motos, plus a ton of other things. I stick with them. Plus it's all Albeto97's fault for deving on AOSP 8.1

I think they are. He recently came out with an 8.1 AOSP version for the Moto G3 and I love it. I test others, but that's my daily driver. Sure not perfect, but quite good enough for me!!! So I figure when I get it (Tues?) that's what I'll put on it. There's always plenty of time to test others!

Okay, since I am waiting for phone (Tues) , obviously I am worried about "what-if"s and so researching on what to do, "if".
I succeeded in finding a nice zip for 7.1.1 with the Nov security patch

That took a lot of time.
Then I needed to be sure that I could get RSD lite to run, and tried and tried to no avail to get it to recognize my phone (even on my laptop) (I was testing with an old Moto G3 stock zip and my G3 phone) before some post gave me a version number much higher than at the RSD site. google gave me:

I really need to write a short guide on this stuff - feels like I'm re-inventing the wheel, even though many folks have written much before I came along!
The reason for the above two is that for a while the last few days I kept running into folks who had taken 7 OTA and wound up with a bricked phone. So, yes, I just did a search for "brick" on xda in moto z play and will start reading them! LOL
Quick EDIT: I think I am wrong in that brick assumption - the first 3 I looked at involved encryption and 2 downgrades to MM (which is a no-no). I will read further.
edit2 - nevermind - most are downgrading to MM. Wish folks would just ask before doing that. That is a no-no of most (all?) phones. -

YES! Will do. I have about 5 cameras that I want to try though I will stop at the first one that works. Phone should be here today.

I have no problem with various cameras getting good image, but sometimes on still first pic doesn't save. ( tried camera MX and Professional camera hd. I'm sure lots work about the same.)

Forgot to flash Alberto's verity patch right after flashing TWRP. So I had to RSD lite 7.1.1 Nov 1 and start over - no big deal! OP corrected.

To root or to not root?

Hi everyone,
I've been using my OP5 for the past year and now I've exhausted my full 64Gb of storage. Was planning to backup my data onto my laptop and start afresh but I thought it is time to root. I've rooted pretty much every phone I've had in the past for some or the other reason like increasing battery life, overclocking, debloated roms for more storage etc. etc.
I have been technologically dead for the past 2 years so I'm kind of lost right now and in confusion on as to whether to root or not? What would be the main advantages I'd be getting if I root. My phone is still blazing fast, has amazing battery life and OOS is really smooth.
Just in a lot of confusion and want to find more reasons to root.

If you have to ask, you don't need it.

If you root your phone you'll be able to actually use your phone. The only disadvantage to rooting your phone that I see would be that whenever I see a new rom, I want to flash it. I've never understood why somebody would not want to root their phone. Maybe warranty? But then again, I think there are ways around that?

Should have seen a reply like this coming my way. Buddy, I've rooted every other phone I've had in the past. Either for updates, better battery life, smoother ram management and so on.. The only thing I couldn't understand is this phone isn't lacking in any of the above mentioned points including updates **touch wood** so wanted to understand others thought process on the advantages cause I am unaware of all the cool mods you can do at the moment, if there are any.

Thank you, this was helpful.. I don't see why i shouldn't root it too. I'll probably be rooting too. Which Rom would you suggest for stability and everyday usage with some good extra additional functionality?

My favorite rom is Codename Phoenix. It's fast and it's not on XDA, which is probably why I like it. It's got a lot of features. If there is a feature a rom doesn't have you can always get Xposed or something to enable.
But the main reason for rooting my phone is so that I can use gcam properly. I love Photoshop and gcam offers the best photos. In my opinion, far better than stock or any other.

There's an option just to flash a custom ROM and leave it unrooted ?
I can recommend Resurrection Remix unofficial. Simply followed the steps with unlocking the bootloader and gaining root on stock ROM, then flashed a custom ROM without rooting it.
If you thought battery life was great with stock OOS you're going to be pretty surprised with battery at Resurrection Remix and Flash Kernel ?

The best combination of stability and improved battery life is between the stock stable OxygenOS paired with the latest Franco kernel. I have tried pretty much all of the custom ROMs but every time the battery life of my phone was getting worse (compared to fully stock) until I tried stock OOS with Franco Kernel. But I have to say that I only have rooted my phone to use the Franco Kernel Manager and I do not have any add-ons into Magisk. Root + Franco and everything else is stock. I am not flashing new roms/kernels like crazy and really often, because the stable OOS is getting released once in two or even three months. Franco's kernel is being updated, hm, let's say once in a month or two months. So 99% of the time you are going to use your phone without flashing anything new.
