[A5 2017] Fingerprint sticker? - Galaxy A3, A5, A7, A8, A9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi, I've just bought my a5 2017 from Amazon, I came from loved redmi note 3 pro: I notice fingerprint is way way way worse! Recognition rate 20% since the first boot up, one finger better than the other at least. What's wrong? Looking the light reflection I may think there is a sticker on the home button so it takes all the "hand grease" but I didn't manage to remove it and stopped, fearing to damage it.
Any help is appreciated

Light reflexion is normal. Delete fingers saved and reconfigure. During fingers configuration, change your fingers positions until 100%. The multiple positions of your fingers are all saved. It's important for recognition rate

Thanks for your reply. Some days ago I tried instead to delete all the fingerprints and to try using the same "portion" of skin instead of saving all the possible angles like I did in the previous phone: things improved, 20% right finger and 40-45% left finger. At last I surrendered and changed the password to a simpler pin for the (fast) right hand and tried to configure three identical fingerprint for the left hand: 60-70% recognition rate if I "strike" the right portion and position. Almost acceptable. Should I send back to amazon for replacement? Are yours normal and working instead or is a model problem?

Proximity Sensor ADC Value - Please Weight In

My current Note has the proximity senor issue where it thinks my face is to the phone all the time and therefore gestures don't work and the screen goes black instantly when making a call. This has been outlined in a few threads. Here are two good ones:
This post has actual values for ADC:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-sensor-issue-during-calls-3.html#post3234634
Another with the same problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2520118
I looked at a new note today that Bell is going to let me exchange my current note for. Its value with nothing close to it is about 30.
I would like to know what other peoples ADC values are. Simply enter *#0*# into your dialer, then choose sensors and you will see the ADC value with the proximity sensor. Could you please report that value with nothing close to the screen.
I'm trying to determine what the normal ADC value should be on a new working phone so I can figure out if the new phone (that has an ADC value of 30) is ok or not.
Thanks and hopefully this will help out other people.
Mine seems to stay at 33-35 until about 20cm away from the screen then starts increasing.
I don't have any problem what so ever with the screen turning off/on when calling. Not even once failed.
My values for ADC are 0, constantly 0, if nothing in front of the device. If i approximate my hand it starts increasing, and then the screen turns green and the phone vibrates when the proximity sensor goes from 0 to 1. If i put my finger on top of the sensor it stays at ADC 1003.
Is this how it is supposed to work?
N9005 with MJ7 firmware.
Mine is always below 10 if nothing is in front. Fluctuate between 5 and 9.

My ADC values fluctuate between 30 - 34. @antt00, how come yours so low?
My first note idiled at around 29-30. My second replacement note idles between 0-1. I had proximity problems with my S4 so I check it religiously. While values around 30 would be okay for now, but you may run into problems later. The problems come when you have some dust that gets stuck inside on the sensor and causes a higher adc value. This is what causes the sensor to not work correctly. I have to take apart my S4 every 3 month or so just the clean it and then the number will drop back down to 6. Also keep in mind, the reading goes up a bit in direct sunlight. IMO I would get one that idles around 0, this will give you more headroom for dust.
Thanks for the feedback. I didn't get a chance to read all the posts before I went and got an exchange. For some reason their system let me exchange it even though I past 15 days so I kind of jumped on the chance. The new note at home reads around 20. Not as low as some but better then what I returned. I'll have to see how long it lasts and I'll keep and eye on it. It definitely sounds like its a combination of possibly bad/poor sensors. Dust build up inside which is a design flaw. And maybe poor calibration from samsung as it look like from a post I've see that you can re-calibrate the sensor, though I not sure if that may have some negative effects.
I didn't try and push them to let me cherry pick a phone, they were nice enough to let me check the ADC value and firmware version before the exchange. Hopefully this one works out or I'll have to try and get a better one. I'll see in time as my previous one definitely had the dust issue. It was pretty obvious because I could lower the ADC value if I blew compressed air in the ear piece.
i did notice the proximity sensor screwing around on phone calls, it would delay getting the screen back after distancing from it...
the procedure you gave me shows ADC values contentiously flipping from 9 to/through 13 (sometimes chronologically)
putting your hand over seems to green-out the window showing that proximity is working, nice, however, im having shadow greens, meaning, just leaving it on the table, once a minute it goes green, yet nothing moves over it...strange.
ps, no plastic cover used, dont see a reason to use protection with this quality

Yes but that does not obstruct the sensor. It only reaches below it.
Idling 0 with and without direct artificial light (no tested against sunlight). As my palm gets closer the number progressively increases. The screen turns green after reaching 120
I had no idea that a proper cleaning could fix the sensor. Thanks for the info
iiSo say we all!! From my Note 3 (N9005)
Well now I'm at about ADC 40. In two days the value has doubled. I can't win....
I have this problem with my AT&T N900A and the ADC value is between 82 and 85 at idle. If I wave my hand over the sensor it will go to 1000 but unfortunately its still not responding when I pull the phone from my face after a phone call.
I'm not rooted so I'm not going to manually adjust anything. Is the fix just to get another phone. This is sort of pissing me off. I've had 6 or so Samsung phones and never a problem so frustrating as this one.
And now I'm at ADC 90 and when I activate the sensor (screen goes green and vibrates) it won't stop when I move my hand away. There must be a serious design flaw that allows dust to get onto the sensor. Unfortunately I don't see any way to solve this....I don't know how many times I can return the phone and hope to get one that doesn't allow dust in. I guess the next step is to try and talk to Samsung.....
Has anyone gone as far as to replace the sensor? There is a part out there. Its listed as a 9000/9005 part, not sure if it works with US carrier models. I'm having a hard time finding it in stock anywhere though.

I have zero desire to send my device to a Samsung service center. I'd have to order a phone to use in the mean time until it came back. I'd rather just swap a new part in.

when i move one hand about 14-16cm above the device (and move it closer to it) the numbers start to increase

I have a strong feeling that its just dust getting in the way. I was at ADC 90, blew air at the ear piece and it dropped to ADC 60. Though I don't know how it looks like inside. I have a feeling some are sealing out the dust completely and some are not.
I do find it odd though that mine started out from factory at ADC 30

I'm not really satisfied with the idea of periodically blowing into the ear piece of the phone with a can of air I don't regularly have otherwise. They need to accommodate the issue with a software fix for the sensor sensitivity if they can't fix the manufacturing process.

Finger Print Reader Tip - It's All About Angles

Here's a great tip I found while browsing online. If you're having trouble with the reader, It is most likely because you swiped the same finger the same way all 10 times. Here's what I did.
1 - I only use my thumb print to unlock. Either thumb.
2 - For the first profile, I use my left thumb and swipe each time in slightly different directions as if I would normally unlock it. I even do one where I'd have to open it while someone else is holding the phone.
3 - I do the same for the right thumb with the second profile.
4 - I do another one just to make sure i have all the angles.
5 - Should work much better.
Remember get all the angles you think you're gonna use!
It's also good to re-capture your prints after a weeks use with the phone. Now you got that muscle memory
Found the link here. Although I don't think he's getting all the angles now that I'm watching it again lol. http://youtu.be/I0qMp0Smi58
.
Thanks we try and report back
Great advice. Work's allot better

Index finger works best for me...it's functions almost flawlessly.....I tried thumb but never worked out well
The index works for me. 9 out of 10.
Nice catch! I'm surprised this wasn't discovered or mentioned by anyone before!
I used my right thumb for Fingerprints 1, 2, and 3. I got every angle I could imagine, and rotated my thumb slightly a few times. One finger scanned 30 times works way better than three fingers scanned ten times each!

I think each fingerprint actually gives you ability to store 2 fingers. So I did thumbs and index fingers (index finger is much easier when it is laying flat on a table in front of you) and swiped at angles like you suggest. Seems pretty good and I think the update even improved it - no hard evidence, just seems improved.
One more suggestion - do one fingerprint swiping up. Works great and I find it a bit easier one handed.
i dont always leave comments on post i read, but when i do its because the OP was so amazing with their information that it helped me out alot...
thanks so darn much for this...

u can scan one finger 20 times in one imprint... when it gets done with the first 10 it ask if u want to scan the same finger again, that adds to the original scan...
I'll give it a try... I was so frustrated with the fingerprint scanner I even removed the option and started using the pattern lock.

I scan my left tbumb in every direction possible, and different angle, so now it works as good as iphone scanner
agree with tips
I completely agree with op and other posters. My fingerprint unlock is working flawlessly. I did 20 scans each on both thumbs and my right index and all 3 are working.
Make sure you scan each side, literally turn your hand like your giving someone a handshake and do a few scans on the sides. Same for the other side of each finger and the tips as well.
Most importantly if you're using your thumb is to scan the fingerprint sideways from different angles several times. Scan it straight up and down, then at a 90 degree angle 45 degree angle and any angles in between. Do each one a couple times, in particular make sure you're doing it the way that you'll actually be doing it when your unlocking the phone. Hold your phone like you would when you going to unlock it and scan it that way several times. Best of luck hopefully this works well for everyone wanting to use it without any headaches.
Useful!! Thanks a lot!
I followed the instructions and some of the feedback that some other folks left here and works like charm!!! Its kinda hard do it with one hand but its pretty accurate... now my gf cant unlock the phone
I registered 6 fingers and they all work fine.

I have no issues with my fingerprint scanner but I came from the s5, which I think was a bit more finicky. I had to swipe multiple times and use a glas.tr to keep the button flush. The note 4 reads my thumb every time and I'm very happy with it.
My "tip" for you guys would be to literally use the tip of your finger. If I place my thumb lower as to cover the whole button like it says, it never works. If I just use the very tip of my finger it works perfect every time.
This is awesome! Got mine set up last night and am enjoying this simple security very much! Wish it could be set up to be always on so you can open with the screen off just like the mic for Google Now!

fingerprint reader issue

Hi folks,
Anyone else experiencing issues with the fingerprint reader?
I've set up the maximum if 5 fp, but interestingly all the 5 are the same finger.... And the device won't recognise my finger ad soon as I lock the phone.
Tried with different fingers= same result.....
No matter what I'm doing, clean cache, re-set, etc....
I've already exchanged the phone but the new one is the same....
Any idea how to fix it?
Sounds like your fingers aren't compatible. Is it a common practice to have the same finger registered five times? Only have once perfinger myself and never have an issue unlocking.
My experience is it gets a lot better with time. I did make two entries for my left thumb which helped increase read rate from maybe 2/3 to >9/10. Other fingers read well and got better. In sunlight, in dark, no problem it just works. If your fingerprints are in some way unusual or hard to read it may "just be you.".
Do you have a friend whose finger you can borrow to test things out? Rule out the phone ?

Oh that's awful! I'm consistently >9/10 after a month and half of use. Even early on was probably75%. Only problem I have is right after a shower it doesn't like swollen skin fingers.
As a test I just did 20 unlocks using the various four fingers i defined. Only one fail, and that was left thumb at an angle.
Phone is definitely better than iPhone 6 I have for work (50% rate).

How does everyone register their same finger more than once? It tells me I've already registered that finger?
I noticed a dramatic improvement when I washed my hands really well, cleaned my screen, THEN registered my fingers.
Are you using a screen protector? If you are that is probably your problem.

LOUSY fingerprint sensor, contemplating return

Got my 6T 8 days ago, love everything about the phone but the fingerprint sensor. Words cannot describe how aggravating it is. On a good day it takes at least a full second to respond. It does not work if I recently took a shower, if my hands are cold, if there is a minor amount of debris on my fingerprint, after washing my hands. The sensor fails to recognize my left thumb 50% of the time no matter how many times I redefine the fingerprint. I have gone as far as having separate imprints taken in bright and dark conditions, to no effect. When the sensor does work on my left thumb it takes twondull seconds.
I am THIS close to returning the phone while I can still do so. Have there been any rumors whether the 7 will use an ultraonic sensor? I love OP phknes but they blew it with the 6T sensor big time.
I have had zero problems with mine, even after applying a tempered glass cover it works great. I thought that I would have to redo my prints after installing the glass cover, but it worked just as fast as it did with the original cover. Maybe the sensor on yours is faulty and an exchange will fix the problem?

Running the latest beta and my FP sencor unlocks instantly..
Also change the animation to McLaren
Been using the 6T since the release, at first the fp was kinda slow, few misreads, but now (since a month or two) it works great, it can even unlock with half of the finger on the sensor. It even works if there is a thin layer of some substance on the finger. It was never unreliable for me. Now it works perfectly.
I had issues initially and didn't really like it, finding a lot of rescans to get the phone to unlock. After a lot of trial and error, for me, I found the best technique is to lightly put your finger on the scanner. It seems to unlock fine, first time now for me. I think the McLaren animation is just a perception that the phone is unlocking quicker. I actually have the animation disabled and don't notice any difference in speed compared to with it on.
It seems that the efficiency of the fingerprint sensor is highly dependent on ambient lighting. Things work somewhat well at night and indoor. Outside in bright daylight they generally suck. This kind of makes sense, one way to reduce this is to make sure that your finger fully covers the sensor area, with as much overlap as you can get away with.
FP sensor doing my head in on my McLaren 6T. Lately I have seen it becoming less and less accurate. It takes a few tries to unlock and sometimes I have to enter the pin since it will not allow any more tries. Tried deleting and adding the FP's but to no avail. Disabled the option for the time being. Probably the worst aspect of this phone if you ask me. Have the original glass screen protector on.
Mine wasn't great on the original T-Mobile firmware, but since I've converted to international 9.0.12 it's been flawless. Sounds like you may have a faulty device, unless you haven't updated?
I registered my dominant finger twice. It did the trick for me.
Bright lockscreen background and register finger twice has improved it a lot,bit it will never be as good as the standard Scanners
Mine seems to not work as well with my left thumb compared to my right. It isn't as good as my old pixel 2 xl fp sensor, but not horrible either. Just the left is wonky no matter how many times I re-register. Maybe light or my fingerprint.
This is def cutting edge technology through the screen for a fingerprint compared to others. But it ultimately works real reliably with my right thumb.

Try and redo all your prints in a dark room. Helped me out tremendously
My 6T fingerprint detection is as good as on my 3T, and far better than on my iPhone 6. I did have to register my left thumb twice to get good detection. I have no problem in the dark, interior light, or bright sunlight. In all cases with any of my four registered fingers I get 9 or 10 good scans out of 10.
The only circumstance where it routinely had trouble is "fresh out of the shower" fingers. The slight swelling or whatever due to warm water throws it off for sure. After 5-10 minutes it is back to working reliably though.
I have had mine about a month now and struggled with the fp sensor as well. I've changed the animation, re-registered the same finger/thumb twice, nothing seemed to work very well.
Here is what worked for me, when registering the fp, press very lightly. I'm used to using a standard sensor and always press very firmly.
My thought is that since it's through the glass, pressing too hard distorts the fp and results in problems.
My recommendation is to stop retraining it. It learns the more you use it (Oneplus confimed). Stick with it for a week and you'll see a massive difference. Mine is just as flawless as my OP3 now, No issues at all.

How did you do his? Every time I try it I am told that the finger is already registered.
On a more positive note after following some of the suggestions here things are definitely looking up. The stuff that made the biggest difference
1. Press lightly when defining FP
2. Register FP is a somewhat dim environment
3. Make sure they center point of fingerprint is scanned during the fist phase, so that the finger covers the green spot solidly.
4. Get a good sampling of the center and edge during the two stages
5. The McLaren animation makes a notable difference

I kept changing my finger position little by little when it showed already registered, to give the phone maximum coverage of the finger. Changing the pressure also makes difference.
Also the McLaren effect helps a lot in this case, I believe.

Very slow Fingerprint sensor out of the box faulty

To say up front I have had 4 previous S10s (3 S10s and 1 S10+) so have some comparison and today picked up the ceramic white S10+ .
Immediately out of the box the FPS feels really really slow, it was never quick on the other devices but this feels like it is in slow motion. Setting up in the first instance was painful with lots of prompts to 'press harder' I have not removed the screen protector yet but I did not on the other eithers and it is noticeable slower than they were. It may be my imagination but the screen protector looks thicker than the others did but that could be my imagination or memory deceiving me, I may try removing it in a bit.
Just wondering if anybody else has experienced this on an S10 or S10+?

There was an update that came out that helped with this, is your phone up-to-date with the OTA's?
Just update your device to the latest version and it's very very fast ?
Removing the protector made all the difference. Must have been a dodgy one or as suspected just thicker.

I had a Whitestone Dome glass on mine for the past few months and it was so hit or miss I pretty much completely switched over to face unlock, I think this was mainly due to my dry skin. Yesterday I decided to rip the Dome glass off because I got tired of the fingerprint never working properly and boy is it night and day without it even with dry skin. Without the Dome glass it is super quick and I haven't had any issues or hiccups in the last 24 hours and I've deactivated face unlock.
My FPS works fine but my problem is that when I first turn on my phone it always forces me to use the pattern unlock method to unlock my phone without any option to use the fingerprints scanner. I do have the FPS set as my preferred security method and it works for apps and when the screen turns off but when I power down and turn back on I always have to use the pattern. Is there any way to fix this?

That's normal.

Yeh and also if you've not used the phone for a while itll ask for pin/password etc for security reasons.

Yeah and also, I find deleting and re registering fingerprints after 2 months good. Seems like my fingerprints on my skin shift slightly.

Thanks, I thought it was a setting thing. It seems odd to me that Samsung wants users to use less secure methods than fingerprint scanner to first unlock the phone. Isn't the scanner the most difficult method to hack?
