Hi, everyone!
What are the advantages and disadvantages of custom rom for Lg G6?
Now, do you want me to do custom rom or not?
honestly, I'm torn.
And what do you suggest I do?
So thank you all very much, Sparcky
Believe it or not, stock rom with root is good enough these days. In my opinion.

Advantages and disadvantages of custom rom
If you have been part of the Android pool for any time, the chances of you hearing the term “custom ROM” is very high. A few months back, I gave a synopsis of rooting. I told what it was and gave its advantages and disadvantages. You may recall that the ability to flash custom ROMs was among the long list of benefits of rooting your Android phone.
DISADVANTAGES
Just as before, I am going to begin with the disadvantages of custom ROMs so that I don't waste the time of the faint of heart, and so you will know just what you are risking. Take the disadvantages seriously. If you do not know what you are doing, you risk turning your shiny, new, Android phone into a very expensive paperweight.
The first and most important drawback to custom ROMs is that you will void your warranty in the processes prior to flashing the ROM. As you may recall, simply rooting your device will void the manufacturer's warranty, and that processes is a prerequisite for flashing a custom ROM. The important disadvantage of custom ROMs is there are usually so many options, it's hard to decide on which one to go with. The solution to this is do your homework. ROMs that aren't widely known are risky and better left for the daring. Also, there is nothing stopping you from trying all of the different ROMs. If you try a ROM that you don't like, reload your backup image or try another.
ADVANTAGES
Now that we have that part out of the way, we can get into the juicy stuff. What is all the hype about? What makes ROM flashing so beneficial to the end user? What is possible when flashing custom ROMs? There are many questions that can be asked and just as many possibilities when using custom software. I'm going to try to cover the most important topics.
The biggest complaint about Android to date is no just fragmentation, but the slow firmware upgrades coming from manufacturers. Official software has to be sent through rigorous testing and numerous levels of approval from the manufacturer and carrier before it reaches users' hands. This can take and usually does take several months.
The most important part is knowing your risks. Always follow instructions intently. Deviating from a developer's set of instructions is asking for trouble. If something goes wrong, there is no one to blame but yourself.
How are you going to use your device?
IMO, if you use your device like most people, I think you can live with a stock ROM.
Moreover, if you are torn, what are the issues you are facing currently with your device? If these issues can be solved by installing a custom ROM, you provided your own answer.
Multiple choice, more fun!
I tried Fulmics, which is stock ROM plus tweaks, and eventually went back to stock ROM with root because it seemed more stable. I haven't tried any of the AOSP-based ROMs yet. I will give Fulmics one more try soon, but honestly the only thing I really miss on the stock ROM is text navigation arrow keys on the navbar when there's a keyboard active, and that's not in Fulmics either.
I might try LineageOS eventually just because they've fixed KRACK and nobody else has yet. But unless Fulmics or an AOSP-based ROM really wow me in some way, I wouldn't really have too much problem staying on rooted stock.

I agree.
You also might lose some features going to another ROM.
I've had my unlocked US997 for about a month now and didn't bother unlocking the bootloader.
The only things that were missing were ad blocking and being able to change colors of notification.
I found a non-root ad block solution and I can live without the other.
Previously I needed root to tether, but I switched to a newer plan and not that's not an issue.
Stock ROM with or without root.

If you're on the stock ROM, or a stock-based ROM like Fulmics, you don't. That's why I miss it; I'm on the stock ROM.
It's a feature I've seen in AOSP and CAF ROMs on other phones. Basically it adds left and right arrows to the navigation bar when there's a keyboard up, so you can move the cursor around easily.
LineageOS might have it. I don't know, I haven't looked. But I think it was originally a Cyanogenmod invention that got kanged around, so it makes sense that LineageOS might.

The basic ingredient missing in the "custom rom" is "wide angle" of camera ...It's may as well be an anathema.

Advantage: better battery life, better looks and way smoother
disadvantage: cant use both camera's
I am running lineage os on h870 and i get easy 2 days battery life out of it (i disabled almost all background procceses and location and ****)

You can get better battery life with a stock ROM and a custom kernel.
You can skin the ROM with custom settings (Xposed) and something like Nova Launcher.
I can live with the custom ROM on phones that don't have a ridiculously modified OS. LG and Samsung, just to name a couple do so many modifications that I really miss LOS.

Is it crazy to buy and use this phone rooted and running AOSP only. I am on Verizon with a Galaxy Nexus and unlimited data. The phone now sells for $450. I love AOSP, but being on Verizon the closet that I can get is continuing with my rooted Galaxy Nexus or buying a Moto X or Razr to get as close to stock as possible. The hardware of the G2 is better than both, yet I do not like LG's version of Android. My thought is buy this phone root and install AOSP immediately. Is that crazy or am I talking to just talking to the other inmates in the asylum?

Some have issues getting ROMs to flash on the 12B for VZW update. But over time all the ROMs will have that fixed. The ROM community seem to have most of the bugs fixed or they're working on fixing them. I'd say give some a try.

I have a Verizon G2 as well, lasted maybe an hour before I rooted and installed a ROM. Most of the big issues with 4.4.2 ROMs have been fixed (or are very close to being fixed). Favorite 4.4.2 ROMs so far are OSE, Beanstock and Mahdi. They all run smooth and have lots of customization options! Ayysir's PAEK Kernel runs great on these ROMs too! Will allow you to overclock/underclock the processor.

This is good to hear. It sounds like G2 is the next best thing to having a Nexus on Verizon. At least I know I am not crazy or at least no alone in wanted to root and rom immediately.
I'm an AOSP guy as well, also on Verizon. I mostly prefer AOSP because I like to customize myself and it's a lot easier to do with AOSP ROMs. They're also fast and light. So I was surprised when I really liked the stock LG ROM a lot. Ran Malladus, modified stock, for a while. So maybe give it a couple days, can't hurt. But now I'm on 4.4.2, I eventually wanted my AOSP. I'd say go for it. If you just want stable AOSP, Paranoid Android is a solid bet. It's not full of all the PA features yet. It ran rock solid for me. But even the feature/customization packed Beanstalk ROM I'm running now has been solid. And I'm sure it'll get even better once official 4.4 comes out and brings along updated proprietary stuff. I agree with you, it's the best bet on Verizon right now. I like the Moto X but the G2's camera, screen and battery life blow it out of the water. And I feel like it's a lot more future proof. As others have said 12B can be quirky, there are some modified recovery builds in the Verizon board that may help, I haven't looked at them recently as I rooted from 12A. If you get it and it's on 12A, it may be worth not taking the update just to avoid any issues, although I'm sure they'll be ironed out soon. You can always flash the 12B radio on your own if you want it.

Thank you. This is exactly what I was hoping to hear. The battery and camera are hard to ignore especially when they are two of my biggest issues with my Galaxy Nexus. Hardware you cannot change, but software.... I will check out PA, CM and the other AOSP options available. I guess I better research and prepare for 12B just in case it is already updated.
I'm a huge AOSP fanboy. The reason I bought the G2 (Verizon) was because of the availability of ASOP ROMs. With that said, I've fallen in love with the stock LG ROM. Once you debloat and add some modifications (I suggest G2 Xposed) you have a stock looking ROM that runs fast and bug free. Despite fantastic efforts from our talented developers, you're going to run into bugs and other quirks with custom ROMs. With the stock ROM things just work.
Regardless of what you do, you'll really enjoy this phone. Welcome to the club.
When I bought mine it was already rooted and flashed with CM11. I purchased it from swappa that way. I actually recently loaded up stock just to test it and stock is so feature packed. I threw on nova launcher and an icon pack wow. Phone is such a beast on stock.
I told the guy to ship it with cm11 I'm a huge aosp fanboy but stock is good.

What bothers me the about stock is the notification shade and how cluttered it appears and no multitasking soft key. I would try stock with minor tweaks if I could fix those issues.

I hear what you're saying. Which is why G2 Xposed is so fantastic. Check out my screenshots. First is with one finger swipe down. Second is with two fingers. Also note the inclusion of a multitasking button in place of the menu button LG included in stock. Not trying to change your mind. To each his own. Just trying to convey the message, from one AOSP cult follower to another, that the LG stock ROM is actually pretty useful.

Rear buttons are fine. I actually prefer the layout now. They're weird at first, but in less than a day you'll be used to them. Plus the knock on/off feature means you won't use them much anyway.

Rear keys are still borked, but Knock-On I never use the power button and I've always let Tasker manage my volume levels.
I used stock for one day just to check the phone out, used AOKP 4.3 since. Works great.

Sounds like 'to each their own...' regarding the rear keys, yet they do not appear to be a deal breaker or keeping you from enjoying the phone.
I recently read a review that praised the hardware, yet cursed the software. They even commented that this phone is probably better for people who root phones. I am looking forward to doing so.
I recently got this 6P, commingled from a rooted, unlocked, cm13 HTC one m9, would it be worth it to still root? I loved tweaking my m9, unfortunately it was an att version. So it was really hard to find Roms and tweaks that worked for it. I love my 6P so far and it performs wonderfully, just lacks that extra bit of tweaking.

I don't think it's necessary to overclock the 6P. The most popular kernels are probably Franco's if battery life is your main concern or Elemental if you want more control over performance than you get with the stock kernel. I increased my battery life a bit by switching to Elemental but I didn't use any settings that would negatively affect performance, which is more important to me than battery life. Pure Nexus is a very popular Rom, although I didn't personally have a good experience with that one. I'm happy with Cortex. Some people prefer Megapixel. There's lots of custom ROMs depending on what you are looking for. Just browse through the development threads on XDA.

Ive been thinking about it for a while now, had everything downloaded. thanks, just installed Lineage OS.
It was not worth to root, actually, until Nougat was released. I remember getting very quick updates, that were actually improving user experience. I was actually a very pro-stock person, but recently i rooted my phone and installed Pure Nexus. Not going to stock anytime soon
IMO there is plenty to keep your tweaking urge satisfied even if you choose to just run the stock rom, rooted with a good kernel. Monthly updates, great root apps and rock solid. Regardless, you'll definitely want to unlock the bootloader and enable USB debugging. Don't worry about the persistent boot nag screen about locking the bootloader- It's normal. Best of luck.
Hi Guys, I've unlocked the phone and rooted as well. Running megapixel ROM now and I'm very pleased with the pixel experience.
Only thing that bothers my OCD is the warning screen when I turn on the phone that says phone cannot be checked for corrupted software or something. It says to lock the bootloader. I have seen some posts over here on XDA saying that even if I restore back to stock completely using the the factory images, that message won't go away. I wonder what will happen when I sell it...
Rooting back in the day (CM6 era) provided usefulness in providing features that were not available from factory.
Nowadays, OEM software has implemented many of those features to their devices which eliminates the need to root for a lot of people. Now that updates are once a month, it makes it an inconvenience to having to update properly. Safetynet doesn't pass without configurations and may fail in the future when the new exploits are patched. You'll also have to factory reset during version updates which make it a hassle.
IMO, rooting nowadays causes more of an inconvenience than purpose. I prefer getting updates quickly and easily without having to fiddle around and everything works as it should.
The main question is, what is the REAL reason why you're wanting to root? If it's solely for the purpose of feeling like you modified something your phone, then I would say keep it unrooted unless your willing to lose all your data when a major version comes out.

Thank you for confirming. I really hope that it goes away after full restore to factory settings. Is there any zip file available, flashing which will make it go away while I am on custom ROM? Or does it always stay on all custom ROMs?

Don't worry about it. The nag warning is only present when your bootloader is unlocked, and you should leave your bootloader permanently unlocked. Eventually you won't even notice or care. If/when you return to stock, re-lock the bootloader and it will be gone.

The main question is, what is the REAL reason why you're wanting to root? If it's solely for the purpose of feeling like you modified something your phone, then I would say keep it unrooted unless your willing to lose all your data when a major version comes out.

Some people prefer custom ROMs that give you features not included in stock Android. ROMs with Pixel features for instance are popular on the 6P and its unlikely most of those features will come to stock.
Can someone port LINEAGE to this device? I have this phone and it is the slowest kitKat device ever.. my Moto E which for all intents and purposes is the same phone is super speedy compared to this phone. I have tried rooting it and removing all the nonsense system apps and it is still slower than molasses

Just so you know, it's an unspoken rule on XDA that no one is supposed to request custom ROMs for their device. Being a dev is no easy job, and requires devotion and hard work. If you want to have a ROM for your phone, either compile it by yourself or at least ask nicely. Thanks :good:

well you wouldn't think it'd be too difficult since literally every other version of this device has lolipop

not a coder just annoyed that every other version of this phone has some kind of custom rom except this one.. is there any way to strip out all the samsung nonsense and bring the stock rom to a more plain android appearance?

Best you can do is freeze/disable them. They won't run in the background anymore, and take up less storage :good:
And if I were you, I'd use that Moto E more...
Edit: No way to bring to a stock experience. Xposed works best with this, but even then the most you can do is get a material status bar and Nova Launcher...
You're best bet is to hope some Dev has the same device and time to compile. I know this sucks. I was stuck on KK for long time and suddenly a couple of devs made CM and various ROMs for the device I currently own (g360h).
However IMHO, stock is the best if you can embrace the ugly touchwiz. Custom ROMs always have these small bugs which get annoying as hell like battery drain, lag, random reboots.. SIM network problems... They don't seem much but a week of using custom ROM makes you wanna go back to stock.
Hey guys, long story short I've appropriated Axon 7 I originally got for my girl to use since she didn't quite like it, and honestly right now I need to upgrade from my unrootable slug of BB Priv.
As usual, way too many choices when it comes to roms, and the whole Oreo overhang is making it hard to try and narrow it down to just one. I haven't done anything custom for years, so is there a way to back up and restore all the apps and settings to save doing all of that between each new FW flash? That would save a ton of time and help me decide on a rom to start using daily.
That aside, should I pick from the already and well established 7.1.1 roms or try/wait for the 8's? On that note, what's with MiFavor 4.2 vs 5?

Just unlock and root, all following the guides. Use TWRP 3.2.1-0.
You can dualboot ROMs as long as the primary ROM is stock MiFavor. It's a little bit more complicated with Oreo ROMs but it's doable. Otherwise just try with titanium backup maybe, people still use that thing

Why not get it up to date as possible and leave it stock?
I decided to keep mine stock, still has a locked bootloader. Today I did an ADB de-bloat. Relented on my "not touching it" stance a tiny bit, lol. It is nice to have excess apps removed though. A factory reset would probably bring it all back anyway.
I started on this because I could tether data from my personal SIM but not my work SIM. ADB allowed me to fix that and then I got carried away
Will still be able to do an official Oreo update this way, if it comes.

Seeing how ZTE is basically screwed outta US market for/now, I think betas + our devs will be the only way. I wouldn't mind 7.1.1 had it option for camera to be on lock button double-click, but alas. And de-bloat IMO is an absolute must.

On MiFavor there's a much better thing imo: assign a fingerprint to the camera. Just use a finger that you won't ever confuse while unlocking it normally and you're done

So print can open camera + unlock the locker or?
In fingerprint settings you can assign different functions per print.
In fingerprint settings you can assign different functions per print and also set it to take picture. I have a finger set to turn on the torch when it's locked.

Yes ofc

Everyone always instantly wants a custom ROM but there's nothing wrong with stock. People just don't give it a go. It is a very well equipped phone once on Nougat. Even if we don't get Oreo I will leave mine on stock ROM unless it lasts well and need to go custom to get security updates etc.

I generally agree, but, there's no camera2, no double click for camera, and even these 2 misc features actually make or break a phone for me. If even Blackberry had the camera shortcut, with its potato of a camera otherwise, I don't see why ZTE decided to take it out entirely. Add a disclaimer and made it a toggleable option, not remove it entirely because of stupid people who put their phones into pockets with screen facing inwards.

Well, I personally never lock my phone because it annoys the hell out of me and my phone doesn't leave my side, ever, and on top of that A7 seems to hate my prints, so this is hardly a viable option for me. And, using the print sensor as a shutter, once and only once you're in the camera is pointless for me. double power button brings up the camera on top of whatever else you have going on, lock/screen off or not, to let you take that quick snap and that's exactly what I loved in 6.0.1 and onwards.
Sorry if this has been asked before.
My phone was recently stolen so I have been using my S4 for over a month now however Samsung's OVER bloated 5.0.1 junk battery munching ROM is horrid and unbearable, its like trying to run Windows Vista!
I do not know anything about customs ROMs, and this will be my first attempt and I'm just looking for a ROM that WORKS without any drama. As Vanilla as humanly possible. Not interested in customizing anything, what ever Google offered stock I will be more then happy.
However I am LOST with all the ROMs listed. Some mention Xposed others mention kernals and its all very confusing and to be honest I just don't care. Can anyone who has tried these just tell me which to go for? I would really appreciate this.
Thanks!

Honestly, since you know nothing about custom ROMs, I'm going to advise you to read. And what I mean by that is do research on what it takes to install a custom ROM properly and how to set it up so it can benefit you. Decide which ROM looks good to you, determine if you can install it on your model then take the necessary steps to do so. Otherwise, if you're not up for that then stay where you are or you will absolutely earn a new paperweight.

Well I've seen enough YT videos to understand the concept/principle, but I'm just trying to find the most simplest ROM there is. As I use my phone for work also so I can't have it stop working every 2 seconds.
I've used a friends Pixel phone which runs base android essentially. Which ROM here is the equivalent of that?
Thanks!

YouTube videos for custom ROMs is beyond moronic. It's not about how it looks, it's about what must go on your phone in order to get to that point of installation. You're looking for a ROM that is pure aosp. I have no idea what version of the s4 you're on but this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...dcteam-android-source-project-nrd90m-t3453084 is pure aosp, based on Android 7.1.2. It worked flawless when I ran it.
Thanks, found this one on YT and it seems fairly straight forward to install, starts from 5:30

Unless I'm missing something here?
Thanks again
