I don't know if it's well known, but I found the overall speed/performance to be a little slow. I'm talking about opening apps, and loading them, before they can be used. A simple thing I did was turn off all Moto stuff (Assist, Actions, Display). Not that the phone was bad as it's a very smooth overall device, but after turning off Moto, it really made a difference. All apps open and load much faster, and the UI seems snappier too. I know this may not be good for those who use Moto, but for me the trade off of turning it off is better than the little times I used it. Just thought I'd share in case there are people who are looking to gain a bit of speed.
Another tip is to enable developer options, and change the animations from 1x to .5x. Huge difference in opening apps, and general overall use.

On the topic of improving performance, is there a list of bloatware/apps that are safe to freeze/remove?

There's not really any bloat. Since the phone is not carrier locked you only get three apps not from Google. Alert, Migrate, and Moto. I guess if you really wanted you can disable the Google apps you don't use, but they are just the standard apps you would use anyway (at least I do) like Maps, Gmail, Hangouts, etc.

Verizon carries this phone. I just disabled whatever I don't use and my phone is fine.

Ah sorry, I meant more than just preinstalled apps. I meant background apps and services as well.
I use DroidWall to deny network access to everything except the stuff I need (gmail/web browser/weather widget), and looking at firewall logs I see a ton of moto and google-related services trying to connect to the network even if I don't use them. (DW groups them all into a few "app" entries, so I haven't had time to go through and find the exact culprits). Some of the google ones can be easily disabled (hangouts, drive, etc), but there's more than just those three moto apps that are trying to get network access.
For example, there seems to be some sort of service (Moto Checkin maybe?) that displays a ! warning symbol in the wifi signal meter if that service is not able to connect to some server, even if network access is working in other applications. Disabling that service would help cut down on RAM/CPU usage (even if it's only minute) and network usage (it seems to do this check every 15min or so).
EDIT:
Found what is causing the exclamation mark. It's an android system process that pings google servers to determine if the phone has a connection to the internet and not just the router. I was thinking it had to do with some Moto service because Droidwall grouped "Android System" in the same app category as a bunch of useless Moto services.
This thread details a bit more about it and how to disable it (I went with method 2A): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58252752&postcount=38
Not having a service trying to ping google every few minutes should help improve battery life and a minute amount of RAM/CPU usage.

/ according to me all the motorola phones come without bloatware and by removing mentioned apps i dont think there must be significant improvements. But definitely changing animations will definitely improve your performance but not the moto apps
Is the device still have memory leak bug. My device is lagging like hell after half an hour use.
The antutu benchmark is also 16163 which is very less i think. My Android One topped upto 22000.
I wrote a post similar to this as well, is there a way we can consolidate it to just this one?

What's the best way to do this? Go into Apps and disable, or is there a better way to "turn it off"?
Disabling apps basically stops them from ever being active, period: once disabled they don't run anymore, don't have any services run anymore, and they disappear aka become invisible in the apps tray. The only thing they still do is "hang around" meaning they take up space on the device but that's a given. With a proper root and Titanium Backup (the full purchased version) you can completely uninstall said apps but there's always a chance you'll remove something that's integral to something else, especially when you're dealing with either the Google framework stuff or on Motorola devices the Moto system underpinnings.
Best course of action: go into Settings - Apps - and Force close the app, delete all the cached data if there is any and then disable the app(s) as required on the device itself and then go from there. If there's absolutely no issues ever with the functionality of the device then sure, you can do the root/Titanium Backup/uninstall route if necessary but you're not really going to save a ton of space overall.
Most times, disabling an app is more than enough to get it out of the way and stop bothering you for whatever reason(s).

I regret buying this, it lags like hell no matter what you do. I feel the moto g 2nd gen runs smoother. It could be the memory leak bug on 5.0.2.

Well you have tweaked stuff since day one. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. I'm running stock, and the only change system wise I did was change Dev options for animations. I have no complaints as I switch back and forth from this, and my Note 3, and I only notice some slowness opening apps, but no lag, stutter, or anything I would consider bad performance. Maybe try flashing stock image, factory reset, and see how it is then.

I have to say I agree here, I am also running Stock. I have not seen any serious lag on ths phone except slightly slower loading. And I know what lag feels like as I am the not so proud owner of a TF700 tablet....
All I have done is mod the animations likewise and disabled as much as I can that I don't use.
I run stock and only modified the animation speed and must say the phone lags much more than I anticipated.
Must be Lollipop because my parents both have the Moto G 4g (kitkat) and everytime I need to help them it feels much more fluid than my Moto e.
From loading apps and the play store to even swiftkey that seems to load so much quicker, very weird.
Just tested it yesterday because I thought I was making things up and put my dads phone and mine next to each other and the speed difference when loading apps was making me sad.
I just picked this phone up yesterday to hold me over until the next moto X, or maybe the next nexus.
came from a nexus 5 (only had it a month and well i couldn't live with its awful battery life, it was so bad maybe only 6 hours per charge and the battery was fairly new). now this phone is noticeably slower, but its really not so bad. I do think though that something in this software build for 5.0.2 is slowing it down. when i am using the phone it seems like theres plenty of free ram, but it just feels a little stuttery scrolling through things like a facebook feed. I had a moto x 2013, and a razr M before that, and am a big motorola fan, but I just cant see how this is so slow. it seems like it'd have to be faster than a razr M (which is same resolution, and 1GB ram) but it seems to me that something is really wrong here.
hopefully 5.1 comes out soon.

Hi!
So I have not used samsung in a while...and I got the edge plus recently
Very good phone, but it feels so damn slow and laggy... nothing on it pretty much ut it was the reason I left samsung and touchwiz
So what can I do?
I know my htc one had fast roms for it
Anything good for this phone? Lile vanilla or debloated or less ram demanding rom?
Also at times the touch screen doesnt behave...especially when FB messenger is open
Anyhows, I do appreciate all kinds of tips and help
Thanks!
The only thing I have done myself is to not use a theme (I noticed it reduced the amounts of cases when the phone did not respond dramatically) and reduce animation time. Overall I have a snappy experience.
With this phone I (at least at this point) do not want to do anything that could screw with warranty and/or OTA compatibility and as such I have not rooted or flashed anything (like I have with all my other android phones) but if anyone have any tips on how to increase battery performance or speed on the phone without messing what I just stated I would just like the OP like some tips
EDIT:
Also disabled the following apps (using the phones own means):
G movies
G play
Instagram
Memo
Onenote
Powerpoint
S Health
Samsung Gear
Sidesync
EDIT2:
you can (It might cause issues as well as issues with OTAs) check the following thread for debloating the phone and as such perhaps get some more speed and/or battery life
http://forum.xda-developers.com/s6-edge-plus/general/debloating-t3216103
A week ago I got myself a s8 ,I have an iPhone 7 Plus and I’m so sick of having to deal with this size , it feels like a brick, plus I don’t like the “psysical button “ , I wanted to get rid of it so I gave the s8 a try , and so I did and I loved the design , the screen , the camera ( night shots are better than the iPhone 7 in my opinion ) but the performance is just awful , innaceptable for a flagship , choppy scrolling , the framerate skips like crazy sometimes , it just ... lags :/
I couldn’t believe it after reading the rave reviews , so it turns out that the European version has the Exynos cpu instead of the snapdragon 835 and the benchmarks don’t tell the whole story , I tried uninstalling unnecessary apps , deactivating bloat apps , deactivating the side panel , using nova launcher ( without using root or freezing apps or something like that , but it didn’t help , did you guys just get used to the lag ? :/ have you read that the performance on the note 8 is better (the example version of course ) and if it is , so you think it’s because of the extra ram ?
I’m hopeful that Samsung will make the performance better with the Oreo update but that update will probably come in December / January , what are we supposed to do until then ?
Coming from a Huawei Mate 9 and resently activating my note 8(snapdragon) it ain't much better. Nothing about this phone is butter smooth.
Will be getting mate 10 next month. First Samsung since note 3/4.
Not horrible but expected more with specs/company
I honestly don´t know what you are talking about. Maybe I just don´t notice it.
I know up to the Galaxy S6 the Samsung Flagships were always lagging like crazy with StockROMs, but at least since the S7 it´s smooth like other Flagships. (Always talking about Exynos)
Where do you experience the lag? I just checked Twitter, Menus and browser an couldn´t notice any
I use Nova Launcher, which definitely improves the experience a lot. Combined with changing animations to 0.5x it almost never feels laggy. I rarely switch back to TouchWiz to see if it has improved, but always end up going back to Nova. I also use Gboard instead of Samsung keyboard, which also feels snappier and has better prediction.

Same here ! No more lag with this setup
I have the dual SIM international version (Exynos) since around launch date. I don't recall any instances of lag. On rare occasions there is the odd app crash.
I have not used an iPhone for any length of time to be able to compare, but we have a couple of iPads, one of them is relatively new and when using it for general browsing, reading, etc, I don't feel that I get a markedly better or smoother experience. Both S8 and iPad just work very well.

I have an iphone 7 256gb Red Edition and my S8 is no more laggy than my iphone, yes iphone can lag too. BTW, iphone is for sale. You need to be more specific where you see lags if you want people to help. I get lag when scrolling on Piano Tiles 2 but that's because he's a ****ty developer but the game is awesome. Need way more details.
I have exynos version with custom rom and i have no lags. If you what have fone with no lags at all buy iPhone. Every android have Little lags and glitches.
DEVELOPER OPTIONS (see screenshot) transition animation speed 0.5x
I read a post in the Essential Phone forum:

To make it more snappy, go into developer options and set the transition speed to .5 instead of 1. That should make things seem to zip."
I've attached a screenshot, but my transition animation speed is still at default 1x (i.e., not the 0.5x recommendation).

Facebook is a horrible app regarding optimization. I also noticed horrible lags there. Ended up uninstalling and i am now using it via chrome and its great. No lags, bettet battery etc.
I dont use twitter but instagram is fine on me no lags at all. As for playstore nothing can be done about it. It was always that way.

All of this + youtube hdr playback above 720p. Seriously it should be fixed or bye bye samsung this time.
P.S The ``tremble`` is called stuttering and if you search from google you will found tons of users having exactly the same issue. In my oppinion the exynos processor throttles a lot due to overheating. Cant proove it though cause am no specialist on this matter

No lag for me, if there was then I wouldn't have the phone, I am EXTREMELY demanding. But then I dont have **** apps like twitter and facebook that are VERY badly written and drain the battery like theres no tomorrow. I also use nova so cant comment on whether any lag might be touchwiz related, not used touchwiz since my S3.

Weird thing-- I'm using one of the YouTube background play-enabled apps.. God I wish I could remember which one, but I got it here. Has some theme options, using one with a back background. I experience absolutely no lag with 1440phdr with this app.. No such luck with the base Youtube app
After cleaning up as many services as possible with Package Disabler, the rest of my interface lag has vanished (even in TouchWiz)
Last couple days have seemed like I have finally found the device the S8 is supposed to be, buried under the inefficient bloat and bogus it ships with.. Of course, I'm on the 835, so this may not have meant anything to begin with haha

Snapdragon isint much better either. My roommate got a pixel 2 XL and his phone is smoother (with all apps running) than my freshly factory reseted S8.
i just changed my iphone 7 with s8 exynos , i see no different in performance , in fact i loved s8 more , i can't deny that s8 have a little of lags but from my experience ios has lags too , i have 6:30H screen on time in my s8 , i never dreamed about that in my iphone 7 , in iphone I only got 5H screen on time
This is assuming the iPhone 7 suffered no lag or stutters under iOS 11. I came from the iPhone 7 and use to notice stutters while scrolling through contact lists and even the home button had delays. I've got Nova Launcher set up on my current S8 and stock rom with tons of apps and never formatted since I've been using it for the past 3months. I won't lie I did come across occasional stutters but I find it way more fluid than the experience I had on iOS. The list scrolling, app animations, etc is really smooth.

I agree to a certain extent. I used the Xperia XZ1 Compact for a month on Android 8.0. The interface felt faster than the S8 given the same developer options. You can speed up the S8 if you want by lowering the screen resolution (settings>display). But then you wouldn't have the higest (other than S7) screen DPI ever seen on a phone.
Hi all,
I'm a proud owner of PH-1 since yesterday. The device is beautiful, feels so good in my hands, premium looking.
But, after checking everything was working fine and applying all the OTAs, I felt the performance was not good enough. You know, the unwanted jank.
I'm sure that Snapdragon 835 + screen resolution combination must fly, without jank at all; the best proof is that it's something you experiment with the current Lineageos ROM, although I haven't tested it by myself yet.
Therefore, after reading some comments which pointed that OREO beta performed better, I upgraded to it and made a FR to start with a clean upgrade. But I still have that unpleasant feeling.
I've taken several systraces trying to find out something that could help, but the truth is that jank is everywhere. Two examples:
- Scrolling through Amazon app: check amazon.png attachment. Several frames lost at once, due to the orientation sensor + sporadic jank:
Title MessageLoop::RunTask
Category toplevel
User Friendly Category other
Start
1.619,131 ms
Wall Duration
138,135 ms
Self Time

Args
src_file
"../../mojo/public/cpp/system/simple_watcher.cc"
src_func
"ArmOrNotify"
- Scrolling through Settings. Jank again (specially when the end scrolling animation is shown).
This has been just a quick analysis. We can confirm that improvement is possible. It's not only a feeling now.
I don't know if Essential team reads this forum, but I'd love to see this improved. It's the only thing, IMHO, that needs to get fixed to own a perfect phone.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,

They are aware of it and they said this issue is top priority. Whether they can fix it that remains to be seen. My gut tells me they can improve the touch scrolling, but ultimately there's an issue with the LCD panel. I am hoping it's not a design flaw and that I'm proven wrong. This is my main issue with the device. I love everything else about it. In Lineage the touch scrolling and performance in general is much better compared to stock or Oreo beta, but the touch scrolling issue is still there.
The problem with the scrolling is waaaaay better than my LG G4 (which seems to have been programmed to go down after a year ).
The only issue I really had is with some news website opened through the Facebook app, where scrolling is just not working.
Thanks for your replies.
Just to summarize: I'm talking about performance problems, that's it, missed frames when scrolling or an animation is shown (ie: open an app). That's not acceptable on a device powered by a 835 processor.

Switch to Lineage if it really bothers you. I personally could not handle stock for the reasons you mentioned. Lineage is like using a completely different device. Night and day difference when it comes to UI smoothness and performance. Latest build has incredible battery life too.

Completely agree. I switched to LineageOs yesterday, and looks like a different phone. No jank and battery consumption is really good so far.
Thanks for the tip. I would really like to go back to stock, but once they have fixed both idle consumption and jank issues.
Br,
Anybody know of a fix for the ridiculous amount of lag on Pie? Between that and the sad excuse of video recording, I'm really debating on going back to my buttery smooth Z2force. The only problem is this phone is pure eye candy, comfortable to hold, and my hands have betrayed my eyes recognition of the lag and fell in love this phone. . The performance is more like snapdragon 620 than 835. Any help regarding this situation would be highly appreciated
I have no lag on Pie, beta 3 or official. Sounds like your due for a full wipe
Well now that sucks considering I just moved about 90gigs to the device and thought I did a full wipe but just notice Alexa still installed. The funny thing is I had very little late lag on Beta 3.

If I were you, I'd wipe everything, and then fastboot the full official pie update. Just to fully eliminate software.
Hi there I am the same boat like you . I got lag typing on keyboard scroll is not smooth at all .I tried reinstalling the latest build and factory full reset pus wipe all data .I can't resolve the lag I think they rush to get it in the same date like the pixel but is not optimised for this device for example get an icon and hold it and get it to place it in another location you will find out that the icon is behind when you move it
The only and I think temporary fix is by doing this
Go and click 5 times on build number and go in developer settings you will find there touch sensitivity set it to 10 let say default is 4 I think . You will improve touch latency a bit .
I just bought the device I don't know how it was on Oreo but I can say on this pie build official is not smooth
@mookiexl got to the Developer Options;
Windows animation scale - off
Transition animation scale - off or .5x
Animator duration scale - off or .5x
Also increasing the 'Touch Sensitivity' increases the scrolling speed.
Play with these and watch it fly! LOL
It would be great if someone can take a video so we can actually see this lag with our own eyes.
I just got my phone and it turned out bad, sending it back, new one on the way. It makes me wonder now if all the stories about bad hardware is true on these phones, since I've never had a bad phone ever in my life, then my first Essential turns out bad.
Wifi problems connecting
Statusbar icons appearing in white, turn all black
Phone speaker, bad quality, can't even turn it up, or it gets distorted
Head speaker, is low, volume isn't loud enough
Adaptive brightness doesn't work
Volume got stuck at one point when it was set as all the way down, no sound, then I wasn't able turn the sound back on, nothing would happen on either buttons...
So hopefully new phone arriving will be better, and from this experience, I think I'll keep it on Oreo for a long time, until people start raving over Pie.
And between a SD625 and this SD835, can't say I saw a big speed difference too... hmm
post error...

I hear ya brother. To be fair I haven't had any of those other problems I heard about before buying the phone besides what's mentioned in this thread. 3rd party camera apps with full manual control drastically improved camera quality for my device. If you want to see the lag I'm taking about just YouTube it.
As far as SD625 and Sd835, there's a huge difference for me being a power user. Lots of gaming, editing videos, download big files, or even just transferring data from internal to external sd you will definitely see a big difference in performance during any memory extensive task.
@mookiexl
Do you know any YouTube videos with the same issues you're having, you can show us?
I only found one for Camera Portrait Lag.
Fastboot install of 9.0 over the official July 8.1. Magisk root.
No device lag or issues with WiFi, volume or any of the things above. The only lag I see is my own getting to grips with the UI changes.
USOpen device used in the UK.
It sounds like you're both having some kind of install/integrity issue. Did you test the checksum?

All I've done since receiving the device is take all system updates and then unlocked bootloader which in turn wipe data. See the video I posted for details. If you have another SD835 device to compare it too try tha,t or better yet don't because it will make the lag very bothersome once you know its there.
That video is a year old. I have no discernible lag even with upward of 20 apps in the background, but I'm not saying that you don't.
Also, I had this and a Google PXL at the same time up until a few weeks ago. If anything, the PH1 was better, smoother and faster.
I've got serious lag... Keyoress lag, stuttering during scrolling. Could it be because of RAM usage? The stats in developer options say that I using 3.4 out of 3.9 gb on average....
