Hi everyone, I have a nexus 6p still running 6.0.1 with an unlocked bootloader, I got the notification for the 7.0 update, but I don't know if I can install it with the bootloader unlocked. Is it possible or do I have to lock the bootloader first?
Yes, bootloader can be unlocked. If you have modified system in any way, it may not apply the update though. I.E. if you are using twrp or you changed any system files.

My bootloader has been unlocked since the day I got my 6P. I restored back to stock MM today, flashed the newest TWRP and joined the android beta pgm to get the N OTA. Worked like a charm, no issues whatsoever.

Just so I can make sure I pass on correct info for the future, the OTA installed by itself with twrp installed? Or did you push it via fast boot?
I went a different route and installed Nougat via a ROM (tried both Stock+ and digital Hugh's versions), so for me it was hardly any different than installing any other ROM.

Yes to the OTA installed with twrp installed, it rebooted into the twrp recovery and then did some patches, etc. rebooted updated apps and hello nougat! I did have to reflash twrp after I booted back up, it did wipe it out.
I was debating about flashing digital Hugh's rom, how do you like it so far?
Good to know, thanks.
I've used aosp based Roms for so long, stock took a little getting used to. But I don't know if I will be going back to aosp now.
Digitalhigh's ROM is very smooth, and it's setup "out of the box" to allow root and android pay (albeit you have to toggle root off when you want to use AP). That's one feature I've always missed out on W aosp.
That said, there are a couple small issues some people are experiencing, clock updating the time only every 3-5min, and some having issues with vipermod not working system wide. I haven't experienced any of those. Plus he's already working on an update to allow for centered status bar clock as well as some other features.
I personally recommend giving it a shot if you want Nougat, worst that happens is you have to nandroid restore a backup.
*Edit* and he already has the night mode built into it, as well as the new nexus launcher if I'm not mistake.
Wouldn't let me attach this in an edit for some reason. That's with 4 hours screen on time, only reason you see that little charging bump is i was backing up a few files to my PC.
Thanks for the answers, just tried to update and everything was installed :good:

Thanks for the detailed reply, you may have pushed me over the edge and I may give it a try. Ive been on Benzo rom across my last 3 phones and got used to all the goodies. But using 7 the last day I find it; very fast, been a fan of Pay when it worked with systemless, can't comment on battery yet but seems decent. I may give it a day or 2 and flash digitialhighs rom, it seems like it gives me Pay with minor hassle and is close to stock. Again thanks.
I'm planning to downgrade to MM due to the hideous Android OS and Android System battery draining. Getting hardly 2 hours of SOT with very light use. Anyway I know that I'll have to flash the factory image but there are a lot of model types and I don't know which to download. So how do I know the variant and is there a difference between them and is there a certain model famous for the battery drain bug while the others are working fine?

If you are going down to Marshmallow surely just go to the last version of MM
https://developers.google.com/android/images#angler
Grab - 6.0.1 (MTC20L)
I don't think battery drain was that much of an issue on MM but could be wrong, someone else may recommend a different build but i'd go with the last build. before nougat.

There have been rumors about a bricks while downgrading?
I am not rooted , no custom recovery, unlocked bootloader. So that should be okay right?
Can't see how bricking is possible. Unlock, flash, lock. Done a thousand times.

I downgraded using the listed build with no issues. Battery issues appear to be resolved too. Can't get over how poorly optimised 7.1.1 was.
Regards.

You will be fine use the instructions on the sticky by Heisenberg and just use the files from that zip of the build i mentioned.
Hey, guys.
I want to downgrade to MM too because of the same battery drain reason. I'm running the latest PureNexus 7.0
I was on RR before. I'm rooted, unlocked, latest TWRP. Can I just flash my old RR Rom and the MM vendor image?
Holy Hell... I come here periodically to check whether battery drain has been solved. One of the reasons I chose a Nexus for was to get timely security updates. Tying them to a sub-par version of the OS ends up negating the advantage for me. How can Google mess up battery so much, after all the talk about battery life improvements with Nougat?

They were to busy with the pixel to care about providing to Nexus owners.
On topic I used the above factory image to downgrade my completely stock, locked, and not rooted 6P without issues.

For the record, I just flashed the MM vendor image and RR rom via TWRP and everything booted just fine and is running smooth. Didn't have to flash the stock rom. I'll just leave this here in case there's someone else looking for a solution
Mine model is 935FD, INDIA. Samsung pushed the update today and I installed, however, not liking the notifications style. I want to go back to Marshmallow. Is it possible by flashing MM stock firmware via ODIN. I know people have done it (have seen some YouTube videos) but those people were on beta firmware of Noughat, not on final official one. Lastly, if nobody knows the definitive answer and still I want to take the plunge, what worst can happen?
yes u can
You can just flash back to Nougat.
But personally I think you're mad. Nougat is far better than MM. beter battery, better performance, better functions.
I have successfully downgraded, however, all my data was lost. Thankfully I had backup so I restored. It is a matter of personal preference so I think I'm not mad IMHO

Xposed doesnt work. That's why I dont move to nougat... I want amplfy, adblocker, appopsxposed, disable chargin led, fingerlock, gravitybox, greenefy, powernap, xtouchwiz... those apps worth staying in MM. (for me)
So i'am getting my Axon 7 in some days.
I don't really wanna stay stock, but also dont want to run any unstable rom.
So i was thinking about flashing RR + A.R.I.S.E..
Can you recommend me any rom, kernel, mod?
And are there any rom compatible restrictions for the different models?
thx
Hmm i recommend you stock because when you switch to custom you will not get full Axon 7 experience (especially audio) you will not get 100% audio in custom like in stock. Stock isn't bad - nearly like clean Android despite may 2 or 3 APS that you can disable in system. Said far I have Axon since December and firstly I want to switch to custom but I will if Axon will not get Oreo and custom will have Oreo. So as far - most stable and usefully in everyday use is stock.

Hope you got an A2017U - both the G and chinese versions don't have any kernels made for them. I'd also advise staying on stock. There's a Dual boot patcher, seems like a good idea if you want to run another OS besides stock.
But I tell you, no other ROM runs like Stock does right now. and it's been more than a year since they launched the phone, so at least until Android O launches I wouldn't expect that to change

Nope, you're getting the A2017G
I have one, and besides the lack of kernels, I can't complain really. It works.

I think i can live without a custom kernel.
Then i think i wont even root, because unlocking bootloader looks kinda messy to me.
Still have my Nvidia Tab's to play around with so the Axon 7 can stay completly stock.

It's not that messy if you use Controllerboy's guide or maybe axon7toolkit (it should do it all by itself)

They are. Actually the guide is ONLY for the A2017G.
And OTAs are broken out of the box but you just download the official ZIP and put it on the root of the internal storage or the SD and go to Updates, and it does the process just like an OTA. You can also do this to upgrade or downgrade to MM, even if your device is fully stock, locked bootloader and everything
I live in France and bought mine with Amazon from Germany. So it's a G model. Stock works fine and I think you really don't need to root this device. I've only change the launcher by Nova which brings a much better user experience.

Well if you want to get back the best way is to drop an official full update zip from ZTE on the internal storage, use a flashable recovery zip like those tron1 makes, then use TWRP's reboot to recovery button, and flashing that update zip through there.
My way to RR was the bad battery and sot on stock. I got 4 hrs but that's not enough for me.

Then i think i will root.
To unlock bootloader and flash TWRP with the Toolkit.
1. Do i have to dowgrade to mm to use the toolkit or should it work with latest OTA?
2. Can i still flash the Updates with twrp?

1. Just try to use it. I expect it to workk, but never used it myself. Better ask @bkores
2. Usually you can, the best way is to flash tron1's flashable OTAs (if you have TWRP) cause he gets rid of the recovery file though. If you try to flash an official zip with TWRP it might work (i flashed full B04), but TWRP will get replaced with the official recovery. You just flash it again
1) Stay STOCK
2) Avoid completely unlock the phone, root, etc etc
3) Buy a U (American) version
4) Stay STOCK !!!

I'm currently running the latest version of PureNexus and debating installing Android Oreo. Are there any huge downsides? Is it buggy, slow, etc? In other words, is it daily driver ready for someone who uses their phone all day for music, video, games, EVERYTHING and still wants to tweak the os to their needs.

Unless you're worried about the security updates, just stay on PN. PN for Oreo should be out soon as well.
That makes a lot of sense, thanks.

I was on PN since I got my 6P and updated to Oreo as soon as it came out. I don't regret the decision at all. Battery life is as good or better than PN (I routinely end the day with 4+ hours of SOT and 35-40% left. Your experience may vary depending on usage), performance is wonderful, and I haven't found any major bugs yet. All of my favorite mods work (EX kernel, Pixel mod, Camera NX, WakeBlock, and a few others I'm forgetting).
The only downside is some modifications require a bit more work. For example, to resize the navigation bar and add dynamic coloring I had to extract, modify, and push framework-res.apk instead of having those options built right into the settings menu. There's no custom quick settings tiles and I can't change the number of rows/columns, but that isn't a big deal and I've learned to live without it for now.
As stated above PN based on Oreo should be out within the next month or two. Beans posted an announcement on G+ yesterday explaining that he had a family emergency that slowed down development on PN O, but he is actively working on it as much as he can.

I went from PN to 8.1. Honestly, stick with PN. I used it for a couple days and I am downgrading right now. My battery life was significantly worse (on 7.1.2 I ended the day at ~40-50% battery. On 8.1 I was at ~20-30). I didn't notice anything great about Oreo and found myself missing PN.

I had that issue too. Spent waaaayyy to long trying to figure it out. I think 8.1 has a different encryption method. You need to wipe the phone completely and then do a nandroid restore (or flash PN)

Don't mean to sound like a complete noob, but how did you go on about wiping the phone completely? I've now tried so many things, reflashing TWRP, reinstalling stock firmwares, using Wug's Nexus Rooting kit, ... I can acces fastboot, what do I need to do to be able to reinstall TWRP? Because when I try it right now, I can't acces it. It goes back into the boot loop.

In TWRP, format /Data and the internal storage. I also formatted /system just to be safe.
