Is it crazy to buy and use this phone rooted and running AOSP only. I am on Verizon with a Galaxy Nexus and unlimited data. The phone now sells for $450. I love AOSP, but being on Verizon the closet that I can get is continuing with my rooted Galaxy Nexus or buying a Moto X or Razr to get as close to stock as possible. The hardware of the G2 is better than both, yet I do not like LG's version of Android. My thought is buy this phone root and install AOSP immediately. Is that crazy or am I talking to just talking to the other inmates in the asylum?

Ahh, I fellow inmate. So your plan is to use it rooted only as well? How soon after you receive the device before you root and which rom are you looking to install?

Im gonna root it day one and run CM11. Im on sprint so i could have took the easy route with a n5 but I like to do some tinkering so here i go.
Stock didn't last a single day on mine. I bought with the intention of flashing custom ROMs.

It looks like I came to the right place. Any big issues rooting and running roms? I have rooted every Android I have owned so I am accustomed to the quirks that it may bring. Just wanted to know if there are any big things to aware of.

Some have issues getting ROMs to flash on the 12B for VZW update. But over time all the ROMs will have that fixed. The ROM community seem to have most of the bugs fixed or they're working on fixing them. I'd say give some a try.

I have a Verizon G2 as well, lasted maybe an hour before I rooted and installed a ROM. Most of the big issues with 4.4.2 ROMs have been fixed (or are very close to being fixed). Favorite 4.4.2 ROMs so far are OSE, Beanstock and Mahdi. They all run smooth and have lots of customization options! Ayysir's PAEK Kernel runs great on these ROMs too! Will allow you to overclock/underclock the processor.

This is good to hear. It sounds like G2 is the next best thing to having a Nexus on Verizon. At least I know I am not crazy or at least no alone in wanted to root and rom immediately.
I'm an AOSP guy as well, also on Verizon. I mostly prefer AOSP because I like to customize myself and it's a lot easier to do with AOSP ROMs. They're also fast and light. So I was surprised when I really liked the stock LG ROM a lot. Ran Malladus, modified stock, for a while. So maybe give it a couple days, can't hurt. But now I'm on 4.4.2, I eventually wanted my AOSP. I'd say go for it. If you just want stable AOSP, Paranoid Android is a solid bet. It's not full of all the PA features yet. It ran rock solid for me. But even the feature/customization packed Beanstalk ROM I'm running now has been solid. And I'm sure it'll get even better once official 4.4 comes out and brings along updated proprietary stuff. I agree with you, it's the best bet on Verizon right now. I like the Moto X but the G2's camera, screen and battery life blow it out of the water. And I feel like it's a lot more future proof. As others have said 12B can be quirky, there are some modified recovery builds in the Verizon board that may help, I haven't looked at them recently as I rooted from 12A. If you get it and it's on 12A, it may be worth not taking the update just to avoid any issues, although I'm sure they'll be ironed out soon. You can always flash the 12B radio on your own if you want it.

Thank you. This is exactly what I was hoping to hear. The battery and camera are hard to ignore especially when they are two of my biggest issues with my Galaxy Nexus. Hardware you cannot change, but software.... I will check out PA, CM and the other AOSP options available. I guess I better research and prepare for 12B just in case it is already updated.
I'm a huge AOSP fanboy. The reason I bought the G2 (Verizon) was because of the availability of ASOP ROMs. With that said, I've fallen in love with the stock LG ROM. Once you debloat and add some modifications (I suggest G2 Xposed) you have a stock looking ROM that runs fast and bug free. Despite fantastic efforts from our talented developers, you're going to run into bugs and other quirks with custom ROMs. With the stock ROM things just work.
Regardless of what you do, you'll really enjoy this phone. Welcome to the club.
When I bought mine it was already rooted and flashed with CM11. I purchased it from swappa that way. I actually recently loaded up stock just to test it and stock is so feature packed. I threw on nova launcher and an icon pack wow. Phone is such a beast on stock.
I told the guy to ship it with cm11 I'm a huge aosp fanboy but stock is good.

What bothers me the about stock is the notification shade and how cluttered it appears and no multitasking soft key. I would try stock with minor tweaks if I could fix those issues.

I hear what you're saying. Which is why G2 Xposed is so fantastic. Check out my screenshots. First is with one finger swipe down. Second is with two fingers. Also note the inclusion of a multitasking button in place of the menu button LG included in stock. Not trying to change your mind. To each his own. Just trying to convey the message, from one AOSP cult follower to another, that the LG stock ROM is actually pretty useful.

Interesting....It appears as if I may have more options than I thought. I am a sucker for AOSP, but I may try stock. Thanks for the info. It almost appears like it gives G2 owners the best of both worlds. Stock, modified stock and AOSP.
Now how are those rear keys?

Rear buttons are fine. I actually prefer the layout now. They're weird at first, but in less than a day you'll be used to them. Plus the knock on/off feature means you won't use them much anyway.

Rear keys are still borked, but Knock-On I never use the power button and I've always let Tasker manage my volume levels.
I used stock for one day just to check the phone out, used AOKP 4.3 since. Works great.

Sounds like 'to each their own...' regarding the rear keys, yet they do not appear to be a deal breaker or keeping you from enjoying the phone.
I recently read a review that praised the hardware, yet cursed the software. They even commented that this phone is probably better for people who root phones. I am looking forward to doing so.

That last OTA was so great, that I have backed off of all the custom ROMs that were built since. None of them offer much benefit over the stock OTA and actually sacrificed stability. After figuring this out, I rolled back to the latest OTA and stopped flashing. This is the first time I have been here in like 3 weeks. And all it has done is re-affirmed my suspicion that really, the OTA will suit just fine for quite some time to come... maybe even until gingerbread.

+1. Though I enjoy 'modding my phone' I don't need to sacrifice stability for it. I think the only reason I would root again is for SetCPU to underclock and save battery or if some crazy app came out that Google does not plan on releasing.
htc's version of android has been reworked quite heavily to use sense, for those who dont like sense, it cant simply be stripped out and reinstalling the stock launcher leaves more problems then it solves, anyone looking for a pure android experience will jump to an asop rom as fast as possible, htc has done a great job staying on top of their phones for once but are still lagging behind xda, its the whole inch and a mile thing

+1 I never even bothered rooting after upgrading from the Hero to the Evo on Oct. 1st. My Hero was rooted and saw its share of custom roms but I'm quite happy with stock Froyo and the newest update.
I thought I would never go back to Sense after running CM6 on my Hero and some other aosp roms but I'm back to stock with the Evo and love it. Plus my wimax works which I do use.

That said, my wife was not rooted and started complaining because my rooted phone operated much smoother/faster than hers. BTW, even rooted, she uses ADW and no Sense.
So I ended up rooting my wife and oh boy is she happy now.
I still like playing around with roms but I've limited myself to two: MIUI (still not quite there for me but it's a beautiful rom) and Vaelpak.

OK. First let me say I am not a total noob. I go back to the original droid and up to the LGG2 in rooted every device. It was, in part, due to Verizon being so dang slow to update their devices. Now, though, I am finding no real reason to root. Transparent bars are not enough for me to do it Every person I find who roots the G2 has some issue. ART crashes some phones. Others have call issues. This or that will not function. Yes it fun to play with new things, but is it worth it? I am sure there will be people that will say they have zero issues but from what I am reading, I find it hard to believe they have zero.

I have no issues related to being rooted. Now most ROMs I've tried have their fair share of bugs, but that's part of the gamble you take a with a phone as new as this. Give it half a year and most of the things developed for the G2 will be ironed out.

I agree in part, but even after they are worked out you will normally find issues, even if minor, in the best of Roms. I point to Cyanogen just as an example. They are a great group with a quality ROM. Release candidates are super stable, but will have an issue or two. They also solo not have all the new stuff people crave like a nightly will have. But with nightlies you get instability. Please guys, I know everyone is going to jump in and say how great their favorite ROM is. That is not the point of my comments. I do not care what ROM you have. There is going to be a bug. I guess stock can be the same, but in general I am now leaning towards stock uprooted. With the LG g2 I have yet to see a feature stable enough to void warranty for. In a year from now that may change. At one time or was just a hobby. Flash and try everything. Add this, remove that. But this phone has so much stock I can no longer recommend rooting to any one. Obviously I have no issue if you do. I am just wondering what is driving people to root the G2?

Titanium Backup, AdAway, Xposed
What does ART have to do with root?
edit: you should change from why root to why custom rom...and at that why AOSP based rom
It's not so much the reasons listed above though they are all good. The main reason for me to Root is to remove all the Bloatware I can off my phone. This includes apps and options. I like to get my unit down to as bare as I can and build it back up the way I want a phone to be. I got the G2 for the hardware specs and not for anything else LG or Verizon was offering me.
Plus it is fun to deal with new Roms as they are being created.
And there will never be ZERO issues with any Rom and that includes the manufacturers release. If that is so good at the time of release why would there be Updates.

I suppose you are right on the why custom room. I am stock rooted on my Nexus 10 unrooted on this. With ART, it seems to be a reason people for since that is the only way to get it on most devices. That was all I was implying there. Perhaps when we finally get 4.4 ART will be available sans root

Sorry if this has been covered, I didn't really see much on this. Per my request, my work just ordered me a Note 3 and of course I don't have the ability to leave it alone. I won't have it until next week but I assume it will have Jellybean on it still? Are there any stable roms that are based on KitKat for this phone? Any word on a formal release of KitKat? With the help of a better launcher, I might try and keep this one stock for now, but who knows.
Right now I have an S3 running the Beanstalk 4.4 rom based on 4.4.2 which I absolutely love. The phone is very fast and stable. As I mentioned, this is a work phone (which doubles as a personal phone) so I can't sacrifice stability since I rely on the phone every day. Another reason why the phone might stay stock if I can get the formal KitKat release on it...
Looking at case options as well. Anyone running this case?

I'm glad the case is good. I'll have it tomorrow. I really hope they release KitKat soon, I hate taking a step backwards.
On another subject, I just pre-ordered my wife an AT&T GS5 today!
I am currently running M.O.A.R. rom on my Verizon S5. It has been okay, but it has it's downfalls. I am asking the community, what is the most up to date and reliable rom out there for the S5? Should I just go back to a stock rom? Looking for any and all advice.
none of them are perfect. Thats the difference between this phone and the last couple android phones ive had. With my s3 and my epic4g there was always one or two roms that were rock solid perfect even if not very exciting. Here its just what you can live with not working vs another
EDIT: I take that back, there were a couple rock solid roms, before everyone started switching to lollipop. Mrxtc's RICKSROM on Kitkat was rock effing solid. But he took it down. Kitkat in general was wholly more reliable and way better battery life and just everything. I wish someone still had a nice Kitkat rom.

Just so you know, it's an unspoken rule on XDA that no one is supposed to request custom ROMs for their device. Being a dev is no easy job, and requires devotion and hard work. If you want to have a ROM for your phone, either compile it by yourself or at least ask nicely. Thanks :good:

Best you can do is freeze/disable them. They won't run in the background anymore, and take up less storage :good:
And if I were you, I'd use that Moto E more...
Edit: No way to bring to a stock experience. Xposed works best with this, but even then the most you can do is get a material status bar and Nova Launcher...
You're best bet is to hope some Dev has the same device and time to compile. I know this sucks. I was stuck on KK for long time and suddenly a couple of devs made CM and various ROMs for the device I currently own (g360h).
However IMHO, stock is the best if you can embrace the ugly touchwiz. Custom ROMs always have these small bugs which get annoying as hell like battery drain, lag, random reboots.. SIM network problems... They don't seem much but a week of using custom ROM makes you wanna go back to stock.
